PhilippinesZero American Pride!!!!

Every time i have went to the philippines i have always flown Korean Air. This time around i choose to go with United Airlines to save a few dimes. That was the biggest mistake of my whole visajourney so far. I am going to venture to say that all American owned Airlines are like this one. I cannot stand these Union Card holding B!tch employee's. They are the nastiest rudiest people i have ever had the displeasure of being served by. Each way there and back i had four legs of flights and on ever flight me and Monreal were disrepected by an employee from United Airlines. I have never had this kind of experience on Korean Air. Who the Hell am i going to call to make some serious complaints, oh what a second. If i call United Airlines i get to talk to someone from the philippines at a call center. How the hell can you chew out a philipina? You just cant. I really hate the fact that when someone holds a union card, they can be a B!tch to you and get away with it because they are protected. I will never fly any American owned airline again.

I agree. We had an awful experience the last time we flew United through Vancouver to The Philippines before and after connecting with Phiilppine Airlines.

It's funny you mention unions. I think they may have had their place in the American work force years ago and did some really good things, but I think they've been the ruin of many American companies in the last few decades. Our public schools are no exception imo.

We may pay an extra $400 per ticket next time and try Asiana Airlines.

PhilippinesProblems with Family....need advice
If your fiance is anything like my wife Jena, she will win them over quickly. I would advise most men to be up front from the very begining though. I think I told my folks a couple weeks after Jena and I were chatting online that something big was happening in my life. I was sure to caution them but after my first trip, they all knew it was a done deal and to accept it or forget me.

I only had one or two snide comments from my sister the first time I told her. Now, after five years and the only grandchild being born in to our family, they would pick her over me if it came to that.

Living in midwest is kinda mild between too cold and too hot. I just wish to have snow here soon. Last year, we barely had snow here. First time I had snow here in US was during my husband's birthday on October. We were in Galena, IL.

I rather have low temp than high temp. :-P

Don't worry, the snow will be here soon enough :help: This is just a small part of our driveway we have to keep clear of snow!

My wife isn't a trooper at all with the Minnesota cold. If she feels cold air on her skin she says she's cold lol. But then I've spoiled her to the hilt. Last winter, which was so mild, she spent in the house with the temperature set at 80. She started working in the spring and we bought her a new car. Its parked in a tuck under garage and has heated seats. She warms it up before leaving either from home or work with a remote start. This year we're working at exposing her to in house temps of 76 in the morning and 78 in the evening. Of course at work she needs to live with the work set temps. She's got some very warm gear so she can be outside, but doesn't like being weighed down so much. She's not too worried about the cold this year though, like she was the first winter. Now she's worried about learning to drive in the snow. She's already a cautious driver, so I'm not really worried about her catching on quickly. As to Mille Lacs, she was in total amazement at being out on the ice last year. I'd shown her pictures and video of being on the ice before she got here, still she found it hard to believe we were driving around on and sitting in a house on the ice.

Wow, we keep the house at 71 deg. now only for the 8 month old. Jena never really gets cold and the last time we vacationed in Phils she mentioned she could never move back to that climate. We both enjoy the 4 seasons here in central IL. She went ice skating her first year here and some friends were ice fishing on the same pond. The only thing that freaked her out was the cracking noise of the ice and her butt was a little sore the next day

Yep its a crazy December in the northland right now. My wife doesn't realize how easy she's been getting off on Minnesota winters, this one and last years. BTW she still thinks its cold though

You're welcome, I'd like to take credit for all the nice weather we've been having in the midwest. I've been burning diapers and other plastics here in rural Illinois in an attempt to stave off winter. Sorry about the drought if it affected you.

PhilippinesPhil/Am Christmas Parties

If they do have a Santo Nino prayer group, I'm not aware of it. We're really not that tight with the group, we have our own circle of Fil/AM friends who we mostly hang out with. We just go to the bigger events they host, although we are members of the group. There's actually more than one Fil/Am group in the Minneapolis/ST Paul area. We joined the other group to, but it appears they lost our application but kept the money, as they've never put us on their mailing list  Then there's the Filipino student group, a Filipino Church, and a Filipino Women's Network, Philippines Center (which recently purchased their own building), plus more. Some are closely related and some seem to act in competition with each other.

I'd like to discuss the "competition" sometime but I think that's for another thread. Should I start one?

