So Melvin was scheduled to go for his medical exam today in Mobay but then they called and said for him to come tomorrow 8/22 so we will see how that goes. We are not even sure if the he will be able to get to Mobay due to the uprooted trees and electricity poles down on the streets. We are hoping for a positive outcome tomorrow. He still has no electricity in Bala Clava, some of Santa Cruz, and Mulgrave. He has been talking to me since the hurricane and immediately turning off both phones. Melvin did find a Juicy Beef in Santa Cruz, bought something to eat and drink, and then used an outlet to charge his phone under the table. Of course he had to act like he wasn't loittering blush.gif blink.gif .

If he doesn't get to go to the medical tomorrow, I am afraid that he will not have it back in time. I told him that we would still go to the embassy anyway. But really, whats the sense of me going to JA if I know that he will receive a blue paper because of his missing medical exam? Yes, to see him but the main reason was to accompany him at the interview. Quite frankly, I am a little confused helpsmilie.gif . It will cost me $100 dollars to change the ticket and he would probably be rescheduled for another interview date once the medical exam comes in. We'll see. Maybe I am just jumping the gun and over exaggerating (hype).

Any great words of wisdom? Thanks very much appreciated.

I think you should still go. Mr. Man got rescheduled for tomorrow also and I heard that now they give you the medical report in a sealed envelope to take to the interview. So don't fret yourself.

that would be wonderful to get it same day or two days later and take it with you they should have expedited medicals since everything else seem to have an expedited option

Good Night everyone.... chris is fine and fam no electricity still and his moms house had some water damage but they are all well. Also, have a question, what shipping service have you all had good results with shipping papers to the Embassy from Jamaica? Whats the preferred one? I was thinking on DHL for him to turn in his DS230.

Is it bad that outside of worrying about my family and friends I was praying "God do, save di Immigration building because we ah wait long enough".

I love this site. I learn something new all the time. I had no clue I could add credits to my spouse phone. Since he has the megaphone and a work cell phone alot of time he will let the credits on his personal phone go to zero saying I am "too busy to worry with it". In most case it does not matter since he calls me on the megaphone and I can still call him on his cell. With this storm and the power being shut off in a couple of hour; no one knows how the megapone will perform. I do know on the best day the charge only last 40-50 minutes without being recharged. I had added $20 USD to his Digacel #.

Jenice

Yes that sounds good Jenice. We have the megafone and cable & Wireless connection for long distance and digicel(his personal phone). He has charged every phone because he knows that the power will be out. This site is the best for real. I'm so glad that I found it because you all have helped us in so many ways.

The cell sites will be out too they run on electricity sad.gif they may turn that power off too with all those antennas/wires and stuff could cause fire. I told chris and his fam to keep em all charged anyways.

I been doin more thinkin on this ... if they do have battery backups like vzw does then those sites can run on that i hope so!!

My husband went to the supermarket last night to stock up on the supplies. Though a lot of Jamaicans may be coming off nonchalant, they are making preparations. The supermarket was so packed, he didn't reach home for a couple of hours. My dad was in the supermarket this morning and he has been preparing for the storm for a few days now.
I called my grandparents, who my dad is worried about, and they are like, "nuttin nah go happen. We not worried yu nuh. Lawd, stop worry bout wi, wi fine". laughing.gif laughing.gif
We are going to continue to pray and know that God has it all in control. Nothing more any of us can do, but pray knowing their lives are in God's hands.

I just sent money too hes finally gotten the picture that this storm could cause major drama so they are now boarding up the windows and preparing getting gas, and food thank goodness i feel a bit better.

I don't know if they still do medicals this way but when A did his it was almost like a group medical. A bunch of people had an "appointment" at the same time and they would do the first thing to each person, then the second thing, then the third...so they are always waiting for the docs to finish up with the first thing on everyone in the group before they move on to the next thing. It seems like the medical is alway an all day affair.

yeah maybe thats what it is im just up here tryin to manage what they have to check wow. I would assume the shots, then the blood tests what else can they really check, a few oohs and ahhs and breath ins and breath outs tap ya knee and should be on ur way

I do have to say that all you "Black Friday" shoppers SUCK!!!!! I work at Old Navy and I Hate the friday after Thanksgiving with a passion. While you probably see bargains and fun, I see running around like a chicken with my head cut off, everyone crabby, and rude customers making my life a nightmare. The most exhausting day of the year. Glad it will be my last.

My husband picks up his own health insurance TODAY!!! Woo hoo. I'm looking at December 23rd being the last day I work two jobs. Looking forward to some weekends again.

While you are out doing your after Thanksgiving shopping, make sure you are extra nice to the people in the stores. They are probably having a rough day. Good luck on some good bargains!!!!

