K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresEmployment
you do need a SSN first. But you can file EAD before you get married but it will cost extra. When filing EAD along with AOS it's included in the AOS fee which is $1010. EAD takes about 2-4 months to be approved. the only way to get a temp EAD is if her POE is JFK. but thats not even promised. the Temp EAD would be valid for 3 months.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresK-1 or K-3?
K-1 is faster. and you/he can visit during the process. He would just have to show ties to his country so they know he will be returning. things like rent, car payments...

Your fiance is from Canada, Right? Well if so there's 2 in Canada: Montreal and Vancouver. so it's which ever one of those that is closest to your fiance.

And yes your foreign fiance will have to go to the US Embassy in Canada for an interview before getting approved a visa

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresVisa waiving for 88 days,..bad for the k1 ?
I'm not sure if they look at it bad.. but my now husband came here 3 times and very close to the 90 day limit each time and it didn't hurt us at all in the K-1 process.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresMedical questions (UK)
First off.. Welcome to VJ!!!

Now to answer some questions....

1. It asks for your vaccination records - where would I be able to obtain them, (GP)?You can get your vaccination record at your doctor. My husband had to write a letter explaining why he needed it, but it was very easy to obtain.
2. I am a 26YO male in the UK on a K1 applicaion, so which ones would I need? It's easiest if you go to your family doctor and get the vaccinations, because they're most likely free there.. there's only like 3or4 you will need at your age, I believe
3. And I heard that I could just defer them till my AOS?I'm unsure of this. but My husband decided just to get them done with
4. Also, do I need to phone up for the medical myself or will the Embassy do this for me? Once you have your LON case number you will have to phone up and make the appointment yourself. When making the app they ask you for the case number.

I hope everything goes smoothly and quick for you through London!!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresWhat was the fastest NOA1 to NOA2 for Vermont filers in 2008?
we got approved really fast.. little over a month and had the visa 1 day over 3 months. but we're no different then everyone else waiting. we did nothing different at all. We did our own paperwork and followed all the guides on here. just got really lucky.

Congrats on getting in with little harassment! I know that the customs officers hate! when you know more then them. My last visit to the UK was quite amusing as well. Customs officer didn't know what a K-1 was and looked at me like I was making it up, but she had all the paper work in front of her.

Enjoy your time/visit with your fiancee!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresWhy the U.S.?
We chose the US because we had more support from my family then his. Both our families support us, but his more moral and mine more financially. And also we want to settle down and have kids in England so we figured we can get his US citizenship and then work on moving back to England.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresJust starting..Tight Timeline please help
I wouldn't try to get married there. I think the I-129F is the smart way to go and if it's not approved by the time you have to leave, your fiance could always come to the US with you on the Visa Wavier Program while you wait for the approval. No need for a lawyer, people here on the board are all that you need! The process does take some time, money and patience but there is a chance it could be approved by July.

Money --

I-129F - $545
Medical - ~$300
Police Certificate - $70

That's the big amounts.

Welcome to the forum and best of luck to you!!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresUS Student wants to marry UK Student.. What can we Do??!!
no, I haven't tried flying to another airport, only because Heathrow is the cheapest and the closest to my husband's parents house. but we're planning a visit once my husband gets his green card, and I'm determined to fly some where else. But I also had trouble coming in to England from France by ferry. so it wasn't just a heathrow problem, but I understood the reasoning there.

I wish you the best of luck with the K-1 if you choose that route. We had a great experience with K-1 and London Embassy, actually one of the quickest petition to visa in hand that I've seen on this site.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresUS Student wants to marry UK Student.. What can we Do??!!
I know exactly what you mean about Heathrow.. I call it hell.. Every time I flew over I was excited to see my now husband but I would cry before going and when getting off the plane my heart was pounding. They were horrible to me, they detained me for almost 3 hours, I didn't care if they did that because I was telling the truth about everything, so there was nothing for them to find. but anyways they told me they called my husband and told him that they were holding me, but they never did, and if my husband left Heathrow, it's a 2 hour drive back.

They went through all my clothes and held them up, the guy took my underwear and held them up and there were loads other people around and I grabbed them and said "yes that's my underwear" and he pointed to his wedding ring and said yes I know! Ugh no reason to hold them up! It's happened more than once, and I never overstayed always left when I said and never did anything wrong.

