US Citizenship General DiscussionRenwing my US Passport in a rush ?
QUOTE (user786 @ Apr 15 2008, 10:39 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I need to travel as soon as possible for an emergency but I just noticed my US passport is expiring in about one month.
Will I have problems traveling out of the US and into the Caribbean?
Also, what happens if my passport expires while I am still overseas?
Will I be able to go to a US embassy abroad and get a document or something I can travel back to the US on with my expired passport ?

Anyone with any experience ?

When I needed my passport in a hurry i went right to the passport agency and got my passport the same day so I'm thinking u can do the same to renew it. but I'm unsure

Thank you, Just Bob.

I didn't know if leaving before applying, even if it's just a month or so, would mess anything up.

One last question, since the time my husband got his green card, July 2009, He's been out of the US for a month in total. Does this affect anything? Or can he still apply for citizenship when the 90 days open, April 2012?

We've been weighing up our options, as this plan B has most to do with our employment situation so will have to be discussed sooner then put into action. And as it stands, by next summer, we'll be either getting ready to move to England or buying a house and settling down and permanently planting our roots for the next few years. If Plan B is used, moving to England, it's because the employment situation fell through and we're short of money so 2 round trips will be pretty much out of the question.

Thanks everyone again!

Yes, I'm aware of the taxes. We'll deal with this when the time comes. I'm not sure if we'll be moving back right away anyways, and our original plan was to wait until we're done with US immigration before having kids. We'd love to stick with that plan, even if we decide to move back to England.

Thank you both for the advice. I talked to my husband about this, and we've decided that we'll wait to get his citizenship before moving. We'll have to sort me a visa for England anyways so by the time that's sorted it will probably be time to file anyways, and whats another 6 months after the last few years.

Thank you. Looks like we have an option leave with the option of starting over, or wait a few more months before leaving the US.

We'd really love to be done with at least US immigration before having children, but I guess time is on our side, since we're still young.

Not sure this is in the right place at all, So I'm sorry if it's not.

I have a few questions about citizenship for my husband. He moved here to the US, May 2008, (on K-1) but we waited (financial Reasons) almost a year to apply for AOS, so he received his 2 yr Green card July 2009. My understanding is he can apply for citizenship 90 days before 3 years of the date on his green card, so April 2012. I hope this is all right, this isn't the part I'm confused with.

My husband brought up today, that he'd like to think about moving back to England, if our future plans fall through. A back up plan so we're not put into a situation with no way out. We've always planned to move back in a few years time after he became a US citizen. But with this being said, the future plans are suppose to be going through in September of this year, which means if this falls through, we'll be looking to move back far sooner than expected, and before the 90 day window opens.

We were just wondering what happens if we move before he can become a citizen. We just filed for ROC, so we won't be leaving before he gets his 10 year green card, Which should be around the End of the year. We really don't want to start over if we want to come back. So what do we have to do for him to be able to keep the 10 year green card, even if we're living in England? Also can he apply for citizenship if he's not living in the US? If he can apply for US citizenship from abroad, how does this work? What residency requirements are there?

Thanks in advanced for all your help!
Kelly

US Citizenship General DiscussionA Few Questions
Thank you. No, he never overstayed, we just went back and forth, 90 days here, 90 there. We've only taken 2 trips since he got his green card, so that's not an issue. It's the 5 year thing that's confusing. But if we're honest, I don't see it being a problem either way, well at least I hope it's not.

Thanks again. Filing on April 16, when his 90 days opens.

US Citizenship General DiscussionA Few Questions
so in my case, number of days outside the US wouldn't be that many as he moved over a year before becoming a LPR. and he spent most of the year before here in the US on the VWP. This is all questioned at interview? if so I don't see either way being wrong as it can be checked and its not trying to hide anything? the wording is so confusing. so i should only list the 2 trips since becoming an LPR, and list the days from 5 years. what about the number of trips, he's come and gone a few times on VWP in the prior year? how about the address question is this also 5 years?

US Citizenship General DiscussionA Few Questions
Thank you for the quick reply. Funny thing with the speeding ticket, we paid it in person, so I still have the ticket and the receipt of payment. So that crosses that worry off. Just wanted to double check, because my husband just keeps questioning me, I may act like his secretary at times but I don't always have all the answers.

Thanks again!

US Citizenship General DiscussionA Few Questions
Just preparing to apply for my husband's citizenship and have run into a few questions..

1. Should we put N/A or None in all blank fields even if it says only answer if the answer to a certain question is yes?
2. My husband had a traffic ticket last year, no points, just a fine, so do we have to answer yes to getting cited? Will this be an issue? We paid the fine and that was it. I probably still have the ticket, should I include this?
3. He's applying based on 3 year residency, should he include the days outside of the US before he moved here on part 7?
4. Also on part 7, he's spent 35 days outside of the US since becoming a LPR, will this affect the timing in which he can apply for citizenship?
5. He's a UK citizen, will he be able to become a dual citizen? or is there something we have to do in order for him to keep his UK citizenship?

Thanks in advanced.

