CanadaI'm back and approved
Hi Everyone! Well I had my interview yesterday and was APPROVED!!!!! YEAH!!! SO EXCITED!

Ok so here is my review ....

Arrived in Montreal on Monday night, stayed at the Hilton which is right across the street from the train station (I took the train in and my fiance drove and met me). We walked to the Consulate that night to find it and time it! Then went for dinner!

Day of the interview ... arrived outside at around 6:50am! My fiance wasn't too happy about being there that early but it worked out, I was second to be interviewed (even though we were the first ones there but oh well).

At 7:30am the doors opened, we were the first to go in and got letter A and went thru security. We only had the paperwork and our wallets on us so security was a total breeze. We were expecting worse than the airport but it was nothing. They were turning people away at the door though for having bags and cell phones on them. We could hear them arguing outside while we were going thru security.

After security we went downstairs to wait for the elevator man as we called him. Security told us that he would arrive at 7:45 to bring us up and at 7:45 on the dot he arrived. He called letters A - E and up we went on the elevator. Once we got to the 19th floor he brought us around to the counters and since I was letter A I went righ to the window and handed the lady my interview letter and was told to take a seat. After this we walked around all the windows and checked out the city. Everyone is right, what a beautiful view. We then watched the video of America that was playing on the TV and were laughing about the music that they were playing! "We are America" is what everyone was saying on the video, classic to be playing at the Consulate.

We waited for about 20 minutes or so and was called back to the original lady whereby I handed her my intent letter, affidavit of support, birth certificate and copy, police check, passport sized pictures (2 of them), medical (envelope only, they didn't care about the xray) and xpresspost envelope and I think thats it. On a side note there was a lot of people who a)didn't have an envelope or cool.gif bought the wrong size so everyone please remember to bring your envelope and the right size! It isn't a big deal if you don't, you can just leave and buy one and come back. After the lady took all my documents she gave me a slip of paper and told me to go and pay and after I pay to wait and she will call my name again. So we went and paid and sat and waited and continued to watch the "We are America" video. We waited about 30 minutes or so and then we were called back again to do my fingerprinting! The lady then told me to sit and wait and it shouldn't be long and I will be called in for my interview to either room 7 or 8.

We waited another 30 minutes or so and was called to room 7. When we entered the room (if you even want to call it that I think I will call it a closet!) the lady was so excited to see that we were both there. I would highly recommend if your fiance can swing it to join you for your interview, the lady was so impressed that he was there. She asked us if we were nervous and we both said yes, she laughed and said it was nothing to worry about. Then we both had to swear under oath. She then proceeded to talk to my fiance for about 5 minutes about hockey! (he used to play minor professional hockey and she is a huge hockey fanatic!). After they talked hockey we got down to the interview. She talked to Scott a bit about his work. Then she asked if I was going to do the same thing I do here and I told her I would like to. She then asked how we met and we told her. She asked if it was love at first sight, I told her it was once Scott took off his cowboy hat and we all laughed, she then asked Scott where the cowboy hat is now and he said in the closet collecting dust! She then asked how we kept in contact over the years. She asked how Scott proposed to me and then asked to look at the ring. Then she said to me, ok remember you are under oath, have you ever been arrested or charged and I said no. Then she asked if I was in good health and if Scott had medical coverage that would cover me. She then asked when we planned on getting married and we told her July 25! She was like wow that is soon and we explained why. She then said that she will be approving my visa today (I wanted to jump through the glass to hug her!). She said that she will have the visa mailed out tomorrow (which is today!) and hopefully I will have it soon. (I keep checking canada post but it isn't there yet so I am assuming it hasn't been mailed). After that she just explained what the package will look like and what to do with it at the border and what to do when I move there. And that was it. We walked about all smiles and went back to our hotel!

Just to finish about my trip to Montreal. Well my train was scheduled to leave at 5pm, so Scott left and I arrived at the train station at 4:30 only to find out that there was a train de-railment in Brockville and we were being BUSED! back. So the bus arrived at around 6:30 and I didn't get home till 1:30am! I was stuck on a bus back from Montreal for 7 hours! When something good happens, something bad always happens!

So that is my review. We are really hoping to have my visa by Friday (the xpresspost envelope I purchased was overnight) and if I do I will be moving on Monday! AHHHHHHH!!

Good luck to everyone who has there interviews coming up.

