Middle East and North Africaalgeria K1 visa... this is a problem
QUOTE (jimmal @ Jun 16 2009, 11:51 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Let me try this again...

Hello everyone... I am new and wanted to get some ideas about my situation. I am going to Algeria next week to see my fiancee. We will be doing the K1 visa. I plan on sending the paperwork in november so she should have the interview in march or april. then, I hope to arrive in June and we can leave together. Well.. that is the plan for now.

Here is the problem... her family is very traditional and will not let her leave without being married first. So, we are planning to marry next year in June. After we marry in june... we will leave algeria with her fiancee visa hopefully. I really don't know any other way to do it. If you have any ideas.. PLEASE feel free to share. Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear that u r in that situation i was in it for a few times at the end i found it is not worth it in the past i went through the same thing if u desire to keep her expect to live yr life for her whole family what ever her parents want is her 1st priority even is she here in u.s what ever her parent wants and needs u better prepare to be able to support all else u will have a problem with her u guys will fight over and over mainly it is all cultural conflicts matter of time u will get tired i spend over 3 yrs already no matter what that won't change there mentality that is just my past experience i hope u won't have to deal with one I would suggest u to get marry there but not get involve with any legal document if u do a k1 visa atleast u get a chance to feel how she can adopt the u.s culture and to deal with her family if it doesn't work out it will be simple if u r legally marry there u end up have to go back there to do any divorce paper it is a night mare take some time to think about it love is one thing but being stuck in the middle in between 2 generations that is not as easy to deal with as people think good luck

hi I used to help the california office to help translate for the INS, i was told that it is better of to file the paper work your self rather than having the lawyer get involve, when the lawyer gets involve it might lead the ins to think u might be doing some thing that is ............. unless there is a language barrier that u really need help on, other wise try not to have a lwayer involve.

calendar days... much easier logic than trying to calculate working days into the system

if it is calendar days that means it is almost 4 months already, does it mean some thing wrong? I still have not got my Noa2 yet.

Let me help. STOP calling USCIS! It is called the misinformation line.

When the USCIS completes a petition they send to the Department of State, it is out of their handsa nd they have NO SAY in where it goes or how it gets there. For them to give you ANY answer can be nothing more than speculation, you are asking the wrong people. Like most government employees, they do not say "I don't know, we don't handle that" instead they give a false answer and you go away. Mission accomplished.

ALL approved petitions go to the NVC, no exceptions. It is the path the Department of State has established for processing petitions into visas.

Thanks

Between NOA1 and NOA2 is such a torcher, is the unknown that drives avery body crazy

Unfortunately there is nothing you can do until your 6 month is up. However, the bright side is, once everything gets passed through USCIS, then your next step is the NVC (which should be fairly fast for K1 Visa) and then AIT is very efficient. You usually wait less than 30 days from packet 3 - packet #4 to interview date =)

wow you are very lucky

I don't know why only ours, sent petition on 6 April, get phone call three days later say we need submit another form. Mailed to them again on around 22 April, however, we get NOA2 on 6 June which said our petition was received on 24 May.

I don't know where our petition was during 22 Apirl to 24 May. As we definitely mailed it by Fedex...

Now we are stuck....should be two months ealier...

Don't know what we can do? Feel very disappointed about US government and very unfairly treated. crying.gif

Look at it this way some thing is better nothing, by the way u still in NOA1 if u get a 797c noted that U approved then that will consider NOA2

I have just received approval on my I-129f, and just got a letter in the mail today explaining that I could also file for 1-824 now.

So...my question is. Do I need to file this I-824 form. I've been on the USCIS website, and googling it but can't get a clear answer. If I do need to file this I'm not so sure what "category" I would need to do it for. My Fiancee lives in Vienna, Austria where the US Embassy is located.

Any help would be much appreciated.

And the coach has resigned over the loss. The latest thing is that the captain and another of the players were in a club less than 48 hours before the next match and then got into an "exchange" with some reporters. So...that's been our experience. I'm hearing Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana are the favorites.

What does everyone think as far as the winner?

I'll be traveling definitely to Tambacounda where SO lives. We are getting married in Thiés. We will be visiting other areas as finances allow. I sell tools for women so am hoping to sell lots this month in anticipation of Christmas. I have email blasted everyone I know letting them know I have great deals on my inventory. We were also in Oprah magazine this month so hopefully I will have lots of online sales too. What is MedEx? I have a state insurance plan, but am not sure if it covers me out of the country.

Wow, sounds like you have a nice business going. Congratulations!

As for the medical insurance, my PPO doesn't cover me outside of the country so I used MedEx which is specific travel medical insurance. You can look on their website to see what they covered. What I do know is that they will get you to proper medical facilities if there is none located near where you are. One of my former travel companions used them some years ago when he contracted a strain of malaria that couldn't be treated where he was. His story sold me right away.

