my couch to 5k went like this..

read in vj about doing couch to 5k...talked to a friend about how I'd like to start the couch to 5k. thought about how hot it was outside, took a puff off of the hookah, thought about the clothes required and needing to buy a stopwatch, another puff off of the hookah. Considered just doing 30 minutes of walking, got winded, took puff off of hookah and am now replying to Sundays thread.

woooh what a workout!

The bathroom in our apt in egypt was a normal bathroom but we got the same tiny hot water heater as you and I NEVER had a proper shower the entire three weeks I was there. Also, even though it was a normal bathtub/shower, it apparently wasn't all that important for them to have a full shower curtain so it only came about half way over and half way down and everything would get soaked in there when we'd shower. We learned to just leave our stuff outside of the door lol.

At my hubby's home in Libya, he just redid his bathroom before coming here. It's still the traditional all in one room with the Arab toilet and shower together and completely tiled in a gorgeous green tile but he updated it by adding an American style toilet beside the Arab toilet. I understand no one has used the American toilet to this day whistling.gif
I have used the Arab toilet once in my life, here in the US! Because I went to a masjid in LA and that was all they had that worked that day unsure.gif I didn't care for it but managed without falling in lol
I don't know how anyone uses tissue paper with a bidet as I've found that just makes a nasty mess so I don't even bother buying TP anymore. My hubby installed spray hoses on both toilets when he got here and we use water. My mom brings a roll with her when she visits laughing.gif

I just double checked on the I-129F form on the USCIS website now to make sure I wasn't going crazy or did extra work for no reason and this is what it says in the instructions:
QUOTE
Translations. Any document containing foreign language submitted to the Service shall be accompanied by a full English language translation which the translator has certified as complete and accurate, and by the translator's certification that he or she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English.
http://www.uscis.gov...I-129Finstr.pdf
It said that on the Adj of Status form as well. I remember for sure we had to have his birth certificate with the certified translation when we file to adjust status and there were some other documents he had to have on his end before coming here, all had to be translated by a certified translator, otherwise, we would have translated them ourselves since he's fluent in English.

As long as the person translating the document puts the statement on it that is required "I certify that I am fluent in english and arabic and competent to translate this document" that is all that is required. The part you quoted does not say it has to be a different person or a company or anything at all like that. My best friend's husband brought a lousy translation for one of his documents to the INS here and they said, "can't you just translate it?" and he did right there on the spot and just wrote the required paragraph. There isn't a "certifying body" for translators for the USCIS (like the list of doctors). If you want me to find the EXACT wording we used, I can dig up the documents. But we had no problem at all after we did it ourselves...all our problems were from the one done by the "professional" translator who decided to leave out things he thought weren't important... GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

OMG I didn't know that!!! We wasted a lot of effort then!!! sad.gif

No, not in our experience and it's much more expensive to get anything tranlsated in the states. One company was going to charge us about $300 to translate a freaking drivers license! wacko.gif

I know it's more expensive here... but there was no requirement for a "professional translation" for anything in the I-129 process, so I'm wondering if some other process requires an "external" translation of documents.

Who wanted the driver's license translated? Who required a translation done by a someone else?

H will be getting his international license this week in Alexandria... and hopefully it will be in English..

K

Everything we got for USCIS from the beginning of the process until now required translation from "certified" tranlsators and the translators from both Egypt and Libya had to stamp everything we sent in. I'm not sure why you didn't have to do the same.
The DMV in SC didn't want to give my hubby a DL without a translation of his DL from Libya and they wouldn't accept his international DL for that purpose. They wanted him to have a learners permit for 6 months. We ended up just waiting until we moved to NC and went and got his DL with no issues.

Esalaamu Aleikoum,

This is a good thread! I think it really depends on what area you are living ... if there are Arab shoppes around ... plus what your SO needs.

Gifts for you, of course!

I think any family related memoribilia is important.

Any and all of their documents (even ones not required by INS) school records, chahada certs, etc.

Books they would need.

Islamic clothing if they wear it. Too expensive in the US. And o ye, any other higher prices clothing like coats. You will spend enough in the first year!

Enough money to get throu their travel (at least)

Any PC related items like removable disks, laptops, and important software.

Interesting home decorations, that will bring little feel of their country to their new home

Cooking items, harder/expensive to find in the US like couscousier

Everything else can pretty much find here ... More items you wold bring to their country I think!

I would not advise bringing cigs, since thou they are cheaper in MENA! Many times, they get stolen by the local customs. Happened to me several times (and no, I donnot smoke). Also items like Qat or hookah ... not something you want the drug dogs to sniff out. I have seen too many times in the Detroit airport Yemenis trying to bring in Qat! DEE Dee dee!

You're right Henia. My hubby also brought pictures, his traditional clothes, certificates from work/training, letters of recommendation, birth certificates, police report, high school transcripts (all with the certified english tranlsation) and other important documents he would need here. I don't know about other countries but it takes like a month at least to get anything in the mail from Libya so we really didn't want to be stuck when it came time to get the GC.
But the most important thing he brought, aside from himself! was my stuff tongue.gif (jk) not really lol

My hubby brought Arabic books, clothes, shoes he liked, his coat, a lot of underwear since the kind here is different, which all fit in half of one of the suitcases he brought. I see. The mixing of the the hosts blood during the gestation period is the issue. To this the medical professional would reply that surrogate mothers are screened throughly before beginning any such process to insure the complete babies health. Once born the blood and or the genetic material of the surrogate mother does not affect the child.

