They sure don't always know what they are saying! your story about the SSA is a very good example.

I went to another DMV today and asked them pretty much the same questions and while the lady (are there only women working at the DMV? second office, only ladies too!) didn't seem very sure on which document I would need, but she seemed pretty sure that I can have a license while adjusting my status. So, I think I will go back there next week when I receive my NOA1 (I assume we receive one for AOS too) and ask her if it looks like what I need. I hope she won't have changed her mind by then tongue.gif

What a relieve to read your post! smile.gif
I am happy to see I am not the only one who have been told I "can" pass the test with just the NOA and my SSN. Hopefully next time I will go, I won't have a total different version; but it is good to know!

Miss Yoko, I had no idea your interview was so close!!!!!!!!!
Big big thoughts to you on wednesday!!! I am also sure everything will go smootly!
If you have evrything well prepared, you're going to be just fine! wink.gif

And big big thoughts still to you Sunny on thursday! smile.gif

Hi everybody!

Well, Rachel, I am sorry to hear that Alex could lose his job... sad.gif
Did he do something wrong or is it because they need to cut some jobs?
I hope whatever happens you will both be all right.

Cécile, great news!! I am happy you will have your SSN soon.
What the person told me at the DMV is, you could apply for a license right away, but it would expire as soon as your I-94 expires.
So, he said that I just need to show him proof that I am adjusting my status, and, according to that person, I could apply for my license as soon as I get my NOA, and not necessarly my EAD card. The EAD card is a temporary card while waiting for the green card(while adjusting our status), so why that person is telling you you cannot get a license while adjusting your status, but says it is ok as soon as you get your EAD card? Someone correct me if I am wrong but aren't we still "adjusting our status" while we are having our EAD card?
Am I the only one who have been told that? whistling.gif What about you Lucie? did they say the same thing to you?
In my case, I am currently driving. I have my French license, and the international one with me, and I don't know why I could not be able to drive.
I agree with Lucie through, depending of the person you talk to, they say one thing or the complete opposite! headbonk.gif so if anyone have a different story on how to get your driving license, I would love to know! smile.gif

Miss Yoko, the agreement you have in your state is awesome!! smile.gif
I did check that with my state, and I know I have to pass the test and everything... but good for you! good.gif

Avaris, great to hear from you!
If I were you, I would wait to get my SS card to file AOS. They ask your SSN on several forms for the AOS.
I don't know if you can file without or not, but it is just a matter of a week or two for your husband to get his number and then send eveything out to Chicago.Good luck to you! smile.gif

EEEEEEEEEEKKKKKKKKKK talk about nerves haha! Sleeping tablets here I come!!!

Nothing like an immigration interview, hoping your man finally gets to you after a year and a half, a wedding, a new house (maybe) and the holidays all in a matter of months! Hahahaha

Is it 2009 yet?

Well, Sunny, good luck to Gareth....less than 10 days now!!

And Blake, I hope to hear good news from you soon! good.gif

I finally sent all the AOS paperwork to immigration last Tuesday. I hope to get a NOA soon, so I can start taking driving classes and be able to go wherever I want by myself! happy.gif

Thanks, flights are being rebooked and a new wedding date is being set. I don't want to go into too much detail as this channel may be monitored. mad.gif When Olga is safely here I will tell the long version. wacko.gif

Looks like it is a long, long journey for you Blake!
Well, I am really happy everything will be all right. Can't wait to hear your story, and I hope you will be able to be with Olga real soon. smile.gif

Jeroen, I hope you had a nice flight! and that you enjoy being with Michelle!! smile.gif

I am hoping that I should be able to send my AOS packet next week or so...
I went with Dr Arnold to fill my I-693, and I am waiting to get it back so I can send everything.
I will be sending the government a nice check! it is crazy to think how much money we put into that process!
Is it a crime to be in love with an american person?
Well, don't pay attention to me, just needed to vent here. whistling.gif