You are quite welcome! I would bring jeans, one pair, maybe two if you have room in your bag. If they are light weight denim, even better. Good thing with getting fitted for your dresses first. Sometimes people want to do something nice and *think* they know your size. LOL That never works for me!

WG:

Well...this is the thing with dress...my philosophy when I travel is to respect the culture. And to be frank with you, sometimes men don't really understand "how to dress." They will say to wear whatever makes you comfortable, but in reality that might not be the proper thing to do. Are all of his friends Christian, or are some Muslim? I ask for this reason: Let's say while in Tambacounda and you are visiting a home, and the family there is very traditional, you don't want to roll in with arms and legs uncovered. At least this is my personal feeling. You just don't want to find yourself in a uncomfortable situation. Since this is your first trip I think you should stick with long skirts and maybe short-sleeved or even 3/4 length shirts. If your SO is having dresses made for you, then those should be fine and will likely help you to feel more comfortable. Make sure to tell him to have the dresses made with the wrap style skirt since these fit pretty much any size. Take different types of lightweight shirts (short sleeved, tanks, long sleeved) and as you assess the situation, you can modify accordingly.

In Dakar, if I wasn't wearing skirts, I did wear jeans and lightweight khakis. Those wrap skirts that they sell on the streets are really handy as well!

It sounds like Omoba gave you an idea of what the situation may be like for you in Senegal. I didn't read through all of the responses so if I ask a question that you already answered I apologize in advance.

Okay....I just deleted everything I wrote because I decided to go back and read your responses. :-) So here is my amended post: My situation when I was first travelling there is different than yours, so I am writing from the perspective of what I would do. Since you will be mostly in Thies and Tambacounda, you should be fine with the amount of $ you are going to bring. But I am saying this w/o the benefit of knowing your personal situation, like whether you are handling all of the expeses. Whether or not you are really doesn't matter, but just make sure to get a firm handle on what needs to be paid for prior to leaving home so you'll be prepared for the costs. I totally agree with what reeses said about letting your S.O. handle the $$, especially since this is your first visit.

The exchange rate seems to have gotten better over the last few months so I think it is now 475-500CFA to every 1USD. What I usually do is take a certain amount of $$ with me, exchange it immediately after arrival and then leave the rest in my bank account at home for emergencies. There are ATMs in downtown Dakar, usually there is at least one working. Or if all else fails you can use the ATM at the Sofitel in downtown, right off the Place d'Independence. I don't know about the ATM situation in Thies. There is also a Bureau De Change in downtown that I use. If your fiance is picking you up from the airport you can exchange money there because they give you a pretty good rate, but watch your back because sometimes they want to take a hefty "commission."

With regard to clothing, I think that you should be conservative if you are travelling to Tambacounda. And by conservative I mean cover your legs and arms, but especially your legs. In Dakar and probably in Thies as well, you should be alright in capris or something like that, but I would stay away from wearing shorts or short skirts.

I think Omoba said this already but never, ever leave home w/o tissues or toilet paper. You definitely don't want to be caught in a bind!

Feel free to PM me if you want.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

I really should READ more closely! LOL! Upon first reading, I understood that you were planning to bring $1000. But now after closer reading I see that you were advised to bring $1000. Personally, I don't think I ever spent that much in Senegal and I stayed there longer than you will be on some occasions, but I can see how having access to that amount might make you feel comfortable that you have backup...just in case. Refer back to what Omoba said that she travelled with, and I think that amount would probably serve you well, especially since you will not be in Dakar most of the time.

Yeah, I had to find that information right when I was thinking about or else I'd probably never get around to posting it. It's good that you mentioned the prices in Saly, Aisha. I stayed in the (ahem) lesser accomodations, so the price tag wasn't too high for me. But any place catering to tourists is going have a premium on everything. I found the information for you. The name of the place where I stayed is La Ferme de Saly. It's owned by a European couple and the food was really good as I recall! As I said, there was building of condos with a pool that was close to opening up when I was there the last time, so I am sure it's totally operational by now. Also the correct spelling is Saly Portudal. Just wanted to let you know that if you want to do an accurate Google search. You should have a great time there if you decide to stay in the area!

Africa: Sub-SaharanSali Portugal in Senegal
I stayed in Saly for a day or two and it was nice and quaint. The beaches threre are great!! Can't remember off the top of my head the name of the place where I stayed but it was fairly nice for a day or two trip. There was a condo type establishment just opening next door to where we stayed which was nice and modern and would probably fit the bill for a longer stay. I'll try to go back through my pictures and see if I can find the name of the place. If I find it I'll post the info for you!

I could try and make it. Depends on the weekend of course, but the later in November the better.
