I really miss hockey. sad.gif We don't have satellite or anything and our computer is rather slow so I don't spend much time looking up what's going on. The first and only game I've seen this year was that outdoor game in Buffalo.

Now on Saturday nights I either work or watch Svenghoulie movies. crying.gif

I believe the song you are thinking of is called Rock and Roll Part 2 by Gary Glitter.

I loved to sing to that after my favourite OHL team would score when I was a kid (Oshawa Generals...my friend's dad drove the zamboni so we'd get in for free). But after I learned the name of the song, who sang it, and what he actually looked like? blink.gif Song just wasn't the same afterwards laughing.gif

You are right. That is the song.

Hey, I remember the first OHL game my dad took me to was against the Oshawa Generals. My team is the Windsor Spitfires.

The best after a goal music has to be in Halifax. At least when I was there in 2002. They'd play bagpipes and I'm sure it was my old regimental song from the militia.

well, yeah when I was kid I had to show my Birth certificate because I didn't have a DL yet...

My mom doesn't have a DL and shows a birth certificate and health card. And I'm guessing you never crossed at Detroit because they never accept just a DL by itself.

So basically, you agree that the rule has always been there to show proof of citizenship and photo id?

I crossed the border a lot of times too and they only asked for my DL....

That's odd. It couldn't have been Detroit then eh?

Well, since I was a kid I had to show my birth certificate. And sometimes they even asked to see my student card from school. blink.gif

CanadaHow long could an interview in Montreal take?
I was there early and second in line. I was out by 11 and I caught the Greyhound at 12 or 1...I don't remember.

In the end you don't have to worry. Just get there as soon as you can and catch the next bus. You don't book your ticket by what time you'll catch the bus so don't worry.

OMFG - that's just wrong. Honestly, I bet it'll be just like when CBC wouldn't negotiate a pay raise for Ron McLean - so much outrage that they just did it in the end.

When I first met Chris - he lived on this small small island in Alaska. And when I first arrived, all the locals would sing the HNIC song when I walked through the grocery store. It made it feel like home. Everyone knows that song - its part of being CDN.

Exactly. I told my wife I'd give up my Canadian citizenship if this went down. lol She did not understand what the big deal was about a song so I just said that you had to be Canadian to understand.

Well, I entered the U.S. in June, intending to get married in July. And we did!

It's not illegal in the least. The border guards only care that you're coming back to Canada after you do so. It's prudent to bring proof of ties to Canada, even though I didn't even do THAT at the time.

There's nothing on any subsequent visa documents that state, "did you come into the U.S. intending to get married?" or anything of that sort. They really don't care. Honestly. They just don't want you living there illegally.

There are surely occasional cases where the border guard misinterpreted the fiance's intentions, but so long as you are prepared to prove ties to Canada, you'll be fine 95% of the time.

Edited to add: and if you're going to get married in Canada, wouldn't logic dictate that your foreign fiance would need similar proof of ties to the U.S.?

Congratulations to you two.

It's my understanding that the Canadian immigration process is a lot easier. Is the American going to immigrate to Canada?

Under certain circumstances, Canadians who live outside the country are eligible to vote: Elections Canada

You are correct. I voted in the last election. I think the only way you can't is if you aren't going to move back to Canada within the next five years. They cannot prove that you aren't going to move back so basically, you can vote.

No problem. I have not had a job since coming to the USA (stay-at-home-mom), and my USC husband has been mostly unemployed for a year. They didn't even ask about jobs at the interview.

Thanks so much for responding. What was your interview like? What do they focus on? Since this is the last step of the immigration process, I just want to get it over and be done with it all.

US Citizenship General DiscussionProof of child support

I bit surprised your husband takes this so lightly, but really don't know anything about Brazil, certainly there is a court order requiring him to make those payments. This is giving his ex the privilege of taking him to court for not making those payments. In my case in Wisconsin, they just set up a new government agency where I would send my checks to them and not to my ex. Before, if a spouse did not make those payments, the recipient spouse had to take that ex to court to demand those payments. Now the state would take that ex to court. It was that plus I knew however my ex received those monthly funds, my kids wouldn't see a dime of it. Used that as a strong argument in a court and received full physical custody of my kids. And won.

