I didn't have the internet growing up.

I used my mom's websters dictionary to look up the F word though.. I thought it was sooo funny that it was in there. laughing.gif

I remember it was about grade 10 though the internet became more known and my school library had ONE computer that was hooked up to the internet and you had to reserve time on it, and even though you reserved time, you only had a 20 minute limit... that included the time it took for the damn things to dial up.

Lol When I could spell boobs and boobless on the ol' calculators I thought I was as cool as the other side of the pillow hahaha.

Oh funny story about my son... I was looking at the PC he usually uses lastnight and checking the history and he was on dictionary.com looking up the meaning of 'boobs' and 'bums'.

Thank goodness for parental controls, thats the only place where he can look up such things. laughing.gif

Hahaha this would totally have been me if the internet was actually cool back when I was growing up. Right when I was graduating high school in '99 our high school was considered high tech cause we all had email accounts haha.

CanadaWhich consulate will i need to interview at?

I am Canadian, living in New Brunswick - my fiance (petitioner) lives in Maine and will be sending to Vermont?
We are only getting started in this process and this site seems like it will help tremendously! Support is always great and since we are all in this together, everyone understands.

I have read that the Consulate in Halifax, does not process, k1 visa applications and they need to go to Montreal; Is this correct?

Many Thanks!

Yep you'll be dealing with the wonderful Montreal Consulate lol, good luck!

Canada10 months to citizenship. I am going to do it.
My wife and I will be filing for her citizenship process as soon as possible (just a few months :) ). I used to feel very strongly about this but the more I've thought about it the more I realize that it should strictly be the person/couple's business on what route they'll take. While I'd never agree with someone applying for citizenship if it's just to get out of further debt with USCIS in the future, if the person is living and contributing the right way and went through this horrible immigration process already, I say to each their own :)

Good luck to all!

Sure is funny that when we're in school we think of teachers as all-knowing and not real people. Once a good friend of mine got a job teaching I realized that teachers can be huuuuuge dumbheads hahaha.

CanadaKraft dinner is our national food!

Did you learn all this in elementary school? I lived in Minnesota until 5th grade, and then moved to Florida. I know a lot about Cuba and Mexico lmao.

Haha When learning the states and capitals in 4th and fifth grade we also had to learn the provinces and their capitals. We didn't have to learn much about the history and everything though til late middle school and then high school. Funny thing I guess, we barely learned anything about Mexico though and Cuba was only brought up when discussing communism and Kennedy haha.
bowflexMaleCanada2010-01-15 10:25:00
CanadaKraft dinner is our national food!

I'm not sure what they teach kids today about Canada. I'm sure I'll find out as my girls are in elementary school now.

But, when I was a kid growing up in Minnesota (a border state mind you!), I learned nadda, zip, zero about Canada. I couldn't tell you the names of the Provinces, or any of your Prime Ministers. All I knew was that the Tundra is really cold and trees don't grow there. I think I learned that ya'll have eskimos, igloos, and speak French up there. :)

When I met Sean, I asked him really smart questions like, "You mean your whole family has always lived in Canada?" It just amazed me that generations of people lived in Canada. My oldest sister asked the same question, so I guess it amazed her too.

To be honest, I took a course in World Geography in middle school (I used to be able to find anything on the map geography-wise), and a World History course in High School, but beyond that it was all U.S. History, U.S. Government, etc. even in college.

I fail!

Lol That's really surprising, growing up in Michigan I learned almost as much about the history of Canada as I did about the history of America. We were required to learn all about their political system, stuff about the provinces, and pretty much anything we'd need to know about America we had to know about Canada. The only thing I found odd was my teacher's intense need to explain that the White House wasn't actually burned down by Canada hahaha

Canada(please help) american citizen marrying a canadian (question)

thanks bowflex,

forwards proof of ties to Canada (she lives with her parents, doesnt work,) but she is very active in the community there. would she need to bring copies of the lease agreement of her parents or what other ways can one show ties to the country if they arent responsible for rent payment or if they are jobless? can she show documentation of doing volunteer work?

also when she visits while the petition is being processed is it ok to let the customs agent know she is visiting her "fiance" or "spouse" or would she need to say she's visiting "relatives" or "friends"

sorry for all the questions guys but you guys are really helping me understand the process.

