Just a random thought. I hate Patrick Roy. I met him once at a sports memorabilia show about 6 years ago. I waited in line with my friend who wanted to get his autograph. I was so delighted to see him get mad and actually try to get me kicked out of the show for mispronouncing his name on purpose rofl.gif

his son is a douche bag.

I've heard that, but I've also heard that about a lot of sons/daughters of great atheletes who go on to play sports.

On another note, Bowflex, I used to love the Nordiques. I had no idea about Quebec or anything, I just loved the way the jersey's looked. I got a peter stasny sweater for x-mas one year, and then, they took off. I just couldn't support them anymore. Funny now that I think of it, I remember when Eric Lindros refused to play for the Nordiques when they drafted him. I hated him for that and always thought he was a douche. Well flash forward to 3 years ago and I am talking hockey with my in-laws. I almost put my foot in my mouth by telling about Lindros. Come to find out my in-laws are related to him blush.gif

Haha you actually would've been fine as he in fact is a huge douchebag Lol. I love how hockey karma got him though. Avs got Forsberg out of that, won 2 cups, and Lindros became a hockey diva, hated by all of his teams, and never won the cup. smile.gif

Forsberg was a diva too. Remember how he whined and whined after McCarty blew him up in the corner in the playoffs? tongue.gif

Haha When a dude gets his spleen removed due to the dirty hits he gets every game I tend to go with their opinion from time to time Lol.

Plus McCarty had no place in the NHL, and his band Grinder sucks too hahahaha

I really haven't been able to get back into hockey since the lockout/strike and the subsequent rule changes really made it less enjoyable for me. I loved the physicallity of it. Don't read fights into that statement though. I enjoy the skill and all, but it's just not the same, it's like watching olympic hockey, it just doesn't do it for me. Now olypmic speed skating, thats another story rofl.gif

Lol There are still some HUGE hits though (Kessel got destroyed the other night) and I actually enjoy a bit more of the 80s style. I would like a little more hitting in front of the net to be allowed so talentless hacks like Holmstrom can't just stand there all day, but it's nice to see players moving around instead of getting hugged like they're visiting their Grandma for Christmas smile.gif

Awesome!! Bill and I were just talking about how cool it would be to go see an Avs game on new years eve, but as you discovered, they're going to be in Detroit! Should be a great game too. The Wings/Avs game we went to see a couple weeks back was probably one of the best games I've ever watched live. We try to see 2-3 games a year, but we normally don't splurge for the lower bowl seats, although its much nicer sitting down there. The seats are bigger and there's more room to stretch!

Bowflex, I'm jealous tongue.gif

Haha don't worry about being jealous, keep in mind I have to visit Detroit to see the game whistling.gif Lol

So I was originally going to hit up Chicago for a few days with my wife and some friends but everything is INSANELY expensive this year (tickets to the hotel parties are about $110-$150 PER person) so my wife and I started looking up different stuff last night. Turns out my Colorado Avalanche will be playing Detroit on New Years Eve smile.gif I'm thinking we'll get some nice lower bowl seats, maybe even behind the bench as I imagine most don't wanna go see a hockey game on the biggest party night of the year. The game will only go til about 10pm at the latest so I could then hit up a nice house party or have one myself. I'm super stoked about going as I've only seen the Avs once and that was a pre-season game a few years ago, but Wolski did score the winner in a shootout. This could be muuuuch cheaper and let's face it, a pro hockey game and a party afterwards is quite possibly the greatest way to rock out a holiday smile.gif

QUOTE (Hugglebuggles @ Nov 6 2009, 02:18 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Absolutely, I think getting married in Canada would be the safest and easiest way for you to proceed. Although there is nothing technically wrong with you crossing the border into the US as a visitor, marrying your fiance, and then going back home, it may cause you some problems. If you proclaim you are crossing to get married at the border you may get extra questioning and be forced to prove your intent, which includes showing ties to Canada proving you will return and file for the CR-1 and not adjust status in the US. Even then, it is always up to the discretion of the border official weather or not to let you in.

If you have the time, read the personal experience of raphael7546. Under "signature and story" she talks about her experience attempting to cross and marry her fiance. Even though she had every intention of returning home, she was denied entry, missed her wedding, and was treated like a criminal. Of course that is not necessary the same treatment you will receive, but it highlights the dangers with planning to cross and marry, regardless of intent.

