CanadaMoving items via UPack
See my review - I scanned and emailed my Visa to them I came on a CR-1 and had to wait until I had crossed the border.

http://www.visajourn...ing-to-the-usa/

Good luck,

Janet

Hello All,

Moving question for those who have used Upack or those in the know.

I am thinking about using Upack for move from Ottawa to California. Of course I need my successful K1 interview first before I can move the stuff. What I am wondering is as soon as I actually receive the K1 visa in my passport from the consulate, can I send my stuff via upack? Or does Upack/customs need the I-94 or other documents I receive when I actually activate my K1 at the border? Posted Image Posted Image

Thanks!

I don't know if anyone has to oreder anything online from Joann's. Well, I did and I remembered that my daughter told me to look up promotion codes. I was able to get the item I wanted for quilting for 50% and if I signed up for their coupons by mail I got the shipping for $2.98. Sweet deal I thought.

Canada2010 Tax thread - For Canada and the U.S.
Okay let me see if I have this right as I am throughly confused.
I left Canada in June 2009 - I filed my Canadian taxes for 2009 which included wages and EI benefits.
The EI benefits continued into 2010 for approximately $4600.00 they took the 25% off of them.
I have a T4E now and I have been working in the USA.

My husband needs to file with our US taxes the EI monies from Canada but will use a 2555-EZ to exclude this income as I have paid taxes to Canada on these monies?

Do I have to file taxes in Canada? They have their money already? Isn't my obligation to them upheld when they took the non-resident taxes off?

I struggled with forms and numbers for 4 hours the other night over what to do for the 2010 Candain tax return.

Thanks in advance for any help or light that someone can shed my way.

QUOTE (elsoar @ May 4 2009, 06:12 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Just got our IV interview date - June 18th - one of only three business days this summer we didn't want! As background, we're doing DCF - returned our Packet 3 on March 17th, and Packet 4 arrived today. Unfortunately, June 18th we are both scheduled to be in Calgary, something I (petitioner) can't get out of. We'd like to reschedule but are worried we might not get a new interview date very quickly and we have to be moved out of our apartment (eg, to the US) by September 1. Anyone had any luck rescheduling quickly?

Elly

I will trade the 18th for the 22nd in Montreal if you can swing it.

CanadaRemoval of Conditions - Approved
Hi,

I have been lurking about lately and not posting too much at all., however I wanted to share my good news. My approval for removal of conditions lettter arrived today - can you see me smiling!
Thanks once again for all the help that was posted here on this part of the journey and also thanks for helping my daughter, Jessandtim; she received her approval for a K1 last Friday in Vancouver and she/we used this site to get her petition in order also.

I guess now I can start studying for the Naturalization exam, and apply for that in March 2012.

Everyone has always been such a big help to me in so many ways - I thank God when I found this website!

212 days is approximately 7 months - I understood the maximum length of time without any special visas etc was 6 months minus a day or approximatley 179 days. Does anyone else know about the 212 days?

Thanks,

Ditto with Carla's recommendation to shred the zucchini and then freeze. I have also made bread and butter pickles with zucchini (it was one vegetable that grew well in Alberta), and I also have a marmalde recipe (not unpacked yet) for zucchini with almonds. I have a lemon zucchini and chicken recipe also. Message me if you want the marmalade or chicken recipe.

I too, read "The Time Travellor's Wife" when it first came out in paperback. It is definitely woprth the read. I just finished "The Friday Night Knitting Club" it too was very good. I have bveen quilting lately so not too much time left for reading, but I started "19 Seconds by Jodi P something (too lazy to go get the authors name.)

Happy reading,

My MIL just lent me Edgar Sawtelle, is it a "heavy" book as well?
It is a "dark" book also.

The 1/3rd goes fast, middle third was tough to get through, the ending 1/3 I did on the plane to LA. I was glad I finished it.

I am starting The Road tonight. It is a bit dark I have been told.

I am currently reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and quite enjoying it! :

Oh, one of my students is reading it now. She brought it to Book Club and I now want to read it.

I swore when I finished reading for my comps exam in grad school that I would only read fluff and fun for 10 years. It worked for a while, but let's face it, when your major is British literature and you like it, it's hard to break into pure fluff smile.gif

My current favorite book is The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon. It's a quick read and has some great themes (yeah, I sound like an English teacher laughing.gif )

I'm currently reading Three Cups of Tea What a beautiful book.