That documentation certainly wouldn't hurt at all. If she's paying rent to her parents or anything that'd also be a good letter to include in her evidence.

As for what to tell the border agent, just make sure that she NEVER lies. Lying to them can cause a ban and cause some huge problems in the future. You don't have to give an abundance of information but just make sure that whatever they ask is answered truthfully. My wife and I went through the CR-1 process and I had no problems ever telling them that I was going to visit my wife.

Canada(please help) american citizen marrying a canadian (question)

although i realize that its a tidy sometimes long process i understand that during the process she wont be able to live with me but i wanted to make sure that she would still be able to visit me while the pettions are processed and are there limitations on these visits?

basically what im trying to say is that i want to be able to see and be with her as much as possible while this process takes place

I actually visited my wife every single weekend throughout the entire process plus holidays and surprise visits. You just need to make sure that there are plenty of ties to Canada, including lease agreements for an apartment, paystubs, etc...It will always be up to the border guard whether or not to let someone in but if enough evidence is present there shouldn't be a problem, good luck!

CanadaIs this too much to ask?
My older brother actually goes through quite a few situations like this with my mom so I can also let you know how bad it can get if it keeps going. My bro's wife's parents divorced and now both re-married so the family on her side has double sets of everything which of course require a whole lot of time. Every single Christmas and Easter, because her family is religious, her side has dibbs on their time because my bro's wife doesn't think that my folks are as important as hers. This has been going on for quite a few years now and I often catch my mom crying in another room while the parties are going on.

I'd do your very best to get your SO on this and include everyone as a heck of a lot of resentment and hurt feelings are in the future if it keeps going. I wish you the best of luck, what a horrible situation!

CanadaIs this too much to ask?
I honestly can't think of anything else in this situation that could be more rude. As you're marrying into the family don't they realize your entire family will now become part of their family? Luckily my family and my wife's get along incredibly well but if for some reason they didn't and I was in your position, I'd actually probably not attend at all.

I'm not even particularly religious at all but isn't part of Christmas supposed to be about spreading cheer and being together with family? What a horrible precedent to set on a new family, I'm very sorry to hear that sad.gif

CanadaNeed Help Deciding on Visa Type
My wife came to the States from Canada on the CR-1 Visa and I'd HIIIIGHLY recommend going that route. After reading people's posts about having to get documentation together for their AOS and waiting to work it seems that puts even more pressure on the relationship. My wife came over on a CR-1 and the next day she was applying for a SSN card, driver's license, and started shooting out applications for jobs. That really helped her feel that she was "in the mix" in the States and we didn't have to spend any additional money on all the other steps that would be required. Whichever you choose good luck!

LOL I seriously laughed at the poor driving test kid, that really had to suck haha.

I got a call from insurance today and they sent another inspector out and BOOYEAH, my car is considered a total loss smile.gif I didn't get the exact number yet but the damage was estimated at $18,500. The frame was cracked in three different places, the axle was cracked in the back and got dangerous close to puncturing the gas tank, and the engine was actually all jacked up from hitting the guy in front of me after he blew me up from the back. Poor guy's insurance is going to sky-rocket but in the next few weeks I get another new car smile.gif I guess I can look at it as I'm getting a few more weeks of the awesome new car smell hehe smile.gif

Thanks everyone for your concern, I'm seriously convinced if I didn't workout and stretch so hard everyday that I'd be much worse off. Luckily my neck is already back to normal and I've been able to workout every night since so I'm keeping my fingers crossed kicking.gif

Oh sweet peter! I am so glad you are ok! That is crazy, was the guy who hit you ticketed or charged with anything?

$12,000 - my goodness!

Lol He just got a ticket as Michigan issues them on a mandatory basis when you hit someone from behind. No matter if you slid into them on ice or anything, they just say it's a 100% fault ticket as there should've been more room between you and the car. He got out, little old Chinese guy, said sorry twice, then quickly went behind his car and hid from us. I hit the car in front of me and that shot him into the car ahead of him, which just happened to be a brand new Mercedes. The woman in that car was ready to go crazy all over the lil Chinese guy if he did or said anything haha.