Hi Blake,

I am so sorry to hear that! I was so hoping to hear great news from you...
I hope you're still holding yourself together!
Yes, leaving your home country with family and friends is not such an easy and simple thing to do.
Maybe, it was easier for me because I already spent 2 years in the USA and almost one with my husband before our wedding. I cannot imagine what it would be to meet someone in my home country and coming in his country knowing I don't know anything about it!
I am not in her head, but I think love will let her do the right move... She probably never left her country, and also bring her son in a total different culture with different traditions...it must be a huge transition in her life!
She must be "nerve wracking" (if I say it right!), and need a little more time to make sure it is the right choice to leave everything she knew since she was a little girl...
At the same time you did travel a long way to bring her in her new life with you. You must be very frustrated right now, and I know that not being able to talk to her is not helping at all!!
I don't know what else to say instead that I am truly hoping that she will follow her heart, and understand that she will have such a wonderful future with you. That moving with you will bring her so much! (and you said she will be back on tuesday, isn't it?)
I don't believe in God, but I have many many thoughts for you! and I hope that we will hear from you soon!
Like you said, keep faith!
I sincerely hope the best for you Blake!! rose.gif

Hi all just a quick question that prob has been answered but of course skimmed over it as didn't feel I needed to know the answer at the time hahaha!

Anywayyyyyyyyy when do you get a SSN? Do we apply for that as soon as we get married and if so how long does it take to get? I am wondering as far as getting Gareth on my insurance and also for him to get a MI drivers license etc.....

Thanks!!!

You can get an SSN before the wedding, as long as you wait 2 weeks after Gareth arrival's.
In my case, I waited to get married to apply for my SSN. Like Cécile, I didn't want to apply, receive my SS card, and one week later, to have to change the name and apply again. wacko.gif
Now, if for some good reason you need his SSN before the wedding (like for the insurance), it is a different story, and I would apply before. Me, I didn't need a SSN so badly except for the AOS papers, so I was able to wait for it. smile.gif

Once again, congratulations to you Pam! smile.gif
For the birth certificate, you can do it yourself as you speak both French and English. At least that is what a lot of people here on VJ said, and it is what I am going to do. So, what are you doing exactly on that picture, pouring sand in that vase? I don't know a lot about traditions... but I am curious!

Thanks for your answer Cécile. I guess I will just translate my birth certificate on my own (saving myself time and money).
About the vase, it is something pretty new (so I don't think it is like a tradition here unsure.gif ), I saw that many times last year, as I was assisting the wedding coordinetor at the resort where I worked at.
Basicilly, you have- the unity ceremony:you have 2 candles and a bigger one in the middle. The bride and groom light together the middle one, symbol of being together as one. I never cared so much because the candle is not light "for ever", and if you do an outside wedding, you do need to be careful about the wind, etc.
- the sand ceremony: you have 2 vases of sand (who symbolise you as individual, with your past, your family, friends...), and a 3rd vase who symbolise the new couple. As you're pouring the sand, the judge is explaigning that :"The life that each of you have experienced until now, individually, will hereafter be inseparably united, for the two shall become one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your marriage be. "
When I first saw a sand ceremony, I thought it was really neat, and what I really like too, is, it is something you can keep all your life.Your flowers last usually for a week, your dress is going in a closet..... so I like have that vase with our wedding colors in our place. You also can engrave it, so on ours, there is our names and the date. On the 2 seperate vases, they is our name as well.

Hi everybody! smile.gif

Well, I am finally back....
I missed a lot of news....so Congratulations to Sunny!! Interview date in less than a month!! biggrin.gif You must be thrilled!!! good.gif
I am late for Blake, but I still wish him a good trip! he must be so so happy to bring Olga and her son back with him.
Court, congratulations too on your wedding!! smile.gif
Cécile, I am sorry to hear that immigration messed up! devil.gif I am really hoping you will get news soon...

Well, my sister and brother in law just left the usa. There were the only ones to be able to come to my wedding.
Our wedding was awesome!! That is the best day of my life so far.... biggrin.gif
A lot of stress 2 days before!!! but on the wedding day, I didn't care anymore on tiny details! I was just so happy! We almost had some rain on our wedding day, but it did turned all right (was pouring rain all morning long, but the wedding was at 3 pm).
For my other sister (she is 8 months pregnant), we had her throught Skype with a good webcam, and that way they were able to be there too!! It was just awesome, everybody loved that!!

I am now almost done with the AOS papers! I wanted to enjoy my sister being here, so I left those parers on the side.
I just need to do my TB test, and then I will send the form to Dr Arnold. I also need to translate my birth certificate, but I live "in the woods", and even in the closest big city (1h30 drive away), I couldn't find a french interpretor. I am guessing I will have a friend of mine sign it for me (she is Canadian), I hope I will not get an RFE just because of that!! unsure.gif After all, this is just my birth certificate!!!