"fluff and fun" does that equal brain candy! smile.gif When I completed my B/A at 50; I had a huge party to celebrate my engagement, convecation, and turning 50. Three of my history profs came and gave me a gift certificate to Chapters with the instructions to read some "brain candy" for a change.

I'm currently read The Stone Angel by Margaret Lawrence. My mentor told me to wait until I was much older to read it (40+) because it would mean more to me then....however after all these years of staring at it, I'm giving it a go any ways.

I read "The Stone Angel" last year and enjoyed it very much, if you like it try "Water for Elephants" it is about a circus during the depression. I really found it worthwhile.

CanadaAm I Eligible to Collect EI When I Move to the USA
Yes you can! I moved to USA on your type of visa. I quit work two days before I moved (it was the end of the school year so easily done) I applied via internet as soon as I landed in Los Angeles. I had to emai then a scanned copy of my 2 year permanent residence card and SS card once I had them in hand. I then collected for the full period of time, even when I started working in the USA they topped my EI as my wages here are less than what I made in Canada.

For those than come on K1 it is a much longer process to collect.

Good luck

CanadaDon't you love it when...
Finally, I have something to post here!

Your original message (6/18/2009 3:17:24 AM)Not sure where to send this too, but this should work. I had booked a flight using AIRMILES (no changes option) - I have to be in MOntreal a day earlier than planned to eleviate further anxiety on my upcoming immigration interview at the USA Consulate on June 22nd in the morning. I booked a flight on AC to go a day earlier. While checking my return flight, I noticed in the finer print at the back it states"Failure to travel on any portion of your itinerary will result in cancellation of all remaining flights." After reading that I quickly was able to book the orginal return flight I required with West Jet. I am giving you my WJ confirmation number ***MM65BV*** , your company has always delat fairly with me since your inception, and I want you to know that those seats are available for re-sell. It isn't your fault, I booked my flights with Air MIles and then changed my mind. In these tough times, I want to give back to you for all the excellent service Ihave been receiving for years. Janet SchwankyCompany reply (6/18/2009 12:40:16 PM)Hell Janet,

Thank you for your e-mail. It is great to hear you enjoy flying with us.

I understand why you would want to arrive in Montreal a day ahead of your appointment. This said, I would like to see if I can assist you for the return flight since you had already booked your flight with AIR MILES and then purchased another ticket with WestJet for the same date and flight.

Can you please give me your phone number to discuss this with you?

Thank you for your time and I am looking forward to your response.

Kind regards,

Carine
Bilingual Specialist - Guest Relations
WestJet

Company reply (6/18/2009 12:41:12 PM)Sorry Janet, I meant to great you with Hello Janet. Please accept my apology.

Thank you for your understand and I am waiting for your response.

Carine

Company reply (6/19/2009 2:50:16 PM)Hi Janet,

I have been trying to find a solution for you since you had to book an earlier flight with Air Canada and then a return flight with us. As you know, AIR MILES booking cannot be cancelled and if you don't show up, you normally loose your points and money that was paid.

I think you will be pleased to hear that I have contacted our AIR MILES group to make an exception. So, I have cancelled your AIR MILES booking and contacted AIR MILES to ask them for an exception. You will be refunded 3,200 AIR MILES points and $170.34 to your credit card.

We thank you for your time and all the best for your upcoming interview.

Carine

Now this is why people fly Westjet and not Air Canada.

CanadaThe Canuck EI Thread
An update on the EI situation.

Last week I had still received nothing, so I called the Out of Canada office (thanks JillA for the number in a previous post). The woman there was very helpful, she told me that they had mailed a cheque on August 6th, but I have yet to receive that. She was able to process the next 4 weeks of cards over the telephone over the course of 2 days, and this morning I had a payment placed in my account in Canada. She mentioned that even if we do ask for direct deposit in our original claim it is not always processed as direct deposit, a comoputer glitch. However, since she had manually processed the cards now that everything should be good to go.

So I applied on June 29th and received a payment in the credit union the morning of August 24th.

I hope this will help others in their EI claims.
