Canadawere any of you ever majorly stressing out over finances before leaving and when in the states
I have always worried about debt and such for years, Carnell is more laid back and one day he turned to me and said "Lo (short for Love), why are you so worried it will all get paid back one day, or we will die - please stop fretting." I still backside and worry sometimes. I know I will have some debt when I leave Canada and I will have enough saved and through EI to carry me until I get a new career in California. I wanted this so I wouldn't have to rush into accepting a job that I really didn't want.
So yes, I worry but I am not loosing sleep anymore. smile.gif

Yes, written and road test in Cali. I went and pickd up the book at the DMV today. I won't be here until July if all goes well but I thought I should have some reading material for on the plane.

Good luck with all the tests - we are all routing for you. I haven't taken a road test since I was 17 in NJ so 35 years between tests yikes!!

CanadaPotato Chips in Sandwiches
Plain chips in a bologna with mustard and lettuce sandwich yum yum the very best! Learned about chips in a sandwich in California during the late 60s. Can't be any stranger than the following that I have either had or have seen others eating.

Peanut butter and dill pickle
Peanut butter and onion
Peanut butter and cheez whiz
Peanut butter and lettuce
Peanut butter and mayonnaise
Cucumber and catsup
Pork and beans and onion
Sardines and HP Sauce

Anyone else have an unusual sandwich combo?

CanadaHow did YOU find out about VJ?
I found VJ when I did a google search for K1 visa information. I knew the sending in of a petition for "an unmarried child of an American citizen," wasn't too hard as my father had done that in 2002 (he died in 2005). However, after my father had passed Carnell and I were discussing options available to us. We originally thought a K1 was the way to go go, but switched to a Cr-1 when life's circumstances changed. Thank goodness for this website and all the helpful people, many of you could easily compete with immigration lawyers for business!

CanadaVancouver Interview last week
Oh my goodness, what a nightmare in Vancouver! I know when I was a NVC they told me that I needed to supply some different documents when I was positive I had sent the correct one. Trailmix suggested that I talk to an agent and have them get a supervisor pull and look at my file. The file was pulled and I did indeed have the correct forms! This caused a delay of about a week. If you are confident that you send in the proper documentation then it can't hurt to ask if someone higher up the chain can look at your file.

Good luck with the rest of your journey and I am so sorry that your visit to Vancouver was marred by your unfortunate experience at the consulate.

So, as an American, my wonderful Canadian SO has told his family what my family eats as a snack on Christmas day and, according to him, they all say "yuck" and how can we stand to mix those "tastes". So, here's my chance to find out if he & his family is weird or if this is truly an "American" thing... like poutine is "Canadian".

We eat cream cheese with cocktail sauce (like what you eat with shrimp) poured on top of the cream cheese brick. Then, you put crabmeat on top of the cocktail sauce. This is served by cutting off a portion of the cheese brick and then you use a cracker (such as Ritz or Town House or Club Crackers).

Soooo yummy!!! I think it has to do with the sweet (cream cheese), salty (crabmeat), and tangy (cocktail sauce). whistling.gif

This is good with drained canned clams also smile.gif

CanadaInterviews at Montreal consulate
One way to speed things up at NVC is to pay everything online and not to use snal mail. We lost between 4 - 5 weeks because my husband send everything in by mail and did not utilize the quickier method of paying online. Hope that helps you out.

Hi all from sunny California.

I have been all around looking for Neo Citron, and no one has ever heard of this product. Is it another light weight item to have my family put in a care package for me, and another item for the "only available in Canada list? Theraflu just isn't the same sad.gif

Thanks,

I would carry my traveler's health insurance for the time I was to be away, along with my return ticket. I was never questioned but I always had a stack of things to show connections back to Canada. I had a NEXUS pass also for the last year.

CanadaWhere is the best place to cash your 2008 tax refund cheque??
I have always had direct deposit for my tax refunds. Will they continue to do this for the year after I leave Canada? I will be keeping an account open in Canada at the credit union for my EI payments, and will use Custom House to transfer the funds to the US credit union.

Thanks,

CanadaOops, they caught me
Yikes! Yep, they get ya coming and going! I didn't even check off the little box for GST on this years taxes. I figure that it is too much work and trouble to cancel it. As a side note on GST, I was paid $10.10 for my 2007 GST rebate - for the whole year! After filing my 2008 taxes, I received a bill for $5.05 - as my marital status had changed in 2008 (we were married July 18, 2008.) What that has to do with a 2007 GST refund is beyond me. I just paid the bill. I am surprised it took them so long to "catch up with you."

