Are you going to the beach this weekend krikit, which one!?

I know! I laughed at that too. laughing.gif We used to work together. We had so much fun. When I left, she took early retirement. Said she went from looking forward to going into work each day to hating going into work each day. (She used to report to me.) When she and her husband came to visit last September her husband gave me heck for the loss of income. lol

Anyhooooo..... I digress. Hubby had asked me to go to the beach for the weekend. Sarasota or Bradenton area (Siesta Key/Anna Maria Island). At first I said yes, but then I changed my mind. We've just gotten back and I'm still catching up on everything that was neglected and/or accumulated while we had our visitors. It's our second first wedding anniversary tomorrow. (Yes, Groundhog Day.) So I think he was trying to make up for forgetting our first first wedding anniversary. But I still have time to change my mind back. It's a woman's prerogative, you know. wink.gif

This Ontario cam site is great! I love being able to see home.

I don't miss shoveling - that WAS a funny account of "catapulting" the grass lol

The bright side is pretty bright - the option to beach is a good one to have smile.gif

Cool, a reason to bring this up. Celica: American, "sell-la-cah"; Canadian "sah-leak-a". I used to own one and when it came up in conversation, my US husband had a wonderfully (annoying) holler at the way i pronounced it.

My husband is really into cars and bikes so makes and models actually come up quite a bit. And when they do, he laughs his a$$ off at me. To avoid being teased, I sometimes try and remember how to say it in American but it never works out.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresFlights from Manila

I just re-read my post and obviously I don't proof read what I write. It should read:

You can buy the ticket here it's but you can save some money by having your fiancee purchase it in the Philippines. Claudeth got hers for about $150 less that my agent could get it for and over $200 less than all the cheap web sites I looked at. Good Luck

Hey Jas,

My fiance Lorna wants to go directly to the airline and I think I heard that its better to go with a travel agent in Manila Area because they know about the promotions? Did your wife go to travel agent or go direct?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresFlights from Manila

I do realize that buying the ticket in the Philippines is less expensive. But if one of your major goals is to sit together on the same flight coming to the U.S., then I think it's best to pay the extra and purchase the tickets at the same time. I have often seen couples separated on the flight because they saved a few dollars booking the flight separately. The airlines are consolidating flights to save money and most of these flights are regularly fully or over booked. It is often not possible to arrive at the airport and get seat assignments together. I have traded my assigned seat so that a family could sit together on my last 2 flights home. They had hoped to get seating together at check-in too, but couldn't. If your overriding goal is to save money, then you can probably save a little by buying your ticket there. If your goal is to be together on the same flight, pay a little extra and book the flights together.

Yes, John and Marlene,
If your goal is to sit together it will cost much more I think. Lorna really wanted me to come to go to interview with her and do that but I just have traveled so much in last year. I took six trips to see her!!!! whew!!!! But really, Iam tempted to go back around the interview time...LOL...

Hey Trey,

Iam excited for you and your Love! Just wanted to tell you I think the processing times at manila are around four months now once your package arrives in manila. Yes, I think a travel agent over there is the best way to go. You can get cheaper deals over there..I think...

Visa delievery is good right now , my fiance and also my friends interviewed on feb 9 and both recieved their visa on feb 15 , then she got her packet { appointment letter } on feb 17 , this was a cebu delievery area for both

Thanks Jer,

I guess there are no guarantees on getting that visa; but Iam going to still make my reservation and go for it. Worse case is that she flies a few days later. Best case is that she is here 14 days after interview!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresFlights from Manila

Hi William & Andromeda,

I just started reading these threads a few days ago and I think I understand enough to give some input. You really pose a pertinent question and I am glad your asking. Basically, I have traveled six times to Philippines six times in last year. I found China Airlines to be the most reasonable. Iam going to send my fiance money to get the ticket in Manila. China air policy is that you can make a reservation and it needs to be paid for in two weeks. Our plan is to make a reservation that needs to be paid for the day after the interview. As long as we have the pink ticket from the consulate and they take her passport, we are going to pay for the ticket the following day. This means she will be able to fly 13 days after the interview. We felt that to an acceptable amount of time. If there is a problem to get the visa and passport, china airlines charges a 75.00 rebooking fee. But the problem here is that it might take two to three weeks to get a ticket.