I have to say that I am one of those crazies!! laughing.gif Love Black Friday...last year I missed it cause I was in JA. mad.gif ...I was screwed up for the whole holiday season! The best part for me is by 9am on Black Friday morning I am DONE with all of my Christmas shopping! I am a horrible procrastinated, so it works for me. Last year, I was running around on Christmas Eve, convincing myself that oven mitts were the BEST present for my Aunts (cause that's all they had left in the store blink.gif ) Never Again! Usually, I am one of those crazies that wakes-up at 1am to be on line by 2am anxiously awaiting Black Friday shopping to commence laughing.gif !

Gill

We had $49 cashmere sweaters last year on Black Friday. Talk about crazies....they were literally tugging them between two people, pushing and shoving. It was crazy.

From working in retail, I usually just shop the internet and go into stores mostly for gift cards. Not a big fan of stores much anymore.

I will probably make you sick saying this.....since you are so last minute.....I am making all my Christmas presents this year. Over the years, I have dabbled in making some presents. This year, I am making nearly ALL of them. I've been working on them for months now. I will only need to shop for my husband, my kids, and a few misc. gift cards and I'll be well done with all that before Thanksgiving and probably do most of it by the internet and have them bring it all to me. I love my UPS man!!!!!!

I may be pretty broke this christmas so everyone just may get a homemade cake and cookies ! and a card or one gift for the house

Ok, I just googled cornmeal porridge and found another recipe on jamaican-recipes.com Ladies let me know if this sounds all right. Here it is:

Cornmeal Porridge
1 cup Yellow Cornmeal (coarse or fine)

4 cups Water

¼ cup Half and Half (or Milk)

½ cup Sweetened Condensed Milk

2 tbsp. Sugar

¼ tsp. Nutmeg (ground)

¼ tsp. Cinnamon (ground)

Vanilla Flavoring (2 drops)

Add cornmeal to a bowl, and then pour enough water into the bowl to cover the cornmeal. Use a fork to mix the cornmeal in the bowl to let the water and cornmeal mix loose and watery.

Bring the 4 cups of water to boil in a saucepan. Turn the heat to medium.

Slowly pour the water and cornmeal into the saucepan while stirring with a fork. You will have to stir the mix continuously for about 3 minutes. Make figure eight patterns if you like; this will stop the cornmeal from forming lumps. Be careful from this point on.

The porridge will splash and burn your hand if the heat is too high. Turn the fire down even more if the splashes from the pot become large. Cover the pot and let simmer for about twenty minutes. Occasionally stiring the mixture in the pot.

Turn off the fire but do not remove the pot from the stove. Now add all the ingredients, except the nutmeg. Stir to sweeten this Jamaican porridge and then taste it. Add more ingredients of your choice to get the desired taste. Serve in small soup bowls and sprinkle with ground nutmeg.

Hi, like Rhonda...I couldn't stay away...I missed you guys! blush.gif

Anyway...the above receipe is dead on for cornmeal porridge! Just don't forget to keep stirring... or it will get clumpy and lumpy! Keep the fire low after you put the cornmeal in...Viola!! Yummy Yummy...I used to make it for my sons when they were babies, usually at the 10-11pm feeding...when they turned 7-8 months...I used their formula instead of milk!

Trust me Rhonda, it's something to keep in mind...cause it holds them! My sons slept through the night after they had their cornmeal bottle! yes.gif And Mommy could finally get a full nights sleep! yes.gif

Now I make it for Saturday morning breakfast! With some buttered Hardo bread and we are good to go!!!! YUM!

You are no longer worth the effort or my VALUABLE time to sit down and respond to your obilivious statements.

You've GOT to be kidding me!!!!

This forum was started for US to have a place to help each other -- not BASH each other every chance we get.

What is wrong with someone having an opinion? That's just fine if you don't agree with it but do we have to get so nasty?

I have been around (and been a party to) plenty of prejudice in my life. It is what it is. Yeah, it's a shame that in this day and age things like this still go on -- I am sorry for that. I really am. But I don't go around making it worse. Whatever......

Ya know Mindy.....I TOTALLY miss the good ole days when we used to laugh, joke, support, be caring, etc etc and not have ANY of this BS drama on here !!!!! Where the heck are all of our "veterans"????!!!

Oh LORD!!! Get over the veterans already!!!! It sounds quite insulting to those who are "newbies" on here! Like they are unwanted or something. I have seen you make this comment many times before, even when I was a newbie and all it made me do is not like the veterans. so that comment really gets the thread no where. Its gonna become a battle of the newbie verse the vet in a minute and of course the newbie will win, cause there are WAY more of them. The thread is what it is! It evolves just like everyting else in life! It has its ups and downs.

The problem on here is what I see on many other forums that have to do with Jamaica and the Americans who love it. People have a high-octane opinion, mixed with their love for a country but really have never walked a mile in the shoes of the people from the country. I think people who are not Black don't understand when things SEEM to always have a "racial" issue behind them because they only see the surface. They only see what the media presents to them.

