PhilippinesDid you buy your ticket before or after the interview?
QUOTE (djturbo @ Jan 22 2008, 11:52 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Well put Roserick and thats the reason why we are not planning to purchase a travel ticket for my wife until we learn she has been approved. Anyways she wants to spend few more days with her family in Philippines cuz of her father's birthday soon after ner interview. Thats the reason why we are just going to wait until we are finally really ready for her to be here until any Airline ticket purchase. Its fine with me, I just want my wife to be happy nothing else..!!

My wife (fiance at the time) didn't want to fly to the USA by herself and I definately wasn't going to miss her interview. I don't blame her, she had never even been to Manila until her medical. I would have had to buy another plane ticket and return again to fly back with her anyway.

The only "rant" that comes to mind is one time I posted something about an email from from USCIS after the fact and I'm not even sure if that would qualify as a rant. Oh well......I really try to avoid it. innocent.gif

Oh come on you bunch of chickens...LOL Just kidding you all. I'm a gambler. I bought her one way ticket shortly after I learned of her interview date. During the interview, which I attended, we asked that she was allowed to pick up the visa in person. Our wish was granted but no promises were made on the date. Her interview was on a Friday, so after the interview we flew to Samar that Saturday for a celebration espidida (spelling?). We received a call or text on Wednesday or Thursday I can't remember, that her visa was ready for pickup. We flew back to Manila and picked up her visa and then stayed in Phils until the next Wednesday I think.

It was a gamble and a little nerve racking waiting to be contacted about the pickup but in the end it was worth it because I was able to attend the interview and we were able to fly back together. That was July 2007. I'm not sure if a lot of people are doing it that way now or not.

Good luck on whatever you decide. Our case was fairly simple with no kids involved.

Philippinesphils calling card quality
Hi Phils residents,

Just wondering, if you have a partner in the USA do they ever uses calling cards? I bought 20$ worth of cards online one time and the quality was so poor I didn't even use up the minutes. We couldn't understand each other with all the echoes.

I'm wondering if there are better quality services out there. I searched for calling card reviews for the phils but haven't had any luck. I've been using my CP at 20 cents per min. with my international plan but now my parents want to call us when I'm there in phils and they don't have the international plan on their phone service.

I'm taking my phone with me so I will have one in the states while in other airports. Last time I left it with them and its a nightmare using payphones.

Just looking for good quality phone card with less echo for phils calls. Price is not the most important thing, it's quality.

PhilippinesDoes your wife think the US is too cold ?

Bet it wasn't 4 below and windy when she took those PICs.... My wife and In-Laws thought the PICs were cute.

I got my wife out in the first snow last December,,, she won't let me post the PIC though as she was almost 9 months
preggy.

Regards,

You're right, I was at work when she took them. She said it was 24 degrees F and no wind.

She's not the average filipina when it comes to handling the cold. The place she works is almost 90% filipino contract workers and most of them are bundled up pretty well while she's carrying her coat. They are always telling her to put it on. We keep our furnace set at about 65. (I'm kuripot)

Tell your wife women are beautiful preggy. It's God's gift right? :D

Take care,

I guess it's actually Cuddl Duds with no "e" now that I look. We get them at JCPenney's. There are several styles. We've tried to find XS that they list on the packages but have never found them (even online). They run about 20$ for the tops and 20$ for the bottoms but we never pay full price. They're always on sale at Penney's.

My wife handles the cold here VERY well. I bought her Cuddle Duds to wear under her clothes and she loves them. They are insulated underwear for women. She doesn't like the cold wind blowing in her face and always wears a scarf when it's bitterly cold like it is today. It was 4 below zero when we left for work this morning at 5am. Here are a couple pics she took herself the first winter she was here.

PhilippinesVisiting The Philippines with my Wife
Hi Everyone,

I have a couple of questions about our upcoming trip to The Philippines. I will be traveling with my wife who is still a Philippine citizen. There is a chance that we will be staying for more than 21 days. We are about to buy our airline tickets very soon. Our stay will be 21-23 days long. Since I am traveling with my wife, will I be allowed to stay longer than 21 days without applying for an extension? I believe this is allowed under the "balikbayan" program, is this correct? If so, where can we find out more about the balikbayan program and its benifits for my wife. She hasn't been back to The Philippines for about 3 1/2 years.

Thanks for any replies,

There are a couple other airlines flying to Catarman but the times and days aren't good for us. We might have to wait till we're in Manila to buy tickets I suppose. Hi All,

We're going to be in Phils in a few weeks and need to buy tickets from Manila to Catarman Samar. Last time we flew Asian Spirit. The were sold and renamed Zest Airways in 2008. We looked at tickets on their website a while back and now the site is gone completely. Links to it on other websites don't work either.

Does anybody know anything about Zest Airways? I read a news story from 3 days ago that said they were getting 4 more planes. I think they're still in business but I don't know how to contact them.