Right, but the issue is with the fact that the blood mixes in the gestational period..... that's probably what the shaykh will argue smile.gif

Alhamdulilah - People get divorced yes I'm not talking about that. Just think about your own kids if you have them. Look through their viewpoint in life of their father. It's not her responsibility to take care of his kids but she is honestly concerned.

The situation make sense now though since he doesn't get to see them alot anyways while he IS there. I can see why it's easy to leave then.

I do have children and their father nevers sees them, calls them or offers any help in supporting them so I do know how that feels. I also know what it's like to have divorced parents and not to see one's father because of living with my mom..... but I wouldn't think it was fair to say that my dad was bad or couldn't be happy again with another woman because he didn't live with my mom anymore. My hubby doesn't have children so I can't really answer for him but my kids are the only reason he's here instead of me going there. I have to wait until they're old enough to come with me before I can move overseas and then they can either come with me or stay here and visit when they can. It'll be hard if they choose not to come with me but I feel like they will probably follow me since they are both pretty fascinated at the idea of traveling abroad, even now at this young age.

Stand up for yourself and say, "This is my house, I am an American, things are different here, I get to do and say what I want pretty much and I'm not going to have my freedoms impeded on, I'm going to share my life with you and that doesn't mean you get control what I do or what I say because I can't live like that."

QUOTE (Olivia*)
You most certainly did in the first place. But as we've learned it's not uncommon for mena males and females not to take responsibility for anything they did.

I see, me observing that some people were looking for trouble when there wasn't any was egg slinging.

Why am I not surprised by your comment about MENA people and your attitude?

I'll let you think about that one yourself.

I was born, raised, educated, and continue to live in the U.S. My household was more American and Christian influenced than Iranian and Muslim influenced because my parents moved here as teenagers. If anything, my behavior is more indicative of my American upbringing than my Iranian heritage. Imagine that. I'm just as American as you are, sister, but without the arrogance.

First , you are very arrogant yourself. Second, stop insulting the people of this country and our personalities. I have met tons of Iranians here and they suffer from many of the same things Americans that are native to this country suffer from. Materialism, greed, cultural differences between parents and kids etc.

Sunni Islam and its practicioners practice a very very different islam from Shia ( Iranians) Your religion allows muta, marriage for one hour or one day or one week. The culture can be very different from some of our mena husbands( Iranian culture) I will tell you right now, You being being Iranian doesn't mean a damn thing to me as far as credibility or me listening to you or you telling me "how mena culture is or isnt" You are not even from the same ethnicity or religion or lifestyle as my husband . How you could come on here proclaiming any kind of expertise in MENA or arabs is beyond me because Farsi has no relationship with arabic and sunni islam has ABSOLUTELY no similarity with Shia in lifestyle, marriage or practice. If someone in Iran wants to marry, they can marry for 2 weeks and its completely ok.

Sunnis are alot more restricted in their lifestyle. If I was married to someone who could marry a hooker 3 blocks away, not tell me about it and then divorce her and then get another and then marry again and again all LEGALLY IN shia islam, I sure wouldnt worry about infidelity.

( this is ABSOLUTELY NOT A DIG TO THE SISTERS MARRIED TO IRANIANS HERE>.. Its to make a point to this nitwit. You dont see any of the women married to Iranians trying to tell me about the lifestyle or culture of my husband because they know there are huge differences..... Iranian men can muta and legally and easily. Sunni men are bound by a heck of alot of laws that makes swapping out chicks pretty easy and legally.

I just find you to be on here to show everyone YOUR ARROGANCE,,, not to provide support and care for the rest of us..

And frankly I need it from my friends here..

The prophet sal allahu alayhi wa salaam allowed muta marriages in his lifetime and it was only after his death that it was disallowed by the sahaba so I don't appreciate you taking a dig at this practice. I may not believe it's allowed today but I also don't go around bashing practices that the prophet sal allahu alayhi wa salaam himself allowed. Also, when a sunni man marries a woman, he's under no obligation to remain married to her for any amount of time and is free to divorce and remarry as many times as he pleases in his lifetime. As long as the contract doesn't state that it's for a temporary time then he's done nothing wrong.
Furthermore, shi'ism is a religion and one that other muslims on this board (not just Iranians) practice, whether you, I or others agree with it or not and in the same way that it's distasteful, disrespectful and rude to post links to faithfreedom.org or other hateful sites that attack Islam and muslims or to post attacks against other religious groups, this post is no different.

Yes I'm reviving an old thread but I just wanted to let everyone know.... in case anyone else is as concerned as I am that this site rapleaf, gives out your REAL name when someone searches for your email if you use it on any of your sites like multiply, facebook or myspace (even if you have your info private on those sites!!)..... you can search for your own email address and then "claim this profile" and mark all that info private. Then when someone else searches for your email address it won't tell them any other site that your on, your age, your name or your location. smile.gif
