I lived in Turkey for 5 months - Istanbul for a month and Kirikkale, about an hour outside of Ankara for the other 4. Most of my cooking I did with common foods you can find anywhere - rice, cous-cous, pasta, potatoes, vegetables, fruit, beans, chicken, beef, eggs, cheese, etc. I also learned a lot from my fiance. There weren't any foreign markets in Kirikkale, but I'm sure you could find some in Istanbul. Try visiting the site www.mymerhaba.com and asking around on the forums there. Here's a link to a Turkish recipe website that I like a lot - everything is in English. http://www.turkishcookbook.com/ I just made lahana sarmasi (rolled cabbage leaves) and biber dolmasi (stuffed peppers) the other week and they turned out pretty good. Turks have a spice that is a lot like the spice we use to season taco meat...not sure what it is called though. You can find soft tortilla shells/wraps in some stores (try Migros) and you can always make your own salsa. You can make pretty much anything from scratch. I couldn't find brown sugar to bake cookies...but I made my own w/ white sugar and a little molasses - worked great!

Thanks for the links. I'll definitely check out that recipe website. Are they authentic recipes or the Americanized versions? The good thing about Turkey is i'm forced to use more fresh produce and make proper meals from scratch instead of relying on pre-packaged #######. However, more than anything I want to find maple syrup for the Hubster. biggrin.gif I bought some Eggos and maple syrup when we lived in Dubai and he got addicted. I've found waffle makers here so I could make some home-made ones using a Norwegian recipe I have, but I can't find any syrup here. Poor Hoom. He might have to wait a year to have proper waffles. Me, i'm fine just making a pit-stop at the bakery to pick up some baklava, yummy. I don't know why he likes waffles with syrup so much better than baklava which is originally a Persian invention. He says he'd be fine having waffles and pizza every day but I'd like a little more variety.

When I was living in Turkey I watched the shows Menekse ile Halil (drama/romance), Avrupa Yakasi (comedy), Elveda Rumelli (about a family living in Ottoman times), and Kavak Yelleri (drama/romance) with Onur...

So you lived in Turkey...for how long? Hoom and I came to Istanbul-Avrupa just to get married but when we saw how much cheaper the apartments are here compared to Dubai we decided to stay here until he can get his greencard. How did you handle the cooking situation? Due to Turkey's protectionism I'm finding it difficult to find a range of foreign products that I'm familiar with. I haven't started a language class so if I bought a Turkish cookbook in Turkish it would be difficult to translate each recipe. It's easy to find German products and a limited number of Swedish products if you go to IKEA but it's not so easy to find Mexican, Asian, American or European goods. Did you ever find any foreign market that sells lots of American & other foreign products?

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresAnkara or Abu Dhabi? (for Immigrant visa applicants from Iran)
We are going through the embassy in Ankara for DCF. You can see our time line below in my signature. The staff can be nitpicky about all the documents and requirements and seemed a bit rude. But I guess it is their job to have a bit of an attitude. They did schedule our interview within 3 months of receiving all our documents. I will update my time line after the interview and say how it went.

Why on earth would you want the K3 visa if you can get the CR-1? The CR1 is about as quick to get and it is less hassle later to deal with.

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresIs the K3 worth it?
QUOTE (Penguin_ie @ Oct 27 2009, 02:14 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
In some countries, the K3 is still a little (2-4 weeks) faster than the CR-1- in many countries, it is not. However, considering how long you wait overall (6-8 months), this really isn't that long, and you trade in the slightly shorter waiting time of being together for alot of hassle, time wasting and money when you get to the USA as you cannot work immediately, have to file AOS etc. So I agree with the majority on this site in saying the K3 is obsolete.

Oh, ok. So the difference is that the K3 is sometimes, but not always quicker but then you have more hassle upon arrival by not being able to work immediately and you have to file AOS, etc. But with the CR1 it 'might' take longer to get the visa but then when you arrive stateside you can work immediately and don't have to file AOS. Am I correct?

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresIs the K3 worth it?
QUOTE (canadian_wife @ Oct 27 2009, 02:49 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
No, you dont' automatically apply for both. After the NOA-1 comes for the I-130 you must file the I-129F. Your I-130 gets taken out of line, matched up with the I-130 and put at the back on the line. Then both petitions are approved at the same time. When we filed, I-129Fs were being approved 6-8 weeks after the stand alone I-130s. So no, it does not save time at all. Plus, it is almost twice as expensive as the cr-1

Good luck.