PhilippinesPhils to Vancouver to USA
Please allow a rant about our recent trip to the Philippines, United Airlines, and Vancouver International.

We thought we'd save about $400 on airline tickets and fly through Vancouver Canada. We were flying out of Chicago O'hare on United, tranferring to Philippine Airlines in Vancouver and on to Manila. When we arrived in Chicago and tried to check in, two United employees told us my wife was not allowed to fly through Canada. After about 10 minutes of panic with my wife being very close to tears, a woman came up and asked, does she have a green card? We said yes and she just nodded. The other employees had no idea what was going on and claimed that United had been fined for sending passengers to Canada in the past without a visa. After a few more tense moments we got our boading passes.

When we arrived in Vancouver we were told we had to receive our checked baggage and go through customs by Vancouver officials. We went to the carousel and waited and waited. We asked a Vancouver employee and they just said wait. Finally another employee came to us and said our checked baggage was being transferred to Philippine Air but we still had to go through customs for Canada. We were told later by a customs official that we shouldn't have gone through customs. (it was a 5 hour layover)

On our way home we had a 9 hour layover scheduled in Vancouver. The Philippine Air employee told us our baggage would be transferred to United and we would touch it until Chicago. When we arrived in Canada an official was calling my name when we got off the plane. They informed us that we WOULD need to collect our baggage and go through customs.

After customs (and surrendering some canned meat) we sat down for our long wait. I scanned the flight board and saw that our 11 pm flight to Chicago was cancelled. GRRRRR While talking to the United employee I was told there was no flight crew for the flight! They put us up in the airport hotel and gave us 2 food vouchers. I was happy to hear that. We ate in the airport at about 8:30 pm and went to the room to sleep. I woke up with what I think was food poisoning a couple hours later. It was touch and go the whole trip home after that, I couldn't eat or drink anything. (4 hour flight and 4 hour drive)

Sorry for the long rant, I just wanted to let people know in case they chose the same route we did. I hope you have better luck than we did. We will fly through California or Minnesota next time.

Sincerely,
Kev & Jena

The only people that can truly offend me are people whose opinion I respect. With that in mind, I'm rarely offended.

I'll relate a quick incident. I was in a situation where a middle aged women who had obviously had too much to drink tried to strike up a conversation with me. I could tell by her initial choice of words that the conversation wouldn't go well. After telling me a couple of very crude jokes she could tell she wasn't getting to me and she claimed I was offended. I just laughed and explained my position to her that she couldn't offend me because I had no repect for her opinion. She quickly moved on to her next victim after that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think you can buy beef imported from Phils here in the states. There are very strict laws on the importation of beef here and only certain countries that have testing programs are allowed to import it.

Even after living here for 4 years, my wife (and her coworkers) were very sad that the meat didn't make it into the country. They say the canned beef available here just isn't the same.

PhilippinesCanned Meats Prohibited
Hello,

Just a note for anyone entering the USA & Canada. We just got home from a 3 week trip to the Philippines. My wife wanted to bring in some canned corned beef and meat loaf. When we got our declaration form I decided to play it safe to avoid a fine and I checked the box that referred to meat products. I actually thought they meant fresh meat, not cooked meat in a can, but again, I was playing it safe. When we arrived in Canada we were asked to show our luggage to the agriculture inspector. He informed us that canned meat was not allowed to enter Canada or the USA and it would have to be destroyed. (my wife wasn't happy)

I know people bring it in all the time but it's not legal.

PhilippinesBest way to send $2000
Copied from WU website:

Currency Exchange. In addition to the transfer fee, Western Union also makes money when it changes your dollars into foreign currency. Please see the Terms and Conditions portion of the web site for more information regarding currency exchange.

Payments will generally be in local currency (except that in certain countries payment may be in U.S. dollars or other alternate currency at participating locations). In addition to the transfer fees applicable to this transaction, a currency exchange rate will be applied. United States currency is converted to foreign currency at an exchange rate set by Western Union. Any difference between the rate given to Customers and the rate received by Western Union will be kept by Western Union (and its Agents in some cases) in addition to the transfer fees. Please ask a customer service representative for information concerning the currency exchange rate applicable to your transaction. You may also find out the current foreign exchange rate provided by Western Union to its customers by calling toll-free to 1-800-325-6000.

The transfer fees and the money Western Union (or its Agents) makes when it changes your dollars into foreign currency may vary based upon the payout currency that you select. Some Western Union Agents may offer receivers the choice to receive funds in a currency different from the one you selected. In such instances, Western Union (or its Agents) may make additional money when it changes your funds into the Receiver selected currency.