My wife in Venezuela was awarded child support payments, but her ex was refusing to give his permission for her daughter to leave the country. She countered by forgiving those payments in exchange for his permission to bring her daughter over here. He was already six years in arrears, so either had to come up with a small fortuned or go to jail. Just seems to me your husbands ex is in the same position, can claim donations from the grandmother, but your husband doesn't have any proof he is sending those payments. Would consider that more hazardous than dealing with the USCIS.

Really no qualified attorney on this matter, but seems like you need a letter of affidavit from the ex that those payments have been received on behalf of your husbands mother for child support payments. But suggest you see an attorney on this matter.

Thanks for your response. I discovered that his mother has every receipt of every payment made and the receipts are in my husband's name so seems everything will be fine regarding documentation.

US Citizenship General DiscussionProof of child support
After reading through the list of documents to send with the application, the one thing that might be an issue for my husband is the proof of child support. His mother pays and has always paid it. She has every receipt, but will that be an issue that my husband isn't actually paying? The child still lives in Brazil.

US Citizenship General DiscussionHave not updated new addresses with USCIS

As the non-USC, it is your husband's responsibility to file the AR-11. It's not for you to do it for him.

He should certainly tell them of his current address, using an AR-11. But he might want to advise USCIS of previous addresses in a letter. Filling out numerous, separate AR-11s now, for all the previous addresses could just cause confusion.

Thanks for the reply. I know it's his responsibility, but he has no idea he's suppose to do this as I've been doing it since he arrived. I will update his current address.

My husband has moved several times, but I have not updated those addresses with USCIS. We are no longer together, but not divorced. He will go for citizenship on his own after 5 years. Should I submit all of the past addresses to USCIS or is it sufficient to just submit his current address?

CanadaLose Canadian Health Care?

Hi,

Provinces differ, for instance if it is with Alberta a person can buy coverage for 3 months. However, keep in mind that regardless of what the rules are for her province, if the child actually had to go to the hospital in the U.S., what they charge and what would be paid for by health care in Canada are probably miles apart. You should consider buying U.S. Health insurance for that month.

I'm going to move your thread from K1 procedures to the Canada forum, as that is Canada specific and you will get more response, it's also helpful if you can tell us which province they are from.

Yes, she is from Alberta. What is the link to the Canada forum? I am sure there are a lot of things on that forum that we need to know also. I have only come across the US portals.
Never mind - I found it!!
Thanks!

CanadaLose Canadian Health Care?
When the Visa is finally approved - (hopefully soon), how soon after my fiance and her children come to the US will she lose her Canadian Health Care? We are planning on being married as soon as she arrives here in the US. I know that I can put her and the children on my health care plan at work, but only after 30 days. She has a child who has brittle bone disease so many things could happen in the first 30 days that may require a hospital stay.
How soon after arriving can they apply for a Social Security Card?
The journey is long - but so worth it!

US Citizenship General DiscussionTaking the Oath
The way I see it is according to the US government, I am renouncing my former country. However, my country does not obligate me to give up citizenship when I get citizenship in another country. Therefore, no matter what the US government may think, I will still always be a Canadian citizen as well. It's no different than when I pledged allegiance to the Queen when I was in the military. It's just words. The Queen is no more important than I am.

In conclusion, take the oath and become a US citizen while at the same time keeping your former citizenship.

US Citizenship General DiscussionWhat did you use to study for the test?
You might not even have to study. If you just talk to people, read books, watch old movies or historical documentaries, etc. then you will just learn by osmosis. By the time you are ready to apply for citizenship you may already know all if not most, of the answers just from living here for a few years.

Maybe your wife could give up her other citizenship. I don't know. Really, how hard is it to hold onto three passports?

US Citizenship General DiscussionOmitting Place of Birth on a US Passport....
Huge amount of responses...

I suppose it is necessary to add country of birth because we were NOT born in the United States. This would prevent people like myself from being able to run for President. What's the big deal?

US Citizenship General Discussionleaving the country
Hi. I was wondering if we are allowed to leave the country after sending in our application for citizenship? I'm wondering about this because you have to list the times when you were outside of the U.S. on your application. Are we allowed to leave?