The 'season' for air travel in Philippines starts in April so ticket prices go up about three to four hundred dollars on china airlines. I have been paying around 950 dollars to fly from Fresno, California in low season around 1250 dollars in peak season. I have also been told its definitely cheaper to purchase tickets from a travel agent in Manila because the often have promotions.

Cathay Pacif Air is pretty good but costs more. I think this airline is easier to get a quicker ticket because alot of people travel china because its cheaper. Several of my friends who recently married got tickets on this airline, I did not ask how much they paid.

We booked tickets for about 2 weeks after the interview too. It took almost 3 weeks to get the visa delivered. Several of the people we were in contact with at that time had the same delivery delay. I ended up having to come back before Marlene and we had to rebook her flight.

Hi John & Marlene
What airline did you use? How long did it take her to rebook? What month of the year was it? Wow, thats long time to get the visa. What I have been seeing here on VJ in about five cases is that the visa took about five to seven days to arrive. So your right, perhaps 14 days wont even be enough!

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresNewbie with lots of questions! :)

I am 'assuming' (always a bit dodgy to do that I know, lol) that you will marry and he will then adjust status from his student visa?
Cos the K1 is for a foreign domiciled fiance (in which case you can't get married on April 29 because the visa is unlikely to be finalised before then) and the K3 for a foreign domiciled spouse (you can marry but then he has to leave the US) - ie - he would have to be OUT of the country in order for either of those to be applied for...
So Im thinking neither of those are what you need...

Yep, Jaylen a bit "dodgy" and people doing it all the time. You can read all about the uscis.gov immigration laws by going to forms and fees and exploring around. It seemed that if a person does 'happen' to marry while here, and become an 'immediate relative' they would be allowed to file an I 130 (Petition for alien relative) and an I 485 (adustment of status) "IF" when they were legally inspected at port of entry had no intention to 'immigrate'. So many people just say "we fell in love and married"....

( i was very very nervous because of that) The basic rituals at the entry and at the interview as well, the basic questions. Got back my originals. (marriage and birth certif). The consular even stated i was too honest and shouldn't do so much. (if he knew lol).

Before more questions, we, my hubby and I want to THANK FROM THE BOTTOM OF OUR HEART the old crew (because we were an antiquity on here by now) and new crew that helped us, the nasty and the nice ones, we learned a lot from every post and situations in order to be better prepared, especially, i believe all is mostly a psychological test; we are certainly not the same individuals...and i hope we are better ones now.

My question for now is: our 2nd year of marriage aniversary is in the near futur; i don't understand when we have to apply for the Permanent card. does it have to do with the 2nd year of marriage or 2nd year of Temp. Card that i believe if i understood well i'll get now.
Again, thank you so much, and in particular to Capt Ewok who conceived this little jewel of site but not of less help and gave us all the liberty to express ourselves even in the darkest moments rose.gif

CanadaA Question for the Canadians: Do you plan to become a citizen?
QUOTE (warlord @ Feb 11 2008, 08:32 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I voted yes, because I became a US Citizen last year. Right now I have both passports, however the US passport is good for 10 years, so will probably not re-apply for a Canadian one in the future and just keep the US one. It'll mean I'll have to declare myself American when going to visit Canada, but I do that now anyways, I just can't be bothered to go through the passport hassle with Canada again, plus not keen on taking 2 passports with me to the border.

And yes for those who want to know, Canada reconizes dual citizenship. The US just tollerates it, but you do not lose your Canadian one because you take on another nations. Germany and India and Peru for example do not allow dual citizenships, so those people actually have to renounce their homelands citizenship when they take on a US one. Canada does not. Hence you can claim at customs Dual when entering Canada, but you must declare yourself US if you come back to the US as dual isn't really reconized.

Many many good reasons to get US citizenship. Some happens after retierment, others allow you to work in any sector and any job (many are for USC only), security of resiendcy, no more having to do a AR-11 everytime you move, etc...

Congrats on becoming a Citizen!
Now that you put it that way, it would be advantageous to pursue citizenship.

I know dual is possible but I've heard the US frowns upon it. I had a friend in high school who had dual citizenship (he was born in the US and his mother is Canadian) and he was held up for hours at the US border when they saw that he was holding 2 passports. The officer actually told him that he was going to destroy one of them because carrying 2 was illegal. He got across with both passports intact and later found out the border official was dead wrong.

