2 years ago I had a massive ear infection and after 2 rounds of treatment, I was sent to an ENT doctor for a check up... They did a hearing test and at that point I had lost some of my hearing in that ear and was suffering from tinnitus. The doc gave me a supplement that helped stop the ringing in my ear and it worked and eventually 90% of my hearing loss came back. Now the tinnitus has come back and its annoying the ####### outta me. Not too long ago I threw out the remaining supplements I was given because they were old and now I wish I kept them or at least wrote down the name of them so I could by them again... this ringing is driving me nuts!!!!!

Hmmm...isn't it only a seven hour drive from Philly to Montreal? Wouldn't it be more worthwhile to drive up?

I have a sick feeling my car won't make it and besides, someone will need to drive his stuff over the border after his approval. I'm staying up there with him to help bring his things here.

I'm looking for cheap fare to Montreal from Philly for my hubby's interview. Low and behold I find it on Amtrak for $83... YAY, that's great!! Then I look at the departure time from 30th Street Station in Philadelphia... 5:52AM. How the heck am I supposed to get there at that time? The first train that takes me down there won't get me there until 6:15. If its on time. The next train leaves at 6:30, but its $155.... I don't want to run the chance that the first train is late and I miss the train all together and I am forced to spend a fortune last minute to get to Montreal. The other option is to take the last train down there the night before and wait 6 hours for my first train making a long trip (over 12 hours on 2 Amtrak trains) even longer! Why oh Why Amtrak must you do this to me??? :crying:

grr, I just had a great start to my day...

I was driving to work when I noticed the car didn't want to accelerate anymore so I pulled to the side, I figured it was something to do with the transmission and when I got out I noticed a lot of fluid coming from the car... ... then I realized that I had forgotten my cell phone at home... so started to walk and I had only walked a little way when this nice lady stopped and offered to give me a ride to the nearest pay phone... but as I was getting in she noticed that a tow truck had pulled up behind my car so I went back to my car.. it was just a city towing guy (they just tow people off the road) and he offered to call AAA for me.... the tow truck came and towed me to the mechanic and the mechanic drove me home...

then I had to call my boss almost 2 hours after I was supposed to be at work... they had been worried about me..

so anyways now I have to wait and see what is wrong with the car.. hopefully it is only a small problem ...

Marilyn,

So sorry to hear. Did you notice what color the fluid was? That is usually a pretty good indicator of what is wrong. Pink (transmission fluid) and/or Green (antifreeze) its most likely the radiator as both fluids go through there. If it was clear, it might just be the water pump. Yep, I had that happen to me before... right before vacation.... GRRRR

Anyway, I hope its nothing seriously major and that you can reach your goal of getting the bills paid off.

My rant for the day.. I locked myself out of my office and I was the last one there and I left my car keys on my desk. Now I'm sitting outside playing on the internet on the laptop until hubby gets here with my spare set of car keys. Thank god he is here right now or I'd be walking 13 miles home. Now let's hope my spare key works. Its kind of worn out....

First thing I do tomorrow is put a spare office key on my house keys... GRRRRRRRRRRRR oops8rh.gif

Are you sure you can apply for jobs without a SSN? Well, apply yes, but could you actually start working at a job without one?

My husband did. But his card came in a few days after he started his job, so he had to wait to get paid until his employer had the number to put in the system. So his first check was delayed a week. No biggie.

CanadaSo I have my CR-1 Visa....what now?

Hello everyone,

So I am patiently waiting for my SSN to arrive in the mail. I have created a list of things to accomplish, but wondered if I can do any of them without my SSN, and just with my VISA.

For example: PA driver's license, Cell phone plan (contract), apply for jobs.

Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks :)

You can apply for jobs without your SSN, but that's about it. Here are two links that will come in handy for getting your PA drivers licence and for registering your car.

http://www.dmv.state...r_license.shtml

http://www.dmv.state...r_vehicle.shtml

Read it closely. And a little FYI, when you go to get your license, take a check or money order. They do not take cash. Same with most title agencies where you have to go for your registration.

You can't open a bank account either without a SSN, you are are pretty much stuck until that comes in, unfortunately.

If your SSN doesn't come in within 3 weeks of entry, you will need to go apply at the SS office. My hubby had to do this back in March. After he did that his card came in the mail in about a week. Just in time for him to start his new job....

Good luck!

I would assume away from the garage door so you don't block it for those that have to get in there. But you know what happens when you assume.....

CanadaElectronic Processing
I found that EP was very easy, but noticed that things took longer at the interview. They had to input quite a bit of information and check documents against their information. So in that way, it slows you down a bit, but a few minutes is nothing compared to a possible few weeks in the whole process.

