Did it really only take you a month to get a SSN?

We got married on July 7th, applied for my hubby's SSN on July 15th, his SSN card arrived in the mail on July 22nd. I don't know if this is typical but I hope the info helps!

Good luck to you!!

day 4 of no appointments available.....big sigh....

I'm pretty sure NVC will be scheduling you appointment... you are CR-1/IR-1 right??? ...if so.. it's possible you can't judge the interview schedule by the CSC site... maybe there are times set aside for NVC scheduled appointments.
Hang in there!!Posted Image

S and P: i tried to call DHL but they told me they couldnt check it unless i ahve the waybill number.

I would still try and go to the branch in person..... my fiance went to the branch he registered with.... just to check earlier this week..... he said they didn't ask for a waybill number, just his name... and they went and opened up this locked cabinet and searched through it.....

I don't know how different things vary from DHL branch to branch... but it couldn't hurt....

yes i called DOS and they couldny see any waybill number. June 6,2011 i recieved an email from the consulate stating that my visa was already sent late last week and iu have to check DHL.The problem is there is no waybill number. I called DOS today but i got the same answer "no waybill number".
What number are r calling?

have you tried going to the DHL office in person and have them check?? I think if you give DHL your name they can look for it right there at the branch without a waybill number.

Have you tried checking DHL with your reference number from the CSC site??

After what I just went through , planning my wedding 2 and a half weeks after my interview, I would suggest you plan the wedding a little later than 2 weeks after the interview.
I would have had mine a little sooner had they not made a mistake and delivered to the wrong DHL location ( 8 hours away from me ) . If I wanted to make my wedding I had to drive to Dorval to pick it up myself or email the Consulate and wait for a response as to why they delivered my package there.....hmmm...... I chose to go get it myself.
For those of you who have been following............. I made it to my wedding , literally arriving in town an hour and a half before the wedding, after driving 24 hours to get the visa, cross the border and get to my new home town. PHEW!

Still in a bit of a daze BUT HAPPY! :)

Canadak1-ers waiting for Montreal

Wow , yes odd things happening in Montreal! My mom said it seems like there are two parallel universes operating there. HA!

Yes, I called DOS several times and all I got was that there was no change in status on my file. Basically that I would just have to wait.
I also called the contact number for the Consulate and each time they told me that they have the same information as we can see on the account on the website. When I asked if there was someone to talk to who knew more information about where it may be at that point, I was told a resounding "no" and "have a good day" and " good luck". hmmmm

I wish there was someone who could organize a tracking system from the Consulate - it would save us the worry and frustration of not knowing anything, timeframes, etc etc . We humans feel much better when we have answers or a place to seek answers and actually get some. OR ( I think this is the answer ) someone to set up , printing and getting the visa to you on the day of your interview. We are there anyway and I am sure none of us would mind waiting another few hours to have in hand. ( even the next day - I would have stayed and waited )

I have been on the phone to DHL as well, now that I have a waybill number and I finally got someone who thought it important enough to see what happened and how to get it to the right branch. The first phone call I made there, the lady told me I had to go to Dorval and pick it up. ( I live in Ontario 8-9 hours away from Dorval )
There was no other way to get it, besides paying them to get it to me. A lot of miscommunication and misinformation out there. I was ready to drive back to quebec to get it and/or pay whatever to have it. They have said it will be at my branch tomorrow BUT I am waiting til I have it in hand..........then you will hear me scream from wherever you are. :)

SF2007, have you called anyone? DOS? Consulate? I am sure you have..............My fiance's mom contacted the local US Senator yesterday ( Unbeknownst to me until after the fact ) - I am not sure if that made any difference but anything is worth a try. I will send out positive vibes everywhere for all waiting. This is the hardest part. So close............

Where did you get the waybill number?? did it finally appear on the CSC website??

sending safe travel positive thoughts for your visa to arrive tomorrow!! Posted Image

Canadak1-ers waiting for Montreal

I just had to share this with everyone............ I just received today in the mail my PKT3. It was dated May20, 2011 and sent May 27, 2011. I received my Pkt 4 on April 15th, 2011 but more interesting is that the fact that I had my interview on May 18th. Hmmmmmmm
Thought I'd share.
OH and found out today that they delivered my Visa to Dorval Quebec DHL location waiting for me to pick up there. I had registered for a city 8 hours away from there. Anyway, I think they have resolved the issue but my nerves are a bit shot.

You guys are my link to sanity throughout this process. Thank you. Posted Image

CanadaUS Passport Photos and how many?
just FYI you will also need 6 more passport photos to send along with your AOS paperwork when the time comes, so you might want to find out if it's cheaper to get extras printed now or just have another sent taken later.... just a thought Posted Image

Canadawhat to file after you get your visa?
Yes YES YES!! read the guides here!! Posted Image
Speaking as someone who is going through the AOS process right now, I found them to be incredibly helpful when trying to wade through this crazy paperwork!! So... take a deep breath.....and click on the little thing at the top of your screen that says Guides , and also the Example Forms section....and then if you have any questions there are many many friendly helpful people here who will try and give you the right answer! (check out the AOS forums as well)

Yes you get a I-94 at POE .
You might really want to consider not wasting money on a lawyer and file your AOS yourself....the guides here a wonderful and it's seriously not difficult! We were so intimidated during our K-1 petition that we used a lawyer and we so regret wasting the money!!

