Just another tip for anyone who may have b/fast at the Bistro by LaTour Centreville...you'll need to ask for more than one orange juice. The containers are smaller than child size. lol I felt like I was drinking from a spoon.

Thanks Lance. I appreciate that.

CanadaAnother interview story
My interview was in Montreal on June 20th. I took the bus all day from Windsor up to Montreal on the 19th, 'toured' downtown in the evening, then returned to the hotel to pass out while watching a baseball game.

I stayed at the La Tour Centreville hotel that many people mention. It is a fairly decent place to stay with quick access to the Consulate. I asked for a wake up call at 6am but it came at 6:15. I didn't mind since I was awake at 5:45. To find the Consulate, you just walk out the door, turn left, walk to the corner, and cross Rene Levesque. It is the big marble building on the corner.

I got there just after 7am and I was second in line to get in but for some reason I was first to get called to hand in my documents and first to get my interview. I also had walked to the back of the elevator. The document collector guy was friendly. I didn't realize I was supposed to keep that paper clipped to the outside of the medical. I thought it was just instructions to not open the envelope. He said I should have kept it on but it was no big deal. When I went to pay the cashier she stapled my receipt to the Consulate's receipt. I just kept it attached because I didn't want to take it off if I wasn't supposed to take that off too.

After a half hour or 45 minute wait I was called in for my interview. The guy was sitting behind a bullet proof window I presume. He was very friendly and asked me things like where I met my fiancee, what she does, what my co-sponsor does. He asked what I would do when I got there and how I proposed to her. Then he said I was approved and congratulated me. He then gave me an information sheet on moving to the states and a tax info sheet. He then said "enjoy Indiana" and I was on my way. I left the Consulate and then went to have b/fast at the little bistro beside the hotel. It was a piece of cake and I enjoyed the trip.

CanadaE-mail to the Montréal Consulate...

Hey.. being annoyed and frusterated with MTL and this whole process is understandable. We all know how you feel so no apologies necessary.
Since he sent back packet3 in Feb its looking like he should have the interview in July. So you guys are almost there :)

Good luck

Good luck with the expedite request. I'm pretty sure they prioritize scheduling by when the checklist is returned, not the packet 3 date (why would they schedule you when you're not ready before other people who have returned everything?), so you might be out of luck since the delay in returning the checklist was on Réjean's end.

The medical issue might help, though, if they have a cancellation or something.

The fee increase sucks. Due to all of our wedding shenanigans, we'll probably be able to file August 4th or 5th but not by the end of July (wedding on the 20th, time to submit forms to the county, time to get the forms mailed to Connecticut, time to get the paperwork sent off puts us at around two weeks after the wedding, earliest.)

We had all the paperwork done in December, so we were already ready. Now that it's June, we may have to redo all of it. And Réjean sending back the checklist a month later was only part of it. He never even got Packet 3 until 2 months later, and that's only because he went to the Consulate and picked it up!

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I'm sorry if my replies are on the bitchy side. I can't even come to this site anymore because it upsets me too much.

Wonder why I didn't get the benefit of the doubt like that. Hmm...odd, that.

Anyways...if it's tough now how will it be when he gets to the states? He'll still have to pay that 200 bucks a month won't he? Does he expect you to support him?

PS leave it to Greyhound to screw things up for you. Sorry they did that.

CanadaI want to go back

I'd like to move back eventually someday. As nice as it is in the US, it doesn't compare to Canada, especially with the economy the way it is now. It always struck me as a little funny that we have to get together all this evidence to prove that our relationship isn't a sham, and that I'm not using the system to get into the States... it's like, I'm from Canada, why would I even WANT to move down here if not for my wife?

First, I want to thank everyone who did reply. I didn't know I had it in the wrong forum, sorry. I know I mentioned Canada but I figured my post would apply to anyone who wanted to go back to their home country.

That said, I completely agree with the post that I quoted. If it weren't for my fiancee, I would never have even WANTED to move down here so I am hardly using her to get into the country. lol I think USCIS takes themselves a tad too seriously. :)

I had considered staying here until after getting US citizenship but I think I heard that Americans still get taxed even when they live abroad.

CanadaAdvance Parole RIDICULOUS for USC/Canadians

I don't think AP is any more ridiculous than the rest of the process for Canadians. The number of times my mom thought I was making up this whole process because "can't he just drive down here whenever and you can get married".... But it's a different country, even though it's one that has eased tourist restrictions.

