CanadaNo longer doing medical exams in Calgary?
I believe I read that Montreal results are available in 48 hours. So that would be at least two additional nights stay in Montreal in a hotel. I guess one could make a holiday out of the interview, if the weather is good, but Montreal in the winter yuck. Snow, ice and cold. Come to Vancouver we hardly ever get snow just buckets of rain.
Good luck on your journey!

Janet

As a side note, back in '89 when my sister immigrated back to the USA with my fatehr as the sponser - everything was completed in Calgary (family green card, medical, etc). So slowly over the years they have been downsizing what the consulates do.

CanadaAdditional Information for application after it is sent
I posted this in the CR-1 forum but had no answers. If you have additional information for your application, such as my Social Sercurity Number in my case. Do I sent a letter to Laguna Nigel, or just wait until the interview? This was my orginal post for clarification.

"I am wondering if anyone knows if I should send this information in, and if so where in California do I send it to - Laguna Nigel?
When I lived in the states as a teenager, I received my social secuity card. I knew that you are only one number for life. Today we went to the local Social Security office, and explained that my husband would be needing my number for when he files his taxes. The woman behind the counter typed in some information, checked my Canadian passport and BC Driver's liscence and wrote my number down and handed it to me. She was also going to change it to my married name, until she realized I was not an American citizen and had no visa stamp in my passport.
When we filled out my application in August we didn't have my SSN, as I thought it would be hard to get until I legal proof that I was intitled to re-obtain it; and I had long ago lost the original card, so now I am wondering if I should send a letter with my SSN so they can add that information to my CR-1 application. It might result in a touch."

Thanks,

Janet

CanadaOrdering a gift from the USA and having it delivered to Canada...
I went to the Zeller/Bay website and ordered my family's gifts. I had to spend 100.00 to get free shipping. It arrived in less than a week in BC. It looks like you can use a Visa or Mastercard. I still have my Bay card. Free shipping until the end of November.

Good luck,
Janet

CanadaMarried in Canada...now in U.S...next steps...
Welcome,
I can only tell you what we have done. Got married in the USA, I am staying for 176 days, filed for Spousal Visa CR-1 while I am here. Returning to Canada to wait for visa - January 3, 2009. After waiting 7 years, I am not willing to risk any delay or possible ban on entering the USA. I contact brsdcanada here at VJ, and he offered sound advise regarding staying in USA and adjusting status.

Janet

The sooner he files the sooner you can come legally, and yes the CR-1 is the better visa - except for the trip to Montreal to attend the interview.

Good luck in your journey to be with your loved one.

CanadaDo I need a new passport in my married name?
"Will I need to get a new passport in my married name before the actual interview? Or can they approve the visa in my passport with my maiden name it, my maiden name passport still has 4 years left before it expires."

Thanks Trailmix for your reply in the other forum. When we completed the paperwork for the the I-130 we used my married name.
I will be changing things over to my married name once I return to Canada, but I have an international trip coming up and the tickets are already purchased in my maiden name. It will be awhile until the immigration process is completed, I am hoping it will not be as long as Feb-July 2010 (I was hoping to miss the whole 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, amongst other things.) So I was curious as to when I have/need to change my passport.

Thanks,
Janet

I have empathy for their children. With all the news about illegal aliens and those out of staus that appear almost daily on the news within the USA, both him and his wife were stuck with their heads in the sand regarding his status in the States.

CanadaCanadian Cell Phone Contracts
My daughter was PAID to take over the contract and cell phone when a young couple moved to the USA. We found the phone on craigslist and they paid her 100.00 to take it over. We all meet a the Bell koisk at the downtown mall and they were able to exchange the phone, change the contract over to my daughter. One advantage for the couple was they didn't have to pay out the excessively high cancellation fee, and also since the the number remained the same as the couple that moved. My daughter was able to tell people that called that the couple had moved to the USA.
For myself as soon as I knew there was a possiblity that I would be moving to the USA, (1.5 years ago) when my phone died I just bought my phone and chose the plan I wanted. That way I have no contract to cancel when I go. I just own the phone outright.