I called the 800 number and WU exchange rate is 41.713 compared to the actual rate of 42.92 right now. (worse than xoom and higher fee on top of that)

If I send US dollars, the recipient will need to convert them. I'm not sure what kind of rate they can get in the small province town they are in. It's basically a wash between XOOM and WU for us.

Good idea! I've taken my debit card in the past and had no problems with that...just always fear of losing it. The WU deal would probably be better.

Check the rates between WU & XOOM. We always use XOOM. We just sent 2,300 US and it cost 5.99. When we were in Samar a few weeks ago we sent ourselves $300 the same way.

The first time we sent through XOOM it took awhile, (5 days) to clear our account. Now it takes just seconds.

oh just to be blunt with you, we are a young aged couple and we are both starting in life.. independent and we basically will only have just the 2 of us who will have to strive for anything and not be asking for any inlaws to help us out. isn't the question obvious that we have to prepare and save up for the necessary expenses that we need? id much appreciate it if you just helped answer my question but of course, expect nothing frm a stranger. thanks for ur time typing such unnecessary question.. gesus!

I thought maybe you'd take that question the way you did. I'm glad to hear that is the reason. I hope you understand there could have been several reasons that a person would ask the EXACT AMOUNT in all caps like that.

You could have been the petitioner and not trust your fiance. That would not be good.

You could have been the applicant and think that your fiance doesn't trust you. That wouldn't be good either.

Thankfully neither is the case apparently. I just want to say as many have said before, expect the best and plan for the worst. Major expenses can pop up when you least expect it. Health insurance in the US is a major expense many people don't think about. To go without it can lead to a fast bankruptcy.

You might be filipino if you have to pay 3 or 4 different government fees in order to take a job.

You might be filipino if you refuse to take a picture with 3 people in it. 2 is ok and more than 3 is ok. 3 is unlucky because 1 might die!

A couple little things I found funny, one came up today. Jena's been here 4 years but every once in awhile she'll tell me about something she found strange when she got here.

Today we saw a sign that said "Watch for ice on bridges". She said when she first got here in July, she couldn't figure out why the signs were there but never asked me about it. After traveling on the snow and ice a few times she figured it out but she never mentioned it until today.

She also said, lots of people she knows in Phils thought the snow made it cold outside, she figured out it's the other way around.

Philippinesvisa interview and fiancee age
:P Back in 07, Jena had her CFO seminar in Cebu, then got her stamp in Manila. She was 22 when she did her CFO seminar so we had her parents write a letter and have it notarized. She was never asked for the letter.

Sorry for this next slightly off topic point but it's interesting:

At the last minute, Jena's parents decided they didn't want to provide a notarized letter of consent. :crying: They were told by friends that we should get married in Phils because there is no divorce in Phils. I guess they were worried we'd get divorced in the US. We had already applied for a K1 at that point and their refusing was going to cause major problems. Jena was living in a different city at the time and after a very serious phone call home, things were thankfully resolved and they provided the letter! :D

In the end, no one even looked at the danged thing. :bonk:

We finally did our "report of marriage" this year, 3 years late! :P

PhilippinesWhat did I do wrong?

Well, is it a good one?

IMPO Tampo is a desirable trait when compared to what I went through in a previous 19 year relationship/marriage. When I say tampo, I'm refering to the withdrawl of affection mentioned in the above link. I had a hard time dealing with it during the first few years of our relationship. I was used to arguing and making my point. When tampo is deployed at our house, there's no arguing, no speaking, no communication at all for the duration. Thankfully it doesn't last long compared to other couples I've read about and only happens rarely.(once or twice per year maybe)

I would compare her tampo to me raising my voice and swearing. We both try to keep these things to a minimum and realize that when they happen, it means the other person is very angry or hurt by our actions or words.

We've discussed this thread and that led to more talk about our relationship. We had a very healthy conversation! Thanks to VJ

First of all, if the OP was scammed into a marriage, he's not gonna be thrown in jail because of it. Most likely, he'll look like just another older man who 'dared to dream' that some 20 year old beauty came here for him, and not the GC.

The 'no longer his property' comment is really odd and interesting at the same time. No living being should be viewed as chattel, although I guess there are other opinions.

I do wonder if this ability to dismiss this wretched behavior as 'tampo' is partly due to an age difference. It sounds like many of the men who have learned to deal with it have done so employing the same tactics I'm using to teach my son. Would anyone assume that it's pretty standard for a woman of a certain age to act this way? Or is it somehow more easily accepted as 'cultural' even though it seems there's definitely a dynamic of father figure and child at play.

Do you know the age difference between the OP and his wife? BTW, I'm one of those guys that "dared to dream" as you put it. So far the dream has been very sweet.

PhilippinesWhat did I do wrong?
Ok, as much as I hate to, I have to mention it. She just got her 10 yr. GC last month. I hope that has nothing to do with the situation. The whole thing about her saying she doesn't love you anymore bothers me. How did she fall out of love with you?