Well, I thought I would share some pictures I have from the family. Still waiting the ones from the photographer. crying.gif

Your fiance is going to get your last name? that's something not very common but cool tho and, yeah, I know what you mean when you say you're dad would be happy to see that his name doesn't get lost.. my dad already passed away and I am the last of the family who actually might get a son (my sis is pregnant of a boy but they get her bf's last name), it basically is all up to me to have my family name not disappear (and that while my father came out a big family (8 bro's and sis's)).

Waow!! that's a big family!! smile.gif Well, hopefully, you will have a son some day, and keep the name going! wink.gif
What really happened is, we went to get our certificate done, without really thinking of the names, like everybody does, I was going to take his last name.
At night, with some of his family, Josh was saying that he didn't like his last name, and he was sorry I got "stuck with it"! That's when everybody was like, why don't you take her last name, and put yours after? everybody agreed that my name was really "pretty" (I guess because everything who sounds French is cute to Americains! tongue.gif ), and so the next day, we woke up really early, and went down to office at 8 am to get a chance to change the names before it will be sent away!!
Luckily, we had the same lady as the day before, and without paying any other fee, we added my last name in front of his.
Here is my little story! smile.gif
By the way it is amazing to see you can do almost everything about last names when you get married in the US!! yes.gif

It is crazy to think all the energy you put into it, and like the day after your wedding, you can put your folder&books in a closet, and probably never look at it again! wacko.gif

I am the same here, not really know how I will have my hair done for my wedding! Certainly up, like all of you! smile.gif
My wedding is in like 3 weeks!!! crazy! kicking.gif
When we did our wedding certificate, we decided to keep my last name for both of us! so I am really happy about it!!! Josh have a not easy pronouncing last name wacko.gif , and always hated his, so it is nice to do it that way(we're keeping his lat name after mine though)! Also, in my family, we are 3 girls, so my dad is quite happy to do not see his name disapear!! wink.gif
Well, for today, my program is going for a run, try to look through AOS papers wacko.gif (that AOS process will give me an headache, for sure... yes.gif ), and packing to, then, drive 4h tonight, and go see Josh's dad family!! (and wondering if his dad will hate me for the name change!! tongue.gif .)

Just wondering, for everyone here who is married already or who will be married before the end of the year, do you plan on getting the SSN before or after the marriage? No-one seems to agree about this issue on visa journey...

I am getting married on September, and also plan to get my SSN after my wedding. Why getting a card, and have to change the name on it a week after?
Seeing all you guys wondering about it, I wanted to make sure it is ok to do it that way, so I e-mail the SSN (from their website), and will keep you guys posted as soon as I get an answer from them.

WELCOME!!!!!! I'm so happy that everything went smoothly for you and there were no problems, other than some red eyes. Pam, keep us up to date on the wedding plans and the adaptation to the Minnesota lifestyle. Just don't start ending every sentence with "Yah?" yes.gif

Thank you all for your nice words!
So, we will get married on September 7th. Josh showed me the park where we will have the ceremony, and it looks amasing!!! smile.gif
I then saw all the rentals (like tables, chairs, linens, forks, etc.), and went after that, filled for our wedding certificate.(for the ones wondering, they are asking for a SSN, but I didn't have it yet, the lady have me an addititonal sheet explaigning why I don't have one yet, and told me it should be enough, that I should not be worried.)
Our party is going to take place at his mom's backyard, and she had put so many flowers everywhere! It also looks amasing!
Otherwise, we still have more things to plan, and I am waiting my baby to be off, so we can keep planning, renting, buying..... wink.gif

I agree, that after I year spent in Minnesota, it is getting hard to do not say "Yah" on every single sentences!! laughing.gif
I will try my best Blake!!
About rea-climate, I felt better right after I could unpack all of my stuff! We live on the resort where my fiancé works (and where I lived a year too during my internship), so it is easy on me, everybody was waiting for me, and I know almost all the faces. It is great to do not feel like a total stranger, and my manager is already asking me when I can go back to work!! tongue.gif so........yeah, I am doing great until now! wink.gif

I didn't go on internet since several days......there is so much going on!

