ThailandRosetta Stone Parody

Now the govt. is saying they want the video removed from Youtube. I guess remove the video, and the image of the country will get better.

Govt wants YouTube sex spoof removed

The government plans to ask YouTube to remove a video clip mocking the sex industry in Thailand.

The clip is a parody of a commercial for the Rosetta Stone foreign language learning programme. The spoof was produced by popular American late-night television show Saturday Night Live.

In the video, foreigners are interested in learning the Thai language so they know how to say things like, "How much?", "Is that for the whole night?" or "How can I take off your clothes?" in Thai.

(story continues below)

Posted Image Sonthaya Khunploem (Photo by Chanat Katanyu)

Culture Minister Sonthaya Khunploem said on Monday that the Culture Watch Centre is working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an effort to have the video removed from the world's most popular video sharing website.

The government will also inform the United States embassy that the commercial spoof is tarnishing Thailand's image and will ask the embassy to explain the situation to the producer of Saturday Night Live, Mr Sonthaya said.

The parody has drawn many negative responses from both Thai and foreign netizens on YouTube.

Most Thai internet users were not impressed with the video, saying the joke is too harsh and not at all funny.

An internet user posted in Thai, "The Americans behave like this and this is why they're bombing their country."

"Even though it might be true, the producers should not offend Thailand this way," another Thai commented.

As for foreign netizens, some commented that people should not take the spoof too seriously but most were disappointed with it.

I read that this morning too. My wife showed me the spoof on youtube yesterday and I had to explain to her what it was all about. She seemed puzzled that SNL would make of fun of Thailand that way. I told that unfortunately that is the perception in some parts of the world. She thought it make the farang look stupid, I would tend to agree with her on that. We'll be moving back in about 5 years. Will split our time between our hpouse in her village and our condo in Hua Hin. Love the family but will need a break here and there LOL!

Thailandpolice certificate
When my wife went to get her PC last month in Bangkok, they required the NOA2. She also brought the bio page from my passport and the Packet 3 letter just in case, cost 50bht for postage. The first time she went without these documents they said no except for the officer who gave her moblie number and told her he could take care of it.

ThailandCheating German Scammed By Thieving Thai Mistress
Yeah, that might work in Thailand. After Kobe's little indiscretion in Colorado he bought Vanessa a big ole whomping ring to try and gain her forgiveness. The ring came to be known as a "Kobe" and serves as a generic term for an offering made to the wife/s.o. when caught with your pants down. Something that Mr. Fleebrand is no doubt learning about..........

Maybe he'll buy his wife a "Kobe" and all will be forgiven but doubt it. Wonder if she is the only mia noi, doubt that too.

ThailandCalif written driver's test
In Calif you can take the written test in multiple languages. My wife took her written test last week and passed on her first try (thank you!) Anyway, she has test if anyone would like a copy to study from you can PM me. A friend gave her an old one to study off of but only a few on the questions. My wife has all 36 questions with the exception of the sign test (they keep that).

Thailanddoes fiancee need these 4 things with I129f???

My Fiancée has sent over on DHL copies of her
Passport
Thai ID card
Thai house book &
birth certificate With Translation
along with other required documents.
Although I asked her to send all the information, I do not see where they are asking for the 4 items with the I129f.. I guess my mistake. will she need those 4 things later? I am hoping to get this 129f out in todays mail in a few hours...

Thank you for your help in advance. will get a picture up soon. Mike

I know she will need that stuff for the interview for sure. However, we front loaded our 129F pretty heaviliy and included a copy of her passport (all pages), a copy of her BC with translation and a copy of her name change with translation. We typically always gave as much as we could along the way and went from 129 to GC in 12 months. Good luck to you.

Nice, sounds easy. In Thailand is the notice for interview mailed or is it on internet too?

thanks

I believe we got both an e-mail and mailed notice. It was unbelievably fast and I had to scramble to get a flight because I wanted to go with even though I knew I would be waiting outside. Good luck!

Why are you waiting for packet 3? I thought the new process is to go to their website and download it. Maybe someone else can confirm.

Agreed. We had already downloaded it and compiled before we got notice of transfer the the Embassy. As soon as we did, we had ready to go via EMS. Once they sent notice of Packet 3 we sent it the next day and 5 days later received notice of the interview for a week after that!