Sorry to get off topic there, but as for your situation, Anyone can co-sponsor for you and you won't have any trouble in London Embassy. My dad co-sponsored for us and there was no problem at all. and London usually doesn't ask for relationship proof and we had loads. All you need is a co-sponsor and you will need tax returns, paycheck stubs, and a letter from their employee.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedurescost for K1
First off I know we were very lucky with a quick and easy K-1 process..

And really the costs are not straight forward but there are things that could be given up (gifts..) so you can be together a little sooner. and with Skype the communication doesn't have to be given up.

and then there's musts in the K-1 that have to be covered.

Nothing comes free. Not even love.

I understand what everyone is saying about having savings when you do get married.. and yes it would be nice to have savings but we started out with nothing at all. and working up. We spent all of our savings on visits and enjoying time together. Things were rough when he first got here but we're just happy to be together that money isn't a problem. We have each other and we're both happy with that.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Procedurescost for K1
It costs way too much.. but I can break it down well what I remember at least...

Petition: $455
Medical: 180GBP plus any vacs
Police Certificate (UK): 35GBP
Visa: $131
SMS: 14GBP+
Plus Transportation to London for the interview. and in some cases a Hotel.
All that for a not even 15 minute Interview! What an anti-climax.
Then all the little things like mailing paperwork and notaries.. along with the shipping of belongings and plane ticket.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresEnglish fiance - K1 questions...any help?
We didn't use an attorney, I've heard mixed things about them, more bad than good tho. The process wasn't hard at all without an attorney but that was our case. Our case was very straight forward. It took us 91 days to get the visa, very quick, actually one of the quickest I've seen on this site, and we did it all on our own.

As for visits, I went to England when waiting for the NOA2 and had no problems, He didn't get a chance to visit because the process went a lot quicker then we thought. But I heard plenty of times that people visited while waiting. Just so you both have ties to your home country, you shouldn't have a problem.

He won't be able to work right away but the sooner you marry and file AOS the sooner he can work. Usually the work permit (EAD) takes 90 days from filing.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresHoneymoon locations in the US
Another vote for Gatlinsburg, TN! That's where we went! It was beautiful! and We're thinking about going back next spring. We had our own private cabin with 2 Hot tubs and a pool table for cheaper then a hotel! We also saved loads because we had a kitchen so we spent the whole week cooking together.

Another one is Poconos, PA. Though I'm only an hours drive from there, we choose to drive 8 hours to TN, because TN was half the price.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresAdvise on Likelyhood/Timeframe of K1 Visa
London is one of the faster embassies, in paperwork and assigning interviews. If you're looking to start the process soon, you have a very good chance of getting the K-1 by the end of the year. and as it looks from you're information, you shouldn't have a problem doing so. As someone already said, just so one of you're visits was within the last 2 years, you meet all the requirements.

Best of luck to the both of you!

Not too good to be true, but not true for everyone. We filed Feb 1, 2008 and had the visa in hand by May 7, 2008. 91 days from start til interview.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresMy previous question with a little more added
I had a 6 month ban on my passport to visit England. Now when going to the UK, I never was denied entry but was told to leave for 6 months in between my next visit. It's actually happened to me twice, Both times I waited the 6 months and had no problems. and both times the 6 month ban were stamped in my passport.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresusc visiting foreign fiance

I feel like we we were on the same trip. I nearly didn't make it INTO England because the miserable girl questioning me at customs thought I was trying to move there. WHERE is the K-1 and other visa training at airports?!! That most don't even know about K-1 alone bugs the hell out of me.

I did everything right, answered all questions with a smile, without reaching over the counter to snatch a handful of hair from her self-righteous head like I really wanted to. It was a nightmare. Thank GOD John was on the other side of the wall by the duty-free shops, confirming my story to customs on his cell phone.

If I had to do it again, I would definitely make sure I had proper docs showing my ties to the U.S., you just NEVER know who you'll be dealing with.

Edited to add: I recall reading just yesterday of a USC being denied entry into Canada (of all places!) to visit her fiance.

UK hates me and I've had trouble almost every visit to the UK. I had plenty of ties but they just don't trust me tho I never did anything wrong and left every time I told them I was going to. I never got denied but had to fight my way in. I was honest every time. They should know me at heathrow by now. oh well. At least they called him and confirmed, I asked them to call my then bf and they lied and told me they did. They never did and held me for over 2 hours without him knowing, ugh.

back on topic tho, if you have enough ties to your home country in this case the US, there shouldn't be any problems. Just always be honest.
Damian&KellyFemaleEngland2010-02-17 20:42:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & Proceduresusc visiting foreign fiance
I (usc) went to visit my then fiance in England when our I-129F was being processed. The netherlands wouldn't know anything about the I-129F and it wouldn't hurt if they did. because all they are worried about is if your usc fiance is going to stay in their country illegally. So if your fiance has ties to the US: a job, a house, bills... then he shouldn't have any problems visiting you. I don't believe it's much of a risk as a denied entry shouldn't have any affect on your K-1.