CanadaAffidavit of support
I just had my interview on Tuesday, I had the Affidavit of Support notarized and I think one of my fiance's job letters was also notarized. I gave them the originals which included the Affidavit of Support (notarized), job letters (one was notarized), income tax returns and paystubs and I kept a copy for myself. That was sufficient as I was approved! I had my interview in Montreal.

CanadaWhen flying
When me and my fiance got engaged I was living with one of my friends in an apartment. After we got engaged I moved back home to save money and my fiance came up and rented a uhaul and took everything that was in my apartment (bed, couches, washer/dryer, tv etc) back to Connecticut with him. He did not get hassled at all at the border and didn't have any problems.

CanadaI made it!
Hi guys!

Well my Visa did arrive on Friday as soon as I got home from work! It was updated on the canada post website so I called my fiance Friday morning and he came up Friday night. We spent all weekend packing and saying good bye (or I have been calling it see you later) to my friends and family. We left Monday morning and I arrived in Connecticut yesterday at 4:30pm.

We crossed at Queenston-Lewiston. When I pulled up to the border I handed the guy my passport and said I was here to activate my K1 visa. The guy said ok and started to do his paperwork. When he handed me the slip he told me it wasn't too busy in there and shouldn't take very long at all. He told me to pull my car over and that was it. I told him that my fiance was behind me with all of my stuff and he said ok. When my fiance pulled up the guy verified he was with me and that was it and told him to pull the van over to where my car was parked. They did not look in our vehicles at all! We made a huge list of everything that was in the van and they didn't even look!!!

When we went into the office the lady called my name and I gave her the huge DO NOT OPEN envelope and she told me to take a seat as they have to go thru the file. A couple of minutes later a guy called my name and he said that he was just processing the file. He asked when the wedding was and he told him hopefully Friday and he laughed and asked my fiance if he was getting cold feet! We laughed and joked around for a bit, the guy said he couldn't believe all the stuff you have to submit and looked thru our pictures, he was laughing at a picture of my fiance when he had long hair! He said it should only take a couple more minutes and told us to have a seat. A couple of minutes later we were called back up and he handed me my visa with the little white piece of paper in it. I asked about the employment stamp and he said I would have to apply for an EAD. Back to that, when I was looking at the DO NOT OPEN envelope there was a sheet of paper on it that said we had to apply for the EAD in order to work so I have no idea anymore what the deal is. Our lawyer told me that with the K1 visa you can work but to ask for the stamp if felt more comfortable seeing it in print.

So that was my border experience, it took us maybe 20 minutes top!

When we arrived in Connecticut we went right down to the Town Hall for our marriage certificate. We could've have our ceremony right then and there but we decided to have it on Friday at 3pm in the little gazebo beside the Town Hall! It will just be Scott and I as .... my little secret is being revealed .... we had a symbolic ceremony in Dominican Republic on April 15 in front of 30 of our friends and family so this ceremony on Friday is just to legalize the whole thing.

Well I wish everyone good luck with their interviews coming up and I will continue to be on visa journey everyday as it is my obsession and I will now need help with the next stage in the process!

CanadaK-1 Visa
I didn't get either stamp, employment authorized or unauthorized however when I spoke to my lawyer right after I got settled she advised me that they should've stamped me employment authorized. She is now in the process of getting a hold of a friend of her's at a nearby airport to make an appointment with me to go and have him stamp my form employment authorized. According to her I need it. So I have no idea. She told me that I might have a problem obtaining a SSN without the stamp so I"m confused.

Do you have a photo sharing account on-line? A lot of people here use photobucket. You can upload your pictures from your computer on-line and then copy them here. If you don't have an account, it would be a great idea to have one. Let me know if you need further instructions.

I don't know how to get picture off the camera. I know to plug the cord into the camera and it starts doing it on it's own but I don't know how to put those pictures into a file.

They probably download to a file on your computer if it's "doing it on it's own". Look for a file, maybe dated, I doubt it would be named, in your "documents folder, subfolder Pictures". If they're in there, you can do as I suggested above and get a photo sharing account. See if they are in that folder.

I don't have a photo sharing account however all my pictures our on my computer. When I tried to upload them it kept saying I didn't pick a file to upload. So confused!

Wow, really? Our drive is like 9 hours and ours came to $725. sad.gif Add gas and I figure we're looking at at least a grand.

ugh!