When doing DCF in Turkey you don't file the I-129f. You send in the I-130, DS230, G325, I864 and all supporting documents at once. Then they schedule your interview and tell you to bring passport, etc. so I don't know what is even on the I-129f. I just noticed that right under the title for the k3 forum it says:
QUOTE
People who file for a K-3 have automatically also filed for a IR1/CR1 Visa (I-130) and can persue that visa if it is approved faster than the K-3.

And under the title for the CR1 forum it says:
QUOTE
Please note that all K-3 applicants have already filed for this visa by default (the I-130 you filed). If this option is faster than the K-3 then you can abandon your K-3 Visa and get this one instead.

K-3 Spouse Visa Process & ProceduresIs the K3 worth it?
I still don't quite understand the difference between the K3 and CR1. When you send in the I130 you've automatically applied for both, no? If one will be faster then you can abandon the one you have for the other. But other than differing processing times, what is the real difference and why don't they just automatically start processing the one that will be quicker? I'm doing DCF in Turkey for the CR-1. I hope that is the best route. I will verify it at the interview in December I suppose.

My fiance interviewed in Ankara three times, First interview they asked him three questions, lasted three minutes. Second time he just turned in his passport, waited a week and no visa, third time like two questions.

He did say they were very rude, he saw one man tear up a lady's paperwork because it was wrong, he waited like all day. So be prepared.

Overall good luck and the process will end soon. We just celebrated our one year anniversary

Congrats on your anniversary. Ours will be a week and a half after the interview.

I read the consulate reviews by people and there were a lot of complaints of rudeness for the Ankara embassy. unsure.gif

Didn't realize there were this many other Iranian filers. I'm really nervous about our interview coming up in December. I keep hearing the staff at the Ankara embassy are really strict and rude. Heck, some of the staff at the Istanbul consulate were kind of rude when I was getting paperwork there before we got married. dry.gif By the way, I'm doing DCF and you can see in my time-line below that I mailed the packet off in early October and our interview is scheduled for mid-December. I have no idea how long it will take after the interview before he gets his visa. Hopefully, not too long.

Interview was yesterday in Ankara. They were doling out AP left and right. They put us on AP and said it would be another month or two til the visa is issued. cray5ol.gif
There was a boatload of Iranians ahead of us and behind us as well. The ones ahead of us all either got AP, an RFE or outright denied. Didn't stick around to find out about the ones after us. We just headed back to the hotel for a consolation drink. One family that won the greencard lottery was absolutely thrilled and grinning from ear to ear to just be put on AP after seeing some denials and RFEs.

Additional Administrative Processing is something most Iranians get put on. Which means it could take months after the interview to receive the visa. When my husband and I went to our interview in Ankara we and every Iranian ahead of us got put on AP or received an RFE. I'm hoping we don't get stuck in AP limbo for much longer but it could take another 6 months. I just wish they could at least give an ETA so we can make plans.
Anyway, hopefully you won't get put on AP. Good luck with everything.

Der Buch: do you not have the USCIS number for your case? I'm not sure what an "embassy case number" is--can you explain where you got this number? The case number the embassy normally uses is the NVC number, meaning that it begins with ABD2009XXXXXX. That number should be plenty for the NVC and plenty for the DOS. If you have your USCIS case number, the NVC should be able to give you an NVC number from it. (Although, I know the NVC processes K-1s and K-3s differently, so I don't know how they assign K-visas numbers.)

I'm doing DCF for the CR1. When I emailed NVC I gave them the case number the embassy gave me which starts with the first 3 letters of the embassy (i.e.:ANK2009XXXXXX). When I emailed the NVC this is the response they gave:
QUOTE
Good Day:
Your inquiry has been received at the National Visa Center (NVC).
The case number provided is not an NVC case number and appears to have
been assigned by the US Embassy/Consulate General. Please contact the
embassy/consulate directly regarding this case.

No. sad.gif When I emailed NVC they told me to contact the embassy. When I emailed the embassy they told me to just go on their website and check each week for our case number to appear. I will try to call DOS on Monday or Tuesday. Would they be able to look up a case if all you have is the embassy case number? Only having the embassy case number is the reason NVC told me to just contact the embassy.

US Citizenship General DiscussionPassport card too?

Since you asked, the passport card is the most important $25 you ever spend in your lifetime.
Why?

As a natural born USC, you can prove your status as a USC by ordering a birth certificate for about $11 as often as you like. You'll have it shortly after.

