Scheduling Appointments for IV or K Petitions

To schedule a visa appointment for IV or K petitions, please contact the Embassy?s Visa Information and Appointment Service at (632) 982-5555 or (632) 902-8930.  The Visa Information and Appointment Service is open Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. (Manila time), except on Philippine and U.S. holidays. Callers in the U.S should call (214) 571-1600, from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. (Eastern Standard Time). 

You must have the case number, passport number, and passport expiry date for each applicant (principal applicant and derivative family members) ready when requesting for a visa appointment.

VisaJourney has been a great help in the endeavor of bringing my over from Kiev. She arrived July 17, 2007, and received her 10 year green-card March 25 2008. A week or so ago, we sent her N-400 app to the Phoenix AZ lockbox. We received an email that her paperwork in being entered into the system, and we will receive correspondence in the mail soon.

So far, from this naturalization thread and others, it appears the time from UCSIS's first "WE GOT IT" to final swearing in is about 4 months. Is this so?

Hi RobandTania, Americans only need a passport to travel to the Schengen countries. Same with the Schengen countries. WHen they are coming to the US, no visa needed.

She will need to show her passport and that is it.

You're 100% correct! I called the local satellite office of the Italian Embassy to get ready to get Tania a Schengen visa if she didn't get her U.S. citizenship/passport in time. WHAT A PITA!!

Almost like the original filing for her K-1 visa! We're going to expedite her passport application... She should have it 3-4 weeks before she plans to travel home to Kyiv, then visit Rome, Budapest, Vienna.

I wish we were able to participate more, but we're busier than paper hangers in a wind storm!

We checked about a passport for Tania. It seems to take 4-8 weeks, expedited is $40 more, 2-3 weeks. She's eager to travel to Europe and not thave to go through more paperwork for a Schengen visa. Americans simply get a visa stamp at the point of entry.

Did you contact your local US Representative/Congressman? I asked mine to check on the status of my case (they were able to get information that I could not get when I called customer service), and soon after I received my oath letter.


Could be good advice, my wife and I are getting antsy. She's planning to go to Kyiv the last week of June for a 3-1/2 week vacation. Part of her trip includes stop-overs in Rome, Vienna, and Budapest. Getting a "Uniform Schengen Visa" is a PITA, we need to bring a pile of documents to a member nation's satellite consulate office. This includes non-refundable RT tickets, letter of invitation, health insurance while traveling, proof of U.S. job and assets, so on.

With a U.S. passport, all she needs is to get a stamp on entry to her initial host country. Sigh...

OTOH: She's in class at the local CC with another Russian lady. This woman JUST got her oath appointment letter for about May 10th yesterday. Her Interview was March 3rd, ten days before my wife's interview. Maybe we should just be a little more patient.

Thanks to all for your replies. I guess I should wait a couple more weeks before I get antsy. This is what I thought, but I want to get other VJ'rs input.

To be sure she can meet her friends and family on time in Ukraine this Summer, we should investigate her getting a Shenzhen visa to carry with her. It's a PITA, but she will be able to travel to Italy, France, and Budapest as planned.

Question to December group:

My wife had her interview and was told at the conclusion she passed March 14th. This was two weeks before her 3-year green card residency made her eligible for a decision. At the conclusion of the interview the examiner said she passed, but could not make a decision until last Saturday, the 26th, her 3-year anniversary + 1 day.

Of course we are eager to complete the naturalization process, so we hoped to see an on-line update by now. It is still "Testing and Interview," not "Decision" as we hoped.

My wife wants to travel early this Summer with an American passport, so we don't want to waste time.

Should we call USCIS's customer service at 800-375-5283? Or are we being too eager? If we do call the customer service number, is there a best way to get through the system to talk to a human?

Our Interview Experience at USCIS' Indianapolis Facility:

We arrived at the 950 Meridian Center at 10:15 and parked in front of the building in the building's small lot, $5. There was only one space open, which we found and parked in quickly. When we left, there were several cars waiting to enter as parked cars left. How quickly you can park seems to dependent on when you arrive, plus some luck.

We went through a security screening similar to those at airports with light security. That is, empty pockets and open bags, then get wanded.

The men's and women's toilets are available AFTER going through security. Nothing is available until you have gone to the 4th floor and passed security. If you need to use the facilities, make a stop at a nearby McD's, ... Burger King, wherever. There is no telling how long it will take to park and then go through security.

