Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionNebraska Service Center
I just mailed my I-751 packet to Nebraska Service Center a few days ago..they should receive it anytime..

My concern is, I plan to go back to Hong Kong for visit this May, how long does it usually take for them to mail me the notice to extend my green card for a year?(it expires April 25, 07)

The most important thing for me now is to get the notice on time so I can go back to HK and then come back after my green card expires.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionPlease tell me I'm worrying about nothing...
1. Membership cards like, Blockbuster cards or Sam's cards..etc with both of your names on them.

2. I don't think you have to have a job to have your name put onto the utility bills...you just have to call them/go to their local office to have your name put on it.

3. Your husband must have had to fill out the forms for the health insurance where he put your name under his policy, did he? He can ask his company for a copy of that.

4. Ask your landlord to write a notice stating that both of you are the residents with his signature and contact informtion on it...or did your landlord have both of you sign some kind of inspection sheet when you move in? That can help too.

5. Have your name added onto the title of your hubby's car.

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionQuestion about the NOA

You will receive another NOA that states that your I-751 was received and your are authorized to stay and work in the States for another year. :)

I have just received my NOA(YES!!!), showing me the date of the biometrics appointment, but I got no paperwork stating that the expiration date of my two year conditional green card(it expires April,25) will be extended for another year.

Does the NOA prove that my greencard is valid for another year, or do I have to get a stamp on my passport when I go to the biometrics?

Yup..just got it in the mail today. Thanks!!!

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionI-751 recently filed at Nebraska SC?

Well, I got my biometrics letter today, which is also a NOA, but no letter yet about extending my status for a year - strange. At least, I could entered the number from the biometrics into the USCIS system now, to get emails about the progress of my application.

I also got my NOA on Feb 24!!!
My biometrics appointment in on Mar 9, what about yours?

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionChange of Address

We filed our AR-11 and Change of Address (not the same thing) online while the I-751 was pending, and the card arrived today (addressed to the new address), no problems.

I like doing the address change online instead of calling because you get an instant written confirmation you can print out, whereas there's no proof you called and told them.

Don't forget that the sponsor also has to file the I-865.

Thank you for your help!

I'm not very sure how to do the e-filing, as I looked up the USCIS website, I couldn't find anything relating AR-11/I-865 e-filing..

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionChange of Address
I had my biometrics done on Mar 9, 2007, so now I'm just waiting for my 10-year green card in the mail. I have just moved into a new apt with my husband, and I know I need to file AR-11 to notify them the change of address. Since I know that the Homeland Security is not always working effectively as we expected, I'm afraid that they will still mail my green card to my old address even after filing AR-11. I know the post office won't forward those kind of mails that's why I'm concerned.

Anybody experienced this before? I probably should call them to notify them the change of address to make sure that they will put my new address into their system?

Removing Conditions on Residency General DiscussionHow can I get another extension?
I filed I-751 early last year and they had sent me an NOA(I-797) stating that my conditional status is extended for a year from date of expiration on my green card. So almost a year has passed and I have a month left now, how can I get another extension since my case is still pending(with Nebraska Service Center)? I've called their customer service and I couldn't find any information regarding extension of a conditional status whatsoever. Anybody experienced this?

Canadamissing Hockey night in Canada
NHL center ice sometimes airs the canadian feed, but it'####### and miss, and NHL network often carries hockey night in canada games (complete with Don & Ron during the first intermission Posted Image) My husband has turned me into a Sens fan and I do so much love to hear the canadian feed (Dean and Denny crack me up!!) People here don't care about hockey either ( we live in Indiana) I'm from Michigan originally so I was born and bred on the Red Wings, my family teases me that I had to marry a Canadian just so they could understand my hockey obsession! if you are asking if the I-129F (K-1) is an immigrant visa petition.... the answer is no.... it's considered a non-immigrant visa petition.

the sample form here shows NO being checked.

I'm pretty sure my fiance (now husband) checked NO on that box and didn't have any issues.

CanadaEI After Move to the USA

I don't know if many people realize that they are eligible for EI Benefits after you move the the USA to live with your spouse.
Just a few tips though, as it is a bit of a quagmire.

You can file your ROE online after you are done working. There is a two week waiting period before benefits start and you must be eligible to start a new job in the USA right away. I moved they day after I left my job in Canada.

You can sign up for direct deposit only if the bank account is in Canada, if not then they mail the cheques and it takes 10 days. It takes longer for the first $ to arrive so make surew you have some money set aside.

Once you give them your change of address to your new USA address, you can no longer access your EI account online, everything is done by phone to a special phone number just for us Canadians who have moved to the USA.

As soon as they have your change of address, you must send in a copy of your Green Card and your SSN to prove you are eligible to work in the USA, if you do not know this and only find out much later that you must send these in, you lose the weeks of entitlement between your first week of eligibility of ER up to the week you send in the GC and your SSN to the EI office.

No one will tell you all this information right off the bat, so when you get someone on the phone with Interstate EI. ask them everything you must do to start receiving EI Benefits.

I was very unimpressed with the EI office since I made every effort to make sure I knew what was expected of me and the office personnel I spoke with at length left out this important information and I lost 2 weeks of entitlement just like that.

One last thing is you call in your report every two weeks, you cannot do it on line and the mail is too slow. You call this number, leave your name and SIN and your message and they return your call and you do a verbal report on the phone. (Not too hard.)

I appealed and wrote a letter stating the facts, got a call from a very nice lady and she indicated that as soon as I changed my address to a US address ( the day after I stopped working in Canada), they needed the GC and my SSN, since I did not do this I lost my entitlement until they got what they need in their hand, proof I was legally allowed to work in the USA.
(After a brief discussion, she agreed to split the difference and I got one week reinstated.)

So know what you are supposed to do so you do not lose any weeks of entitlement.

If you have any questions I can try abd answer them

Have a good nite.

What information is needed when you call in your report?? Just what they ask for on the card?? or do they need names and numbers of places you've applied for work at? And how the heck to you get an actual person on the phone??!! My husband has only gotten an answering machine.. Posted Image

CanadaDoes a Canadian spouse have to pay taxes on American spouse's income?

I filed last month.

They ask if spouse is Canada resident/citizen or non resident. You will need to enter their income as it is used to determine whether you're eligible for the GST credit or not. It does not affect your taxes at all.

CanadaCanadian Taxes- Exit return

No he does not have to claim your income. In Canada everyone files an individual return (not like in the US where you can file married filing jointly) so he only has to be concerned with his individual income.

Since it is an international filing he will have to mail it in....he can not e-file. He can have direct deposit set up if he still has a Canadian bank account, but it can not be set up with a US bank. The international office also is not very fast. I guess since we are no longer residents we are not a big priority. Last year I didn't get my return until Mid-September and I filed mid-march, so don't count on the money anytime soon!

Bummers.....about the delay..... but that makes sense.

Thanks for the info!!Posted Image

My husband has a simple return..... and we are trying to avoid paying tax prep person to do this ( not sure if I can find one here in my backwards town that knows how to do Canadian taxes)...
Just need to know how he has to claim me.... USC spouse with only US income.
He came here on a K-1 last year, we got married and had his AOS approved last year.

CanadaVehicle import (from Canada) after PR
I seem to remember someone here saying that there is a ridiculous amount of time you have to import your personal belongings duty free when you immigrate... like 10 years or something..... hopefully someone else will chime in....

My husband came on a k-1 and imported his car with no issues, but he did it at the time of his POE.... I would think as long as your wife still has her passport with her K-1 visa in it that would be proof enough to avoid paying duty. You might want to call the CBP office where you will be crossing first, ask for a supervisor, they could probably give you the information you are needing.

CanadaWhat's For Dinner - Part Deux

Wow. Been a long time since I've been in this thread.

I imagine you've long since had that chicken pasta with asparagus but I thought I'd reply to your question.

What I do is one of two things..... after you've browned the chicken and removed it from the pan, saute some sliced onions until opaque, then add some white wine, a squeeze of lemon, and maybe a bit of chicken broth or salt and pepper (to taste), and then a bit of cream. You could also add capers. For a creamer sauce without the cream I add garlic and herb cream cheese and then add broth until I get the right consistency. Or you could use plain cream cheese, or even salmon. I only use Canadian cream cheese if I'm using the herbed or salmon kind because the American ones I've found don't taste the same.

You're probably not even going to read this. lol

I saw this thread get bumped up and I thought... *hey...nobody ever replied about a white wine cream sauce*.... Posted Image
Thank you!! That's what I kinda did when I tried to make it the first time, but I added a tablespoon of flour, and some heavy cream, but I didn't like the floury flavor. I never thought of using cream cheese....I've never had Canadian cream cheese, so I won't know what I'm missing! Posted Image

I may just have to give that a try this weekend.

Does anybody have a good white wine sauce recipe that doesn't use a lot of heavy cream?? Lemony is okay...just not heavy on the cream or oil. Something that would go good with chicken pasta and asparagus. THANKS!

This sounds wonderful!! Posted ImageI actually have some Lemon-pepper pasta I found at Trader Joe's and have been looking for something good to use it in!! Thank you!! Posted Image

Oh sure! There's no real recipe.... just what I had in my cupboard.

Ingredients:

- Lemon-pepper linguini (or regular if you can't find lemon-pepper)
- 1 chicken breast, cut into bite-size strips
- 1 small jar of marinated artichokes, drained
- 1 tablespoon capers
- ~ 12 olives (I like Unico anchovy-stuffed green olives but you can't get them in the US so any olives you like will do)
- half a vidalia onion, cut in half and then sliced with the grain (no idea how to explain this)
- 3 cloves chopped garlic
- 1 tsp chili/red pepper flakes
- 1/3 cup olive oil

Fry the chicken and onion in a bit of oil at medium temp. Add the garlic and cook for additional minute. Add remaining oil, artichokes, capers, red pepper flakes, and olives, and cook for another minute or two. Stir in cooked (al dente) pasta and serve topped with shaved parmigiano-reggiano.

Canadabring cell phone to the interview

I understand that any electronic devices are not allowed at the Consulate. In Toronto, they would actually let you check in small items at the security desk and give you a number/tag to pick it up on your way out, do they do the same thing in Montreal? We'd like to bring one cell phone with us if possible.

Thanks,
Helen

You might want to check the MTL consulate's website to be sure... but unless something has changes since last year..... no... you can't bring in a cellphone... you can't even have the little electronic key for your car.... no electronic devices..... and there was no provision to check items in.

CanadaMontreal August 2011 Interviews!

So I'm in a panic about my medical, guys.

USCIS lost it, and as soon as they sent the RFE, I scheduled an exam for May 15th. Yes, that was the soonest they could get me in. My RFE response is due June 8th.

Now they're telling me that I need the syphillis test and TB test done BEFORE my medical and those results can take three weeks to get. If they don't have the results, then they can't do my medical.

What if I can't get this all done in time? Do they even offer extensions on RFEs?

I'm so upset, this isn't even my fault and I'm scrambling to fix someone else's error.

So sorry to hear about this!! Posted Image
This will probably sound crazy... but maybe you should try calling USCIS and asking for a tier 2 supervisor and ask these same questions.... who knows... they may actually have an answer... Posted Image ....stranger things have happened!
I tried looking at the USCIS website and searching under RFE's and of course found no answers...(no surprise there)

Good luck to you!!
