I think they will be able to give you such a letter, plus you can notarize a statement made by you about why the fathers name is not on the birth certificate. Add some evidence about the relationship between your daughter and your husband, pictures, cards, letters anything. Good luck!

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresSocial security number?????

The consulate is State Department, the Social Security Admin. issues social security numbers. You have to apply once you get here or else chack the box on the DS-230 and hope USCIS sends that to SSA. My wife arrived a month ago, got her green card 2 weeks ago but we had to go to a local SS office and apply for her card which arrived yesterday.

Yup, here is your answer

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresQuick Question about the Interview

Always reach the place 2 hours before the interview. Infact though the time given for my interview was 8:30 am, i was asked to be there an hour or so in advance..I went to the consulate the day before my interview to be sure of the location since it was not in the city i lived and was told by the security guard to reach well before time.

Further, be in semi formal or formal wear, that reflects your sincerity towards the matter.

Hope this would help!!

Dress for success. Generally, its good to arrive early but check on the recommended procedure for arrival time in the Consulate forum.

Thanks for the reply...i will start ironing a shirt tonight, even though the interview isnt till the 12th of june....i've lost soooooooo much hair over this visa application it's unbelieveable!

thanks again all.

the sealed envelope is the one you will get from the embassy with your visa. not from your medical.
That sealed envelope you have to turn in at your POE.

Middle East and North AfricaPregnancy and filing question
I found this: (it's from the Paraguay embassy site because that was the first one that came up on google :):

http://paraguay.usem...rth_abroad.html

Birth Abroad
When Americans have a baby abroad, they should file for a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (the equivalent of a U.S. Birth Certificate) at the Embassy as soon as possible to register the child’s birth with the U.S. Government and to obtain a U.S. Passport for the child.

WARNING: False statements made knowingly and willfully in passport applications, affidavits or other supporting documents are punishable by fine and/or imprisonment under the provisions of 18 USC 1001 and/or 18 USC 1542.

Which children are born American?
Children born outside of the U.S or its outlying possessions are U.S. citizens by law when:

- Both parents are Americans and one parent has resided in the U.S. or its outlying possessions prior to the child’s birth.

- The parents are married and one parent is a citizen and another an alien, IF the citizen parent was physically present in the U.S. for a period of five years, two of which occurred after the age of 14, and the child was born after 02.07 E.S.T. on November 14, 1986; or ten years, five of which occurred after the age of 14, if the child was born before 02.07 E.S.T. on November 14, 1986

- The child was born to an unmarried American citizen mother who has lived in the United States for at least one continuous year prior to the child’s birth.

In all of these cases, the physical presence of the American parent(s) in the United States prior to the child’s birth must be documented.

If your child was born under the above circumstances, he or she may be eligible for registration.

If the child’s father is American, the mother is an alien and the parents are not married the child must be legitimized by the biological father before the child’s 18th birthday. Documentation of this official and legal recognition must be provided, as well as an affidavit of paternity and a written agreement to provide financial support until the child’s 18th birthday. DNA testing may also be required. In such cases, we need all documents available in order to assist you.

Special note on adoptees: Occasionally, American citizens try to register the birth of adopted babies with the Embassy and attempt to obtain citizenship for the child in this way. Babies of other parents born and adopted abroad by American citizens are not born Americans and are not qualified for American passports. They must travel to the U.S. on immigrant visas. It is illegal to attempt to obtain U.S. passports by fraud.

Middle East and North AfricaThings to remember to tell your SO when they arrive

Lots of people bring bags to the grocery store, it's about reusing and conserving, not about being German.

I noticed a lot more people though brought bags to the grocery store in Italy since they charged like $0.05 per bag. It was a good incentive for people to reuse.

In Germany they charge at least 0.15€, usually even more (0.25€).

I reuse the bags in the US too, not so much for shopping but as garbage bags.

why are the toilets in germany so much bigger?

german engineering :P

I don't know. :)

I don't think they are a lot bigger- they are different though.

There's not so much water in it and it doesn't swirl in nice little rounds when you flush :D

one more thing to add to the list:

tipping in restaurants! I don't know how it is in MENA countries, but the 15-20% that are expected in the US feel a LOT to me. I still have to get used to that. (in Germany, it's maybe 5-10% and very often people don't tip at all)

Middle East and North AfricaThursday!
Why would it matter?

I mean, they now most about us anyway, and if they match their files to some posts here- what new would they learn?
That people are waiting for their visas?

And I seriously doubt that the staff at USCIS has nothing better to do than scanning the hundreds of immigration forums that exist to find specific posts...
Maybe- if they suspect fraud, but even then- I can't imagine that it happens on a regular basis.

I CAN, however, imagine that some IOs read on immigration forums. To see what's happening. Maybe to find fraud.

I can hear you...

The only thing that's holding me from being with my husband is my school in Germany- and it's only another 3 months... but loooong three months those are.

When I returned from Seattle after Christmas, it took me a week to get back to normal, I just felt like half of me was missing.