Tania's interview was scheduled at 10:40 AM, we checked in 15 minutes early at 10:25. We waited until 10:50, i.e., 10 minutes late.

I asked the examiner if I could accompany my wife for moral support and to help with documents. She said "No, we will be only a few moments."

The interview went off without a snag, Tania passed the reading, writing, and six U.S. government questions easily. The reading portion was to read a simple sentence that was written. The writing question was similar, Tania was asked to write down a sentence the examiner spoke to her.

She said the examiner was nice, professional, easy going, and pleasant. Tania came out waiving a signed sheet with a BEEG BEEG smile saying she passed! (I never had a doubt)

We came prepared with an armload of documents, mostly the originals and copies of the originals if we needed to give anything to the examiner. The examiner didn't ask to look at anything.

She took Tania's USSR internal passport, and her Ukrainian international passport as well. She thumbed through them, then handed them back. I guess this is because Tania may need them before she gets a chance to get a U.S. passport. They will probably ask for one or both passports later, maybe at the oath ceremony.

The examiner said she can't make a decision until March 25, because Tania is not "eligible" until then. This we knew because March 25th is her 3rd anniversary after receiving her green card. This is only a formality, of course.

The examiner also said the oath ceremony would take place four to eight weeks from today. I'm guessing Tania will turn in her international passport then, and maybe her internal USSR passport as well.

So, we wait about two weeks until the 25th for a decision, then up to six weeks more for the oath!!

Don't take much notice of the online stuff the uscis has to offer at this time as the RFE is proberly the Bio- F.P which they may or may not have as of today, because you done your F.P the 4th Feb and if you look at other texas timelines from when people do there F.P it can take from 2/4 and sometimes even 6 wks before you get a interveiw day sceduled..

Assuming you sent a complete package at the beginning, I think Nigel is correct your on-line RFE status is just USCIS' internal notice waiting for Bio/FP. My wife received her NOA Bio/FP I-797C in the mail about Jan 10th. A couple days later, her on-line status changed to RFE. Every day I looked in the mail for the RFE letter detailing the problem so I could keep the process moving along. The RFE letter never came. But her on-line status changed to "Testing and Interview" and an NOA I-797C appointment letter came in the mail a few days later.

"Yellow letters?" Interesting. We received only one letter with the I-797C NOA describing appointment time and place with the included generic copy(white copy paper) requesting MANY docs to bring in original with copies.

Question: Our "custom generated" I-797C has a list of documents my wife must bring such as green card, drivers license, passports, proof of sponsoring spouse's citizenship, so on. All good :)

The included "generic" form N-659 "Naturalization Interview Check List " has a long list of documents, all of which we already sent. The requested documents are from our original N-400 filing! These include the above documents PLUS 3 years tax returns, optional two passport size photos, proof of termination of previous marriages, name change information, documents regarding "scuffles wit' de law," if any, docs regarding selective service, record of being outside the U.S. more than 6 months, so on...

They want us to bring them in original and photocopies. Ridiculous, eh?

I had received my interview letter on 04/08 and the interview date is 05/12 which is after tomorrow, any advices or experiences? my local office is norfolk, va and i'm applying through the 3 year rule


Study the 100 questions in your booklet, bring all the documents requested, arrive early but wait outside in the parking lot or lobby until 15-20 check-in time.

Don't worry the USCIS web page of your status has not been updated. My wife had her interview March 14, her oath was last Thursday. She's been a citizen for a week now!

USCIS still says "Testing and Interview" :rofl:


We filed her K-1 in January 2007, she arrived here in the U.S. with K-1 visa in hand the second week of July. Sometime that September USCIS' status said "Interview in Kiev Embassy Scheduled." :rofl:

Thanks for the "goodluck mesage" guys. Interview was easy as expected. Got in there at 7.35 AM, was called in around 8.15, and was out in around 10 minutes. The interview was just the officer reviewing the documents submitted and i was asked 6 of the civil questions which i answered correctly.

Funny thing is that their network was down, and the first thing the interviewer told me was that "If successful today, we won't be able to schedule you for a oath ceremony as our network is down." Well, i got a letter showing that i passed and that he will recommend me for approval to come for an oath within the next 60 days.

I asked the officer what the schedule was llke for oaths and was told they don't have one this month, but that they have for May, June and July. He also said i will probably be in the next batch in May and to bring my PR card to the oath.



Congratulations! Your "Visa Journey" is almost concluded!