I guess I have a few years to decide smile.gif

You can just contact your insurance broker and ask for a bridge policy. Its mostly a major medical policy, high deductibles and low premiums, but unless you have major health needs, or see there is a potential for some medical expenses during this transition time it might be enough coverage for the time being. Most insurance agents (independents, state farm, all state, etc) should be able to offer you quotes.

As a Canadian, I'm completely overwhelmed by the health insurance system here and the more I look into it, the more infuriated I become. Co-pay, HMO, PPO... grrr... It all makes me dizzy. We have to find a "civilian" plan until my husband starts a new job that has a plan. We'll probably only need coverage for 6 to 8 months - after that he'll have it from his employer.

Do any well-seasoned Canadians or USC on here have any suggestions/ words of wisdom for finding an "idiots guide" to health insurance or resources to find a good plan for my husband and I?

Right. Amy Winehouse's visa never should have been denied because she is not coming permanently, FFS. On the other hand, were she not a celebrity, it never would have been overturned so quickly. Neither of those things is particularly fair in my opinion.

Ron and Sharon's visa never should have been denied because even though he IS immigrating (and therefore reaonably subject to stricter scrutiny than someone who is coming on a short-term basis), there is no valid reason for it being denied. And that is waaay not fair, and also ridiculous. Comparing their situation to Winehouse's may be an apples-and-oranges comparison (because she isn't immigrating), but think about all the people here who need tourist visas to visit their American fiances and are denied, or whose relatives can't attend their wedding because they can't get visas, or who are turned back at the border because of "insufficient evidence of ties to home country" just becuase they are self-employed. I doubt any of them will get those denials reversed in 48 hours.

For that matter, I'm guessing there are plenty people in this forum more deserving of a Grammy nomination than Amy Winehouse, but that's another matter.

PS: Ron rocks!

I was under the impression that it doesn't matter if you are immigrating or visiting you can not have drug convictions. A friend of my husband's is banned from the u.s. for having a drug conviction. He doesn't really care about visiting here all that much or else he would file a waiver. He was not immigrating, just picking up a friend who had flown into seattle. He did not have drugs on him but "looked" like a druggie. He went into secondary questioning where they found out he had a previous conviction (marijuana) and he is now banned from the U.S.

That's exactly what I was thinking. There have been a lot of responses to this post that are making a strong distinction between immigrants coming to the US and visitors. While obviously there are HUGE differences between these two groups (fingerprinting, background investigations, medical exams etc.) there is no distinction when it comes to having a history of drug charges.

Like kcmetzy said, any history of drug charges can be grounds for visa (entry) refusal or being banned from the US altogether - whether the person is coming to immigrate, go shopping for the day or perform at the Grammy awards. I've heard of loads of people (friends of friends) being completely banned from visiting the US because of drug charges (sometimes is the WAY distant past).

I really like Amy Winehouse and I think she's pretty talented... but I think it's pretty lame that she successfully appealed the visa refusal.. especially since she has just recently been so openly involved in drugs.

I don't know if your vet offers this but mine does and I wondered if it was a new thing vets are doing - it's a great idea.

If you have a dog that weighs more than 40lbs, he can be a blood donor and in exchange the vet offers one free annual wellness exam (including shots) and a discount on any medical services. It's a brilliant idea but I'm not sure all vets do it.

CanadaCanadian Health Care
CDAgirl, pretty much everything said so far is correct. I'm assuming from your avitar that you're from Ontario and the deal there is that if you are outside of Ontario for more than 6 months, you lose your OHIP coverage - that is, if you've notified Ontario of your move.

Technically however, if you have a mailing address (residence) in Canada your HealthCard is still valid until you officially give up your residence (notify the Ministry of Health that you are no longer a resident). My cousin, who's lived in the US for 8 months, had a new healthcard sent to her mother's house as that was her last address...

An acquaintance of mine was outside of Canada for 8-9 months of the year working as a researcher but still had a permanent residence in Toronto and paid taxes in Canada. Her healthcard remained valid.

Once you officially give up your residence in Ontario you can still return and re-apply for a healthcard with all of the required identification (Photo ID and proof of address) just like when you renew your healthcard - I know several people who've done this. It's not that difficult.

But if you give up your Healthcard, you have to pay for any medical treatments in Ontario (for example if you were to go back for a visit and wished to see your old family doctor)

CanadaHoneymoonies...
My parents went to Puerto Vallarta and they LOVED it. That says a lot 'cause my mom is very discerning when it comes to these things.