Well, Cécile, happy birthday, even if I am a little late. whistling.gif
I am sure you had a great birthday with Bryan.
With the summer we had in france in July, I can understand the heat can be a big change!!! smile.gif

Sunny, I hope what you send to CSC is going to be enough! I agree when you said that if we really want to, we can make up those "proofs" they're asking us!! I am really hoping you will get your NOA2 soon, so you guys can move on.... rose.gif

Hawkeye52, congratualtions on your interview date!!!! kicking.gif

and also good luck to Rachel!! it is going to come so so quickly!!!! believe me! wacko.gif tongue.gif
I cannot wait to see your dress as well! wink.gif

Blake, I have to say you're such a brave and courageous man!!!
A flight from Chicago to Kiev must be quite long, and you will have to wait some more once you get there!! wacko.gif
I am just really impressed!! good.gif What love can make us do... blush.gif

Well, about my news, I just arrived to Minneapolis yesterday!!!!!! kicking.gif
Leaving my family in France was harder than I thought to be honest.... I lived almost 9 months at my sister's (with my brother in law and my nephew), we were, and still are so close......I almost felt guilty to let them alone in France. crying.gif
After my flight, I went through the POE, which went fine. The guys was friendly, and after five mns, I was done!
I also appreciate because there were such big lines for the visitors to go through immigration, and nobody in the "new immigrant" line. After our long waiting process, I enjoyed that moment! devil.gif
When I passed the doors, my sweet baby was waiting for me with a huge bouquet of flowers!! luv.gif We kissed, and I realised I was in front of all those persons waiting for the others passengers....I then saw everybody was smiling at us, so it was ok if they looked!! laughing.gif
We're staying right now at his mom's (we live 4h away from the airport), which is ok, they have such an amasing place (I always felt comfortable!), and I just enjoyed my time with my love.
This morning, I woke up at 6.30 am! wacko.gif and it seems it is also getting hot outside! I cannot wait to get back to our place, and see everybody back!! and unpacked my suitcases! and be all alone with my love! luv.gif
You guys have all a nice day! smile.gif

Now I am in St. Louis, I didn't sleep very well (damn AC is too noisy) but it doesn't matter because we are now together smile.gif

Darn, just did some reading on 'moral turpitude' on wikipedia and if its true what they say there, then the thing I did was also moral turpitude.. that would mean I would have had to say 'yes' on the question on the i94 when i entered the states before, and I said no coz I didn't think it would be moral turpitude...

So basically, besides having a big chance of being denied on my visa, I might actually be able to get a ban on my *ss even though I did not know this would fall under moral turpitude sad.gif

I'm so scared right now sad.gif

I am sorry to hear that. sad.gif
Maybe, you're paying attention to that, while they won't even care...
I would feel the same way, I am always looking at every details, and worry about it a lot after! wacko.gif
I think that if it would have been such a problem, they would have not approved you, or wanted to have more info before approving your case.
Anyways, you don't have some much time before your interview, I hope you can try to change your mind until then.
I hope the best for you both. rose.gif

What type of birth certificate you got? Normal one or international one?

In my case, I asked for the normal one.("copie intégrale du certificat de naissance")

Justin did you guys get packet 3 yet?

YES!! Finally! And it was just like you said it was going to be. I sent an email to the consulate in Vancouver inquiring about the status of our file since it was going on 3 weeks. And then this afternoon, when we thought it was lost smile.gif, Valerie was thrilled when she went to get her mail...PACKET 3! She called and got her name on the list for her medical in Vancouver for next Wednesday. They emailed her the forms and stuff, and now she's ransacking her boxes trying to dig up her vaccination list. She knows that she's had all of the vaccinations they need, but hasn't found her card yet. If she can't find it, can she just get the shots again? I hope so. It says that if she can't provide proof, she has to bring a blood test with her....from elsewhere. And that takes around 10 days to get done. Hopefully, she can find it or they can give them to her again. We really don't want to have to reschedule.

But, we have all the forms already filled out and ready to fax back to them, so we'll get those back out either tomorrow or Thursday, and then the wait for the interview date begins! I can't beleive we are finally here....not much longer! I am just praying we can get our interview by mid September!

Congratualtions! kicking.gif
You're right, not much longer now!! biggrin.gif

It is not an approval, but yes, after you submitted the papers needed, it should not take too long before you get approved. wink.gif
Best of luck to you Sunny, and I am hoping it won't be one of those papers who will take too long to get... rose.gif

I wouldn't worry about your age difference, baxxy. Not every couple is going to be the same age, with less than a year's difference. I think the only reason why USCIS would be concerned about an age gap would be if you had a significant difference. For example: If you were 27 and your fiancee were 70, or something like that.