BTW: My wife never got ANY feedback regarding pass/fail, upcoming oaths... whatever. At her interview March 14, the officer simply said a decision could not be made until March 26, the three year anniversary of my wife's 10-year green card issuance.

For weeks, we were in the dark about the progress of her naturalization. We wondered if we needed to get her a Shenzhen visa for her to travel to Italy, Bulgaria, and Austria this June. Then last Saturday, she got a plain white letter from USCIS stating her oath is scheduled for 9:00 AM April 28. :dance:

BTW2: Her online status STILL says "Testing and Interview."

I would'nt take much notice of that online stuff at this stage of the game, as ive heard many members who passed interveiw and done oath the oath and still there status says the same as you mention..

what normally happens in a situation like yours is that you passed the test and your file is there until that date passes....once the date has passed your 3yr thing ya talking about, then the uscis will slot you in the next available oath day......that what normally happens...
You can either do what recardo said.....get on the blower....or make a info pass.....which to me sounds better really as you can speak with them face to face and push them for a answer of some sort for when the next oath date would be...im sure you be in soon tho...

PLEASE dont take this humble attitude with you when the FIRST HUMAN gets on the line... go into war mode. to get to THE HUMAN you call the number you have then press 1, press 3, press, 1, then 1... you will get to a human in 1 minute... answer the questions as it applies to you... please update us..

Unfortunately, the service rep said they don't have the details of why her online status is still "Testing and Interview," not "Decision." Se did note the online status is often entered at a different time from the interviews and other steps, but this time they are 100% in agreement. She DID say my wife's application is still under review... or at least has not had a decision entered. This could be simply because of workload at our local office.

Question to January group:

My wife had her interview and was told at the conclusion she passed March 14th. This was two weeks before her 3-year green card residency made her eligible for a decision. At the conclusion of the interview the examiner said she passed, but could not make a decision until last Saturday, the 26th, her 3-year anniversary + 1 day.

Of course we are eager to complete the naturalization process, so we hoped to see an on-line update by now. It is still "Testing and Interview," not "Decision" as we hoped.

My wife wants to travel early this Summer with an American passport, so we don't want to waste time.

Should we call USCIS's customer service at 800-375-5283? Or are we being too eager? If we do call the customer service number, is there a best way to get through the system to talk to a human?

Oh, interesting stats. I'm not worried about the test. He knew most the answers before he even started studying, and now knows them all - so that should be a piece of cake. All documents ready to go! 930 am tomorrow :) woot!


Good luck, although I'm sure "luck" is not needed. A little preparation and planning makes one appear "lucky" to others.

BTW: My little quote about the low passing rate of U.S. citizens and residents was a jab at the poor level of "common knowledge" of Americans, not the difficulty of the test, which is easy.

We dropped the N-400 application in the mail Dec 29. Tania had her interview March 14, she passed easily. She's not eligible for a decision until Saturday the 26th. Her 3-year green card "anniversary" is the 25th.

FWIW: This morning's Indianapolis Star had a small blurb about a Newsweek Magazine survey of 1000 citizens taking the test. 38 percent failed. For example, 30 percent couldn't name the VP. 73 percent didn't know about the cold war. 44 percent couldn't define the Bill of Rights. :(

Congrat to the early bird!! We are coming behind you!! Can you remember the six civic questions that was asked?



Thanks to everyone for the congratulations. The VJ community has been great all along, beginning months before our initial K-1 filing January 2007.

The six questions were(not in this order) 1. your governor? 2. what did the Emancipation Proclamation do? 3. why do some states have more representatives than other states?, 4. give a promise made when becoming a citizen, 5. Father of Our Country?, 6. name a writer of the Federalist Papers.

The reading/writing question was simple, something similar to: "There are 100 U.S. Senators."

Of course, I'm giving this information only for your interest's benefit. They will ask any six questions from the 100 in the USCIS's "Quick Civics Lessons" booklet, and ask any simple question to be read and written.

Study and be prepared, but don't be overly concerned. It's quite easy!

We arrived at the 950 Meridian Center at 10:15 and parked in front of the building in the building's small lot, $5. There was only one space open, which we found and parked in quickly. When we left, there were several cars waiting to enter as parked cars left. How quickly you can park seems to dependent on when you arrive, plus some luck.

We went through a security screening similar to those at airports with light security. That is, empty pockets and open bags, then get wanded.