As a naturalized USC, your Certificate of Naturalization is the equivalent to the birth certificate. If you lose or misplace it, it will not only cost $345 but take anywhere from 12 to 21 months (1 to 2 years!) to replace it.
Thus, it belongs in the bank safe as a last resort disaster backup in case a Tsunami, Earthquake, or wildfire consumed your house and everything in it. If you have nothing left but the clothes on your body, good luck getting a new passport, driver's license or ATM or credit card.

Thus, you will use your passport as a proof of US citizenship. The book is at the safest place at home, unless you travel internationally which is when you have it with you. If you are in a massage parlor in Bangkok and lose your passport, it's nice to have some form of ID with you, which is where the passport card comes into play.
Once you have that, you keep it at a different place than your passport book. I have mine in a document safe at work in my office. Thus, I have 3 independent proofs of citizenship, of which I only use the card, i.e, when going to the SSA, or the DMV, or when I travel to Canada or Mexico or perhaps even Georgia.

What you want to avoid under all and any circumstances is that you have to mail you Certificate of Naturalization again, ever again. If you only have a passport book and lose or damage it, that can happen. If you also have a passport card, it won't.

I stand corrected. I never thought about it like that... Thanks!

US Citizenship General DiscussionPassport card too?

For anyone who applied for both the passport and the card, have you found the card useful? Have you used it for travel within the US when flying or as a useful piece of id otherwise?

Just trying to decide if I should have both....I don't drive, although I have a state id. but it sounds useful.

Most states bordering Canada and Mexico offer enhanced drivers licenses which allow you to do the same thing. The only thing it's really useful for (assuming you already have a passport book) is driving across the border on a whim. However, I'm not a big fan of having more pieces of identify than necessary -- losing your wallet with a passport card in it would be an even bigger nightmare than normal. Just my 2 cents.

Like Tango and sex, getting scammed requires two: one scammer and one person allowing themselves to be scammed.
It just boggles my mind how many people still send money to Nigeria as a processing fee tto get their multi-million dollar check, or subscribe to an Internet virus protection service for only $5 a month, but for 99 years, or believe that Jesus Christ is the son of God, or believe that this magic pill will increase the size of their schlong by 3 inches in 24 hours. All of this is a sign of ignorance and poor education. Luckily, there's a self-help booklet out, that I can't recommend highly enough. The price is only $9.99 and its title is "Don't be an Ididot." The idiot's guide to self de Nile.

To receive it: just send check or Western Union money order to:

Sorry for your troubles. Everyone makes mistakes. Take the advice of muñequita y osito and cancel the transaction (don't feel embarrassed about it - they're in the wrong, not you). Then re-file using the correct link (any government site will also end in .gov). Don't forget to re-file, I seriously wouldn't count on the information you submitted to them getting to USCIS. When you file, include a cover letter concisely stating what happened, and that it's possible an application has already been filed for you). Best of luck.

My husband's oath date is June 3rd! Hooray! Do you all know how many people who you invite to the ceremony? Also, do you know how soon after the ceremony you can apply for a passport?
Thanks and congrats everyone!

I'm pretty sure you can invite as many people as you want (within reason). You can apply for a passport the second you have the naturalization certificate in hand - which the applicant will receive at the end of the ceremony.

Thought I would add the status page at USCIS still reads: "Testing and Interview" as it has for over six weeks. USCIS must not be concerned with keeping the page current.

Ditto.

By the way, congrats to you and Tanya! Didn't mean to steal your thunder by posted right after you...

Had my interview and oath today! :D

Interview was at 8:45am - I got there at 8:15am. I didn't get called until 9:00am and then had to wait another 30 minutes because my attorney (who had just looked over my forms) wasn't present (not that I was waiting for her, but it's a weird rule they need to wait 30 minutes and then you can sign a waiver about not having an attorney present).

Interview was easy... Just wanted tax info, arrest records (underage drinking lol), and ID. Wasn't asked for birth certificates or anything else.

Don't really remember the questions from the civics test but I was only asked 6 so I figure I did pretty well.

Was then told I had passed and that I was scheduled for my oath at 11:20am (one hour later). Ceremony took an hour...

I'M FINALLY DONE!!!!! THANKS FOR KEEPING ME SANE VJ'ERS!!!!! I'm off to apply for my passport!

I'm frustrated with the process ....why would Atlanta be so slow compared to other states>> must be bunch of lazyass employees...

If you track your application online it states the processing time depends on the number of applications before yours. Maybe Atlanta processes a large region.