I showed my NOA1 when visiting England and they had no interest. They didn't know what the K-1 was just knew what I told them: that my english husband was trying to move to the US which means I'd probably not try to stay in England while I was there visiting.

$455 for the petition
and $350 for the visa
Must pay both as each fee is for a different process.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresFee Changes??
The fees for the I-129F Petition didn't change. The fee is still $455.

What changed is the fee for the visa which you're fiance will pay at the interview in London. The fee was $131 now the fee for the visa is $350.
Damian&KellyFemaleEngland2010-07-08 17:26:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresJudgement Call
There's no need to go to the interview. London is pretty straight forward and in most cases doesn't even ask for any relationship proof. London is mainly worried about criminal records and the affidavit of support. If you make enough on the affidavit and both have a clean criminal record than you shouldn't have anything to worry about. I'd use the money else where, maybe on the wedding or the plane ticket for her to come here or even a nice honeymoon!

From what I read, all the USCs that went to the interview in London with their fiances weren't allowed to talk anyways. And if your case is straight forward than you being there isn't going to be the decision maker. As it wouldn't be the decision maker if there are red flags.
Damian&KellyFemaleEngland2010-07-10 09:36:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresWhat's the fastest the K-1 has been approved?
The process times change all the time so there's no point in looking into the shortest, I'd look for the process times for now. Not just the times for Vermont but also the times for London. At the minute London is on the slow side for scheduling interviews.

On another note, from the last time I've searched the timelines on here, I have the shortest process for London K-1s. Took 91 days from the day we sent the I-129f to the interview day.

I wish you the best of luck.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresJust Beginning...Need my UK fiance' here yesterday.....

Kenny, you don't have to tell me how relationships work. I have never claimed that butterflies and strong desire will result in a lasting relationship, because quite frankly, I know it doesn't work that way. I know people that met in "real life" and had the same feeling of wanting to be with that person "forever" and in the end it didn't work out because they lacked other things that were vital, such as communication skills, mutual goals and values, similar priorities, trust, even the ability to be friends and spend time together that didn't end in sex.

The reason I was telling you about how I felt was because you questioned if it was possible to fall in love when you haven't met the other person. It's easy for people to say "yes I loved him before I met him". So I gave you examples of how I knew I loved him (caring about him, doing things for him, making sacrifices for him, wanting a future together, wanting to spend time together, really getting to know him, etc... love is something that is difficult to put into language, but I consider those to be pretty defining features of being in love). You say it's irrational to think it's love, and you may be right. Like I said, love is hard to define. It feels differently to different people. But my interpretation of my feelings at the time was that I felt very strongly for him and had a desire to be together.

Having said that, there IS a huge difference when you transition from an online relationship to in-person relationship. You really get to notice things that you wouldn't have otherwise. How he uses his eyes and hand signals during conversation, how clean and tidy he presents himself and his living space, his habits, how he interacts with others, the list goes on. Having a transition from long distance to living together has its hardships too. Personally, we didn't have much surprise as we had spent weeks living together before getting engaged, and then several months living together before getting married. We already knew each other.

Someone recently told me that me and my husband seem inseparable, and when I replied that we just love spending time together, the person laughed and said "you've been married for just over ONE YEAR, wait until you get to the five years, ten years, etc". I was told that I was still in the honeymoon stage. And that's a fair comment, I know how that works. But at the same time, this measure of testing the relationship via longevity is flawed in itself; because at what point does it 'pass the test'? I know people that didn't think we would be together after a few months, and we're now coming up on our five-year anniversary of being together in the 'real world'. I know people that have pulled out of the immigration process; couples that met in the conventional 'real world' that are separated and contemplating divorce... do we get to say we made it because we out-lasted them? What about when we make our tenth wedding anniversary, are we still in the trial period? What about those people that have been married for nearly FORTY YEARS that suddenly get divorced, are we allowed to say that they didn't work out because technically it wasn't forever?

