So the story goes....

Does any one know if the National Lacrosse League is still going on with the Toronto Rock and Syracuse, etc.?

The National Lacrosse League is still around. Syracuse is not in the league anymore, but the Toronto Rock are still in it and the Philadelphia Wings who play out of the Wachovia Center along with 10 or so other teams. The Rock will be in Philly on April 3rd. The Wings home opener is January 16th. Now that baseball is over, this is our next big thing to look forward to. The full season schedule can be found at www.nll.com

Big lacrosse fan here!

Go Wings!

OK, here is something i've never understood. Why would you wear a jersey to a game of a team or player who does not play for either team that is playing at the arena? I've seen it a few times in all sports, but mostly in hockey.

It keeps you warm? innocent.gif

I know a few people that do this.. My husband is one of them. The people I know that do this do it for one reason and one reason only, ok maybe two.... They are transplants to this area, but their "home team" happens to be playing that night but they are not there, so they are supporting their team while watching their significant other's team. OR, in my husband's case he has several Toronto Rock jerseys all with different players on them, most of which don't play for the Rock anymore. If he happens to have a jersey of a player that is playing that night in Philadelphia then he will wear that players jersey. He always gets a good laugh when we run into that player after the game at the and hear what the hell are you doing here man?

Go Phillies!!!

Sports fan here! Baseball - Go Phillies crying.gif , Lacrosse - The Brooklin Redmen are my husband's summer league team that he follows (does that explain the name now?) and we split for winter ball (NLL) between the Toronto Rock - him and the Philadelphia Wings - me and Hockey, Habs- him, Flyers - me.

We actually met through the NLL, so sports are a very big part of our lives and the fact that our teams are rivals makes life fun for us. good.gif

CanadaI'll ask my fellow Canucks!
First, let me start by saying that my husband is the Canadian I am the US Citizen. We got married in the states (because my family wouldn't travel and I really wanted my dad to walk me down the isle and most of his family is coming to our second wedding in two weeks) and had no issues at all. He didn't exactly lie to the border guard, but he didn't exactly tell the truth either as far as I know. He just told them that he was coming to visit his fiance, they never asked if he was intending to get married, and he never offered. In PA, there is only a 3 day waiting period from when you get your marriage license to when you can use it. So we got our license on a Monday and got married that Saturday. We both went up to Canada the following week to visit his mom in Saint John New Brunswick for a few days before I flew home from Nova Scotia. Since then when we cross we are honest and say we are visiting our spouse for however long and have never had an issue yet. (Please no issues when he comes down next week since we are flying out of Newark to the Dominican, please please please!!!)

I wonder, because they sometimes check the car when you come into the states if you have a wedding dress with you if that may cause an issue unless you told them the real story and had proof of ties to Canada and that you will return. That would be my biggest concern.

Good luck!

CanadaPOE at a (not) busy land border
Hubby and I cross at Thousand Islands on a regular basis. Never had a real issue at the border except for the time that I said I was flying out on a certain date, weather permitting and they called me into secondary because I didn't have a copy of my flight info for going home. WHOOPS!

If you stay on 81 you can hop on the 90 right before Syracuse with no major issues and save yourself some cash on tolls from the 90. There is a toll bridge before you hit the border this is like $2.50 to cross. There is a mid-sized area from the Watertown are down to around the Mexico area that if a storm comes along or some lake effect snow makes that stretch of road a bit scary to drive. I've done it a few times and have never saw my knuckles so white, but my car is horrible in snow. (I crashed it twice in snow storms, once hitting two guardrails on a highway in PA and the other time landing in a ditch on the 401 near Brighton so I get scared driving in snow sometimes...)

I'm pretty sure the hubby will cross at Thousand Islands when he gets his visa simply for the fact that there is hardly ever a line at the border, unless its a holiday, and if he goes that way, he won't have to drive through Toronto and all the construction through the St. Kitts area.

Good luck and let us know where you cross and how it goes!

I'm kind of disappointed that his truck doesn't have a trailer hitch, though... means I have to attempt to sell my car here. It would've been so much better to take it down with me, considering I'll maybe get half what I paid for it now, and it runs perfectly fine. I'd probably get another three years out of it. sad.gif

Whoa whoa whoa.

A trailer hitch is VERY easy and cheap to get installed. I don't think you'd be looking at any more than $100. Chances are his truck will be able to tow your car, too.

Honestly, it shouldn't be that big of a deal getting a hitch installed and attaching your car to it.

I'm not sure if there are any other issues preventing you bringing your car down, but if not...get hitched, then get hitched!

It's really that easy?

I know nothing about cars/trucks/whathaveyou. He didn't know what all would be involved with hitching my car to his, outside of the fact that he'd have to install a hitch to his truck and then we'd still have to get the dolly to lift my car's tires, and something about wiring up my lights to his...

Seemed confusing and overly complicated, but if it's as easy as you say, maybe I should push him to look into it.

