Hi Everyone,

It's been few months since the last time I posted on this board. Glad to see that I am not the only one getting crazy and happy all at the same time driving in America.

Like everyone else, it was scary at first. I have to get used to the wide road and no bumper to bumper unlike in the Philippines. Hubby said I was a natural driver....hehehe...and I never thought I would be driving in America for I never drove in the Philippines. Driving in the interstate was a challenge especially that one day my hubby just instructed me to go right into the interstate without warning. Gosh! My heart was racing so fast! But I made it through.

The only difficult thing for me is that I am small and have to push the driver's seat forward to the extent that it is difficult to see the side mirrors....hahaha...especially the left side mirror and when I changed lanes, it is a blind spot. Hubby is so patient and days from now I will have my actual driving test.

Good luck to everyone and happy driving!

We are talking to Mir's mother on the phone now and everything seems okay. The interview is complete. According to Mir's mother....the Consul told her the "petition" is approved. I said, "Petition?" She said, "Yes...the petition is approved." Mir told her the petition was approved long ago, but we hope the Visa is now approved." She replied again, "Yes...the petition is approved." laughing.gif

She was given a slip and told to go pay Delbros, so I guess that's a good sign. good.gif kicking.gif good.gif kicking.gif good.gif She did not ask if the document verification was complete, so we are not sure if the visa will come right away or be delayed like others have been for the document verification. We're just happy to know she is approved and will get her visa.

Thanks again for the well wishes.

Three trips to PH from DFW.
1) Company paid Business Class via NWA. Hey, if it's Business Class, it ain't bad!
2) Friend's sister is travel agent specializing in Korean flights, got me a good deal on DFW to MNL via Korean air. Best part of the trip, one stop from DFW... Inchon.
3) BT-STORE.COM didn't tell me the airline, but gave the good deal price. I knew by the flight schedule it was NWA from DFW to MNL. I don't care if it gets me to my baby. Worse AND best part of flight.... Leaving Japan NRT, got upgraded to Business Class.... took off in the face of a typhoon... Ever see a 747 bounce around like a Cessna 152?

I'll definitely try BT-STORE.COM again.

I've booked my last 2 trips through www.justfares.com both trips they beat B-Tstore by 200 bucks let alone their service is excellent compared to any of the travel websites. Just call the number and speak to your own live agent, most that work there are Pinoy. My agent is Emy he is amazing and has bent over backwards to accomodate my requests.
For my upcoming trip in February about 2 weeks after I booked Northwest canceled my connecting flight from Chicago to Minneapolis, I get a phone call from Emy explaining that it was canceled and worked on an alternative flight and called me back more than once. I just can't say enough good things about these guys.

Arghhhh... I hate seeing something like this and can't do anything about it..

I just get my tickets now straight to manila. then go to cebupacificair.com and buy a ticket from Manila to Cebu theres like 8 flights a day it's like a one hour flight and if you purchase early you can get the go fares which sometimes are as low as 20 bucks with fees. flights booked directly to Cebu from the US are always way overpiced compared to just flying to Manila and then taking Cebu Pacific.

Domestic flights on Cebupacific are so dirt cheap if you book early and get the go fares especially.

Hello All,

Are there any airlines that you know of that have non-stop flights from Manila to anywhere on the East Coast? Or even one stop in China, Korea, etc and then onward to the East Coast?

Also, say you are flying to Dulles, Washngton DC, but a flight flies from Manila to Las Angeles and then another flight to Dulles? Can you wait to clear immigration/customs until your final destination versus Las Angeles in this example?

I didn't even see a non-stop flight into Las Vegas and I know I have read some Vjers who cleared immigrations in Las Vegas...

Thanks[/quote]

These are the nonstop or (kind of) non stops that I know of.

Phillipines Airlines Daily
LA to Manila (makes fuel stop in Guam on the west bound flight) no fuel stop on return flight(Because of prevailing jet stream over the Pacific)
SF to Manila (same fuel stop in Guam)
Las Vegas to Manila - Stops in Vancouver but you do not leave plane but some boarding.

Northwest Airlines daily
Minneapolis to Manila -- Fuel stop in tokyo
Detroit to manila --- Fuel stop in Tokyo

You have to veify that, it sounds fishy to me. As far as i knew Couriers like UPS and Fedex didn't charged anything to the recepient. I used to receive packages from then Fiance through FedEx when i was in the Philippines and i havn't paid a single cent. Let your fiancee go to the nearest UPS branch and claim it personally, its possible that its just a delivery guys scam, if its real why he gave his cellphone number, why not the UPS official number.