CanadaElectronic Processing

Valerie - after the BODY of the OPTIN email -
I suggest you make a brief sentence about WHY yer not including that DS-3032.
I can't remember reading about someone doing NVC EP with an attorney (doesn't mean it didn't happen :D , but... )

Good Luck!

I'm a bit worried about this because you do have an attorney, technically anything that comes from or goes to the NVC should be to/from your attorney, unless you file a new DS-3032 with the US Citizen as the contact.

Are you using the attorney for this stage? If not, I'd file a new DS-3032 with the USC as the agent and send the Optin email to avoid any confusion and to possibly speed up the process. Attorneys are well known to let paperwork sit if they don't deem it top priority. I used to work for attorneys, (not immigration) but I'm sure they are mostly all the same in this respect.

Yea... I don't want to cause them any worry at all, I'll just say things will be fine. It really isn't my problem and why cause them to worry more? They are hiring a lawyer too so I'll leave it up to the guy with the degree to tell them what's right and what's not.

It's so funny though how people just assume they know how the process works. When Mike first left Canada and we began the K1 visa process, I expressed to my friends how much I missed him and they were like: "Well why not just move there and marry him" as if it were so simple.

Do these people not look up the avenues? I wouldn't just show up on a foreign countries doorstep expecting to get in... I'd explore my options.

But I guess that's what separates us from the not-so-bright ones eh. laughing.gif

My hubby and I used to be one of those not-so-bright ones. Friends of ours went through the K1 process and that's how we found VJ. Boy did we have a very rude awakening!

Best of luck to your friends.... they will need it.

Pretty much the exact same for us:

1- What I did for a living.
2- What my USC fiance did for a living
3- Is he aware about the situation with his insurance (how his OHIP goes away when he moves to the USA and do I have health insurance when I move?
4- What am I planning on doing for a living once I move to the US and is eligible to work (after AoS, etc.).
5- When and how did we meet - she noticed that we had been dating a LONG time and mentioned that...
6- When and how did he propose.
7- When am I moving?
8- When are getting married?

The interview was about 5-10 minutes... It was very quick. The people before us though were in there for like 20 minutes so I have no idea what they were talking about for so long....

I did not know about his OHIP going away. If for any reason later on we decide to move to Canada does that get reinstated? He will be covered under my insurance starting in January, but this is still good info to know....

You are no longer qualify for OHIP if you take up Perm Res outside of Canada, or are out of the Country for more than 6 months...it has to be reinstated...you go into a Health Canada office to do this... and yes, there's a grace period.

The thing that always gets me, is the grey period in between....when you leave Canada, but have not adjusted status yet, you really have no status, so technically one would assume coverage would still be available. Many of us get travel insurance to cover the gap until we get added on to our SO's benefits... but even this is not the most proper coverage, as technically we are not traveling...traveling would constitute the intent of returning to Canada....it's a very grey area...and i'm sure if someone became very ill or hospitalized, they would look very closely at this...I am always curious to see how they would underwrite in such a situation and if coverage would be denied...as far as I know, here on VJ, no one has ever experienced such a catastrophic event while on travel insurance....and hopefully no one ever has to find out. Technically, even without travel insurance and abroad (while in some countries) OHIP would provide some relief in trying to return you to Canada...the travel insurance is a suppliment....outside of this, I am not too clear on the legalities of it all....

ok, that's my two cents for tonight lol

Thank you for the info! Just one more thing I never thought to check on.... My head is spinning again. I've been doing nothing but research on immigration for weeks now, even at work... I don't know how I'm comprehending anything at this point. And he is relying on me to simplize (is that even a word?) things for him since I used to be a legal secretary.... thanks honey!!! blink.gif

CanadaTraveling between Canada & US & Passport Stamps
I always complained that I NEVER got a stamp in my passport when I went into Canada. Air, Car, it didn't matter. Then I drove in with the hubby, then boyfriend and I was flying home the next day, I drove up with him for a preseason lacrosse game or something. I said I'm flying home on such a day. The border guy was like um, you mean tomorrow? It was after midnight, so it was tomorrow. oops8rh.gif So I said yes. He asked me for a copy of my travel plans which I didn't print out. (Mistake #1! Always print that stuff out!) So he was going over my flight plans with me again and said so you are leaving tomorrow, I said weather permitting, yes since there was a snow storm heading in. (Mistake #2! NEVER SAY THAT!) So he pulled me into secondary where they questioned me further and they eventually let me go with a stamp in my passport (Finally!) And now looking at that stamp, I think they gave me a visa because under the stamp is a hand written V with a date six months out from when I entered. I was so excited to finally have that stamp. Something so weird, yet it made me so happy!

My fiance, in Texas, goes in - gets his scaling, polishing and flouoride for $60.00. W.T. F?

I'm in Alberta. Anyone else pay these outrageous fees?

Does your fiance have dental insurance by any chance? Not every employer offers it, but its good to have. Dental work is by no means cheap here in the US either, but dental insurance sure helps a bit.

CanadaBorder crossing with residency card (aka green card)
I cross often at Thousand Islands when I visit my husband in the Toronto area and depending on where he is coming from he usually crosses there as well.

My second trip to see him I had this customs guy, who had a mustache like Lemmy from Motohead and an Irish Accent. I told him I was going to visit a friend for the weekend. He asked me if he was a boyfriend and I said, I'm not sure yet, that is what I'm going to find out. He asked me if he treats me well, and I said he did. He then said, if he doesn't treat you well, bring him to me and I'll take care of him for you. I about laughed by butt off at the border! He let me go right through after that.

My most recent one: I drove home through Thousand Islands yesterday and got this woman customs agent. You know the usual questions, where do you live, where you coming from... I was visiting my husband, we went camping for the weekend. She looked at me like I had 5 heads. Wait, so you live in the states, and he lives in Canada and he visits you sometimes too? I'm thinking is this the first time you ever heard of this? I mean really??? I mentioned we just got married in June and we filed for the CR-1 visa, but it was still in the I-130 stage. QUOTE (trailmix @ Sep 29 2009, 02:53 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Hi,

Where you pay it depends on where you filed. If you filed at the U.S. consulate in Canada, ie Direct Consular Filed - you will pay it the day of the interview.

If you sent your I-130 to USCIS in the U.S. - you will pay it at the NVC stage, before you submit your DS-230 to them.

K1 filers do pay a smaller fee on the day of their interview.

Thank you trailmix! One less thing to worry about... kicking.gif

CanadaFees at Interview in Montreal?
I'm really planning ahead here. I was looking through the sample interview letter on this site: http://travel.state....P-ENGL-0704.pdf and saw that they say: "If you have not already paid them to the National Visa Center, please bring the fees: USD $380.00 per person for immigrant visa processing. You may pay in U.S dollars or Canadian dollars according to the U.S. Government exchange rate in effect on the day of your interview. You may also pay this fee by major credit card."

I also read a review recently where she had to pay fees at the consulate in Montreal, but I think she was a K-1 so not sure if that is different then a CR-1....

So my question is, is this the IV fee bill they are referring to or another fee all together or nothing I need to worry about? huh2.gif helpsmilie.gif

Yes, you hand them in in person at the interview

You need to send them in to the NVC with the DS-230 (IV package) as well.

From LingChe's shortcut:

b. Send your IV Package (USPS Express mail gives tracking and essentially insures delivery)

Below are the package contents:

* BARCODED Cover Sheet (to be printed from web when your status is PAID online for IV bill)

* You OWN cover sheet listing what documents are in the package, so they're easy for the reviewer to locate

* Completed DS-230 part I & II and ONLY part I signed by beneficiary.

* Photocopy of the beneficiary's passport biographic data page.

* Original/certified copy of beneficiary’s birth certificate.

* Original/certified copy of beneficiary’s and petitioner’s marriage certificate.

* Original police certificates of the beneficiary.

* Original/certified copy of military record, if applicable.

* Original/certified copy of divorce decree, death certificate, etc. of previous marriage, if applicable.

Make 2 extra copies of this package. Send 1 copy to the beneficiary

Once everything has been sent in, it's time to wait.

I worked so many jobs in that area and never did the tours they have there.

Huntingdon Valley is a pretty big historic area. I'm really hoping he doesn't have a hard time transitioning into living in the states. He has stayed with me alot over the course of our relationship. He had a great working schedule where he would work 5 days and be off for 5 days so on his days off he would drive the 8 hours and visit with me even if I was working. We even got to see The Tragically Hip at a very small venue in Philly and was so excited to finally see them because "you'd never get tickets in Toronto for a place like this". So he knows my area pretty well and how to get into the city if he wants to explore. He is an explorer at heart and likes to venture off the beaten path to see things so I really don't think it will be an issue for him. His family is scattered between Montreal and New Brunswick so he never really sees them all that much anyway and his/our friends, well, that's only an 8 hour drive away to Toronto for us. good.gif

Reading this thread and the VJ boards in general I'm realizing how lucky we are that we never minded that 8 hour drive back and forth and that no matter what happens and who moves where, I think we will both be comfortable wherever we are as long as we have each other.

Now if only we can get there... . whistling.gif

PA is much like Ontario, they have a liquor control board.

This is true, but they are starting to sell beer in certain supermarkets, but under bar rules, which means you can purchase up to 2 six packs at a time. So if you need more, you take your purchase to the car and go back in for more. There is one market by me in Lansdale that has that, and I got a flyer in the mail recently about a Wegmans opening up in Collegeville soon that will have a restaurant where you can buy beer to drink in the store and I believe for take out as well.