BTW, your wife got her wish BIG TIME! (Paquiao)

The Pasko celebration was in Lake Elmo (east of St Paul) at Guardian Angels Church. Sorry I didn't see this until now.
Below is a link to the groups facebook page. They usually add events to it before they come up, but not always. If you go to their notes section of the FB page, they have a link to their google calendar, which shows everything they're up to.
https://www.facebook.../csfamn?fref=ts

The next event they have is
CSFA Carolers at Simbang Gabi
When
Sat, December 22, 6am – 7am
Where
Blessed Sacrament Church, 1801 LaCrosse Avenue Saint Paul, MN 55119

Do they also do a traveling Santo Nino prayer group throughout the year? The way I understand it, the statue travels from house to house and the group gathers for prayers and a meal each month. I'm not sure if I have all the details correct. We've been invited but that would mean our house would have to be spotless and it seems like a lot of work ;)

PhilippinesPhil/Am Christmas Parties

We just had ours last night, Saturday, December 8. We got there a little late though because my wife had to work until 7PM. About the only thing left to eat were some of the deserts. It was funny though, because in the midst of all the loud noise, large groups of filipinas giggling and grouping together cheek to cheek for group pictures in their satiny party dresses, and all that, my wife blurts out to me from across the table "They all look the same to me!" I laughed, because I told her I thought me being the white guy was supposed to think that. But she said after all this time of living and working around white people, the Filipinas all start looking alike to her, with all black or dark brown hair, same length, same facial structures, same body builds for the most part... It just was sort of funny to me to hear that coming from her, "they all look the same!"

Had a great time at the party last night. As usual, I brought a flask of Scotch to take the edge off of the entertainment

As far as looking alike, I figured that out in a mall in Manila when my wife took off to look for a pair of jeans and I tried to find her. I quickly figured out that womens jeans aren't all in one section of the store. They're scattered out all over the place. I had a sales woman dragging me over the entire store looking for my wife, the one with a purple flower in her hair. That was the only distiguishing characteristic I could give them.

PhilippinesHow did you filipina wife change after you married her and took her to your home country?

I've been a teacher and coach professionally for almost forty years. This was one of the most frustrating experiences of that entire span, although once I figured out the problems it went much better.

Kevo mentions "natural" driving ability. Americans like me were biking at six, driving rigs on the farm when we were twelve years old and before that sitting in Dad's lap with the steering wheel. Driving as a passenger facing forward - getting accustomed to it instead mindlessly riding in a jeepney looking out the sides and not paying attention to anything. So there's a lot of training they don't have - some have not even had a bicycle. She seemed to have no concept at all of speed, so cornering was extremely frightening. I had to pull the emergency brake sometimes.

I'm appalled at the eductational system there that inculcated a lack of initiative and critical thinking. If I used terms she did not understand she would not ask me to define them, which is just incredible to me. Abstract thinking was difficult, so if I said "Blind Spot" and then explained it the problem was I still had to go out of the car and stand in the blind spot and ask if she could see me. She's a bright girl, but went through a horrible education system. Never saw a map, or a 3-D representation of objects.

And with the sounds - yeah. This was a sore spot between us in the beginning: being extremely lazy about not speaking in complete sentences. She's broken of that habit and gets frustrated with her own family for it now.

In the Philippines it seems they don't have that relentless drive to follow through with things and instead take any excuse to give up. If they call a bureaucrat to get a question answered and the bureaucrat says they don't know - that's the end of it. "I called and he said his department does not answer that question". Well get back on the phone honey and ask him what department DOES answer the question. Then don't stop there: call that department and get the answer. Sheesh! Get the question answered.

God Almighty though the most difficult thing of all was thinking ahead. Looking down the road half a mile and planning instead of realizing the car has now slowed down to ten miles an hour because you have been on a steep hill for half a mile. Ten miles an hour up the hill. Eighty miles an hour down the other side.

That is from having no experience in cars whatsoever before coming here.

Getting a drivers license is one thing Jena hasn't accomplished here yet. She went through drivers training at the local junior college and got her permit. One problem we had after that was our vehicles. My work car was new but it was a manual transmission and my other vehicle is an F150. Neither vehicle was a good candidate for learning to drive. I gave her several lessons in the manual transmission car but it just seemed like there were too many things to think about to learn quickly. We now have a third vehicle, an SUV, but we also have an 8 month old that makes giving lessons very difficult.

We hope to work on it in the spring.

PhilippinesHow did you filipina wife change after you married her and took her to your home country?

Make sure you learn everything about the Philippine culture before you embark on a serious relationship with someone from another culture. I purchased several books about the Philippines and the culture to educate myself. It gave me insight and I was glad I did it. When I started dating my now wife, I had a better understanding of her and her background. I also had some friends from the Philippines and they were able to bring me up to speed on the culture.

