Australia and New Zealand	Australian Passport & Name Change process	I tried to figure out how to change my name in Australia without actually physically going there, and it's all too complicated for me... I haven't travelled anywhere since I was married five years ago, and I can't afford to anyway. My Australian passport expires later this year, and I just won't have one until I get citizenship and can get a US passport. It's not the way I would have chosen to do things, but they essentially tied my hands because of their irrational fear of the evildoers who were flooding the system with marriage-related name-change requests (NOT!) It's a bit like saying 'do I have to tell a future employer that I had problems at school because my first-grade teacher put me in the naughty corner once' as opposed to 'I was suspended for trying to burn the school down'. If they told him that he would be able to reapply for a visa at a certain time I honestly don't see why he'd need a waiver now... they didn't charge him with anything or officially ban him, did they? Waivers (I-601 and I-212) and Administrative Processes (221g)	Mental Health Denials/Waivers	There aren't a lot of people who have to go through it compared to the number of people who apply for visas - you really need to be emotionally stable to put yourself through the peculiar hell that is a long-term long-distance relationship. If you're not, the relationship doesn't usually last long enough to even think about immigration, let alone get to the interview... My other advice is don't be TOO open... if they ask you if you know what time it is, say 'yes', don't babble. Know what I mean? I bought myself a LOT more hassle than I needed because I was so terrified of doing anything 'wrong'. And nobody ever told me before the medical that I'd need a letter of explanation from my doctor - if I'd realised I could have taken it along with me and said 'see, here's a letter from my doctor' and I would have passed the medical on the spot and not had three weeks of panic over whether I was admissable or not. Waivers (I-601 and I-212) and Administrative Processes (221g)	Mental Health Denials/Waivers	As far as I know, if he is under treatment and he has a letter from his psychiatrist to say that he's no danger to self and others and you have a treatment plan for his continuing care you shouldn't need a waiver. But it doesn't hurt to be prepared just in case... it never remotely occurred to me that I'd need one (and I didn't) - I just had to get a letter from my head-shrinker to say that I was no more likely to have another nervous breakdown than the next person, and that I was depressed/anxious, not psychotic... if depression alone was a bar to getting a visa, the queues would be very short indeed. United Kingdom	Me and my husband want to move back to the UK (He already has his 20 yr gcard)	If you've been married five years, he's eligible for US citizenship by now. Get him his citizenship and a US passport and then you can come and go freely... we're starting to think about going to Australia to live, but after going to all the trouble to get me here we wouldn't have wanted to even THINK about leaving before I had my citizenship. I know somebody from France who got her interview much quicker because she lived in Paris - she told them she didn't need to make travel plans etc and asked for an interview ASAP and they gave her one in about three weeks instead of three months (they probably had an empty slot to fill...) You can get the K1 visa without having the vaccinations at all... but you HAVE to prove that you've had them before you can alter your status in the US and get your greencard. It's usually cheaper and less hassle to get them done in your home country... for a healthy adult the shots needed are tetanus, MMR, and varicella/chickenpox. If you can prove to them that you've already had chicken pox you don't need that shot. It's a VERY brief visual inspection and while it's not any fun to let somebody else look at your girly bits it's hardly sexual molestation... the nurse will be there. US Embassy and Consulate Discussion	Medical ... what exactly do they do?	Whether or not the doctor asks you to remove your underwear really seems to depend on the luck of the drawer. I really wasn't expecting it (and I wasn't happy about it one bit) but it really wasn't a drama - just a thirty-second peek downstairs to make sure I had the right girly bits I guess... Btw, because I asked if I really HAD to and told the doc that my girly bits were not for public viewing, he told me that if I really didn't want him to check I could go to my gynaecologist or GP and get THEM to do it and to write a letter that I didn't have any STDs... but then I wouldn't have been able to get the medical over with that day so I said 'just get it over with'. Oh and yes, he left the room while I disrobed and he called the nurse to come in and supervise the procedure. US Embassy and Consulate Discussion	London Embassy - Vaccination Requirements	What they said - the big three are tetanus, the MMR, and varicella/chickenpox, and since you refer to the shot not being available 50 years ago I'll assume you're old enough to need a flu shot (and possibly the pneumonia vaccine?) there's a list somewhere that has them all on it. Get them done by your GP and get him to write a note on office letterhead saying that he gave you X shots on X date. Then keep it safe because you'll need to take it to the medical and you might need the note again in the US if there's any question about needing a new vaccination certificate later on. I don't think it could possibly be a hinderence for you to make the effort to go there for the interveiw... some consulates won't let you into the building or the interview but even then you'll be able to hold your fiance's hand while he waits in the line outside and you'll be there for him when he comes out... In the time I've been on the board, there have been several people who have been BANNED because of marijuana use coming up at the medical/interview. They don't HAVE to check for it at the exam but they can if they want to, and your fiance is taking a huge risk. If it was my fiance I'd ask him which matters to him more - the drugs, or you. Because if it's you he has to quit and quit NOW and stay quit... the US takes drug use extremely seriously and he could get deported once he gets here if he is ever caught with the stuff in his possession... if he can't give the stuff up I'm afraid you're in love with an addict and I'd be extremely worried about comitting to a relationship with him. I know because I was on Disability and hadn't worked in three years when we put in my K1 petition and it didn't raise a ripple in the system - they never even asked about it! The only time they might be concerned about the earnings potential of the beneficiary is if the petitioner is of limited means... (even then, they care more about how much they WILL be earning in the future than what they are now - DH had only just got a 'real' job when we applied and they never asked about that either!) That's the interview they do before they give you a greencard IF THEY HAVE SERIOUS DOUBTS ABOUT THE VALIDITY OF YOUR RELATIONSHIP. ie. if they think you're only in it for the greencard. The actual proportion of people who have to go through it is miniscule, so it's really not something you need to worry about unless they tell you it's going to happen. You don't even go into a seperate room - as far as I know, you just stand at a counter and talk through a grille! They can ask as many questions as they like, but MOST places are very civil about it.
