US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 CANADIAN-WANT DUAL CITIZENSHIP

My name is Kerri I am a Canadian with my green card since 2009 and married to us citizen since 2008. I am considering getting my citizenship here but not sure. I have many questions like:

Can I have dual citizenship?

If so, what do I have to do to let Canada know?

Fellow canadians gone thourgh this are there any tax implications if I have dual?

Would I have to pay taxes in both countries?

I just want to make sure I do my research before hand as I am not willing to give up my citizenship.

Well, Vancouver said that if there's going to be a replacement here in Edmonton, it will be posted soon. Otherwise, we're SOL. I've gone about trying to schedule one for Calgary just in case.

That is weird cause I just had an appointment with DR.Chana in Edmonton on Mar11/08. That was the first day he was back from vacation. You should check again cause I just picked up my package on monday Mar24/08.

I called the Public health region where I mostly went to school and they had all my health records from when I was a Child. You need to contact you public health unit and they should have all of them. They must have a data base because I have lived in 3 different provinces and they had all of my records.

CanadaAny canadians here have info about getting a US driver's license?
It is just called an international drivers license. It is not specific to the usa. I found this
What exactly is an IDP?
The IDP provides a conversion of your Canadian provincial driver's licence into a universal driving classification, allowing you to drive a vehicle in a foreign country without further tests or applications. This permit was authorized especially for tourists by a 1949 UN treaty among nations of the world. It is proof that you possess a valid driver's licence, issued by a competent authority in Canada, and is only valid when used in conjunction with a valid Canadian provincial driver's licence.

What are the additional advantages of the IDP?
An IDP provides you with an extra form of photo identification, as well as providing a translation of your valid Canadian driver's licence into 10 different languages. Most international car rental agencies will request an IDP, even though one may not be required to drive in their country.

What do I need to know about re-applying for an IDP?
If you have a current IDP and are re-applying, please remember to allow sufficient time for you to receive your IDP to ensure that your current one will not expire.

What you'll need to get an IDP?
You can only receive an IDP if you are 18 years of age or older, and hold a valid Canadian provincial driver's licence. An IDP cannot be issued for provisional, learner's or suspended licences, or for any category of vehicle which is not presently covered by that same provincial driver's licence. In addition to meeting the above conditions, you will require:

An IDP fee payment of $15.00 - This fee can be paid by cash, Visa or MasterCard; AMA Members in good standing may also pay by cheque made payable to AMA.
If applying by mail, then payment must be either by money order or certified cheque drawn on a Canadian bank payable to the Alberta Motor Association (Note: AMA can not accept personal cheques from non-members). If you require the IDP to be sent by regular mail, please enclose an additional $7.00 CAD (including GST) for Canadian addresses or $13.00 CAD (including GST) for addresses in the United States. (AMA can only send IDP's by registered mail). If you require the IDP to be sent overseas, please contact us as the cost of delivery will vary depending on the destination.
Credit card numbers along with expiry date, signature of person named on card and letter authorizing us to charge the credit card for the cost of the IDP and shipping may be enclosed at your own risk.
A completed and signed CAA IDP application form - Applications may be done in person at any AMA centre or CAA office. If you are unable to visit a CAA office, you may print a copy of the application form and, once completed and signed, mail it in to your local AMA centre along with your passport-sized photos, fee payment and photocopy (front and back) of your valid Canadian provincial driver's licence.

How long does it take to get an IDP?
If you visit an AMA centre, we can process an IDP for you in about fifteen minutes.* The information on your IDP must match the information on your Alberta driver's license. If you need to update the address on your Alberta driver's license, it will take a minimum of 2 weeks for the update to be made. We recommend that you visit our centre 2 -3 weeks prior to your departure to ensure that we are able to issue your permit. If your IDP is being mailed, you should allow at least three weeks for the IDP to reach you.

CanadaAny canadians here have info about getting a US driver's license?
As a canadian you can get an international drivers license that is good for one year. You have don't give up your original DL. Then when what ever state you live in you could give that one up and keep your other one.

YAY! I'm excited for you! Did they email you or did it come in the mail?

It makes me a little bit sad though, if your date was the 28th, then there's no way mine will be on the 10th. I was still really hoping for that.

Thank you! But don't feel discouraged as it was one of the dates i picked. I gave them three dates. I got it by email. Actually I sent them an email about 5 days ago and hadn't heard anything so I emailed them today and in a matter of about 5minutes i got one back telling me of my interview date. I think they only answer emails on Mondays and Firdays. I change my subject line first though. I put Attention KVisas:My Name,Case#. You should get yours really soon.

A question for you...

For packet 3, step 1, did you send these documents:

DS-230 Part I
DS-156 (2 forms - electronically completed)
DS-156K (hand written? )

And then for packet 3, step 2, you sent them the checklist ONLY?

Is that right?

Thanks!

Only asked for DS-230 Part1

and both DS-156 are part of step2 for me.

I asked for my interview to be April 10th. Maybe I was too specific. I don't have my medical booked yet as I'm getting it done the day before the interview in Vancouver, since there isn't a doctor here in Edmonton anymore.

That's the reason I'm a little worried about when my appointment will be. I need to make travel arrangements, hotel reservations, a medical appointment etc!

Yikes! Well, hopefully you get an email soon, or your appointment letter! Or both! Hopefully I do too!

The one thing that worries me is that Charlene and her fiance received an email last Thursday and Packet 4 the same day. They also emailed the consulate the same time that I did, the very first time.

Maybe you should book your medical and then if it doesn't come that day then move it. Or maybe call vancouver medical place and see how long of a wait it is to get into them to make sure. You can never be to careful.

In the checklist did you mention when you would like to have your interview?

Btw, have you all booked your medicals?[/quote]

My medical is done and picked it up on monday. So I am done everything that needs to be done. Maybe I should refax my papers. It sure would be great if they sent you something when they got everything. Yeah ask for an interview anywhere between Apr12-28. I hope they get back to me soon as my NOA2 Expires May8/08.

I had the wrong Birth Cert with me so I had to run to Robson St to get another copy done. Even having to do that we were in and out with my visa in hand in less than 3 hours.

Hey all, I apologize if this has been asked a bazillion times before but I've searched and I can't seem to find the answer. On the Embassy review page it says that we need form OF-156/DS-156. Is that one or the other? I've filled out and printed off DS-156 but want to know if I need OF-156 as well. Also, it says to bring OF-167 and attachment, well, I've looked high and low and all I have is the attachment. Is this normal? Do I have to go somewhere to find and download OF-167?

Just a little bit of a freak out you know! I need to freak out about something! tongue.gif I just really want to make sure everything's in order. Having the medical after the interview has gotten me on edge enough. I just don't want anything else to go backwards!

Thanks!

I know nothing about the OF-156 but you do need the OF-167 and that isn't downloadable. I will see if I can find a copy of a blank one and send it to you. I would just worry about what they told you on the checklist.