Now, back in daily life, it's gotten better- being busy helps a lot.

However, usually on the weekends I have moments like the ones you described- and what (sometimes) helps a little is the combination of:

lavender oil (calms the nerves and makes tired)
thinking of something specific in great detail. We have our wedding reception to prepare for this summer and I think about it and plan it in every detail- the location, how we'll set up things, the food we'll offer, the favors- every little thing.

Usually this gives me something to look forward to and in combination with the lavender oil I fall asleep with a better mood sooner than later.

Hope you'll have a quick journey!

Middle East and North AfricaFirst name changes

No one said that Christine is a "negative" name. It's just not traditionally "Islamic".

Sorry if that came across the wrong way, I was referring to the posts quoted below.

I was trying to think of a name with a possible negative connotation and couldn't think of any and that's why I asked.

A muslim name does not have to be arabic. I was taught that you can have any name you wish as long as it doesn't have negative connotations against Islam. For example, if you had the name Christine, you'd probably want to change it.

Just curious- where's the negative connotation against Islam in the name Christine?

Because it stems from the word "Christ" or "Christian"?

Why would that be considered negative towards Islam?

Christine is the female version of Christian which is the follower of Christ.

sophyieFemaleGermany2007-02-01 17:33:00
Middle East and North AfricaFirst name changes

Yes, because Jesus (pbuh) is a prophet of Allah although it's not terribly common name in the MENA. The name, Christine, has no religious significance (sp) in Islam.

Thanks.

So what other names would be considered as being negative towards Islam and therefore would be "worth" changing?
sophyieFemaleGermany2007-02-01 16:40:00
Middle East and North AfricaFirst name changes

Names of the prophets are very popular in Islamic cultures. Of course Muhammad is the most common. But you will also often see Ibrahim, Ismail, Yacub, Yusuf, Musa, Suleiman, Dawood, Issa (Abraham, Ishmael, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Solomon, David, Jesus) and many more. One of my husband's brothers is named Izhaq (Isaac.)

So Jesus would be ok? And Christine not?

Middle East and North AfricaI am pissed off!^&*@%

You won't win everyone over. Some people are very happy with the paradigms they have and won't change them to suit anyone. But over time, others will find their eyes opened to WHY you love your man. Its hard to be thick skinned but hold onto what you KNOW and leave others to their opinions.

Maybe this is cynical of me, but personally I don't think I would bother to give others the benefit of time to open their eyes if they made it clear in the beginning that they did not trust my choice. I think I would cut them out. Of course, this could just be a whole lot of talk on my part, since fortunately I did not have to deal with negativity about my relationship.

Don't you think it might very often be plain fear of the "unknown"?
Different culture, different language- never met before... plus- their loved one (daughter, sister, cousin...) will marry or is already married to someone they don't know anything about!

I think a lot of people are simply afraid of what they don't know and instead of being curious, they oppose it.

I'd hope that given time that would change in most of the cases...

the one adapter/transformer I had in Germany was like 15 lbs. am I goign to need something like that again if I have something of lower voltage?

That would be the transformer (and a big one).

To find out what exactly you'll need do the following: decide on what you want to take.

Take each of the appliances that you want to take and read the lable on it, it's really small print but will tell you all you need to know.

Usually the lable is located on the "boxy" thing that is somewhere between your appliance and the plug.

Read it and it will either say something like 110V~230V or 110V only.

If it says 110V~230V it is good to go in Morocco, you just need a little adaptor thing to make the plugs fit.

If it says 110V only (usually with hairdryers, curlers...) you will need a transformer, which will transform the 230/220V down to 110V.

As I said before, USUALLY the cellphone/laptop/cam charger things will go from 110V~230V, so are good to go.

Ok so I have to get an adapter? do the plugs there look the same as here? I had that problem while I was in Germany. different plug style. Anyway, I think I will need it for 3 things, my cell, my camera battery and my camcorder battery. I don't think I will bring any thing else, except my iPod, but I think I can just use their comp to charge it right? Their USBs are the same right? I mean they are called universal and all.

AFAIK Morocco has the same style plugs like Germany, 2 round things. (don't know the name, sorry)

That's why those world travel adapter are great, the usually provide different plugs for different countries!

Usually, most chargers (cell, cam and camcorder) work on the whole range 110V~220V. However, make sure (it says on them)- if they are, you won't need a transformer, just an adaptor to make the plug fit.

Yes! You will need adapters for your electric appliances like blow dryers. I was surprised at how difficult they were to find in Rabat, so if you can find them here, take some with you.

Not only an adaptor but also a transformer that transforms the 220V down to 110V for your electrical appliances.

This really IS a good news day! Or at least a "better news than the last couple of days"- day.

We received the employer's letter needed for the affidavid of support today (and I thought we'd never get it, had been waiting for weeks!) and also I got an appointment for an important exam for me to finish school, where I wasn't sure I'd be able to get one before Christmas!
