immigration equality

I went to this website and I thank-you for giving it to us. In fact, I want to thank all of you who have posted information on social security, immigration, gay-rights, etc. as well as those who have wished us well.

I will continue to check responses and updates. I'm sure we need to see an immigration lawyer as well. I will keep you all posted on our battle. I sure hope we find a way to climb this enormous mountain.

Thank-you all again so much....... ((( hugs )))

Best of luck to you! rose.gif

I am retired and don't want to lose my social security and / or pension.

From Social Security's website:

Question:

I am a US citizen but plan to live overseas. Can I collect Social Security benefits in a foreign country?

Answer:

If you are a U.S. citizen, you may receive your Social Security payments outside the U.S. as long as you are eligible for them. Regardless of your citizenship, there are certain countries where we are not allowed to send payments. For more information, please see Your Payments While You Are Outside The United States, Publication No. 05-10137, for a list of countries where we are not allowed to send payments.

If you are planning to be outside the United States for six consecutive calendar months or more, you can find out if you can receive your Social Security payment by using the Payments Abroad Screening Tool.

Thanks! Here are pictures before I finished decorating everything. I will get those put up as well. The stone wall plaster is what took forever. Took three months (doing weekends only) to get the entire bathroom walls done! But it was worth it. Check out the before, then the afters. Oh, my house is only about 25 years old.

Later I will send pics with the italian decor in place. Also did my kitchen (except the counters), I did that room in a french country look. All is done now except the counters, which I won't do myself....

I've been living in our apartment for 3 years and still have not decorated it. :\ After moving 14 times in three and a half years, I'm still in the habit of keeping most stuff boxed up. I have SO much awesome stuff to put up one of these days, though! It'll probably wait until later since Réjean and I are planning on renting a house once our financial situation gets more stable and I'm able to go back to work.

Edited to say "our" apartment instead of "my" apartment... I'm still not used to this yet!

CanadaOrdering a gift from the USA and having it delivered to Canada...
Hi, everyone. Réjean and I want to place an order online for a Christmas gift to be mailed to his brother's place in Québec City for our 3-year-old nephew. I don't know if it's possible for us to do that or not. We really don't want to get a gift here and mail it up there. Shipping would be expensive, plus we're worried about customs tacking on an additional fee to be paid when it's delivered (this happened to Réjean when I mailed him a gift when he still lived in Montréal). Does anyone have any ideas on how to go about this, what websites to order off of, etc.?

Thanks for your help!

Hey, everyone, it's been a while again. I don't post here much anymore since I'm so exhausted from work and health issues.

Réjean and I are moving! The neighbor in the duplex that our best friends live in moved out suddenly, and they asked us if we'd consider taking it. We applied for it, got approved, and we put the deposit down last night! I'm excited but am having some mild panic attacks over it for some reason. The pros are wonderful... it's a 2-bedroom so I can have an office for my work-at-home job, we'll have a yard, we'll live by our best friends (they were the best man and maid of honor at our wedding!), we won't have to deal with screaming neighbor kids anymore, the rent itself is $65 less than we're paying now (although we will be paying gas and water now)... so lots of perks... I guess it's just the stress of moving that's getting to me and the knowledge that this move is going to put me into an awful lot of pain. Hiring a moving company is not an option due to us barely having enough money the way it is (someday I'll explain why in the Vent thread).

So I'm happy, yet I'm freaking out. This is a rather odd sensation.

A follow up to my week:

After the race of no sleep and the hours that did not go by quickly enough, we were supposed to go and pick up the doggie from the "farm" (my step-mom-in-laws, phew!) and bring him home on the weekend. He had been there for about 2 weeks.

Okay you all know I do not have love affairs with doggies, only kitties...any kitty.
However, this big smelly, shedding, drooling, loveable, dancing, smiling being was a good companion at times.
Except for my incessant cleaning of where he had been, he was funny and interesting.

He was diagnosed with cancer and extremely quickly degraded.
We went and had him put down on Saturday at the local small town vet.

This must have been my partner's most challenging decision in his life.
The tears!!

The doggy had been so lethargic and not eating or drinking for a few days and when we arrived late Friday night, he still lifted his had and walked a little and wagged his tail. The next morning i even got him to go outside as the other 2 dogs that live there ran around and around us.
I asked him to look for my FIL in the playground where he was going and to hang out with him.

It has been a tough go this year - all outside of me personally - and yet emotional suffering is never to be minimized.

Oh to not be such a sensitive soul.

Then again who would/could I be?

RIP Baron aka Puppy Wuppy.

And me, well, I am so run down, that I got sick...so much for high energy for my trip to BC tomorrow.
I need to borrow some.
Hee, hee.

Please keep your fingers crossed for me, everyone...

I just went to a job interview today. It would be doing conference calls from home for about 20-25 hours a week with good pay. It's what I've wanted to do for a long time now and is perfect for what I'm needing.

