US Citizenship General DiscussionDumb question time
Am I required to bring passport photos to the citizenship testing/interview? It doesn't state anything to that effect on my appointment letter.

I'm having the citizenship testing/interview tomorrow and feel quite confident about answering the questions I'm given. It sure helped to live along a border and also be taught alot about the U.S. in school when I was growing up.

Thanks.

US Citizenship General DiscussionUpdate on citizenship interview/testing
I was in and out of our local office (Boise) in 20 minutes. I got all the questions right. The officer didn't ask for any additional proof or ask to see originals. Didn't require the passport photos that I decided to take in. Oath ceremony on October 23rd - just in time for voting. Woo hoo!

Thanks to both of you. I'll bring several pieces of ID and documents to show he belongs to me...lol. We are flying from Boise to Buffalo and then crossing over at the U.S. Canada border at Christmas time to see our family for two weeks. For now I just wanted to get a U.S. passport for him to use to come back into the U.S. to prove he's a U.S. citizen. As for myself I was going to hold off on the passport and just show my Citizen certificate. I'd apply for my passport later on. It's all about money right now or should I say, "lack of". I had no problem using the green card in the past when entering the U.S. by land and have read the certificate would suffice along with driver's licence.

If you are looking for more savings he or you can just get the passport card, It will be only 30-40 dlls and is good when returning from Canada and Mexico. Just be careful when applying because it takes longer than the passport to be ready.

Thanks for the info. Hubby here says just to get the passports although I can't see any other travel other than back and forth to Canada.

I have my oath ceremony on the 23rd of this month. After it's over my son (17 1/2) and I will go to the passport office to apply for U.S. passports. Forgive the stupid question but how do they know at the passport office the kid with me has also become a naturalized citizen if he isn't handed a certificate at the oath ceremony?

LOL no, not pregnant. I'm 49 years old.

Anyhoo I decided to try on this skirt with matching top that is a set. It's also dressy. It is made of this kind of stretchy type material and also has the pants to go with it. Well the skirt and top (short sleeved) fit and it looks just fine so I'm happy!

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Worse thing a husband can say, is honey, did you put on a couple of pounds? LOL. Usually say something like, know of this beautiful bike trail or a nice river we can kayak on. Her co-workers are the major culprits, always bringing in good things to eat, well not too bad, she did gain ten but lost three of it. Tell her I am highly claustrophobic. Have this strong fear of being trapped in say an accident and not being able to put myself out of it. Don't have to tell her about her clothes getting too tight. Something bad about America, people like to eat, not only the right foods, but just a tad too much.

Oh yeah he knows I have put on the weight like crazy but he doesn't say anything. I had shed a bunch of pounds before a trip to New Orleans in July but once I got back home started to pig out again due to boredom.

Ok don't laugh but I've gotten too fat to wear any of the nice blouses and skirts that I own to my oath ceremony which is this Thursday afternoon. I do have nice pants, shoes and sweaters however as far as the sweater issue goes it will be in the 60s where I live. Am I now going to be forced to go out and purchase a larger skirt and blouse to wear to this ceremony? blink.gif

Are you pregnant? In our town like yours, all kinds of places to buy these clothes, St. Vincent de Paul, Good Will, Salvation Army, garage sales, neighbors, relatives, friends, in very good like new condition and reasonable, literally, a couple of dollars. Sure you will want to dress so you don't feel conspicuous, and do feel comfortable, can have your photos taken for this big day for you. It means the USCIS no longer rules over your life.

Believed you are concerned about your dress or you wouldn't have asked. 60's is not too hot to wear a sweater, most important thing is you be there. With the current economy, seeing lots of sales going on right now, like 80% off, often wondered about the markup on clothes, several stores in town are going out of business. Seen some women wearing some very old clothes, but were modest and neat, but can't say any were wearing short shorts or hip huggers, didn't see any blue jeans either nor t shirts. Be comfortable.

I'm going to be taking my son in to get his U.S. passport after the oath ceremony on the 23rd. From the time that we apply for his passport until our trip to Canada which is December 17th, there will be almost 8 weeks in between. Do you think it's safe just to get regular service on the passport rather than the expedite? I'm reading turnaround time of 3 weeks. Do I trust it?

Thanks.

Actually what I should have said is that I didn't write my name on the photo, just at the side of the photo itself but on the certificate part. I wrote out my name the same way both on the line of the certificate and at the photo part. Maybe I'm just making a mountain out of molehill but you just never know. I wonder how much of a fuss they will make (if any) by me not writing on the photo.