To me, if your marriage breaks down BECAUSE of the issues that are brought up due to distance, immigration, adjusting to living together.... that means you probably jumped into it, called it love, and weren't able to have a lasting relationship based on what you thought you had.

I completely agree with you, Gemmie. I've been with my husband for over 4 years and people that see us together so happy, still say we're in the "honeymoon-phase". I honestly think it's just something everyone uses to explain why they, themselves aren't as happy. But the US puts 2 years as the trial phase which I don't understand because even if you were to divorce, you can still get a 10 year green card. But anyways.

As for Relationships breaking up because of distance, I don't believe it's really them rushing into things, there are just some relationships that shouldn't be and some many people blame the distance on all their problems, and once that distance is gone there's nothing to blame. That's another good reason why you should meet in person and well have to.

As for the argument with Kenny, never going to win because he's not in the position to. I completely understand how Dawn and Gemmie feel. I felt it and it's proved to be right as we've been happily married for over 2 years now.

And in my last post, I wasn't saying to risk it, but more so saying the visa process wasn't the hardest part to over come, more so the parts that came after that I wasn't warned or prepared for.
Damian&KellyFemaleEngland2010-11-04 15:07:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresJust Beginning...Need my UK fiance' here yesterday.....
I have to step in here, just because I honestly think the visa process for the UK differs from those of other countries. Everyone keeps stressing the point you have to prove your relationship, which is the truth, I mean with the initial packet you have to send proof you met in person, but honestly in my whole visa process, I sent 2 boarding passes, 6 pictures, and copies of our passport stamps, and my husband was asked 2 questions. We really didn't need to love each other for this process to work, though we have a real and loving relationship, the visa was a walk in the park. I seen that movie, The Proposal, and going into the process I thought that was how it was going to be, but at the interview they didn't question my husband at all and looked at none of our relationship proof.

My only point is everyone keeps saying how the government is going to test every part of the relationship, I didn't feel that way at all. And I do believe they can feel this way about each other, but I also believe they have to spend time together before getting married and taking that huge step towards a visa. As I said in my other post, we wouldn't have ever survived if I didn't visit England and know how he lived and the things he likes and misses from home.
Damian&KellyFemaleEngland2010-11-04 03:09:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresJust Beginning...Need my UK fiance' here yesterday.....
I think this has gone too far. As I understand what Kenny is saying, because going from an online relationship to a married couple was a hard change and took a lot of work from my husband and I. So I won't jump all over Kenny, and honestly I think men think more rationally than women when it comes to this subject. I think if you put my husband on the spot and asked him, he'd tell you we married too fast though we met 3 years before getting married. I don't look at it as a fairy tale because international relationships have a lot to conquer, so it may sound sweet and unreal, there are a lot of things we had to over come to be where we are today. A lot of change as a couple and a lot of heartbreak from goodbyes to my husband leaving his family behind. When we applied for the K-1 I thought it was going to be like a fairy tale, I thought life was going to be great because there would be no more tearful goodbyes, but boy was I wrong, it's been a roller coaster. From financial stress to homesickness, it's great having him here but it's hard at the same time. Right now it's better than it's ever been as he's been here over 2 years and has his own life and friends along with our life together. No one really warned me what real life was with my husband, as all I knew was visits where one of us always was off work and sometimes both of us, we had no responsibilities and just were happy to have each other.

I'm a strong believer in online dating and relationships working out, but there is so much you just don't know until you're in that position.

Dawn, you can friend me, and message me anytime. I wish you both the best of luck and a happy first meeting! It's something you'll never forget!
Damian&KellyFemaleEngland2010-11-03 17:54:00
K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresJust Beginning...Need my UK fiance' here yesterday.....
I'm going to have to stick up for Dawn here as I knew that I was going to marry my husband before I met him in person. We waited 10 months to meet in person after meeting online, and the only reason we waited so long was because of money. I was so sure I wanted to be with him, that his first visit here was 3 months long and he planned to spend the whole visit with me at my house. No hotel booked and no second thoughts. and after that visit there were talks of getting married right away. Of course we waited because we didn't want to rush into things. But back to what I was saying, He was that same guy I fell in love with online, and meeting in person just made it that much better.

But of course you have to meet before filing the K-1. And not to mention, It'd be a good idea to visit there and have some idea of his culture, though England isn't that much different then the US, it is different and visiting would help you understand him and his ways. For me, going to England, helped me out so I could help my husband when he got home sick once he moved here.
