Middle East and North AfricaMENA Ladies! Q&A time!
I'll answer in my own words since none of those really apply.
I have an ex husband. It ended bitterly but I'm happy to finally be rid of him. We don't talk even though we have kids together because he can't manage to make a simple phone call without cursing and acting like a donkey so he's banned from calling my home or cell phone. I do pay for my son to have his own cell phone solely for the purpose of his dad calling him and his sister but he doesn't bother, I assume because I'm not answering it so he can't further complicate my life, therefor it's not worth the effort for him.
My husband (current) has met my ex and threatend to cut his ears off if he EVER calls me any name other than my name in the future. Other than that my husband was very polite to him. He hasn't bothered to come back. star_smile.gif
My ex can't possibly feel superior to my husband because they are both foreigners and my husband learned how to read, write and speak English much more before he came here than my ex ever did in the 20 years he's been here.

Middle East and North AfricaDogs and Islam
There are several ahadith that say it's not allowed to keep a dog as a pet for other than hunting, herding or protection (and even then it's not allowed to sleep in the house where the ppl sleep); the dog's saliva is impure and anything it comes in contact with must be washed 7 times (and in another hadith, an eighth time with dirt) to be pure again; it's not allowed to buy or sell dogs (or cats) and angels don't enter a home with a dog (or pictures on display).

I can't help but laugh each time I see anyone mention the pineapple club here so now I'll have to explain....
In Charleston, SC you can find many pineapple fence posts like this (and other structures) and while taking a carriage tour around the historic district there a few years ago, I got to hear the story of how the pineapple fence posts came to be popular there.....
When the men went away to war and left the women home, the women took lovers until their husbands returned.... when their husband returned, a woman would put a pineapple on her fence post as a signal to her lovers not to come-a-knockin' because her hubby was there!! laughing.gif
I HOPE that's not why you ladies chose this name laughing.gif blush.gif

soooo ummmmm I am not sure I understand where the "covering the hair" is in that verse.. don't get upset with me..please honest question. I wear the hijab and happy in it.. but wondering to support a case I am fighting.

The hair wasn't specifically mentioned because they were already covering their hair. Have you ever seen one of the pics of Mary that the christians have? Notice how she was wearing her "hijab"? How it covers the head and then is pulled back behind her shoulders? That's how women used to wear their veils when this verse was revealed so they were already covering their heads/hair.... Allah subhanallahu wa ta'ala then told us to pull the veils/khimars, that we were already wearing, around to cover our bosom.

One question: where does it say in the Koran that women are obliged to wear a hijab?

An-Nur 24:31
Depends on how one understands it but there are other other sources of reference that elaborate on it. It also helps to have an understanding of how women in that time were already wearing their veils.

Well, actually, no verse in the Quran mentions hijab as a means of dress. 24:31 mentions covering your bosom with a khimar, a cloth that both men and women wore, but it doesnt use the word hijab to refer to a method of dress for women. Also, everyone wore veils, Muslims, pagans, Christians, Jews. It's a hot and arid climate and they didnt have hats. Head covering predates monotheism in the ME.

Well, no one asked if "hijab" is the proper name for the method of dress but only if what he understands as hijab is ordered in the Quran or not.
Yes, both men and women wear khimars over their heads but it was the women specifically who were addressed in this verse. Women used to wear their veils over their heads but with the ends slung back behind their heads/shoulders. This verse specifically tells them to draw their veils (which are already on their heads) over their bosoms. It seems clear to me and others and this is the majority opinion (which doesn't always make it right I know). I know you and others don't agree but this is how those of us who wear "hijab" understand it and why we wear what we wear.

The rules may have changed, but last time I checked you can only legally possess (without a hyphen which would count as a compound name) 3 names in the USA. That's why forms, SS, etc all make you pick 3.

I have four legal names (none of which belong to my husband or his family) and all four are on my SS card and DL.

I would think telling your husband you don't trust him enough to share your money is a little controlling isn't it? If a husband told his wife she can't be on any of his accounts and he doesn't trust her with money everyone would be screaming how bad he is.

Finances are one of the leading causes of divorce, I think the better choice would be to teach him about being financially responsible and going to a financial planner would be a great idea. Keeping everything seperate to me is just telling him that you don't trust him and your money is yours, not his.

Something to consider might be for him to be a stay at home dad if he can't make as much as you can or enough to justify him working and the cost of day care, his gas, a second car, insurance, etc. If he were to do this you need to think about if the situation were reversed how would you want to be treated as a stay at home mom?

a lot of posters on this particular forum are muslim and finances of married couples are often approached differently than what you, not being muslim, might be used to.

Not only that, there are many people that don't care to co-mingle finances regardless of visa status. I have several co-workers that don't co-mingle. The only drawback here is that co-mingling is often used as proof when you are applying to adjust status.

Yep, that's why we have the joint acct we use for bills. good.gif

We have a joint acct that we use for our joint bills but we also both have our own separate accts that we use for our personal money. Of course I spend my money on him and he spends his money on me and my kids so it's all good! biggrin.gif
I had a car before we got married and I've tried to get him to let me put his name on the title but he refuses. He also saved some money and bought me a van and he didn't want his name on that title but I insisted both our names be there. I think, because we've had some issues from other ppl trying to plant doubts in my mind that he's using me for a GC, that he's really trying to overcompensate to prove that he's really not. :sigh: I really want us to share everything but have no problems with us keeping some things separate as well.
I hope we're not going to ever be at a point where what's mine is mine and what's yours is yours because I don't plan on working anymore unless we need me to...... smile.gif

I can't imagine any of you guys converting to Islam if you weren't married to someone from MENA so to say that you are doing it for 'yourselves' is probably not entirely honest. Had someone converted to Islam and then found a MENA husband then that's a diff kettle of fish entirely.

Not that it matters one way or another of course, but I would bear that in mind if I was trying to be really honest with myself about the reasons I changed my religious beliefs.

Not all of us were married/engaged to MENA men when we converted..... I've known both men and women who've converted to Islam while being married to a christian smile.gif
As for those who converted to Islam after marrying a muslim man, maybe she saw that he has a good character and high morals because of his religion (something that's hard to find in anyone in the west) and that turned her on to the religion smile.gif

Who converts their religion for another person? If that were true it wouldn't be anything more than an act to show for the other person. I have only met one person in my life who converted their religion to marry someone.... she was Budhist and he was catholic and the priest wouldn't marry them if she didn't convert (on paper even lol) and go to classes before the wedding. She still lights incense in front of the lil Budha in her shop (and so does her catholic hubby and he even refills the food and tea rofl.gif )
I mean no offense to you personally but I get so tired of everyone assuming when a woman converts to Islam that it MUST be because she's trying to please her husband (or to find one) rolleyes.gif

Mornin folks. My head still hurts from last night. Maybe its the hurricaine thats on its way here thats causing pressure changes that is making my head hurt?? grrr I wanna go back to bed OR get a good cup o coffee.

I had such a good time with Noura/her hubby , MBP/ her hubby , VP/ her hubby this weekend!!! I laughed till I about cried..and then laughed some more. Thanks girls for a great weekend!!!!

Ditto here........ we got home super late and passed out! Good times, good times! Amal & MBP are the hostesses w/ the mostesses and VP is a charming and entertaining lady! And so glad our guys got to meet too!
Like Amal pointed out - it's b/c of the guys that the girls met, but b/c the girls met, the guys got to meet too! kicking.gif

Don't be spoiling my VJ reputation now!!! devil.gif