My explanation was stated as if you weren't going to go back to Canada and just get married and stay in the States, I apologize for the confusion I caused smile.gif

I'd definitely recommend getting married in Canada as there wouldn't be as much needed as far as evidence goes in such. You could very well spend a few hours in American Immigration/Customs trying to explain that you're going to go back, wouldn't be worth the hassle in my opinion. Good luck!

bowflexMaleCanada2009-11-06 14:21:00
CanadaI'll ask my fellow Canucks!
Hi there smile.gif

My wife and I went with the CR-1 visa, she lived in Ontario and I lived in Michigan. We got married in Windsor and then while the visa was processing I visited her every single weekend, every holiday, and occassionally during the week when my work schedule allowed. I never once had any problem getting over the border, just got called in sometimes for 30 minutes or so to answer a few questions.

As you already have the intention of marrying you shouldn't go for a visit and then get married in the States as this is against the law. Filing for AOS after you've come over the border after getting married on a whim is fine as long as you didn't have the intention of getting married when you crossed. This could bring up a lot of problems later when your interview comes up so I'd highly recommend doing it the correct way.

If you want to visit your husband in the States, you just have to bring plenty of ties to Canada and you shouldn't have a problem crossing. I must also point out that the CR-1 is by far the better visa to go with as you can work immediately after crossing and don't have to deal with the whole AOS process that can be lengthy and very pricey. Good luck!!

What I don't get is when couples have kids in order to "strengthen their marriage." If you're marriage has problems already, kids are not going to suddenly solve it. I doubt anyone would argue that kids make life more complex.

Maybe they think the fear of child support would scare the ####### out of the other person and they won't leave? I know people that are paying an insane amount and probably would've figured out a way to stay with the person to keep it from happening if they could or would've chopped off their schwance before doing something stupid when young LOL.

I am just hoping that they will allow me for a short visit during that time until my certificate processes, and that so I can get to have my first Christmas together, even if on a visit!

Editing: I won't stay for over the 6 months then. I don't want to get in trouble, and then face penalties for staying longer. Thanks!

CanadaTwo different stories, one ruined wedding. (Posting again and with updates)
Everyone's pretty much given you all the information you need so I just wanted to wish you good luck. My wife lived in Ontario and I lived in Michigan so we just made sure that I visited every weekend throughout the process and we got through it. I would definitely keep in mind as everyone has said that you can only visit for up to six months during this process and then you'll have to be sure to return home. Even if one border guard or such states that you can stay longer or that something has been sent to the "Higher-Ups" for a faster approval, don't believe it. I have been filing paperwork for my wife as we've been getting stopped at the border every single time since she's received her visa, 2 1/2 years now, and we've had several people tell us that it will be cleared up soon and such. They can expedite it all the way to the president but as most of us have seen, nothing with the government is ever fast or easy.

In the same light if that guard says feel free to stay over the 6 months, you really need to make sure you don't listen to that. If they can in any way document that you had an overstay you could very well be faced with filing for a waiver and those processing times are usually at the very least 8 months to a year on top of everything else. The rules are clearly stated to only visit for six months and everyone here can summarize the process to the letter for applying for a visa so I'd just go the very safe route. There will be no expeditions for spousal visas so I'd just face reality and prepare for a 8 to 12 month wait. Not saying this to be mean or to make you feel bad but I think we all had to eventually face that fact as well.

Good luck to you and just be very thankful that you live close enough to visit each other quite a lot smile.gif Good luck!!!

Do they not know that if you cheat once everytime someone asks that would end up being the same as not being on a disciplined plan at all? I was shown case law by our lawyer that even stating that if an immigration officer didn't ask what the plans were for crossing, if the intent was to get married and reside in the USA from that moment on it was against the immigration law. Now just visiting and then leaving is of course fine.

I don't understand why people repeatedly say "it is illegal to visit the United States and get married - that is visa fraud". It is repeated over and over again on VJ.