CanadaCanadian Thanksgiving
A big turkey dinner is my favourite meal to make (and my husbands to eat! Posted Image)!! We will be going up to Michigan to spend the US thanksgiving with my family and I don't get to cook, so I'm really happy to be able to celebrate Canadian thanksgiving this year and do lots of cooking, I think I'm going to have to invite some friends to help eat all the food Posted Image!! I hope I can find a fresh turkey this early around here...they taste so much better than the frozen.

CanadaWanna use Rental Car for POE - Pickup in Toronto and drop off in the US.
Have you tries Alamo car rental? I know they do major airport to major airport rentals even from Canada. My hubby rented from them in Ottawa and dropped off in Detroit and it was $200.00. You may want to compare prices.

CanadaTo those of you finally home (US side)!
you can get a SSN before you get married, but you do have to wait at least 10 business days after your POE to apply for a SSN , it takes a little bit of time to get your info updated in their system. You will just have to go back to the Social Security Office after you get married if you change your name.

very good!! will do that on Monday!!

You have to wait at least 10 business days (after your POE) before you will even show up in the computer system...

CanadaDo I need a S.S. N. to submit the AOS papers??
Just to add.... you will NEED a SSN for things like getting a drivers license and working.....so I wouldn't wait too long to apply if you want to do either of those things before you get your Green Card.
S and PFemaleCanada2011-11-11 11:14:00
CanadaDo I need a S.S. N. to submit the AOS papers??
Wow you are ambitious!! Posted Image
You can file for AOS/EAD/AP without a social security number.
If you apply for a SSN before you file, ( you will need to wait at least 10 business days after your POE for your information to show up in the Social Security computer system before you can even apply) they will issue you a restricted SSN card that says "DHS Authorization required for Work".
If you apply for a SSN after you get your green card, it won't have that restriction printed on it.

Good luck to you!!

I know that I usually get grilled at the Detroit/Windsor tunnel and I'm a USC!! Posted Image So we will be sure to allow for extra time and just expect the possibility of getting sent to secondary!! We will make sure we bring all of his AOS/EAD/AP paper work along with passport and EAD/AP card!

CanadaGoing Back to Canada for a visit

I don't recall anyone here having trouble using their AP to get back into the US from Canada.... if the horror story comes from another country I wouldn't pay it any mind. That is precisely what your AP is for - travelling before your GC is in hand.

Bring the AP and copies of any NOA's from teh AOS process and that should be sufficient.

Thank you for your reply!! We should have the interview notice by then as well!!

CanadaGoing Back to Canada for a visit

I would not chance it myself. If hubby needs some KD ask someone to send him a care package.. Enjoy your thanksgiving. We were really hoping to celebrate this one together with his family but I guess it will have to wait yet another year.
Terri

I think it's really more than just wanting some Canadian items.... I think just being able to set foot back in his home country even for an afternoon is what he is really needing Posted Image but if it could be a problem we really don't want to chance it, hopefully his GC will be coming in a month or two. I was hoping to hear from somebody who's had experience with this at the Canadian border. Thanks!!

CanadaGoing Back to Canada for a visit
We are going up to Michigan for a visit during US Thanksgiving and were talking about maybe heading over to Windsor so my hubby could pick up a few canadian items he's been jonesing for....... Posted Image He got his EAD/AP card last week and the paper it was attached to said a lot of scary things about it not being a guarantee to be granted entry into the USA...... I understand that the Border Patrol has ultimate say in these things and can deny entry for a million reasons.....I was just wondering if anyone has had any issues with this.... I'd hate to lose my husband for another year over a box of Kraft dinner Posted Image

Canadadriver's license - what happens with a probationary?
Here in Indiana my husband was told he has to take both the written test and the driving skills test, and he's had a license for almost 20 years and has a commercial A-Z license, so yeah, it varies from state to state. He was also told his Canadian license was valid to drive on from 1 year of his POE... again... here in Indiana. You can call or look at your state's Department of Motor Vehicles website and should be able to find your answers.

When we were told my husband's visa was finally processed.... it took one week for them to get it printed and shipped. (they told us approx. 5-7 business days and they were right on)

CanadaAdministrative Processing?
Congressman might have an easier time dealing with the Department of State , but I think whichever one is most accessible to you would work!
S and PFemaleCanada2011-11-16 16:30:00
CanadaAdministrative Processing?
When my (now) husband's visa was taking an extremely long time to be issued, we called DOS several times trying to find out the status, we were told by one customer service rep that it was in Administrative Processing and it could take up to another month to be issued, but this was not the case, the words "Administrative Processing" get misused by those operators, and what they were really telling us was that the visas take "Administrative Work" after the interview process.... NOT the same thing... so you might not want to panic just yet, and keep calling DOS daily for whatever updates you can get.

So sorry to hear about all this mess for you!! Posted Image I hope they get it cleared up fast.