ThailandAirplane Rides from Asia

We flew EVA. I actually called Orbitz and had a great lady work with me where the one way from BKK to LAX was a lot less than R/T but not half. Also, the Orbitz lady hooked us up with economy deluxe (not available on their website) which was essentially the same size seat as business class (not the pods) so it was just the two of us next to each other from BKK to TPE and TPE to LAX, not a bad way to fly for her first long flight to the U.S. AND, the embassy called her and moved her interview so I had to change the flights home at the last minute and it was only $100.00 each.

Timing wise it's all up to your comfort level. I flew in a week before the interview to spend time with the family. Her interview was on 8/25 (Tuesday). We booked a flight for 9/2 (Sunday). They told her she was approved at the interview. We returned to her village and on 8/31 (Friday) EMS showed up with her passport and the infamous envelope. It was off to BKK and then home. It was a little stressful waiting for EMS to show up. They say you will get the passport in 3-4 days and some have gotten it quicker and others longer. Good luck.

ThailandInterview to Visa

See, that's where my experience has differed. Last time I changed a flight it cost me $500. Each airline charged me 200 and Vayama charged me 100. It was an expensive change. If it was only 100, sure i would book it ahead of time.

We flew EVA. I booked on really short notice because of how quick we got the interview. I actually called Orbitz and booked through them over the phone. I called them when I needed to change and as said, it was only $100.00 per ticket. Plus, I was able to get us in "Deluxe Economy" which isn't available online, essentially cloth covered business class seats, two next to the window instead of three, made for a cozy flight home.

True, it was $100.00 per ticket to change at the last minute. But, it was chance of a lifetime to go to the interview with her (although I couldn't go in) and then fly home with my now wife

provided you don;t get a 221. That is the main reason I won't purchase the flight until after the interview. I would hate to book a flight for a week after the interview and then find out we missed a document

You could always change your flight. I had to due to the Embassy changing the interview from Monday to Tuesday. I moved our flight from Saturday to Sunday at the last minute just be safe. I was pretty confident we had provided more than enough to eliminate a 221g request.

ThailandWe Have Lift-Off

Gardening seems to be a common thread among Thai woman. Last night she was out weeding the garden until 9pm. Today we are buying plants.

My wife's "farm" is really taking off! Although it seems we can never have enough Thai chiles so we bought another plant this weekend. In fact, it seems like we are buying new flowers/plants every couple of weeks. She has also taken to pruning our avocado and orange trees now that they have fruit on them. And this weekend we are going over to her friend's house to get some papaya trees! And gardening early in the morning or late evening seems to be a carry over from Thailand when it is the coolest time of day to do work in the garden!

ThailandFarang Hacked to Death with Machete by Taxi Driver in BangNa

I figured it was a fare dispute. As I said above, sometimes it's just better to pay the extra 50-100 baht. I reckon there are sketchy taxi drivers in every big city in the world. But, Bangkok traffic could certainly make one crazy if they weren't already. A tragedy to be sure but, if this guy lived in Thailand for three years he should have known better than to argue over such a nominal fare and if he threw coffee in the guys face then he certainly did not learn much about Thai culture. But really, who drives around with a machete?

khwaidee1MaleThailand2013-07-08 17:14:00
ThailandFarang Hacked to Death with Machete by Taxi Driver in BangNa

First thing I do when I get in a taxi is look at that meter to see if it's on.  Especially leaving the airport.  I used to travel out of Don Muang almost weekly.  When I'd come home, I'd always go to the top level where they drop people off and get a taxi there, rather than wait in line on the bottom level.  Every now and then I would get in and they'd either ask me where I was going and then quote some outrageous rate like 400THB, or sometimes they wouldn't turn on the meter and I'd ask them to turn it on.  If they didn't, I got out.  I would tell them in Thai the EXACT route I wanted to take everytime I got in a taxi.  If they deviated from that route, I would give them whatever was on the meter and get out and wait on another one.

Yes, very true. We typically have the same taxi pick us up and we've been using him for years. We have a negotiated price to Lopburi and back to BKK or where ever else we may go. And the top level is definitely the place to grab a taxi to BKK. But, this one time we got into the taxi at 1:30 am after a 2 hour layover in Taiwan and I was tired and didn't realize the meter wasn't on until after we were leaving the airport. Since it was late and we were going very close to the airport I thought it best to say nothing and pay the "premium" charge.

khwaidee1MaleThailand2013-07-08 12:21:00
ThailandFarang Hacked to Death with Machete by Taxi Driver in BangNa

Sometimes it's better not to raise the issue of the "taxi meter" not being turned on and pay the extra 50-100 baht. One night we got into BKK late so we had a reservation at a hotel near the airport as we were going to go north in the morning. I noticed that the the meter didn't get turned on and mentioned it to my wife. The driver must have heard meter and looked back at me. I decided to shut up, pay the 300 baht fare as it was almost 2 in the morning and the neighborhoods near the airport are certainly not a place that you would want to get dropped off in in the middle of the night.

Just curious wich one would be easier or people have had a better time at?

ThailandMaking life in America livable

I don't know if you've considered how low the interest rates are but right now you can start building equity in about 3 years with a 15 year mortgage.  Plus, the 15 year mortgage payments workout to be very close to the same payments as the 30 year mortgage payments.

You could also section 8 your home when you were ready to go to Thailand and let the county handle keeping it occupied.  That would cover your payments and bring in a little cash too.  Unless something changes, we'll section 8 ours when we move back and use the monthly check as an income supplement.

We're just going to hire a management company to rent the house and look after it. Depending the level of service they charge 3-10% of the monthly rent. I still have a few years on the mortgage and ton of equity so the rent wil cover the monthly mortgage and give us about 45K baht a month to live on which should help.

We have a Thai friend here in a Dallas suburb.  She basically tore up the entire backyard and turned it into a farm.  It's pretty funny.  She even has chickens back there.

We had to take out a couple of Sego palms and she used most of the available space too. We have some big queen palms in the back as well. She doesn't understand why I would plant such trees that don't give us cocos. She thinks it's odd to plant tress that don't bear fruit. The chickens also came up but I told her in our city we can't have them so she seemed ok with that (oh my neighbors would just love me if we had chickens!) When her Thai friends come over that's the first thing they want to see, after seeing what we are serving!

I've considered buying house just for that reason.  We live in an apartment now and she's always trying to grow stuff on the patio with mixed results. I don't really want invest in a house at this point because I want to go back to Thailand permanently in ~5 years.  I just tell her to stick it out for now.

We have the same plan. We will rent our house here which will give us a healthy income since I'm about 10+ years away from being able to touch my 401K and SocSec (if it's still in existence then!)

ThailandMaking life in America livable

My wife's been here ten months now. She survived the brutally cold Califironia winter. We went through the homesickness, I want to go home initially. But, we found a nearby temple and she has many new Thai friends. I found a Thai language newspaper that comes once a week. She passed her written DMV test and has her driving test on Friday. She will start her ESL classes next month and has been looking for a job. She has mastered all the appliances (the dishwasher is no longer used as a drying rack) although the gas piped into the house still bothers her as she cannot see the tank and is somewhat suspicious of the regulator outside. We have a lot of Vietnamese markets nearby that carry tons of Thai products and have all of the vegetables and fruits that she needs so we only have to go to the Thai market rarely. We went back in February and will go back next month. We have been very blessed and have a wonderful relationship.

Here's my suggestion: a garden. I don't know where your fiancee is from but, my wife's family grew corn and rice. She is truly a farmer's daughter. She loved taking care of our orange and avocado trees during the winter. But, come spring she wanted a garden that she now calls her "farm". It has made her so incredibly happy, I get texts and pics almost every day. We have tons of Thai chiles, basil, dill, brocolli, tomatoes, lemon grass, cucumbers, eggplant, peppers etc. She has also planted heaps of flowers and roses. She now uses stuff from the garden to cook every day and is so happy, it really made a huge difference!

ThailandWhen does home sickness kick in?

Interestingly, The thing she appreciates most is the bum gun. She is loath to use a public toilet. She will hold it until she gets home if at all possible.

I bought every thai kitchen appliance i could lay my hands on. Fully stocked the kitchen with spices, paste, sauce, etc. Bought her a tablet set up in Thai. With apps for Facebook, Skype, and Thai programing. I already had a garden, so she has made it bigger.

Your right about the clothes. She seems to be between a kids XL & teen small.  The kids stuff isn;t wide enough in the hip or bust. The teen stuff is too long in the leg and sleeve.

Yes, at 5'1" and 92 lbs, shopping can be a challenge. However, we've found that Walmart and Target carry a lot of XS so we don't have shop in the kids section. Of course on our next trip home there will be a few days shopping in BKK on the way back!

ThailandWhen does home sickness kick in?

What was it about the Cali winter that created problems. I can;t imagine it gets very cold over there. Although, the temp dropped to about 60 a couple nights ago. She slept in long johns, sweater, and stocking cap and she made me hook up the electric blanket. She is sooo clueless what lies ahead for her come January.

I was being facetious but, it was true for her. We live near the beach so it never gets really cold, maybe some nights in the 50s but, it was cold for her. It gave her reason to go shopping but with daylight savings time and being cold in the morning it didn't help. It was not something to make fun of, she spent 36 years in hot and humid Thailand so it was a transition. That being said, she loves the summer DST and we've have had a nice summer so far. Still hard to go the beach for very long.... she doesn't want to be brown!! LOL!!

khwaidee1MaleThailand2013-07-22 17:35:00
ThailandWhen does home sickness kick in?

Hopefully this will pass. We had a tough first month, similar to what you are going through. As soon as we went to temple and she met some Thai friends things got better. The winter in California didn't help much either. My wife's been here 11 months now and she is doing very well. We have been back twice. She misses the group aspect as well, her father, brothers, and sisters all lived with in a few minutes of our house there and everything was a communal decision/gathering. Her little farm has helped a lot. She didn't pass her first driving test so that bummed her out a lot but she's practicing and will give another go soon. There have been a few bumps along the road but it seems to get better as time goes by...... I don't where you guys are from but, there is a Thai language newspaper put out in So Cal that comes out every Friday. Good source of info and what's going, temples, celebrations, jobs etc.. It's published by the Siam Press I believe. Good luck!

ThailandPattaya...guilty by association?

I asked Jin about this. She interviewed twice, Both times she was surprised how many girls dressed like they worked at a bar. Many left in tears.  She just thought that was the dumbest thing they could have done going to the interview.

I went with my wife to her interview. A few days before we went shopping. She dressed like she worked in office, white blouse, black skirt with matching jacket and flat shoes. I saw a few of the girls go for the interview dressed like they had just come from a club! #######! I never learned their outcome. They showed up holding a loose stack of papers and short dresses and high heels, to each their own I guess!

NEVER LIE!

These guys do this for a living they will pick up on it if you use the P word or not.

I was told, I read, I heard.  I know you mean well Khwaidee1, but we have no idea of the rest of the story. There are many reason a Visa can be denied.

If this is a legitimate and honest relationship, there is no reason Pattaya on it's own should cause a denial. Lets just take this one step at a time. If the OP wants to file for a CR-1, lets give him all the help we can and hope it works out for the best.

Agreed. I was just passing on what someone told us. There are a ton of legitimate jobs in Pattaya I know, we got so worried we were even afraid to mention that we even went there.

ThailandPattaya...guilty by association?

Whether fairly or unfairly, that's gonna raise some suspicion with the embassy.  I guess it depends on where she worked as a waitress.  If she worked at a Chokchai steak place or 13 coins, or something along those lines then probably not.  If she worked as a waitress at a bar that had a silver floor to ceiling dancing pole in it, then there's probably going to be an issue.

I too would defer to Karee. If it was a legit place then I guess it should be no problem. We were just told that the COs look for the P word. But, as slowlyma points out it is a CR-1 which is a lot different that the K-1. The Embassy interview was very perfunctory and we front loaded the hell out of our petition.

khwaidee1MaleThailand2013-07-24 14:37:00
ThailandPattaya...guilty by association?

Hello all,

I am getting ready to start my CR-1 process for my soon to be Thai wife and some of the things I've read on this forum have me concerned.

I have been with my fiancee for 2.5 years now. Many trips within Thailand, trips to Singapore and a cruise through the Pacific together. I am financially secure enough that I can work when I want and support her and her daughter without worry.

