PhilippinesNon-Catholic to marry Catholic Filipina in US
Hi my wife and I looked at doing a Catholic wedding and it appears to be much easier if you are both Catholic if not then the next easiest is that the non Catholic has never been married and divorced. If you have had a divorce and want to get married in a Catholic church you have to go through a lengthy annullment procedure. To me being non Catholic and divorced it basically means you have to pay the Church a lot of money. It also takes more time than most people have.

If the two of you are already married and want to just go through the motions again in a Catholic church and renew your vows there are still some hoops you have to jump though but it may be possible. You need to find a friendly Priest.

Since some of the vacc are more than one round it is good to get some of them early even before medical at St. Lukes. I think as part of the medical they only do the first round of shots but others may have different experience.

Doesn't getting married in the US and then filing a Report of Marriage with the Philippine Embassy or Consulate have the same effect? A few months after you report tthe marriage, you should be able to request a copy of your Philippine marriage contract from NSO.

It has the same Legal effect.. but its more an issue with with personal preference. Having a license that is signed by her priest and witnessed by her family is what we would like to have... but without scrapping an almost finished K-1 I cant seem to find a way to do that...

It appears she is putting a little bit too much faith in a Phil Marriage Lic. I think if you explained it at the Embassy and say you want the LC2M I think they would give it to you. You can marry your wife as many times as you want and there is nothing illegal about it as long as you are honest. You can then get the Marriage lic and have it in hand and filled out by the Priest and Sponsors. She does realize that she will be filling a document with her gov that says she is not married to get the Marriage Lic. If she does this it could be construed that you did not have a bona fide marriage in the US and you just did it for visa. You can instruct the Priest / Church to not file the Lic with the NSO and it will never be recorded there but you will have that priceless Lic your Wife wants. If she wants an NSO certified copy I don't know as the church would have to file the actual marriage lic after the wedding to get that. If you do not notify the NSO of the marriage in US then it would probably go through but you would have a different Marriage date on file.

It sounds like your wife to be really does not understand all the implications. Should not the marriage be about you and her and making your oath to God? You need to ask her if she will honor and accept the marriage if you have it in the US? If not then you need to change your plans as the commitment you are making may not mean the same to her as the one you are making. Anyway that is my 2 cents.

Well since the time I oroginally started this.. she and I have talked this out and she now understands that once we register our marriage with the phillipine embassy here in the US then our marriage will then be recognized there as well.. and she is good with that..

btw thanks for your input.. and I totally agree!

Glad to hear you worked it out. In my case I am going back to the Phil next year to have a renewing of vows and the whole big church thing. It means a lot to the woman ( they typically only get married once and want to have some large ceremony with the family) but I think most of us guys look at it as a big drain of funds that could be used for other things that are more practical.

Wish someone would start a thread on getting married in Manila as it is expensive to get married there even if you are already married ha.

PhilippinesProblem with FedEx and customs
Thought I would relay a problem I recently had with FedEx and customs. I know some people send money and gifts to the Philippines and wanted you to have a heads up. I recently sent copies of all the visa documents to my wife and the package was held up in customs and at FedEx. It just makes me wonder why the people in the Philippines put up with so much corruption in their govenment. My wife was not allowed to have the package delivered until she agreed to pay a very high so called customs fee which amounted to over 3,000 pesos. Much more than the value of the package which was mostly just documents and pictures. This was on top of the cost of sending the package in the first place. Of course she got a very plain looking receipt that really does not show anything and does not say who the "customs offical" was that assigned the charges.

It appears that no matter what we have had to do to get paperwork, marriage Lic or whatever someone always is asking for a hand out or else they will not give it to us.

PhilippinesInterview questions asked? experiences? advice?
I would not say it is a 3 minute interview it could be 10 minutes or 3 hours. The Embassy in Manila states that it is up to the petitioner to prove it is a legitimate relationship. Anything in your package that sets off any bells will be what they concentrate on. Questions like: ( don't answer I am just listing)

How did you meet? What were you doing there? Have you been divorced and How long ago was it? Did you have intimate relations? What does he do? Tell me about his family? Where does he live? What are his hobbies? What are your plans for marriage? What do you do ( entertainment or employment in bars may be issue )?. Show ability to support? What is both of yours travel history? Do you currently have any relatives in the US.? What does he drive? What is is favorate food? Color? Where will you live? Do you plan to work? How long have you known each other? How old is he? Where did he go to school? Does he have any children? Will anyone else live with you? How often do you talk? What do you talk about? What is going on in US (news)? What is his phone number? and anything else they care to ask... If they suspect something they will attack quickly with that and see if you can give them a suitable answer.

Philippinesplane tickets
Philippine law states that the ticket has to be issued in the Philippines if the flight starts there. Some people purchase the ticket online and then get it issued before they leave at the airport.

In my case I was not able to since I booked the flight on American Airlines and they were fined in the past for not following their procedure. I paid for the flight and everything and then a few hours latter AA sent me an email saying they could not issue the ticket. It was a bit of a hassle but I was able to purchase the ticket and there is an office in Manila that can print an American Airlines ticket. My wife showed up and paid the taxes for the ticket when it was printed. The problem I had was that AA does not have a ticket counter at the airport so I had to get it done this way.

PhilippinesSome Questions on Advance Medical Exam at St. Lukes
You have no way of knowing if you still have any relatives in the US or not. If you do not have any contact with them how do you know they are even there? I would put no relatives or non that I know of. It is a question they almost always ask at the interview and sometimes they suspect that the relatives are arranging you to meet someone so you can join them.

PhilippinesMarry in USA or Philippines?
If you love her I think most women would want to get married in their country. You do have to plan on staying in the country for two weeks as there is a 10 day waiting period and you have to go to a marriage class, get marriage lic and so on. Understand that most Filipino ladies have a very strong commitment to marriage and consider it is for life. Make sure she understands what life is like in US.

If you are both unsure how things will be with each other in the US the K1 is what you want. The K1 is not easier in my mind and there will be things you have to do when she gets here.

I did the dual route K3 and CR1 and the CR1 is easier and I ended up not going with the K3. The K3 is more expensive. My wife could of gotten her visa about 2 months sooner but when you look at what all is involved the CR1 is the one I went with. If you are going to help support her while the visa is being processed and you are married you will save a little on your taxes by being married but don't use that to make your decision.

In any case you should make a trip or two over there to help establish the relationship and decide how you both feel about spending your life together. You will need to document the trips and get to know her and her family and she will need to learn as much as possible about yours.

PhilippinesFilipina filed for divorce
If you are here on a K1 visa and then married in the US and you are now filing divorce once it is final you can remarry. The issue is can you stay in the country? Most likely not. There is a two year conditional status on your visa and that has to be removed by your husband who you are now divorcing. If that status is removed you can stay in the country. If it has not been removed then your ex may notify the gov. It all depends if you have had that status removed or not. Even though you have divorced you can casue problems for your ex if you remain in the country as he agreed to take care of you for a length of time so you do not become a charge of the state.

PhilippinesWhat to do?

Thanks, now I understand why so many divorce. Just because she said she loves her ex, I never read from the OP that she told the OP that she wants to become a USC, divorces him, and take his money. I think you are making that up?

Hey she has a heart and her heart is feeling for her ex. Maybe she said she loves her ex to get some attention from him. You don't know women.

I think they should go back but both need to be careful.

For once, he is too much jealous. But at the same time she needs to take her place of a wife and give him a bit more respect and let the feeling that she feels for her x to banish bit by bit.

End of my advice.

Just because she she said she loves her Ex!!!! There is probably a lot more than that we don't know. What would be enough for you? I am not making stuff up when it is pretty clear the only reason the girl got married was to be able to have a life in America. Now that she is here she wants her cake and eat it too. If she was a real woman instead of sneeking around she should of been honest and told him that she really still loved someone else and wants to be with him.

Please do not give us any more of your advice. We know you will side with the woman no matter what she does. I am happily married thank you. You have a very low opinion of marriage if you think someone should marry someone when they are in love with someone else. I know there is no divorce in the Phillipines and you just separate and take another man or woman and have children with them and think that is okay since you are not divorced. It is not a marriage when only one person is making the commitment. If he takes her and her lies back he is just being young and stupid and he will be going through this again at another point in time. Some of us here want him to know that even though things are bad they will get better and he will find someone that truly deserves his love. If he takes her back I will still wish him the best but the odds are way against things working out for him the way that he would like.

You are living in a dream world. In the real world she told an ex boy-friend she loved him and he caught her in the act. Send her sorry cheating A** back to the Philippines. They have only been married for 9 months!!! He gave this girl his heart and he took the time, energy and money to bring her to the US. She would love to stay in the US get her citizenship divorce the OP take the money and then bring her love to the mainland. I would not even give her a chance to have that opportunitiy. There are boatloads of good women out there that he can fall in love with. Why should he waste his time on her? This is the time to suck it up and put your big boy pants on and move on. He will be glad he did when he finds someone that will treat him as well as he treats her.

In my own experience... I chatted with my ex bf too on facebook before... Bcoz i had this feeling of a need to have a good closure to the relationship we had so i can really move on. I never really had the chance to talk to him when i was still in the philippines. But i never said i love him still or showed any feelings bcoz i am already married...we chatted once and thats it, true that once they know your already here they will try to sweet talk to you but its really up to the person if he/she will get tempted to it. Some people get confuse to thier feelings and will try to go back to thier past and if you will choose your past and still keep the present then you are already cheating...once a cheater always a cheater and that is a proven fact.

Show her the door. Good grief you have been married only a short time and already this is happening to you. I am sure you did not sign up for this. You can do better. She does not deserve you after everything you have done.

PhilippinesLiving in Manila

For a modest two bedroom condo/apartment expect to pay 30,000p ( or $700-800 usd ) monthly in most of metro Manila. You mention family of 5 so my guess is you will want 120 sq meters unless you do not mind living on top of each other. I will give a side by side of my budget at end of 2011 for living in Cebu which is no longer cheap as it was many years ago. Add 50% to everything for Manila except housing you will need to double. I had a gf, 2 kids and helper. So feeding family of 5

Rent: $250 for two bedroom condo/townhouse- 1000 square feet

Electric $120 running 1 AC bedroom unit 12-14 hours a day

Water $15

Cable: $22 (some in apartments pay for cable)

Cell Phone: $60 a month. (I had a business).

Internet: $20

Private school for one 70 monthly plus transportation $30= $100........... Manila double per child. My friend is supporting his step children and wow expensive in Manila.

Their Groceries (filipino): $300 a month.

My Groceries (buying western items/meat etc) $50 ( I ate filipino but also ate out one meal daily.)

I recall my budget was about $850 for everything above.

I had a motor cycle. Transportation will cost you a lot in Manila unless you jump jeepnes.

I would say $1500 budget for you in Manila will allow you to live similar to middle class Filipinos.

Better count on 3000 / month to live like you do in the US. Makati is not cheap and outside Manila you better count on 2000/mo. It is starting to get expensive to live in the Philippines.

PhilippinesOnline matchmaking to be criminalized under proposed bill

I like the way the US kind of looks at this.  As long as you are not paying to meet someone it is not a matchmaking site.  With the corruption in the Phil no doubt it might be used to extract money or bribes.  There are already laws against this in the Phil.  This new law may blur the lines between legal and illegal activity.

Online matchmaking to be criminalized under proposed bill

ABS-CBNnews.com
Posted at 08/19/2013 3:48 PM | Updated as of 08/19/2013 3:48 PM

MANILA, Philippines - In an effort to protect the image of the Filipino women, a new bill (House Bill 222) seeking to amend the Anti-Mail Order Bride Law will criminalize matchmaking of Filipinas and foreign nationals on internet websites.

Under Republic Act 6955 or the Anti-Mail Order Bride Law of 1990, mail-order bride services are illegal in the Philippines.

But according to Citizens' Battle Against Corruption (CIBAC) party-list representative Cinchona Cruz-Gonzales, author of HB 222, mail-order bride services are now flourishing in different websites and have largely replaced traditional paper-cased classifieds.

"A new era of professional prostitution or high end pornography through the web was born which downgrades the integrity not only of Filipino women, but of the country as a whole," said Cruz-Gonzales.

"Filipino women are gravely abused by syndicates who conduct business and make women a commodity to be bought either through the Internet, websites or other written materials," she added.

Under HB 222, violators will face an imprisonment of 20 years and will have to pay a fine of not more than P100,000.

"If the offender is a foreigner, he shall be immediately deported and barred forever from entering the country after serving his sentence and payment of fine," warned Cruz-Gonzales.

The bill also penalizes persons who advertise, publish, print or distribute any brochure, flier or any propaganda material including those distributed and made available through the Internet.

Likewise, it shall be unlawful to use the postal service and the Internet to promote the mail order bride business according to the measure.

Filipino women who voluntarily engaged themselves in matchmaking activities and those who patronize the mail-order bride business as an accessory to the offense charged will also be penalized.

The manager, editor in chief, or advertising manager of any newspaper, magazine, television, radio station and other media including those of internet websites are likewise prohibited from allowing or consenting to the unlawful acts mentioned.

Under the RA 6955, any person found guilty of violating the law shall suffer an imprisonment of not less than six years and one day but not more than eight years, and a fine of not less than P8,000 but not more than P20,000.

First thing since we were already married was to get the SS card and an official ID from the DMV.  Get the book for written part of the driving test and after you pass that you can get your learners permit.  Added my wife to credit card.  Added her to my medical insurance (very important to have insurance).  Made her beneficiary of life insurance policy.  Added her to joint bank account.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresUSC overseas, tourist visa denied

Hi everyone,

So here's the deal, it's a bit complicated, and I'll lay it all out.

I'm a US citizen who has been living for the last 10 years in Europe, and have been engaged to a Russian for two years. We had planned on getting married in Cyprus next month. This summer we decided to visit the US, and her tourist visa was denied. I ended up with a great job offer, and am now moving to the US, and would obviously like my wife to join me.

So how does this work? Apply for a CR1 visa after getting married and wait it out? Can she visit on a tourist visa in the meantime?

Once you get to the US you have two choices. You can try to get a fiancee visa and once it is processed you have 90 days once she enters the US to get married. You can go over there and get married and file for a spousal visa when you get back to the US. For both she can not go with you till the visa is approved. You will need to show detailed information of a relationship. At least that is how I see it. There may be others more knowledgable than me that can respond. As far as a tourist visa I would not think it would be that easy for someone from Russia but again others may have more information on that.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresNEWLY MARRIED to an American -- WHAT TO DO FIRST?? WHAT VISA TO GET??

So when you guys filled out the I-130 form, did you put her maiden name as her middle name?

She did use her maiden name as her middle name and also kept her previous middle name which means her first name is two words now and then her maiden name and lastly her married name.  I told her that was not the way it is done here in the US but that is what she wanted.  It can be a cause of confusion but you have a right to your name.

We got the same visa you are going after and I also married in the Philippines.  Go to the guide section.  Find the forms you need to fill out.  Search for answers to your questions and if needed ask.  All the information you need is here.  It is a long process.

You need to update your passport to your new married name.  That is what my wife did first.  She kept her name style that is used in the Phil.

QUOTE (BRB @ Jul 27 2009, 10:19 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I did this just a couple of months ago. In my case they did ask for copies of my divorce papers. You also need to fill out a form stating where you are staying with your passport number and other info on it like an emergency contact. I would suggest going early in Manila. Pick a number and wait. It will take a couple of hours or so if you go early. I think they call the Gate Entrance 2 or 3 and you want to ask to go to the Citizen Service Center. It is good if you have your significant other with you as you can be denied and they sometimes ask questions. I think it helps if you dress in good taste.

I also needed to get some documents notorized and that can be done there also. A notorized document outside the embassy may not be considered official in the US unless it is signed at the Embassy by a consulate.

I guess I can add some more. It takes 10 days after you get your lic before you can get married. Since I was only able to take a min amount of time off work I wrote a letter for her to give to the lady to pay the fee for the lic and she was able to get some of the paperwork done before I arrived. I still had to go to the courthouse with the Legal Cap to Marry, sign the Marrige Lic, go the seminar and be there 10 days but she said me sending the letter helped her as we went through the process very quickly once I got there. I also suggest you make copies of everything at the courthouse they give you.

I also needed to get some documents notorized and that can be done there also. A notorized document outside the embassy may not be considered official in the US unless it is signed at the Embassy by a consulate.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresTaxes around the corner
I know about filing the letter pub 519 for nonresident spouse to be treated as resident for tax purposes. My guestion is though the first time you file taxes do you file for the ITIN (form W-7) with your joint tax return ( married filing jointly) if your wife is still living in the Philippines and does not have a SS# or ITIN number yet for filing purposes?

Can you attach the letter as stated on pub 519 or do you need to do both?

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Procedures?? About Philippine Vaccines ( Medical )
Thanks

You mean the medical fee includes the shots also? This is the first time I have heard that. I still think I will have her get the longer duration ones to get them out of the way in the Phil.

IR-1 / CR-1 Spouse Visa Process & Procedures?? About Philippine Vaccines ( Medical )
Thanks for the feedback. She is getting the vaccinations now and she will be able to present the documentation at the medical interview. I think it will be cheaper for her to get them there than here in the states. She can get the HPV for about 3500 pesos ... I think. The HEPA A & B will run about 10,000 pesos for the full series of each. If anyone else has any information please share.