The interview itself went well, but I had a small catastrophe where my home printer wouldn't print my résumé, so I had to e-mail it to the interviewer. He didn't look at it during the interview, so I'm worried about what he's going to think when he sees the long list of jobs that I've had within the past 7 years. He did say that attendance and staying at the company for at least a year if not more is very important, and I told him that wouldn't be a problem, but still... I'm scared that might blow my chances.

I won't know if I'm hired or not until next Tuesday or so... these next few days are going to be stressful...

I am so annoyed right now. The Social Security office won't let Réjean file for a replacement Social Security card without his actual green card. They won't accept his I-551 stamp. I have heard reports of it taking months to receive a new green card. How the heck is he supposed to prove that he's eligible to work? Will his I-551 stamp and his drivers license suffice? At least we were finally able to get THAT replaced!

I called the Social Security Administration's customer service line and talked to a really rude lady. She also said that he can't file for his replacement SS card until he gets his actual green card. Then why the #### does this document on Social Security's website say "Accept as valid a temporary I-551 stamp with a future expiration date"?!

I don't have the energy to deal with this bullsh*t.
NecroticaFemaleCanada2009-02-18 16:35:00
CanadaThe Vent
Don't ever lose your green card. Seriously. I know no one intends to, but still... just... don't do it.

I don't care what the #### USCIS says about carrying your green card on you at all times. If they're going to charge $370 for a replacement green card, then we are NOT carrying it on us at all times and they can kiss my white American @ss if they have a problem with it. Réjean will carry a photocopy of his green card with him at all times and if it is ever needed, then and ONLY then will we show the actual card. End of f*cking story.

Réjean just got laid off from his job today.

We have been sh*t on REPEATEDLY ever since the start of the year, and we're only 10 days into it. Something's got to give. Seriously; this is getting RIDICULOUS.
NecroticaFemaleCanada2009-01-10 01:48:00
CanadaThe Vent
I've decided to tell my congressman about our green card situation. It probably won't do any good, but it is utterly ridiculous that a replacement green card is $390 for someone who had their card lost or stolen, especially when it is to be carried with you at all times and also when it's only a conditional one! There is no reason whatsoever to charge such an extortionate amount. Even a passport is less than $100 to replace!

Without the green card or I-551 stamp, he can't get a replacement drivers license. That alone puts us in an awful situation. The field office won't give him the stamp until we prove that we filed for the replacement green card. There is no way whatsoever of getting out of the fee unless we want to try for the fee waiver program, which I doubt we qualify for, plus with me being my husband's sponsor, I fear that attempting to get the fee waived will get us in trouble since I no longer make 150% of the poverty level or whatever it is that I'm supposed to be bringing in. I have no idea how this will affect us once we remove conditions in November if I don't manage to pick up more hours or get another job.

I'm doing better than I was, but I still feel so sick over this. It's such an injustice after already paying $170 for the initial petition, $200 medical, $100 visa fee at the Consulate, and $1,010 green card/EAD/AP fee.

I'm sorry... I shouldn't have added that last part to my post. It was one of those few moments where I had come completely unglued.

Several years ago, I was in a similar situation..... no health insurance, a mountain of bills, and to top it off, a ruptured eardrum. I was lucky that I was assigned to this doctor at the emergency room. He initially prescribed me a litany of medications. After telling him that I could not afford all of them, he gave me a bit of advise. First he told me (as Flames advised) to always ask for the generic version, and he told me you can always ask the doctor if they have any sample packages. I got a bag full of sample packages and was very grateful for it. good.gif

The medication I got was the generic; I insisted on it. The $50 was the office visit fee.

I know they canbe hard to find, but have you been able to locate any free clinics? My Nursing program offers a free clinical, staffed by student nurses and fully qualified Nurse Practitioners. Ya , u get bombarded with questions, lol, but its free!! Check out your local universities to see if they have a Nursing or physicians program and if they offer a free, or reduced fee clinical. Or play around with Google, and see if you can locate a clinic that way! They tend to not be very well advertised, so it can take some poking around. What city do you reside in. I could email one of my instructors and see if she knows of any in your area.

No, you were not incorrect in stating 1800-suicide sucks, lol There are some crappy counselors! I'm sure they mean well, but just can't communicate that well. If they are not helping, let them know, and more than likely they can get some one else, or call another service!! Or PM me, i may not have anything wise, but sometimes, just writing stuff down helps! Some suggest to write things down, and throw it in the garbage, keeping stuff bottled up may not help.

Thanks, Flames. I've been to about 15 counselors in my life (yeah, I'm pretty screwed-up in the head; I admit it freely), but I've only found two that I actually felt could help me. Neither of which I could see for long due to my crappy circumstances each time. I've given up at this point.

There are those types of clinics here, but from what I understand they are extremely difficult to get into (have to wake up very early and basically flood the phone line to try and get an appointment; it's like calling a radio station to try to be the #th caller to win a prize). With the fatigue I have to deal with plus the bronchitis on top of it, I'm sorry, but I just don't have the energy to fight like that. Plus they'd probably deny me anyway simply because my husband alone earns something like 200% of the poverty level, even though our bills (and his carefree spending habit; a whole 'nother rant) eat it all up.