I also don't understand how VJ folklore gets carried on and on. With people sending a crate load of evidence with their I-130 and I-864 etc. - I just don't understand. If you send the correct documents and evidence, that is all they are looking for, why send a bunch of surplus stuff? Now it's no skin off my nose if someone actually WANTS to do that, but when they tell others to do it and it becomes truth - that's weird.

Well it is against immigration law to visit the States and get married when you have the intention of doing so when crossing the border. Luckily the lawyer I had made it crystal clear that if it was found that this happened there would be at least some type of ban levied against that person.

Yes, in theory it could be worked out - but I say shelve that for the 100 year plan. This is a country that cannot even agree on universal health care, cannot agree that everyone should have coverage - trying to work out when a person should have a cholesterol test and when a food should be taxed will only add more issues to an already volatile issue.

I agree that a fairer way to do it might be to tax higher fat/sugary foods. However you will then have people arguing that they are not guilty of 'over' consuming these foods, so why should they pay more?

Say you are someone who only eats at Mcdonald's around once a year - should there be a 50 cent tax on each big mac because the next person is overweight and eats there every day? Why should you have to pay the 50 cents as well? Maybe they could put a little scale in front of the counter laughing.gif

Haha That'd be quite the sight smile.gif

I just hope something can be figured out soon. When my wife went to have a MRI done a few months ago and we got a bill for $7,700.00 for a test that took 30 minutes, I was shocked. Now granted they were just missing some completed form to bill our insurance with, but I still can't believe how much things cost. I wish more people would stop just thinking that because they have the money to pay for coverage that everyone should. It's just such hard times right now, I hope something can be figured out to keep the costs down and the coverage up. Bill Maher says it on his show all the time, We're the only country in the world that makes their biggest profit off of the their own sick.

And I think you are spot on there IR5 - I definately think it will lead people to avoiding the doctor so they don't appear to be using resources. Plus you are then 'tagged' - no one likes to be tagged.

You can't have an all for one and one for all system with a boat load of stipulations.

Also, how would anyone determine 'eat unhealthy contantly'. The truth is you cannot. If you purely use a body weight scale - say that a person is obese and pays a higher rate. Do you then lower the premium they pay with each pound of weight they lose? For the land of the 'free' - it certainly sounds nanny-ish to me.

Plus, then you will get a ####### for tat system. I'm not sure how many injuries there are per year in vehicle accidents in the U.S. - but it's probably pretty large. Therefore if I lived in the U.S. and did not drive - I should pay a lower premium.

I'm sure there would need to be a lot of provisions put in, but the slippery slope argument is brought up with almost any policy change yet there are ways around it. It would require a lot of discussion but I think it could be figured out. Perhaps instead of lesser premiums, higher fat foods could be taxed more or the costs of healthier food could be lowered. I know my wife and I spend approximately $50-100 more a week on groceries just because we only buy those products that are healthier for us.

As for eating unhealthy constantly, that was definitely an overstatement on my part. By measuring one's body fat percentage, cholesterol levels, BMI (in most cases anyway), the doctor could definitely get a summarization of their patient's lifestyle choices. There could be premium ranges for healthy weights or other determining factors on health.

It is very nanny-ish but I feel it's the best way to go for a system that could offer coverage for everyone. This country is so horribly out of shape and unhealthy that the costs will start to grow for everyone.

but I won't call ANY of this healthcare. It's illness care. If a culture has systemic conditions it takes for granted as normal, people in it may not even question how they are getting sick in the first place. And it all costs money, and someone has to pay.

The attitude of don't think a government should pay for its citizens to have care because you're doing just fine thankyouverymuch is an attitude which reflects how ignorant in general we are of how much our materialistic, individualistic, greedy and polluting society creates the very illnesses it won't pay for.

You don't want to be responsible for paying someone else's bill? Well, you (all of us) are responsible systemically for that illness in the first place. Reconcile that. Please.

I actually want universal healthcare for America but I want it to be done fairly. There's no reason that everyone should be paying the exact same premiums and such when the obesity rate in the States is now at 67%. If someone doesn't smoke, drink, or eat unhealthy constantly, their payments should be lower than those who do, that's just being fair. I workout 5-6 days a week, eat very healthy, and refuse to even try a smoke.

I've heard proposals that are in Congress that involve rewarding those people who live in a healthy way with lower costs and such and I'm in full support of that. Everyone should have health care, but everyone should also take responsibility for their part in it.