So sorry the dollar is doing its thing again.

CanadaRenting a Car
I did a road trip from Vancouver to Saskatchewan awhile back, my poor car could never do the Rockies, so I booked a car on www.hotwire.com which I could pick up at the airport. The price was way cheaper than Budget or National - it was Alamo and even when I found out who the provider of the car was the price was way lower than what they had advertized on the Alamo website. So do try hotwire. I have never benn stung by them yet and have been using them for about 7 years now.

If you have one at an airport it will take longer to get the interview. I remember that when I printed off my actual interview paper/date confirmation there was something on it in small print about if you have to change your interview date call such in such number.

Good luck,

I applied for a Nexus card 2 weeks ago and got conditionally approved on Tuesday. I'm still waiting to set up my interview because now I have to make a trip home solely to get this taken care of.

I just wanted my wait times to be less. I feel like I'm always waiting at the border so I might as well get it.

I'm a PR though so I don't know what its like if you have a pending application.

I think I will go down to Pearson and get it all done.

So since you are a U.S. PR - is there any reason you have to go back to Canada to do the interview - or could you have done it in the U.S.?

I'm just thinking about getting a Nexus card for us and i'm wondering where the nearest interview center is - can't find a list on their website. From what I am reading we can do the interview in the U.S. - just wondering if they have them in Orlando.

I believe that you can only interview where the Nexus card is used most frequently aka near the Canadian border. I know that my daughter's boyfriend has one and he came up from San Diego to Vancouver for the interview.

Smart idea, the border line ups are killers! Each person in the car needs a NEXUS pass, so if you husband is travelling with you - he will need it also.

May 14th - used iris scan at Vancouver airport on the way to Los Angeles NO problems
May 24th - used iris scan upon arrival Vancouver airport No problems

The NEXUS pass is well worth the $50.00 even if you only use it a few times.

CanadaNexus pass while waiting for K1
I applied for and received my Nexus pass last May. At that time I had a CR-1 pending with my father. It involved 2 parts the actual application that is done on line and you are then conditional approved this cost $ 50.00 for 5 years. I did mine at the aiport in Vancouver as I wanted the iris scan too. If you have no criminal record there is no reason why you can't have the Nexus card that is what I was told at the interview. My cases was a bit complicated because in the Immigration and Customs computer I was still listed as a registered alien in the USA even though I left when I was 18 and returned to Canada and hadn't lived there since 1975. They made me promise that I would not try to illegally try to enter the USA and STAY while my CR-1 was being completed (my father's petition). I have not had any trouble using the iris scan at the airport, and this is after my husband's petition has been entered into the system. LindaB here on VJ has a Nexus pass also. It is they way to go in my humble opinion.

Good luck,
Janet

CanadaGirly thread (men beware!)
I too just read through all the previous postings. I have waxed, plucked, and threaded my eyebrows and threading is the best. If you live in a city with a south Asian area it should be fairly reasonable. Herre in vancouver it is 5 dollars - cheap I know.
Waxing is my prefered method of brazillian waxing, but I have been going to the same girls for 7 years and when I was in the states for 176 days last year (not six months) I used Nair. I hadn't looked really hard for some one to do it, and I it wasn't until right before I was coming back to Canada that a friend's daughter told me about a place to go. As I am in the over 50 age bracket and also a fuller sized woman, I am somwhat apprehesive of finding a new waxer. I personally like it gone, and so did my sister who experienced it after her chemotherapy for breast cancer.
For those women who feel they are experiencing more infections, remember to void your bladder prior to and after sexual activities - don't just go to sleep. This certainly wasn't explained to me until I was in my early 40s, and it has been very good information which I try and share with any women who will listen.
I would have loved to try laser treatments, but as I am natural reddish blonde hair woman, I am not a candidate. The lighter your hair the most likelihood it won't work.

Good luck in all your hairless endeavours ladies!

CanadaVancouver Medical Thursday May 27th
Tips to a quick medical -
Get there early - once inside you are asked to line up in the order you arrived outside
Fill out the paperwork quickly and get back in line
I was # 1 and was finished with all blood work, chest xray, and dr examination by 8 am and didn't need to be back until 2 pm to pick up results.

If you can get in and out you would have six hours to enjoy d/t Vancouver.

Good luck!