I did finally get a hold Of UPS customer service their in PI and verified the charge was legit. But they could not in any way explain why I was charged so much. They just blamed it on PI Customs.

QUOTE (sweet_peach @ Dec 21 2007, 03:35 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I deal with international freight everyday. Looks like customs is having a good time with you. Unfortunately when you declared a value on the air way bill customs can basically do what ever they like. UPS should have told you not to declare a value on the air way bill and just insure it through them. Now that its over t here you will have to pay the customs fee or customs will confiscate the package.

sorry

When shipping via UPS they will not let you insure the item for more than the declared value. So basically I was stuck with either no insurance or declaring the 500 value. I thought they may hit me up for a duty but had no idea it would be like 30%. In hindsight I guess I should of just rolled the dice and not insured it.

Did you insure this item or set a declared value on this package? I think that must be key to what the charge.
I am still dumbfound that 30% could really be the rate considering their VAT is only 12%. It seems to me the Philippine government is a big fan of tax the poor by thier tax and tariff policies.

PhilippinesShipped jewelry Tarriff or Duty.. ridiculous rate ?
I sent my Fiancee her christmas present via UPS a few days ago.
Basically a Card, some candy and a 14k Gold necklace. The necklace is
18 grams 14k gold mall Store retail maybe worth $800 I paid less than
half of that. When I shipped the necklace , just to be safe I decided
to insure the package for $500.

I get a message from my Fiancee at 3:30AM this morning telling me she
just got a call from a man saying he's with UPS Cebu and that when
they come to deliver the package they will need her to pay PP6100
($150US) for a tariff or duty. the man on the phone gave her a cell
phone number to call to let him know if they can deliver it tommorow.

Well I called the number he did not answer his phone, I began to
suspect maybe this was just a shakedown from the driver. I finally
did get a hold of UPS operator in PI and it comes to find out it is
legit.

My gripe is I asked when I sent the item from my local UPS office if
there would be a duty for this item and the said not for that low of
value for personal use.

Has anyone else here had this similar experience, is this even real?

Anyone maybe have a link to customs and duties webpage describing
said rules and fees for PI?

Does anyone else find this rate ,Basically 30% tariff rate ridiculous
especially just for personal use?

I guess I'm just going to have her pay it, as it seems we have no
choice really unless someone here has another suggestion.

PhilippinesWhich visa should we use?
""5) What are the latest average timelines for these visas? Is 5 months max reasonable when filed say, on March or April?

Depends: K-1 may vary from 4-6 months. K-3 from 6-8 months and CR-1/IR-1 from 8 months to a year or more granting there will be no problems when you file the petition. ""

Most of the information given by vsmtghdy is good other than timelines for K-1 and K-3 are pretty similar these days. 4-6 months is not even close to realistic these days for K1. right now your looking at 8 to 11 months for either K1 or K3 especially if you have the misfortune of having CSC as your service center.

You may also want to read about the time and requirements to get married in the Philippines. There are many posts on this just use search feature. Many opt to go the K-1 route and get married here in the states and just have a ceremonial wedding in the Philippines for the family. After all my research that is what me and my Fiancee ended up deciding was the best option for us.

The other Advantage of the K-1 route in your situation is he could fill out the paperwork now and get it sent in now rather than wait until march or April and you have a couple months jump on the time wait.

PhilippinesWhat did you do with all your stuff ?
Me and Joy are trying to figure out a plan of what to do with all her personal posessions before she comes here. Now this has become a bit of a touchy subject as she is very attached to her stuff and a bit of what I would call a packrat. My more practical approach (just sell the stuff) didn't go over so well and promptly got myself a nice big serving of Tampo wacko.gif

Joy lives in Cebu City and her family is in GenSan she has already packed several Balikabayan size boxes of clothes and such. What carrier might we use to get the stuff to Gensan that is dependable and reasonably priced? It don't have to be fast just trustworthy.

Also what if she wanted to send boxes of personal stuff here to the states what is the best way to do that and what sort of cost?

I already brought 1 bag of clothes with me on my last trip there. I know she will be able to bring 2 luggage and a carryon. But I'm not for sure that will be enough for her.

Any other advice here would be helpful as my ideas have not went over so well.

Thanks
Hoosier.

PhilippinesBad experience in Philippine Bureau of Customs to pick up a package
QUOTE (jasman0717 @ Feb 29 2008, 11:23 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Sorry to hear of your experience. We found a Filipino grocery store close to us that also ships our balikbayan boxes. We recently sent a box and it cost us $65. There were no customs issues and the box was delivered right to my wife's parent's front door.