I wouldn't sign a petition, and I wouldn't think your odds are great on easing anything remotely related to border security.

It has nothing to do with border security. If it had anything to do with border security they wouldn't let you immigrate in the first place or they wouldn't give advance parole in the first place. It's about money; not border security.
JoeCanukMaleCanada2007-06-12 16:35:00
CanadaAdvance Parole RIDICULOUS for USC/Canadians

To the USC/Canadian couples: do you find it utterly ridiculous that we are required to file for the AP document? As a Canadian citizen you automatically have a visitor's visa to the US....UNTIL you activate your K1, now you have to ask for permission to return (Advance Parole)??

That makes NO SENSE to us, and Doug, who is always indignant about injustice, wants to know HOW TO CHANGE THE REQUIREMENT....I know....but I have to love his enthusiasm, and honour his request to ask....does anyone understand WHY or WHO to lobby against? He wants to start a petition for change, bless his heart.....

I guess he could start by emailing his senator or congressperson. Canada *IS* another country, regardless of its position geographically north of the United States. Travel to and from Canada is much like any other travel. By air a passport is already required and by 2008 a passport will be required for land and sea travel. I guess it's like this: once you activate the K1 its with the assumption that you are intending to immigrate and someday become a citizen. Therefore the USCIS expects you to follow the regulations they have for travel outside the States while you are adjusting your status to permanent residence. See where I'm going with this? Hope it made some sense. :)

I guess they figure, too bad that you still have family in the country you are from. Who cares about them eh?

Yeah.... I just don't get the States that take your out-of-country license. They have no authority to confiscate an official document issued by another country. That's along the same vein as taking your Canadian passport when you become a US citizen.

Your DL isn't issued by a country...it's issued by the state/province. Comparing it to a passport doesn't work.

You can't go around with two DLs...you need to be accountable in the state/province in which you live.

Back on topic, I went to a DPS in TX yesterday. I was told I wouldn't have to take the tests and could just transfer my Alberta DL.

Last time I checked, Ontario was in Canada.

Alot of us don't really don't want to have to retake the tests and don't mind surrendering our Canadian (or in my case when I moved to Canada my US) license. it's not a matter of being screwed it's just whether the bother of retesting is worth keeping the license

I see what you're saying but I still believe some people have been screwed. A Canadian drivers licence is just that...a CANADIAN drivers licence. Neither country should have the authority to make you surrender it. Personally if they did, I would still do the road test because my Canadian licence is...mine. They have no business taking it.

You make me laught Joe. The drivers examination centre said I had to "surrender" my Canadian license as well. While she was filling out the forms, to give me my MO license, I pinched the corner of my Cdn. license the corner and slowly started to slide it towards me. She didn't seem to notice the movement, and I dumped it over the edge into my purse. After she finished doing what she was doing, she gathered up all the papers on her desk, and handed them to me, I think forgetting the license. hehe

I can't believe all these states and provinces took away drivers licences from your native countries. They really have no right to do that. Everybody gets an I-94 at the border if they're entering the US with a visa. What he didn't get was the temp EAD stamp, which are very hard to come by these days.

Technically a K1 is authorized to work for the validity of the I-94 (90 days) but just try getting a job if you're only eligible to work that little bit of time. Plus it takes a few weeks to get your SSN, so anyone coming to the US on a K1 should just plan to be bored and unemployable until they get their EAD.

It is against the law for an employer to NOT hire you because of a future expiration date of a work permit. I found a job with a month left on my I-94 and worked. After it expired, I was extremely bored.

If you check the website for your provincial healthcare office, there will be information there about what you are supposed to do should you leave the province/country. On the OHIP website (I'm originally from Ontario) they state you are to send them a letter to notify them that you are no longer an Ontario resident as of your date of departure.

Ok, no problem. Please accept my apology.

I can see one points about if ur claiming EI and paying taxes on it. But if ur no longer paying taxes to Canada, why should one benefit by a service that is tax payer driven? Just my 2 cents, and its not even worth that! lol

No you can leave ur RRSP's in Canada, you just have to inform ur rep that looks after them that ur no longer a resident of Canada. TD sent me a few forms to fill out. Once ur no longer a resident of Canada, you can't make any changes to the RRSP accounts, just have to leave them alonf (of course u can withdraw them) at least thats what the TD guy told me!