I don't have very much stuff so we can get away with the smallest vehicle available. I'm figuring with gas it's going to be closer to $700 though, probably will end up being more. What does it mean when km are including? It says that 834 or something km included. Its only like 720 to get down there.

They will calculate how many kms it will take to get to your destination and will usually add some extra kms in there for you so you don't go over. You also have to figure what the kms are from the uhaul place to your place and from your destination to the drop off place because that may add up to the extra kms.

Southern Canadian and Anxiously Waiting -

I called on Monday and the lady I spoke to said everything had been received and looked good wacko.gif but that we were just in the stack awaiting an interview date. I'm not sure how they do it because, as you guys said, there are some folks who sent their packets in after others, yet already have their interviews. I think you can drive yourself crazy trying to figure it out!

I'm going to limit myself to calling each Monday, and pray that the interview falls during one of my trips to Canada so I don't have to buy another plane ticket and take more time off work than I already do!

I am driving myself crazy well actually my fiance is driving me crazy, everyday he is like "are you going to call? please call". I am going to limit myself to every Friday afternoon!

I believe it's 5pm Eastern Time

Hey!!

Still waiting for an interview date.. Anyone else?!?!

I call everyday and everytime they say no, my hopes start to go down and down. I knowww that I'll get a date soon but I would love to know so that I can start planning stuff like a move date and wedding date! (My family keeps bugging me cuz they need to book off work so that they can come to the wedding)

Anyways, Part of me wants to wait a little before I call again for the fear of hearing them say no interview date yet but at the same time.. I would hate to have a date given and not know.

Soonnn.. I can feel it.. but how soon is the question? lol

I totally feel your pain. Mind you I haven't been eligible as long as you have but I am so anxious. I hold my self back from calling everyday. I am going to call this afternoon but I just have a bad feeling that I won't have an interview. When I called DOS a couple of weeks ago they told me that they sit down one day a month (can be a different day each month) and book the interviews for the next month. So hopefully they will have those dates soon! What I don't understand is that some people get interview dates before others when they submitted their package 3 after people who don't have a date (if that made any sense!). There are still a lot of people ahead of me who don't have dates so I don't know. I don't even care when the interview is I just want to know the date!!!! AHHHHHH! (I guess this should've gone in the VENT! sorry!)

QUOTE (ozone_1974 @ May 25 2008, 02:39 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hello everyone happy.gif ,

My name is Nicolas and I am a Canadian citizen living in Montreal, my girlfriend is American and live in Florida.
We met online 2 years ago, and after 2 years of traveling (me to USA and her to Canada to spend time together and meet each other's family), Chat sessions every day, phone calls every day, we finally decided to get married and live together, (in United States, so I would move there permanently) biggrin.gif
We searched online for documentation on the procedures to follow, but all we can find online is rather "not clear" to us and we really want to do it right the first time yes.gif . Seems that our best option would be via a K1 Visa from what we've read.
It would be sooooooooooooooo appreciated if you could help us clarifying the procedures to follow, delays for procedures and such... yes.gif

Also, just a quick question : from what we gathered online, it states that she would have to be able to support me at 150% or something like that. But we are wondering what exactly do they mean by that huh.gif ? .. She have a job and live in an appartment right now and that's where I would move so she would basically provide a roof over our heads during the time for me to find a job in United States .. we mean, how do they calculate that and what is the 150% based on ?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help biggrin.gif
Best regards
Nicolas

PS: Big Big thanks to cattattude for pointing me out the Canadians forums and the 2008 Poverty Guidelines wink.gif

CanadaHomesick
Like everyone else I have my good days and bad days. I have been fortunate that since I have moved here (end of July) I have had my Mom, sister, niece and best friend come for visits so I have been busy but I felt even more homesick after they left! The one thing I miss and I know will come in time is the confidence I had back home driving around and knowing how to get around. I went from living in a sub-division with my neighbours a rock throw away to living in the middle of nowhere (I am in CT now). I only know my husbands friends (but he hasn't even lived in CT that long so he only has a handful of friends) and I miss having friends around all the time and going out and socializing! I am hoping that once I start working I will be able to meet more people and get my socializing fix! I also think that the fact that we know we can't go home to visit makes it harder, I am hoping once I get my AP and go home I will be good for a little bit. Theres my vent for now!