I gotta say, there's a WHOLE underground, unspoken world that Black people from ALL OVER THE WORLD share. Only WE share it so other races and cultures don't get it. Blacks meet from the US, UK, Africa, Caribbean, and they all have someting in common. The way they have been treated throughout the history of this world. They all have heard horrible tear causing stories from their granparents, and even their own children. The all know whats its like to be a ethnic minority, even when they live in a country or continent where they are the majority. When we don't live in areas where there are many of us we gravitate to one another, giving each other an unspoken look, or head nod just to show, we acknowledge each others Blackness. When we are around each other we embrace our Blackness and our culture much more than we do when we are around others. WE wear our hair differently, we dress differently, we talk about differnet things. We have converstaions and speech patterns we would never share with other races no matter how down we think they are. When we do it fuels debates like the one on here cause others just don't understand.

I know this may be new for many to understand, even if you've been around Black people for years, dated Black men, had Black friends, listen to reggae, rap, soul and R&B. There are just somethings that you will never get. Either you can't physically experience them, like having someone call you a N----, have people tell you to cover your nappy hair, spit at you cause your Black, through hateful slurs at you, say your pretty for a Black girl, ask if you wash your hair, sit in an office of all whites, sit in a school of all whites, sit on a bus, at a movie, in the mall......its a different world from our eyes. Then there's just the stuff we as Black folks talk about in the privacy of or Black neighborhoods, some of that stuff will never come out to the public til the day we all die!!!!

SO when issues like JENA 6 come out well you're just getting a bit of a taste of what we talk about and how we talk on the DL.

HELLO!!!!!

Girl you hit the nail on the head! Thank you for your eloquent, well written, enlightful post. Oh but maybe my ideas or throughts aren't worthy because I am a "NEWBIE"!!!!! #######???? I think it is quite the opposite because you see we all have more experience .................(let it go......)

Thanks again....

I think the veterans comments were made as far as the spirit of the way previous discussions have occured and not necessarily what was said.

But....once AGAIN, everything was taken completely out of context !!! No wonder folks are droppin like flies....

Well it can be taken several ways what was said in respect to the vetaran comment so we when posting should try to understand that when you type words they can be taken different ways as opposed to actually speaking. I read that statement abt the veterans several times and in all honestly it can be viewed negatively or positively. Words on paper or screen are very different than spoken word. Everyone comprehends differently, information presented to them. I was always taught to think before i speak as some things can come off wrong and once said they cant be taken back. Lets all try to stay positive here and focus on what we are all here for smile.gif to support each other through our journey all this added fighting amongst us makes it a bit more stressful. This is a place i normally come to get my mind off things and for you guys support. Lets get back to that:) im sure everyone has voiced what they have to say on the topics of the past few days, week(s).

But of course, it's ALWAYS taken to a negative level !!!!!! If anyone has ever read part 1 & 2 of the yardie thread ...you would see that 99% of the times everything was positive.

I just asked my sons 2 friends that are over right now ...one black and one black/japenese about this entire scenario.............and neither one of them expressed every having ANY type of prejudiceness towards them. IT IS HOW WE RAISE OUR CHILDREN. STOP EXPRESSING TO YOUR CHILDREN about all of the negativeness you have endured in your life, because then they turn around and take that into the "outside world". I've been through ALOT but I don't have to tell my son everything that I've gone through and trust me, I've dealt with a ton of prejudiceness as well. Have our children of TODAY, make a POSITIVE CHANGE for the world and change the BS racism that still exists (from years gone by) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I know my son is doing that because of the way "I" am raising NOT to see color and to NOT be ignorant to anyone that is of a different race.

On Dr Phil yesterday his FIRST WORDS were .......................WHERE ARE THE PARENTS OF ALL OF THESE CHILDREN, both sides !!!!

Please.. Please lets let this go im praying crying.gif and begging on this let it go move on next subject ok im about to put on some BOB ok...Everyone hopefully should have had their say on this by now im normally quiet but wow we are on yardie 4 lets stay in the present yardie 3 is the past....lets focus on what is occuring now pretty please with sugar on top ok...smile.gif

Christar is by far the closest...it's right across the road from my alma mater (Campion). It's a few blocks away from the embassy. It's a nice little walk, but it can be done; if you drove, it's 5 minutes, if that much (only because of the traffic lights and congestion on that road).

I stayed at Sunset Inn before i can see the hilton from there im just not sure if thats close to the embassy it was clean and cheap though about 65-70 US http://sunsetinn-ja.com/. Its on Altamont Crescent....Knutsford seems pretty nice i odnt even care what it look like lol as long as im on time for my interview!!! i dont want to be late!! hey do they ever let you in early?