The men's and women's toilets are available AFTER going through security. Nothing is available until you have gone to the 4th floor and passed security. If you need to use the facilities, make a stop at a nearby McD's, ... Burger King, wherever. There is no telling how long it will take to park and then go through security.

Tania's interview was scheduled at 10:40 AM, we checked in 15 minutes early at 10:25. We waited until 10:50, i.e., 10 minutes late.

I asked the examiner if I could accompany my wife for moral support and to help with documents. She said "No, we will be only a few moments."

The interview went off without a snag, Tania passed the reading, writing, and six U.S. government questions easily. The reading portion was to read a simple sentence that was written. The writing question was similar, Tania was asked to write down a sentence the examiner spoke to her.

She said the examiner was nice, professional, easy going, and pleasant. Tania came out waiving a signed sheet with a BEEG BEEG smile saying she passed! (I never had a doubt)

We came prepared with an armload of documents, mostly the originals and copies of the originals if we needed to give anything to the examiner. The examiner didn't ask to look at anything.

She took Tania's USSR internal passport, and her Ukrainian international passport as well. She thumbed through them, then handed them back. I guess this is because Tania may need them before she gets a chance to get a U.S. passport. The will probably ask for one or both passports later, maybe at the oath ceremony.

The examiner said she can't make a decision until March 25, because Tania is not "eligible" until then. This we knew because March 25th is her 3rd anniversary after receiving her green card. This is only a formality, of course.

The examiner also said the oath ceremony would take place four to eight weeks from today. I'm guessing Tania will turn in her international passport then, and maybe her internal USSR passport as well.

So, we wait about two weeks until the 25th for a decision, then up to six weeks more for the oath!!

We will try to remember, but we're both very busy. Tania's taking four courses at the local CC in addition to working 3 days a week. I'm back in school too, and have many other duties. i have question to your guys: after i sent the whole package back to the same PO box in Dallas, tx, USPS sent me the receipt that it was received by zip code 75222 instead of 75266. today i check the bank account and my check cashed. not so sure that my package loss or uscis have the same PO box in tx for 2 zip code? or my package loss and someone try to steal my money? and how long since you send package to receive NOA?


All normal, don't worry.

I have a possible explanation for two zip codes being reported from your recipients, using my experience with the IRS(Internal Revenue Service) as an example. Last year I sent in my federal tax return by paper, with a tracking delivery confirmation to be registered on line. After two weeks, USPS' tracking system showed it had not been delivered yet. I asked about this at my local Post Office. They said every letter going to that particular zip code(IRS's special zip code to receive returns) really goes into a huge bin to be processed at a later date to an IRS processing center.

Possibly a similar situation with USCIS. The Federal Government in Dallas may have it's own zip code, 75266. This can be in 75222's zip code/PO building.

Question: Our "custom generated" I-797C has a list of documents my wife must bring such as green card, drivers license, passports, proof of sponsoring spouse's citizenship, so on. All good :)

The included "generic" form N-659 "Naturalization Interview Check List " has a long list of documents, all of which we already sent. The requested documents are from our original N-400 filing! These include the above documents PLUS 3 years tax returns, optional two passport size photos, proof of termination of previous marriages, name change information, documents regarding "scuffles wit' de law," if any, docs regarding selective service, record of being outside the U.S. more than 6 months, so on...

They want us to bring them in original and photocopies. Ridiculous, eh?

I don't believe it's required, but it's definitely a good idea to let the Embassy know you're there just in case of emergencies. If you plan on staying over the time allotted by your visa, then you must apply for an extension. When I registered at the American Embassy in Brazil, one thing they asked for was my email address and while I was there, I received informational emails that pertained to our saftely such as Malaria and Yellow Fever outbreaks as well as violence that had erupted in certain cities. So yes, I would suggest that you register with the Embassy.

Wow you are all well-prepared... alright here is my answers to your two questions:
1. Since you are currently legally married to your current husband, his children ARE yours too (even though they are your step-children and you don't have any contact with them). Remember your husband is the legal biological father of his children no matter what. You can just list the names of these children and explain that they are your step children.
2. I would rather wait until Aug 10th, when you are physically back in US land, to send your application. 7 days of difference will not make too much difference in rushing sending your N400 application. Being honest will serve you the best in the long run

I agree with chitown. At first I wasn't sure if you had to list the stepchildren, but I looked at the instructions for the N-400 and it says to list all stepchildren.

Also, it would be best to just wait before sending it in. Chitown is right that a week wouldn't make difference.