Please keep this in the Canada thread as I'm always curious to hear that viewpoint since Canada seems to be more liberal in most cases.

I read this article and I seriously have trouble believing sometimes that it's 2009 and these issues are still coming up. Every couple in this article has a point except for the Dutch illegal immigrant, yet we still have people trying to defend "traditional" marriage. I always wonder if these people ever actually studied marriage and realize what it was actually first based on. Land, animals, food, money, not love. Now this all powerful "traditional" marriage is supposed to be so special and deserve to need defending even though 50% of those precious marriages end in divorce. I just can't understand people caring about how other people live their lives *sigh*

DEEETROIT... WAAAAAT

Haha I can't tell you how much of me died when that whole "Deeeeeetrooooit Basketbaaaaall" thing got popular. People would be screaming that at restaurants and everything, made me sad that I had ever lived in Detroit. Luckily I escaped before it became the lovely city it is today hahaha.

Oh and Game 7 tonight baby, I've got my night all planned out LOL. GO PENS!!!

"This may not seem like a big deal but the building "I went to when they lost my wife's case a few years ago smelled like puke and dirty old cheese and had bars on every window."

Dont get off the wrong exit.... Bad , they'll take ur hub cap!

Lol They have new buildings and everything around the place now, I was in awe. I actually saw a construction company putting up a new building. I thought the last new building put up in Detroit was either the Ren Cen or the Train Station hahaha.

They moved the Biometrics and Infopass appointments to a brand spankin new building in Detroit. This may not seem like a big deal but the building I went to when they lost my wife's case a few years ago smelled like puke and dirty old cheese and had bars on every window. This new place has actual barless windows with big artistic renderings of the statue of liberty and quotations from the Constitution written all over it. Everything was extremely clean and it was actually well organized which was also a very pleasant surprise. It actually made us much more at ease to not feel like we were in prison while we were waiting Lol.

Well Boys & Girls.....

its come down to 1 game, 1 night. may the best (wings) team win!

**I just thought I'd add to this thread instead of starting a new one, since it got hijacked already by the Pens-Wings series**

Lol I'm watching tonight and definitely hoping for the Pens to win. I just want to see bandwagon Hossa's face drop to the ground if he finishes second two days in a row smile.gif Everyone keeps saying how he gave up all this money and blah blah blah, but he made $7.5 million this year and is free to sign a long-term deal now, he's no saint hahaha.

ya, fleury is sucking, lol!! he has made soem great saves, but they dont mean much if ya dont save the weak ones. A weak goal can have a pretty demoralizing effect on a team!! It aint over yet!!

I'm loving the local media saying that Malkin should be suspended but then failing to notice that Zetterburg didn't strap his jersey down so he'd be gone as well if they were going completely by the book LOL. I hope Pittsburgh picks it up because so far halfway through the 3rd it seems that Detroit has the games locked up. Go Pens!

It was pretty awesome!
I was really into junior hockey years back(went to a fair share of Toronto St. Michaels Majors, Brampton Battalion, Mississauga IceDogs games).
Not into it as much now, but do catch some games here & there.

Now that OHL is over it's Go Wings Go.

bowflex: "score" any tickets for the finals???

Lol The company actually offered me a sale on tickets that they get but it's not enough. Lower bowl tickets are still about $315 a piece, and me being an Avalanche fan, no way I'd pay to go see a Wings game LOL.

I'm hoping for the Pens to win but they're defense just isn't as good as Detroit's so it's a tossup. I'd like to see Sid hold up the cup with his pre-puberty mustache though for sure Haha.

Pens? Naw. Gotta root Wings this time again...

Fleury...it's funny, whenever I hear/see the name Fleury I think of Theo. Was a HUGE fan of the guy growing up.
Theo jersies(yes 2), cards, pictures, video clips.....yea, big fan.

laughing.gif We must be long lost family.

Theo was our favourite player for YEARS...(him and dougie gilmour) Until, of course..he got addicted to the bottle.

Had a dougie gilmour t shirt from 1993 that I wore to school religiously.

Gilmore was a quality player until he got dirty and Sakic had to whoop the heck outta him Hahaha.