I think I'm getting withdrawal symptoms from Immigration already...lol.

US Citizenship General DiscussionExperience at the passport office
My son and I attended our local passport office this afternoon. Other than another couple who had already been taken care of, my son and I were the only other ones there. That's how I like it! good.gif

The woman taking care of us took my son's permanent residency card and his long birth certificate to submit with his application. She also looked at his driver's licence.

For my application she took my Citizen Certificate, custody paper for my son (just in case there were any questions) and my marriage licence (showing my maiden name). Don't know why she didn't ask for my long birth certificate. Because I had been married once before she asked me to note the date of marriage to my ex and our divorce date on the application form. She also looked at my driver's licence.

The woman asked when we were planning to travel and I said on December 17th. I asked her if she thought we would need expedite service and she said no, that passports were coming back two to three weeks later. But...one thing that might be iffy is my passport pics. They have some yellowish tinge showing partly on the white background. She couldn't say if that would cause a problem but if it did I would get a call to submit a couple of more photos and not to worry.

After all of that we had to swear that everything written down was true.

I was then asked if I wanted a passport card for each of us. It would be an additional $20 each and comes in handy as a backup for citizenship. My husband had discussed this beforehand and he thought it was a good idea. That would probably be handier to carry around rather than the passport book if we weren't on a trip.

Next step is voting. Oh and I still have to get to the SS office to update with them.

My Naturalization Certificate came back in the same envelope as my passport. Hope yours shows up soon!!!

They put your Certificate in the same envelope as the passport?

Phew I got my Certificate yesterday so I'm relieved.

We received 6 envelopes in total:

1 for his passport card
1 for his passort book
1 for his paperwork
1 for my passport card
1 for my passport book
1 for my paperwork

The woman at the passport office suggested getting the card also saying it's good for backup. My son carries his card in his wallet, I carry mine in my wallet and the books stay at home until we fly. LOL my son thinks the cards look 'cool.' He's 17.

Heading to the SS office on Monday when my son gets out of school.

Next stop is Social Security office to change our status with them.

You can use your proof of UCS at the SS office with your US passport, just bring it in and they will photocopy it, ha, make sure you get it back. When your certificate comes in, can lock that up in a safe place, and may never have to use it again.

Finally, right?

Ok here is my update.

Son came home from school and complained he wasn't feeling well. Ok sounds suspicious.

I decide to take the chance and just went on my own. The woman I dealt with was really nice. I informed her that I wanted to update the status of me and my son in their system to show us as Citizens and to get that certain line removed from the social security cards. I presented both my U.S. passport and my son's. At first the woman asked if I had my Naturalization Certificate and I said, "Oh no. I thought my U.S. passport would have sufficed as evidence of citizenship. She said she would put all the information into the system and see if it would accept without the Certificate. My son did not need to be present. She looked up our previous information from back in 2002, asked me a few security questions like my mother's last name, first name, where I was born, my birthdate where my son was born, etc. She then asked for my driver's licence. After typing in some information intot he computer, she took our old SS cards, said they would be destroyed and our new cards would arrive in about 10 days. Phew!

Hi all,
I just pass my citizenship interview and got oath ceremony same day. The Interview lady was very nice. She went over the N-400 application and and took civics and history test I answer all of them and she took english speaking and writing test. which is very easy she asked me to read and write simple english sentence. anyway I am very happy that I pass the interview and got my naturalization certificate.

My Question is about signing the Naturalization Certificate. Instrustion page says sign in cursive .. no initials and must match as it is printed on the Certificate. My understanding is we have to write name in cursive letter. but it also says signature. I am kinda confused .. is anybody just got naturalized and got US Passport. I went to Post Office to get application and asked the person at the desk he said I have to sign my usual signature. I am just confused. I will be very thankful for all the help.
Thanks

I "wrote" my name out just as it appeared on the certificate. Got the passport no problem. I just got naturalized on October 23rd.

US Citizenship General DiscussionMinor children receiving citizenship

It's exactly the same as the situation if a child is born a US Citizen and later decides he doesn't want to be one. INA 349 lists the ways any US citizen, via birth or naturalization, can renounce US Citizenship. The most straightforward way is to go to a foreign consulate and sign a renunciation paper. Proving you have the required intent can make it harder than it would first seem like it ought to be.

http://travel.state....enship_776.html

I kind of wondered if that would be the case. Thanks.