CanadaMy Christmas present to all you wonderful people!
Merry Christmas!

Thank you all for being my coffee buddy's each morning for over 3 years. I have jumped around from forum to forum while we awaited the opportunity to petition for me to come to the USA. However, each day someone wrote something somewhere on this site that showed that there is a light at the end of this journey. Please browse through this virtual cook book over the holidays and perhaps pick up a new family favourite.

All the best for 2009

I return to Vancouver on January 3rd, after I get back I will talk to some people about the new train from the airport. I guess from you post it is up and running. It wasn't when I left in July. I won't forget your question and will get an answer for you as quick as I can. The transit system in Vancouver (the lower mainland) is excellent, so not to worry smile.gif

CanadaBrining a turkey?
Well, thanks for your help with the turkey situation. I thought I would give you an update. I bought two 15 pound turkeys and defrosted them. I bought the huge zip lock bags. On the stove I boiled veggie broth, apple juice, 8 cloves of garlic, 2 tbsps pepper corns, 1 tbsp savory, 1 tbsp, rubbed sage, 1/2 cup whorestershire(sp?) sauce and 1 cup sea salt. I washed the birdies real good inside and out. Fried up the inards for hubby's breakfast yuck, boiled the necks in a pan of water for the gravy. I brined the turkeys for 24 hours on the bottom shelf in the fridge ion the zip lock bag (2 turkeys fit in one bag). Washed them of and patted them dry - put celery sticks and onions chunks in the cavity and put them in cooking bags in the oven for 2 hours. WOW!!! The meat was so moist, I let them rest for 30 minutes and then I carved them and put the meat in a rectangular hot water type chafing dish to stay warm. This has to be the best turkey I have ever made. I may tweek the brine in the future, but you definitely do not need to salt the gravy! The meat was not salty at all.

Thanks for your help and if you haven't tried this method it is well worth the extra effort

Then I just read it again now after reading trailmixes answer I finally got it.

CanadaBrining a turkey?
Does anyone have any experience/recipes to do with brining their holiday turkey? We are having the extended family (45 people) in, and we are doing the turkey and ham. I already know that I will be getting a spiral ham, and I am wonder if all the fuss about brining a turkey is hype, or the next best thing since sliced bread.

Thanks for your input.

CanadaClarification on options
the K1 is good for a period of around 6 months from when it is issued - that means you have 6 months to enter the USA and then 90 days - not three months in which to get married.

Janet
carsloFemaleCanada2009-01-03 13:33:00
CanadaClarification on options
The cheapest route is a spousal visa CR-1 only about 845.00 compared to almost 1500.00 for the K3. It takes about a year for the CR-1, could you elope, come back and then file the CR-1 and have a larger wedding when your visa comes through. Since you are in Ontario, Montreal is not far and that is where they do CR-1s and also the K1 and K3.
Just don't tell them you are going to get married when you go down if you chose to elope - they may not let you in. We chose not to adjust status in USA, as I would never take the chance of a ban if they thought aything was fishy - which it is not, but one never knows with immigration. You can't work while adjusting staus also. Your wife/fiance will likely need a co-sponsor if she is a student also.
Just an idea.

Good luck on what ever you decide.

CanadaNow what
I feel lost, I believe I put all my energies into submitting the original petition in correctly that I never really paid any attention to the rest of the process. I have a question and I can't seem to find the answer.
After NOA2 approval notice, the petition is shipped off to NH. I know I need to appoint my husband as the one to receive all further information, and that I need to have a number to put on the form and to pay the money. Will they send me the number in Canada? Or does Carnell need to try and call to find out the number and pay on line? Or does Carnell get the mail in the USA?
I know that once the agent is assigned, Carnell will get the financial commitment part of the process to complete, along with some other stuff from me and more money and then it goes to Montreal. We are hoping that we can finish the process by the end of the school year - June 30th.
I am going to try and put this out of my mind as I go winter camping with Girl Guides - we usually don't have so much snow here in the Vancouver area of BC so it should be fun. So I am not ignoring responses I am just out camping smile.gif