Yep! I agree with Lazulineiris. I would not be too concern about the age difference in a couple. It is not something they would look right away to decide if you can be approved or not......except if the case is suspicious, and that the couple in case would have a huge age difference.

Sunny, sorry for asking. It is true that you would have told us if it was the case... blush.gif
At least I am really happy that you will be able to have your engagment ring!!! You must be so excited!! Finnally, you won't have to explain why you're engaged, but do not have a ring yet! smile.gif

Cécile, to be able to finally see and live with your fiancé is so awesome, but to have your birthday with him as well is terrific!!! biggrin.gif

I am so happy right now, and at the same time,I cannot believe we're approved. It is a long process, but I feel lucky comparing to other timelines.....

Thanks guys! :-)

Rachel, I'm glad you finally have an interview date. That must relieve your mind greatly. And yeah, they're oddly efficient at the medical place...except for the X-ray technician that left my husband waiting for 40 minutes in the X-ray room! My sweet husband was too polite to go looking for him, and was SO afraid the whole time that he'd screw something up somehow. I have never talked through such minute details as we did through this process (like, literally, line by line through EVERY form, and why didn't I include THREE pay stubs instead of two, and blah blah blah).

And sunny, I love non-diamond rings (at least not as the main jewel) and yours is BEAUTIFUL!! Congrats. And keep the faith...those bastards at CSC will be done soon. I'm really appalled at how long it's taking you. It's criminal.

Our visa arrived this morning, so we're all set for him to fly out on Sunday, which is a great relief, especially to his mind, which is prone to excessive worry anyhow.

And of course, he paid $70 for the fastest courier option, and it wasn't even necessary. He could have saved $40 and still had it in plenty of time. Bastards. headbonk.gif

Congratulations on getting your visa!! good.gif good.gif
I sorry to see your husband had to wait 40 mns!!!I cannot believe the person who took care of him didn't go see him earlier!!!I guess they don't know how stressing that all process is for us! but hey, now it is all from the past! and you have your visa!! Yeah!! kicking.gif
In France, the embassy ask you for a fast reply enveloppe to have our passeport back with our visa. It only cost me around 20€.
I am happy for you guys, to finally go home together. smile.gif

Sunny, I LOVE your ring, it is gorgeous!!! I understand, you must be pretty impatient to finally wear it!! biggrin.gif

Rachel, I have to say you are quite organized!! wacko.gif
The good thing about moving in and out is to see what you're still using. I am impressed with what you've done already. good.gif
Me, I haven't pack yet....even I keep telling myself I should start! blink.gif Actually, that's not true, Josh already came back with one suitcase full of my stuff......but there is still so much more!!
I am lazy about packing, but I need to start going through my stuff, and see what I will keep, throw away or give to charity too.
My worst worry right now is more about selling my car! I really need to sell it, so I won't bother any of my familly to do that for me. Well, I hope someone will buy it, and buy it soon!

Everybody wants the NOA2 processed in order, especially us, the ones from VJ (who see timelines from everybody),and seeing people filling after you, and approved before makes things harder!

Aah, I'm a giant - 172.2 cm here, or 5'7 if you prefer!

Cecile, glad to hear the medical went okay!

And thanks for the feedback - I think you and Pam are right, and that it may the best thing to do (well, until I've spent a week there and then you'll hear me complaining about my allergies and my messy sister laughing.gif ), so I think I'm going to be phoning my mother this evening.

My whole family's pretty poor at the moment, actually! (Part of that is my fault, as my dad's saving every penny he can for flights for everyone to the wedding). My sister just graduated university and left the house she was sharing last week. She was hoping to get back her deposit as she and a couple of the other girls she was sharing with had made an effort to leave it clean and tidy. Unfortunately one of her male housemates decided that on the last day he was going to smash windows and generally leave a mess everywhere for 'fun'. rolleyes.gif Well, there went my sister's and all her other housemates' deposit. I hope that somehow she manages to get money back off him but I have a feeling it's going to be hard to track him down...

Rachel, you're not the only giant - 172,5 cm.....but not idea in other metrics! wacko.gif
Let us know what your parents will tell you! It might be the best way to spend some time with them.
About your sister' deposit, it sucks!!! I would be so so mad at that guy! mad.gif He should be the only one hold as responsible! (even if I don't know what are the actual rules about sharing a house)