I contacted a Filipino/American couple near me and got to know them. They actually met Jena in person on the next trip they took to Mindanao after my first trip over. I also went to the local Filipino store and introduced myself to the owner. My parents have a Filipino neighbor and I got to know her too. Upon Jena's arrival we hit a Fil/Am picnic a month after she got here. I'd say we know at least 100 Filipinos in our area now. They come to our house to buy and butcher goats and chickens. I like drinking with the guys and talked them into Texas Holdem last time. (I won ) I hired one of the guys to work part time in the shop I work at. Best worker I've ever had.

Too bad DGs not around, he could tell you all about the culture

Cheers to all of us! Magandang Araw Sa Lahat and Good Day To Everyone! lol

Since today is a nice day, I just thought to make a nice topic about how wonderful your inlaws are? Since, I was still in the Phillipines, I've been chatting my in laws online ( of course after I met my husband). I felt like I was already close to their family. They already treated me as one of their families. When my husband's first visited me, he brought a nice little jewelry box with a gold bracelet in it and it had a note that said "Think of us when you wear it, From Mom and Dad". I thought it was so sweet of them. I still remember when they sent a package of chocolates, a check for my birthday and photos. That was so thoughtful of them, wasn't it?

My husband (but he was my fiancee that time) and I flew together to the US. It felt so good that my in laws were in the airport waiting and anxious to meet me and carrying a sign says "Welcome Jena, We all love you" with a bouque of flowers. It feels so good and reassuring that they all love me and hug me. I still have lots of good things to share about what they have done for me. However, Gusto ko naman marinig ang sa inyo. I know marami din kayong ma i share to us...I always thank to God for all the goodness I have gotten since and then. I'm very thankful for having a wonderful parents and learning a good morals from them. Hanggang dito nalang po ako...

I hope na ma i share naman po ninyo ang mga goodness nila for you. good.gif Have a good day mga ka VJ :dance

I've got to ask, because some one has to do it, why are the Philippines so apparently overrepresented on VJ in terms of K-1 beneficiaries? I understand that the country makes up somewhere around 1.37% of the world population, but my sense is that somewhere around 75% of the k-1 beneficiaries on this site are from the Philippines. What gives?

Steve,

I'm going to approach your question with an open mind.

Your claim of 75% may be a bit of an exaggeration. I would have to guess Filipinos make up about 20% of the K1 filers on VJ. You may argue that is still an overrepresentation. Keep in mind not all countries teach english in their school systems. I believe this is a big factor when trying to start or maintain a relationship. I think that single factor can explain quite a bit of the disparity.

Speaking purely from personal experience, I never intended to marry a Filipina. It just happened. After we met online I made it a point to find as many American men married to Filipinas as I could and listen to their stories. ALL, 100% WERE POSITIVE about their marriages. I can't say the same for American/American marriages, far from it.

When I found VJ, well after filing by the way, it was through Google.

So far, after knowing my wife for almost four years, I couldn't be happier.

I hope you, your future wife and future child have a great life together,

You don't have to report your marriage with the immigration because that's what the AOS --adjustment of status-- is for. If you want to report your marriage, you do it with the Philippine Consulate, but if I were you, I will focus on AOS first, since you have a year to inform Philippine Consulate about your marriage. SS is not needed for the AOS. If you want to save yourself from going back and forth to SSA, I'd change the maiden name into married one after you got the EAD or GC. It's because if you change it now, you will still receive your SS card with the notation that you cannot work unless DHS authorized. That notation will be removed from your card once you received either EAD or GC. So basically, you'll have another trip back to SSA.

A quick question, You only have one year to inform the Philippine Consulate about your marriage? She's never had any contact with the Consulate. What happens if you don't? My wife already has her GC and SS in her married name. She'll be doing "removal of conditions this fall.

We grilled them and ate them all. He thought it was good. I'm going to cook sweet and sour fish later, since my husband requested it. good.gif

PhilippinesLDR's or Long-Distance Relationships
We finally met in person after one year of internet conversation. I asked her to marry me and she accepted. After that, I rented a room for her with WI-FI and we chatted cam to cam twice every day until my 2nd trip to phils for her interview. We flew back together.

I think the fact that she was able to live alone really helped when she came to the US. There was much less shock from leaving her family and it was almost like we were living together.

I think people learn more about each other during LDR's than actually being with each other all the time. We had no choice but to talk and talk about all kinds of subjects. Now, we have a great relationship and I wouldn't change a thing! She's been here 2 1/2 years.

PhilippinesHow do you like your new American hometown?
I love our place very much. I haven't had any trouble at all. I love watching the wild birds too. We have many varieties of them. We have 5 chickens (1 rooster & 4 hens). My husband bought them, so it reminds me of phils. We get eggs everyday. We just give some of them to our neighbors. We have 10 acres of land. Most of our friends likes our place, especially pilipinos. I really like our place. It's surrounded by trees, peaceful, quiet and fresh and we can also be just about naked outside. laughing.gif blush.gif

PhilippinesHow did u present your pictures during the interview?
We printed 2 pictures on each 8 1/2 x 11 photo paper. I think it was about 12 pictures (6 pages).

The especially liked the pictures of my family holding a "Welcome Jena" sign and commented how nice it was to show she had new family waiting for her.

We also had pics of my family holding the Philippine flag. BUT, we made the mistake of holding the flag upside down! :bonk: I showed the pic to my Jena and she said, uh oh hun, that means you are at war! We didn't submit those

PhilippinesHi, Any Pinay in Indianapolis?

Hello

My Fiance isn't here yet we are still in the K-1 visa process but we will be living in about 2 hours west off I70 in Illinois.

In regards to the balikbayan boxes.

Are those the boxes that make it easy to ship items to and from the Phillipines?

Could someone explain more what the contents can or can not be; also cost...Please.

Hi Evli1966,

Lots of Pinay near you down there. My wife & I visit Mattoon friends several times each year for birthdays, etc.

Balikbayan boxes can contain just about anything legal to ship to Phils. They are not charged by weight, they are charged by size. The ones we ship are 28 x 18 x 18 I think. They can be as heavy as you want as long as 2 normal people can lift the box. It usually costs between 80-115 $ depending on destination in Phils. They take about 6 weeks to get there, again depending on destination.

Hi guys,

My wife & I live about 1 hour West of Indy. We have a filipina friend there in Indy with a small business. She ships balikbayan boxes for us sometimes. She'll even pick them up at your house. I can give you her webpage if you pm us.

PhilippinesMarried life is great
"I didn't realize the full extent of how narrow-minded dumb hicks are in rural communities in the midwest until I got married to a foreigner and started walking around with her in the grocery store."

Well, first of all, we live in the "midwest" and I haven't noticed the staring being that bad. We've gone to small towns too. I'm from a town of 350 people so please don't throw the entire midwest under the bus.

We get the occasional glance but I don't know if its race. It may very well be the 20 year age gap and racial difference combined. I don't really care. Over the past 2 1/2 years that my wife has been here, I've actually only heard one rude comment. "talk about robbing the cradle" It was from a man with a "wife beater" shirt, long greasy hair, and unshaven. I just laughed because I'm sure it was prompted by jealousy.

On another occasion a man was staring at us in the local grocery store and I could tell he wanted to talk to me. After a minute or so he came up to me and very nervously said, "so where did you two meet?" I was kind of shocked since I had no idea who he was and it seemed like such an odd question. I answered, "We met online, she's from The Philippines." I could see the wheels turning in his head and he says, "oh! well, uhhh... I see you guys in here all the time and I just wondered" I bet he was surfing the net that night LOL

Anyway, we just hold our heads high and look right back if we do get a stare, and people usually turn away in shame. I'm proud of my wife, she's proud of me, that's what really matters.

PhilippinesYou're lucky to have him
I asked my wife about this topic. Many of her co-workers are filipino. We go bowling with a lot of them and I'm usually the only kano. She's told me many times that her friends and co-workers tell her how lucky she is to have me. (I'm the lucky one!) I asked her why they say that and she says they think I'm handsome, kind, and look so young. I'll take her word on that one. Never look a gift horse in the mouth they say.

For those who don't know, that's one way to tell how old a horse is.

PhilippinesDid you buy your ticket before or after the interview?

I already got my visa since jan 19, but still we havent purchased our tickets. laughing.gif

maybe this week nalang. laughing.gif

-jyz rose.gif

But it think buying it before the interview gives you an advantage, for it will be your reason for visa pick-up.
Isn't it, Sis Lheds? biggrin.gif

But it clearly states not to make travel plans...

Roserick,

Speaking of clearly. You're clearly beating a dead horse here. Obviously making travel plans hasn't been grounds for denial or delay in the recent past. To the contrary, it's been used as a reason to actually speed up the process. That said, it may not be the best idea given the current state of affairs ie: document checking. I don't know. Has anyone been able to pick up their visa in the last month?

You makes yo choices, you takes yo chances...

Well put Roserick and thats the reason why we are not planning to purchase a travel ticket for my wife until we learn she has been approved. Anyways she wants to spend few more days with her family in Philippines cuz of her father's birthday soon after ner interview. Thats the reason why we are just going to wait until we are finally really ready for her to be here until any Airline ticket purchase. Its fine with me, I just want my wife to be happy nothing else..!!

My wife (fiance at the time) didn't want to fly to the USA by herself and I definately wasn't going to miss her interview. I don't blame her, she had never even been to Manila until her medical. I would have had to buy another plane ticket and return again to fly back with her anyway.