No, I don't relish the idea of his truck towing my car during the end of December with snow as a possibility... but I don't like the idea of it sitting here waiting to be sold when it's in perfectly fine shape.

I just looked this up since I wasn't sure. I am REALLY bored at work today... Some U-haul locations can install hitches for you and they will help you pick out the right one for your vehicle online. The prices vary, but a $100-$200 investment on a hitch and you get to keep your car? It sounds like a good investment to me! U-haul also rents car trailers or a car dolly to move it. Tell him to check out www.uhaul.com and click the vehicle towing link.

We got a PS3 earlier this year, thanks to the help of a friend who traded in some old games, so we could get it at a discount, so our plan was to get Rock Band for each other for Christmas. Well, that same friend found Rock Band 1 for $50 with the microphone, a guitar and the drums and was nice enough to pick it up for us, so now I have no idea what we are going to do. Hell, I don't even know where we will be spending the holiday. And I've never had a full sized tree up at my place since I've had the cats, so it might just be the fiber-optic tree again this year... There are places, I believe Connecticut where they have pizza with just sauce, no cheese tongue.gif

I think pizza here is super weird. My husband brought me to this place in Philly when I first visted and got me a slize of pizza with just cheese and sauce - by the by he claimed it was the BEST pizza ever. Umm where's the toppings?

He told me that adding toppings to a pizza other than cheese and sauce was sacrilegious.

Also told me that going to mainstream pizza places like papa johns, dominoes etc was also sacrilegious.

My husband is a food snob.

I tell ya growing up, we couldn't afford to be food snobs, you ate what was in front of you and if it was pizza night and the pizza came from pizza pizza you didn't care. laughing.gif

Pizza with just sauce is called Tomato Pie and its delish! Its usually a thicker crust. Unless you get an upside down pizza, that is the dough (thin crust), then provolone cheese then the sauce. That is good too. Genuardi's (one of the supermarkets in the Philly area) has it and that is good as well.

I did the same thing to my husband on one of his first trips here. I took him to a local pizza place that has great pizza and ordered a large with no toppings. He looked at me like I was a crazy American. Ok, well I am but that is besides the point. So he insisted on getting 1/2 pepperoni since just plain pizza is boring. Don't you know when he tried a plain slice he realized that I was right and it was better plain. whistling.gif I know junk and comfort food. good.gif

You know those little suggary candies you get in a roll? In Canada we call them rockets. Here they call them smarties. But smarties are chocolate! We also argue about that daily.

I've learned a trick down here. Whenever I mispronounce a word, mess up an expression, or just screw something up I can say... "Well thats how we say it in Canada," and nobody questions it. They just say, "oh really? weird" laughing.gif

Yes, my husband and I argue about this too! We went to a market before we went camping and he had to point out the Rockets to me.

We also had the "Zee" and "Zed" conversation. Depending on how he is using it, he will say both. I find this very amusing.

He found it extremely amusing that you could purchase beer to go from any bar here in the States. To the point that he always took pictures of beer prices to show his friends and went so far as to take a picture of a bartender putting a 6-pack into a paper bag for a patron to take home. CanadaQuestion for you all...
It looks like Washington DC and Newark, NJ are the only airports in that area that have direct flights to Montreal. sad.gif I'm sure at one time there may have been a direct from Baltimore, but with cutbacks, et al, they probably stopped those flights. Sorry lgg. Good luck to you!
redmen99FemaleCanada2009-12-28 10:59:00
CanadaBack Home....Finally
I flew into Newark from Montreal yesterday and read all the guidelines, but when I checked in online, there was no changes to the rules on Carry-on luggage on Continental's website. So when I got to the airport, I got in the check in line and asked if I could bring this bag with me. She said usually you can, but not right now. So I said, well, is there a charge for checking in my bag, she said normally, yes, but I'm not going to charge you.

Continental gets one star for the day. They would have gotten more had my flight not been delayed 2 hours and I didn't get into Newark until 11 pm and by the time I got off my first train, I missed the last train out of Trenton, NJ and had to pay $70 for a cab to drive me to my car at my sister's house. What should have been a short travel day (1 hour flight) turned into 9 long hours. Lesson learned in this: don't ever fly Continental airlines again and most definitely don't fly into or out of Newark airport!

Canada10 months to citizenship. I am going to do it.

My question though....once you get citizenship, is it something that they (the US gov't) can revoke at anytime or are you a USC for life? Don't get me wrong, I have no plans of doing anything to justify revoking it. ;)

I could be wrong about this, I'm not sure, but I believe once you become a US Citizen Uncle Sam has his claws in you. Meaning that if you should decide to move back to Canada or another country, you will still need to file and possibly pay US taxes if for some reason your new country does not tax you to US levels.

I know this is the way it is if I (the US Citizen in this relationship, my husband is the Canadian) wanted to move to Canada. I can't see why it would be different if you are a natural born citizen or a naturalized citizen.