There is also a place on the Cnadian govt website where u can change ur address. You have to sign up for a EPASS:
https://blrscr3.egs-...owserCheck.html think it asks for a certain amount that was on a certain line # of ur last tax return!!

cheers

Yeah but I am in the process of having my E.I. claim reactivated as I now have my EAD and haven't found a full time job. Besides that, if I have to pay taxes for last year to Canada then I am paying taxes to Canada and thus should be entitled to OHIP. Not that OHIP is particularly useful anymore compared to when I was younger.

I'm glad I closed my RRSP a couple years ago. I think it's a scam. sad.gif

To continue to use Canadian healthcare services after you have taken up permanent residence in another country is illegal. Yes, people do it, but that doesn't make it right. If you are found out to have used Canadian healthcare services after you have moved out of the country, they can charge you for those benefits received, plus a fine.

The system is already stretched thin as it is, having people use it who are not longer eligible just makes it worse. It is not your citizenship that determines eligibility, but residency. Legally, you are supposed to notify your provincial health office that you are leaving the province and taking up residence elsewhere.

Could you show me where I said I am using it? All I said was I disagree with it all.

Nobody told me I had to notify my provincial health office that I was leaving the province. Why is that? Never saw it mentioned on here whatsoever.

There is a leaving canad form, BUT you are NOT required to fill it out. Sure u can if u wish and I believe it was VJ member Cassie that stated her accountant it HAS to be filled out!! I called Revenue Canada few yrs back, and they said it didnt have to be filled out!! Ur not wrong in filling it out, but why waste more time with paperwork if you do not have to!!

So how will they know u left canada?? When u file ur Cdn taxes for the year that u left, right onthe front page of the tax forms, it asks when u became or CEASED to be a Cdn resident! Plop in the date u left Canada and ur golden! Thats all I did. if they want more info, they wil contact ya!!

RRSP's You have to let ur financial instituition know when u become a non resident of canada. They wil send u paperwork to fill out. Its fine to leave them in Canada, no big deal! BUT you wil have to report those RRSP to the IRS! Using form 8891. With regards to the IRS, ur just notifying them that u have the RRSP's and the IRS doesnt charge ya any taxes on them--that is if you just leave them, but if you take them out, thats another storey. AND each state looks at the RRSP's different! Some wont charge any tax on them if you leave them in Canada, but from my understanding some States will charge ya $$$$,so one has to know your State rules!! And u have to declare ur RRSP's on form 8891 to the IRS every year.

And if yo u take the RRSP's out, Revenue Canada automatically deducts 25% off!!

Not sure exactly when ur OHIP ceases, but when ur a non resident of Canada, ur not entitled to use the healthcare! Ya, u can use it, but u will be paying for it!! makes sense, ur no longer paying taxes in Canada, so why should u be able to get the discounted fees!! Ur USA private healthcare hopefully covers you when abroad.

After I moved here I called the Canadian government to report that I no longer lived in Canada. Gave them my U.S. address and you know what they did? Sent my tax forms to old address in Canada anyways. lol

As for RRSPs I thought you HAD to be living in Canada to have them. I thought if you emigrated, that you had to cash them out.

As for OHIP, you're right. We can't use it. But I disagree with it. I was collecting E.I. over here and paying taxes on it, thus I was technically paying taxes in Canada. I am still a Canadian citizen and thus I should be allowed to still benefit from OHIP. But the Canadian government, in it's 'wisdom' has determined that I cannot. Nobody ever accused the Canadian government of being wise though.

I hope there is someone who can help me. My package 3 arrived in canada. Can I get my sister to mail it down to me in the u.s. and I can fax it to Montreal? Do I need to send the police report and all my other documents like the I-134 (ready to go). So, what exactly do I send back (fax? Mail? or email?) after I get my package 3. Thanks.

I don't understand why you're down in the U.S. in the first place? huh.gif

CanadaAnyone know the name and title of the song they always play at Hockey Games?
Nope. No camera. I'll have to get off of dial up as soon as possible. Like, for the playoffs. lol

But at least I can get all the scores in one shot. Thanks.

if ur computer was faster ya could watch a few games a week for FREE on yahoo, and yes they are live games!!

http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/scoreboard if ya see a little camera near the right bottom, it means you can watch it live! Ya just need a yahoo acct-which is free. Give it a try, ur computer may be fast enough