We got married in Vegas which was amazing and our honeymoon was a DREAM.

The day after the wedding we had brunch with everyone and then we drove to Grand Canyon for the sunset. We continued roadtripping - staying at KOA campgrounds in Amarillo Texas, Fort Smith Arkansas, Nashville Tennessee and finally got to Virginia. We stopped at the Cadillac Ranch and a bunch of cheesy attractions along the way. We bought a CB radio at a truckstop so we could talk to all the truckers on the way. It was an AMAZING honeymoon. The BEST.

It was a practical honeymoon 'cause we actually had to get to VA anyway so we made it into a honeymoon.

The United States definitely has the problem of folks scamming over the system by getting surgeries and then not paying, etc, but keep in mind he is not paying taxes at all. He may be paying for services and such, but in the end he broke the law just by staying, did it again by not paying taxes, and then brags about it. I really wish that people who are so selfish could somehow be forced into seeing that the world is so much bigger than the life they know. There's not a day that goes by that I'm not incredibly thankful that my wife is now in the same bed next to me, nice and safe, and that her family is now on their way to citizenship in Canada. I just feel he's slapping everyone in the face that struggles to do it the right way, then smiles and brags right after.

I totally get where you're coming from smile.gif

That guy is the most selfish butthole in the world, I can't believe anyone would find his story funny?

This kind of stuff TOTALLY pushes me to the worst kind of anger, and I have NO idea how anyone could joke about this.

Well I think some of the comments of the author are funny. This article didn't make me angry in the least. I don't feel responsible for this guy, i'm sure it works both ways, illegal Americans in Canada and Canadians in the U.S.. It is the way it is, probably happens in most border countries.

Oh I'm sure it does, and any American that is living illegally in Canada deserves the exact same treatment. While I admit that I am TOTALLY against illegal immigration and am quite biased with stories involving it, the guy could not be any more selfish. For those who risk everything to give their children a better life than they had, and do it legally, it's horrible to see him state that "he doesn't have much to lose."

Going over the border from the States to Canada with my wife's family was seriously the worst moment in my life. To see two parents so dedicated to their children that they are willing to uproot everything they've known to give them a better life is amazing, but to see the worry in their eyes as they're forced to live in a motel for a month while trying to find a way to support them is awful. This guy deserves to be forced to realize that his actions are garbage.

I can understand your frustration... I've seen it too - When I lived in Malta I used to often drive by the refugee camp where the boatloads of Africans were held and they were all fleeing deplorable conditions - they'd traveled weeks through desert and sea and all they wanted was to start a new life in the UK or the US. When I lived in Cyprus, the place was FULL of illegal Sri Lankan immigrants working as housekeepers. It's all very sad...

What he's doing is nothing compared to the thousands who illegally go to Canada to scam on healthcare and welfare benefits. There are third world illegals in almost every country! I just don't think it means we need to slam the hammer on people like this hippie.

That guy is the most selfish butthole in the world, I can't believe anyone would find his story funny? People from other countries are persecuted beyond belief and most don't manage to escape, but the few that do go through years of immigration ####### while this moron breaks the law. I wish they'd find him, jail him for the length of time he's been in the States illegally then charge him for the time he just spent in jail, and liquidate the company's assets that employs him into a public trust that helps refugees get off to a better start.

This kind of stuff TOTALLY pushes me to the worst kind of anger, and I have NO idea how anyone could joke about this.

Whooooaaaaa. Don't hold back Bowflex. Tell us how you really feel. laughing.gif

Haha Sorry I just can't believe these kinds of people. I just saw a special on tv about young people moving to the United States, and literally an 18 year old guy from Burma fled to Thailand when his village was attacked by the government, and was stuck in a camp for 10 years. After reading about a UN-supported organization that helped relocate refugees to other countries, his family got to move to the United States. During his entire 10 years in Thailand he wasn't allowed to stray more than 300 meters from the camp, EVER, and they had no running water anything. They got to come to the States, began working right away, and supported themselves AND paid taxes.

Then you have some craphead from a developed nation that feels like breaking the rules, then laughs about it constantly. I'd love if Canada would revoke his citizenship, the US deport him to a third world nation, and then see how he likes it.

I think that's a little harsh but that's just my opinion.

I laughed at that too. Canalien is my fave. The hoser tag was funny too.

A very well written story. Thanks for sharing that with us, Mandi. I think this pic is apropos now:
