I made 2 copies of everything - keeping the originals in my file to take to the interview and another copy for back-up just in case.

Sorry, hopefully this will be the last question. I was getting all of the paperwork together to send off and came across something that I'm not sure about.

It says we need and original or court-certified copy of the complete arrest record and disposition. On the page, it is stamped 'certified to be a true copy of the original.' Can I just make a copy of that or do I have to actually send that one in? And if I have to send that in, will I get it back?

I am a US Citizen, my husband a Canadian citizen. He became a permanent resident (has his PR card) of the US almost 3 years ago (3 years in June.) We thought we would just leave it like that. I had heard that in order to become a US citizen, he would have to give up his Canadian citizenship. But he has been out of work for 6 months now and we are running into issues with that. Because of his line of work, he *can* work at the shipyards, but none of them will hire him because he isn't a US citizen. They pay good and he's had lots of calls. But once they find out, they tell him they can't hire him because of that.

So, that got us to looking more into him becoming a US citizen. But we still have questions and I knew that VJ was the place to come. You all helped us out SOOOO much when we were going through the whole immigration process and I'm hoping I can find the answers we need.

1. I've read different things...If he becomes a US citizen, will he have to give up his Canadian citizenship? I read that he would have to renounce it to the US but not to Canada. If that is true, what exactly does that mean and what would have to to really do/say to the US? Does he have to get a US passport?

2. If he can still keep his Canadian citizenship, does that mean he can still come and go between the 2 countries as he would like, without hassle? Would he have to give up his Canadian passport?

3. What paperwork do we need to fill out? And how long does the process take? Do we have to wait until the 3 years or can we start the process now? Are their interviews and is the process as involved (or more) as the immigration process was? (Just trying to get an idea of what we're looking at.)

4. How much does it cost?

My husband has his interview coming up. I know that I am not required to go with him, but would like to. My question is, can we take all 3 of our kids (ages 4, 5, 6) in with us? I know that we won't be going back to the interview with him and would have to wait. Have other people taken their spouse and kids with them? Or is it best if we just not go? We will still make the trip with him (it's about 3 hours from us) but if it's better that we not go in, I can always find something to do with the kids.

I must have been reading it wrong! :( I looked into getting the transcripts but thought it was a huge cost for it so I didn't do it. His interview is in 2 days so now there isn't even enough time to mail it. I called Office Max about having it faxed in but it will cost $22! He has been out of work for 9 months, support 5 people, so we really need to try to do it cheaper. But don't know if we'll have a choice.

Will they not take the one I have, with preview written on it?

I know that I need to bring a transcript of copies of my last 3 years tax returns to the interview (he has it this Wednesday!) I have 2 hard copies already because we had them professionally done. The 3rd (last year's) we did ourselves with turbo tax and I thought I could pull it up. But now I can't seem to find it. The only thing I can find is a copy but across all the pages, it says 'PREVIEW ONLY' across the top, middle and bottom of the pages. You can still read everything that is on the page, but I'm worried they won't take this. Will it be ok? I don't know what else to do if it isn't :unsure:

Hmmm, I wasn't able to edit my post to add in our experience. Oh well, here it is:)...


It was great! It was about a 4 hour drive and a lot of waiting when we got there, but the ceremony went well. It was part of that town's annual 4th of July Celebration and it was all very patriotic! We sang patriotic songs, cannons were shot off, and they had red, white and blue water sprayed from a tugboat in the water right behind us. Afterward they had a reception for all of the new US Citizens (155 in all!) and had a buffet table full of food. Everyone was so nice and welcoming. It really was a great experience and one we won't forget! So glad we're done though!!:)

Congratulations daisylynn! my field office is Norfolk as well, i am a June flier though, so i have a couple of months to go. Do you know your your DH will have is ceremony? Is it here in Norfolk or in Richmond? Thanks


Thanks! Actually my office is in Raleigh/Durham. I thought it was Norfolk because that is where he had his fingerprints done and hadn't checked into it at that point. But our interview/appt. was in Durham. I just keep forgetting to change my profile to reflect that :duh:

His ceremony is July 3rd.

I just checked dh's oath ceremony info out. It is being held in Southport NC on July 3rd. When I looked up the info, it's during their 4th of July celebration and is actually an annual event held during their 4th of July weekend festivities. What an awesome way to celebrate his citizenship!

We also got a yellow letter reminding us to bring proof.

DH has his interview today and he passed! The interview was for 8:45. We got there around 8:30 and went it (with all 3 kids). They sent us to the waiting room where we waiting maybe 10-15 minutes before they called his number. He went back and was gone maybe 20 minutes. He came back out and said that he had passed and that he was suppose to wait until another guy brought him his oath ceremony letter. We waiting another 15-20 minutes and then they called him back up, where the guy handed him his letter for the Oath ceremony and instructions. We were out of there before 10am.

His oath ceremony is on July 3rd. We were hoping to get it a little sooner than that but we are just happy that we finally have a date! Today's appt. was a 2.5 hr. drive. The drive to the oath ceremony is 4.5 hrs :( Ah well, at least we're almost there! :)

Daisy16 and Jemmi...Did your interview letter say that your oath ceremony would be the same day? Or do they just spring that on you the day of? Just curious because my husband's interview is June 15 and was wondering if his oath would be the same day or not. Is there anyway to find out?

Also, not that it matters now, but for those of you who did early walk-ins for fingerprints...could anyone do that at any place? My husband went in on his appointment date but I'm wondering if he could have walked in earlier?

It's too late now since my husband has already had his fingerprints done, but I'm just curious. I see people saying they did early walk in for fingerprints. Is that at any location and for anyone? What did you do, just walk way ahead of your appointment time and be seen? Do they take anyone like that? I wish I had known before. We would have done that.

Had to make a change. He had fingerprints done in Norfolk, Va so I was assuming that was the field office? But his interview is in Durham, NC, so now I'm guessing that's it. I went in and changed it.

I'm glad I came across this. I have just started today with filling out the N-400 and wasn't even thinking of speeding citations! DH got one so I will definitely put that up there. But exactly what proof/documentation do we need? And does he just take that with him to the interview?

Ok, now I'm super confused. We got the requisition for the lab work. They asked which ones he needed to be tested for, so I told her measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus and diphtheria. She said they don't test for tet/dip but they do the rest. So, he got the blood work for those other 3. He is scheduled to have a tetanus shot next week.

Is there ANY thing else he should have had titre testing for? Or, is there ANY thing else the doctor needed to do. Someone mentioned Syphilis and HIV. Does he need to be tested for these?

As of right now, we will just have the results from the titer testing for MMR and then the tetanus/dip shot. ANYTHING else?? I want to make sure we get this right and don't forget anything.

So, we got the referral to get the titre testing done. They don't test for tetanus and diptheria? He has to get that shot now.

Also, what is it you need from the doctor's office if they have to get shots? Do they need to write something out to take to the medical exam or what? And when they get testing done, do we just use the results form to take to the medical?

Ok, so someone on that link isted these:

- mumps

-- rubella
-- polio
-- tetanus and diphtheria toxoids
-- pertussis
-- influenzae type b (Hib)
-- hepatitis B
-- varicella
-- pneumococcal and
-- influenza.


But those aren't for his age group, am I right? For his age, he only needs these:

-- varicella

Is that right or am I totally reading something wrong?

And I can just go to our doctor or to a walking to get the titers testing done? Can they test for all of these? (except varicella?)

I have been trying to call the number to get the transcripts but can't get through. For a couple of days, there was just a clicking sound. Today it rang, but noone answered. I know I've tried to call the IRS before from here and the number that I had said I couldn't call it from this area. So, maybe I have the wrong number? Anyone else have problems getting through? What number are you using?