US Citizenship General Discussionsending application 1 day before eligibility date
Yikes.. if I would have saw this before we sent it. Just my experience here, my husband's eligibility date was Sunday April 15th, so we sent it out Saturday April 14th, and it arrived on Monday the 16th. Check cashed and NOA in hand... So I don't think postmark matters?

My husband applied for citizenship and he has bio on Friday. We're planning on going to England to visit at the end of the summer. I'm not sure what part of the process he'll be at during that time but what happens if he has to travel in between his interview and oath ceremony? My understanding is that he's not a citizen til Oath so will he still have and be a green card holder and can he still travel using it? Also, Does he have to get a US passport to travel after becoming a US citizen? We didn't have this travel planned before applying or we would have waited til after.

Thanks in advance.

You're looked at like a USC, and a USC can't leave the country without a US passport. Doesn't matter what other passports you have.

Very glad it was postponed, as things are getting worse by the hour. The eye will be over us sometime in the night, looking likely that we'll be without power. Hope everyone stays safe!

Thank you for everyone's help. As of right now we're gonna set out around 7 to make it there by 11, but at 8am (when they open) we'll call and see if they are in fact open. I've been checking the news stations and every school is closed but nothing about government buildings. My guts saying they'll be closed, but we really don't want to miss it. We've already taken off work and put funds aside for the trip.

Just wondering what will happen if we don't go and they still hold the Oath? Though the main part of the storm won't hit until tomorrow night, if we drive there and go to Oath, we may hit the storm for our drive back. We know as of right now roads are still open.

So My husband is suppose to have his Oath Ceremony tomorrow morning at 11, in Philly. I just heard Philly is in a state of emergency, though the storm isn't suppose to hit until Monday evening/night. I'm not sure what to do about this, it's a 2 hour drive for us. I don't want to just miss the Oath as we waited over 2 months to get a date, but I don't know how to contact them. We'd have to leave here before they open in the morning if we wanna make it on time. Is there anything one I can contact today about this? I know USCIS is closed Sundays and the Philly site is down for maintenance.

Hubby was finally rescheduled an Oath since his first one was cancelled due to the Hurricane. His Oath is November 26th at 11am in Philly. A bit annoyed as they're holding an Oath the same day here in our home town but instead we have to drive 2 hours! But either way, we're looking forward to finally being finished!

So after my husband's interview 2 months ago which didn't go very well. He passed the civics test easily but got an RFE for proof that we lived together, which I did send proof but they wanted more. We came home and sent it right away and been waiting since. Finally 2 months later, today we got an update saying he's been scheduled an oath ceremony. It's such a relief we're just about done!!

It's good to see everyone's process going fast! We're kinda stuck, it's been a month since Bio and still no update. I wasn't too worried until I seen a fellow Philly filer with a later bio get an interview letter. We still haven't been put in line for an interview, is there anything I can do or should do to check everything is going ok?

Love to see everyone's case moving :) Philly is a bit slow, though I can't say I'm not worried, as bio was almost 3 weeks ago and it still hasn't changed status to in line for scheduling. But we aren't in too much of a hurry as the UK decided to change it's immigration so we won't be affording the move over like we originally planned.

QUOTE (playnice @ Sep 26 2008, 06:07 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Can the embassy that is doing the interview request the police clearance certificate if the police have delayed giving this for months?
Who has jurisdiction or authority to give the police department a gentle "push" in processing this paper in a timely manner?
Can the police dept. actually stall this visa process by their improper handling of this paper??????.....Does the usc or beneficiary have
any rights to have this paper done in a timely fashion???.... mad.gif

Yes they do require it. I guess each country is different because I got mine the same day.

Are you sure guys! I thought you have to get another type of visa on top of the one you already have to go to school. Isn't that why they ask you if you are going to go to school. I could be wrong but that is what i was told.

US Citizenship General DiscussionQuestion about welfare and naturalization
IT DEPENDS, I WENT THROUGHT THE WHOLE FIANCEE VISA AND WITH THAT MY SPONSOR HAD TO SIGN AN AFFIDAVIT OF SUPPORT FOR AT LEAST 3 YEARS.
IF I WERE TO GO ON WELFARE DURING THE 3 YEARS THAT I WAS HERE HE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE TO PAYING BACK THE STATE FOR MY BENEFITS. THEY DON'T WANT PEOPLE TO COME HERE AND USE BENEFITS. FOR EXAMPLE: MY IN PA IF MY HUSBAND WERE TO FILE FOR FOOD STAMPS HE WOULD FILE FOR HIMSELF AND HOW EVERYMAY DEPENDENTS. HE WOULD HAVE TO PAY BACK MY PORTION TO THE STATE.

My name is Kerri I am a Canadian with my green card since 2009 and married to us citizen since 2008. I am considering getting my citizenship here but not sure. I have many questions like:

Can I have dual citizenship?

If so, what do I have to do to let Canada know?

Fellow canadians gone thourgh this are there any tax implications if I have dual?

Would I have to pay taxes in both countries?

I just want to make sure I do my research before hand as I am not willing to give up my citizenship.