I posted here a similar experience when I sent my Fiancee her christmas present jewelry and various small items through UPS. I insured the package for $500 so that automatically gave it a declared value of $500. There must be filipino Customs office in Hong Kong as they called my Fiancee and said to deliver her package she will have to pay 6100 php (150US). My fiancee called me at 3am crying, I immediately call UPS and raised hell. They basically said too bad, it's customs decision what they charge.

I searched the internet high and low there is no documentation anywhere saying officially what the tarrifs should be for items. Basically I think they just arbitrarily come up with a figure they think people will pay.

Now the funny part is when the driver got there to deliver the package he forgot to charge her the 6100 php she even asked about it and he even called his office on the spot. 3 days later she gets a call and they said there was a mess up in the paperwork and that she owes them 6100 php. Well needless to say she told them where they could stick it.

After many replies and discussion with friends about this the best way to send items to PI is 1 of these options.

1) very rarely do Balikbayan boxes get charged these tariffs and they are reasonable price. Downside is it takes like 2 months for the package to get to your loved one.

2) If you need faster service use a trusted carrier like UPS, FEDEX or DHL. Do not insure or put any declared value. downside is it is very expensive to send via 1 of these carriers. ** note never use postal service for anything other than documents as anything valuable will likely Disappear.**

Customs is likely the most corrupt department in the Philippine government. There are countless newstories regarding their practices. Government corruption and the populaces acceptance of it, is likely the biggest single reason that there is and has been so little foreign investment in the Philippines. Since WW2 when countries in a similar position at the time like Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand have flourished and have very high standards of living.

PhilippinesPhilippine Passport
I have a question. Has anyone got your passport in PI recently? Rumor has it you can no longer use an agency to get a passport quickly, since they are now using the new electronic passports? How long did it take to get your passport?

I think my fiancee may need to renew her passport which expires Nov 08 and I hear that it is less than 6 months before it expires you can't get the visa.

She told me last time she got her passport in 3 days using an agency, but a friend told her now it take a minimum of 1 month because they are behind because of these new electronic passports. Plus she thinks they won't put any priority on it because it is like 8 months before it expires.

If it takes a month or longer that is going to really make it tight for her to get her medical ahead. Just trying to get the right info here. Thanks

They are going to issue her passport that quickly?

I heard rumor that it was taking minimum one month now to get the passport because there is backlog because of the new type of passports with the electronic chip in them.

Joy's passport expires the end of November. But were afraid to send it off for renewal and it takes too long then it will delay her doing medical and getting the interview.

PhilippinesAmerican Idol (filipina)
Well going 1st is always a very bad position to be on AI unless your performance is top notch. Unfortunately I think Ramielle was about 1 of the 3 weakest performances tonight. Jason Castro was likely worse, but he is very popular it seems.

David Archuletta picked a horrible song but he will get a pass because he is such a fan favorite. I put in my share of votes for the home team But she needs to show more soon! She has yet to put in even 1 of the top 5 performances in any week.

I think Ramielle will squeak through this week just because of the Filipino factor, Ya'll are loyal to the bone for your girl. But she needs to really start stepping it up soon or there won't be enough Filipinas with 3 phones to save her whistling.gif

And Holy WOW, that David Cook has it going on, that version of Billy Jean was insane.

Man!! I am really jealous.. sad.gif been bugging NVC but the automated voice in the phone says we dont have any records from their system. I am dieing to know whats our MNL case number!!!!

Call NVC @ (603) 334-0700, press 1, then 5. Be ready with beneficiary's full name, date of birth and your NOA1 or 2 receipt number. You cannot use the automated system to check K-1 Visas as they do not load these into the automated system. You must speak with a live person.

You're almost there. yes.gif Best of luck to you. God speed. rose.gif

Ohhh thank you so much, its not me that calls NVC but my fiance, everytime i tell him to call that # he always get the same answer NO RECORD ON FILE from an automated voice machine. I will tell my fiance to do that, thank you so much.

Godbless you too.

Let Him know call either before 9:00 am or after 10:00 pm to get through to a person. Most other times of day it is difficult to get through.

PhilippinesUS Embassy warns of possible kidnappings
I would take my chances anywhere in Mindanao or the Philippines alone on a dark street before I would in some of the inner city areas I've been to in Chicago, Detroit or Gary Indiana even.