Right around the corner from where I live I have a "drive through" beer distributor. I took the hubby through it once and he just looked like a little kid at Christmas. You mean you just tell them what you want, they go get it and put it in the car for you, you pay and leave and there's no line? REALLY? That's so cool! All I could say is, um yeah and I looked at him like he had 3 heads. Then I realized I grew up with places like this and since Ontario has nothing even remotely like this its going to be new and different for him. So now when he gets like that I just smile, chuckle a bit, wink at him and call him a nutbar.

Thanks all! This place rocks, everyone is so helpful!

Im sure I will come up with some more questions between now and then. (Leaving Dec. 19)

One question I can think of now.. I have never flown before! And during that time of year I can only imagine it will be pretty busy.. is there a preferable time to depart/arrive to try and avoid some of the congestion?

Since you are going to Pearson, I would suggest arriving around noon or after 7pm and leaving either very early morning, or from noon to 3 pm or after 7 pm. From my experience, that airport is in an extreme high traffic area and to avoid being stuck in traffic I would avoid any flight times that are between 8 - 10 am and from 2 - 7 pm.

I hope for you that its a nice clear day when you land. You may get to see Niagara Falls, the Skyway and the CN Tower depending on how they fly in. All great things to see from the air and later the ground! good.gif

Good luck!

CanadaThings you do with your spouse / S.O. while apart
We talked on Yahoo IM for hours a day. He used to work nights and was never all that busy, so he would log in when he woke up in the early afternoon, while I was at work and we would chat, then we would talk between his jobs at his work. We never really had much time apart. He would work 5 days 12 hour shifts, then drive the 8 hours to visit on his days off. Or if we had something to do up there, I drove up there for the weekend. My job now I can work from home if I need to, so if I plan a trip to Canada, I'll leave on Wednesday or Thursday night, work from "home" for the rest of the week and still have time with him. Now that he's unemployed, he's been spending more time down here and going back home for a week or two. So its getting me used to having him around (which is good since I've never had a roommate or anything ever) and he gets to adjust to life here a bit before he is here permanently.

So now when we are apart, we still talk on messenger during the day. He'll call me from time to time when I get real cranky and just want to hear his voice and when he's not near a computer if he is visiting his family in Saint John, NB we text each other just to say I miss you or I love you. We send messages on facebook and sometimes read articles on websites together that we find mutually interesting.

I go crazy if I don't see him at least once a month. I can't imagine what people go through going months or years without seeing their loved ones. I go nuts after 2 weeks! I'm just a spoiled girl. What can I say??? whistling.gif good.gif

Thanks! That's my Spazzy. They both used to love laying in that sink. I haven't seen them in there for awhile except to drink water from it... they must not fit anymore... Whoops! Time for a bigger sink! innocent.gif

Mephys, very cute kitties!

CanadaThe pet thread!
I love this thread! The hubby would call me a nutbar and roll his eyes at me for oooh-ing and aww-ing over all the pics.

Here's my little bundles of joy.

Cosmo my little 21 pound beefcake of a boy (the white and grey one) will meow at you whenever you cough or sneeze as if to say god bless you. He loves belly rubs and sometimes sleeps on his back begging to be pet.

Spaz is my little 14 pound sunggle bunny girl. On her terms of course! She does not like her belly touched at all. But if you pet her chin she will bury her head in your hand then jackrabbit your hand with her back feet.

They are in my profile pic too when I first got them 3 years ago.

I rescued these guys when they were found in the basement of an apartment complex. And in return they saved me from a great depression from a broken heart at the time. They are great company when hubby isn't around. He's not an animal lover, or so he says, yet he is starting to ask about them when he is not here and pets them whenever they are not in his way... whistling.gif

haha Giroux and my brother were pretty big rivals in the QMJHL a couple years ago. It always feels good when I can see a young player develop like that.

The National Lacrosse League is still around. Syracuse is not in the league anymore, but the Toronto Rock are still in it and the Philadelphia Wings who play out of the Wachovia Center along with 10 or so other teams. The Rock will be in Philly on April 3rd. The Wings home opener is January 16th. Now that baseball is over, this is our next big thing to look forward to. Good to know! My brothers always played lacrosse until they both moved away to play junior hockey. I LOVE box lacrosse and spent a lot of my summers watching it as a kid.

No one gets box lacrosse here where I live..in fact, they don't even know it exists..just field lacrosse.

Box lacrosse is so exciting! Its not all that huge here, but I'm happy to have a team that has been around now for 24 years. I met most of my friends and my husband through lacrosse so I will always be thankful for the sport. I don't know about you, but I always found field lacrosse extremely less exciting. There is something to be said about having 12 guys in a confined space (including goalies) running around like crazy tossing a ball around and beating the ####### out of each other. good.gif I love it!

Damn Yankees! I'm working from home today and that's all that's on tv... Time to put a movie on..