YET, She used to be a waitress in Pattaya. Now, I know there will be eye-rolls because no-one is innocent in Pattaya. I am not some love struck moron...I met her in Pattaya as a waitress. I didn't ask...she didn't tell and she hasn't been back there in years. So...my concern is the CO's demenure towards her in a future interview.

Has anyone had a similar experience? Did the CO show compassion in lieu of a long established relationship? Or were they hell bent on trying to get to her to admit she was a working bar-girl?

I am genuinely asking here...please do not get into a discussion of the truth or lie, the regulations and such. She was a waitress and I truly believe her. Hell, I am living with her in Thailand now and she has never given me concern as to her past.

SO...worked in Pattaya...are we screwed from the start? Thank you to all for the help.

I was told that even the mention of Pattaya is not only a red flag but the death knell. I read a post about a guy who's fiance worked for housekeepinng in a small hotel on a Soi that was very quiet. My recollection was that she was denied. We went to Jom Tiem once for a weekend but were told never to use the P word ever as the Embassy will pick up on it right away. We chose not to include the beach pics from Jom Tiem.  Maybe do a search here as to your best course of action. I am just telling you what I was told.

ThailandAnybody have problems with your family excepting your new foreign spouse?

OK.  if'n rlogan was still active this season,

most likely he'd start off with telling you that

you need to sit down with your Parents and have a long talk,

without your lass.

He'd give you all sorts of pointed advice about how to manage the conversation, as well.

IMO, at the moment, you're being reactionary to 'the situation' instead of 'controlling' the situation, but

almost anything can be

negotiated and mitigated via a conversation with your parents.

I agree. You might want to make clear then tension that the situation is causing and how much you love your wife and that you would hope your family would not make you "pick" one over the other.

ThailandAmerican returning to the U.S.A. with nothing..?

Take a walk on the beach after 10:00 pm.  It's like something out of a horror movie or transsexuals gone wrong.  Can't figure out which.  At least that's how it was back in 05.

I haven't and now definitely won't now! We're usually good for a few drinks and some live music if we're going out. The only time we've been down to beach at night was one New Years to launch our sky lantern and it was sort of a family affair. Of course then it was back to the bar to welcome in the New Year.

ThailandAmerican returning to the U.S.A. with nothing..?

I can't think of too many places I've been worse than Pattaya.  I absolutely hate that place.  They need to launch an airstrike from U-Tapao and level that city.

Funny you say that, I've thought a few times as well. We used to do beach runs to get away from the family and would stay in Jom Tiem which is not much better. Then years ago discovered Hua Hin which is about the same drive from wife's village. I love that place and nice beaches which Pattaya definitely does not have.

Interesting. I'll have the wife read it later. We'll be visiting the family over the holidays and since things don't look like they'll be settling down anytime soon, I want to make sure what "suspended to stay in the Kingdom." means.

My sense is that it is telling visitors if you participate in the protest you're going to jail. I saw similar signs up in 2010.

ThailandPictures! Pictures! Pictures!

From our experience the photos played a big part too. We front loaded our application with about 12 photos. When the CO came out he had  the photos on top of the stack and started off the interview asking who, where, when, etc. We also had a nice little photo album as well that he went through. The CO then moved on to perfunctory, where did you meet, what's your fiance do etc.

ThailandDoes my wife need a visa to travel to Mexico?

Found the answer, I think. It looks like she does and it looks like a pain to get it for just a weekend.

Tourist visas
If applying for a Tourist Visa you will need to submit the following documentation:
? Passport with minimum of 6 months? validity.
? Application form.
? 1 passport-size photo.
? Original return ticket.
? Fee (payable in cash only).
? Proof of sufficient funds (US$50 per day) to cover length of stay.
? Postal applications must be accompanied by a covering letter specifying the purpose of the trip and the dates of entry and departure. Applications should be made in a stamped, self-addressed envelope with recorded or registered delivery.

Time required to issue a visa:

Average 2 days; up to 3 weeks, depending on nationality.

What is the cost of a visa?
Varies, depending on nationality:
Approx. US$17 ? $30

You should post this in the open forum. Not related to Thailand.  You'll get more answers there.

Well given that my wife is Thai, travelling on a Thai passport, I thought maybe someone in the Thai subforum might have had experience with this. It is kind of country specific. I think I found the answer anyway. Sorry.