CanadaLol Proof that Karma does Indeed Exist
I made a previous post about going back and forth when shopping for a new car to lease and that I really wanted to go domestic versus foreign. Well in the end I ended up going with a new Toyota Camry as the price was right and I got a lot of car with the money as opposed to most domestic dealerships having horrible prices and even less options with their cars.

Well on Tuesday I'm on my way home from work, and luckily I only live about 15 minutes away (so nice let me tell ya not having to commute too far smile.gif ). Well I'm stopped at a red light with maybe 20 cars in front of me, and then all of a sudden I just can hear the back part of my car buckling in like a squashed pop can, then a huge bang, then my entire body shoots forward towards the windshield. Luckily I had my seatbelt on but just as I'm at the farthest forward point, boom again, I slam into the car that was 25 feet in front of me and go shooting backwards LOL. The guy behind me was either texting or reading a newspaper, not sure which as when he got out he had a cell phone already in hand with the newspaper falling off his lap. He never looked up and saw that traffic was stopped and went about 40 mph into the back of me, according to the police report.

Just got a nice call today from the dealership and although the car hasn't been inspected yet, his body shop guys estimated the damage to my car at about $12,000. Luckily I'm fine and everything but just showed me maybe I should've taken an extra day or two to find a domestic car haha. I had the car all of three weeks and racked up a total of 498 miles before it was destroyed LOL.

That was most definitely the longest collection of text I've ever read about the sex industry without scrolling around looking for an areola or two LOL. Very insightful, I'm impressed as well smile.gif

As for the venomous response to it, sounds like someone could be experiencing a little insecurity. I suggest getting some wine, turn on the ol' Skinemax channel, and try to get the stick that's wedged about 18 feet out of your bum smile.gif

CanadaNeed some advice...PLEASE!!!!
I'd just add that even if you don't have any problems at the border trying to do what you're doing, keep in mind this could all be reviewed at an interview and you could have a huge problem if any of this is documented. Many of us have had problems from the Consulate for reasons that weren't even valid, but if you're trying to tell your interviewer that you didn't plan on staying that long but had 2 weeks in Canada over a year period you could be staring at a lifetime ban or a waiver of some kind. I would only suggest you tell the 100% truth at the border and go about this the right, legal way. Good luck!

QUOTE (Carlawarla @ Sep 9 2009, 01:55 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
My reasoning was not to defend their behaviour, but to minimize the inflammatory generalized comments. We all have opinions, and often those opinions change when the person who commits a sexual offence is a relative or someone who we know. I just wanted to comment since yes, I worked with sexual offenders for many years, and I also liked many of them. While I don't personally agree with a registry, it does allow for people to know where people who have been convicted of sexual crimes live, and that in itself could mean that some people feel safer knowing. People should be more diligent on making sure that people who aren't on the list are safe to be around perhaps?

I thought I'd throw my comments in secondly, as I find it rather interestingly how people can be open minded and want to learn more information about "strippers" and yet make generalized statements about some people who they perceive as "boogeymen". Just my opinion.

I won't go into the perception of sex offenders at all as you've got a wealth more experience in dealing with these people than I. I would only say that stripping is a job that some people find objectionable, being a sex offender is a much much different thing. Opinions on each really would be like comparing apples to oranges.

Why is it sick to know 3 sexual offenders? They are people too. It's their behaviour that you don't like, I would hope it's not the person. There is nothing "scary" about having them live near you. I'm sure you run into them everyday. It's not like they have this huge SO tattooed on their forehead. Sex offenders are brothers, fathers, uncles, nephews, sometimes sisters, mothers, and nieces. They are your neighbourhood butcher, baker, delivery driver, landscaper, or dog walker. They are not "others". There is no commonality to any as well. They are black, white, yellow...they are rich, poor, and in-between. They are educated and some poorly educated. They are young and old.

I don't really get your reasoning here. I didn't see anyone trying to say that all sex offenders were one-type of person, only that they wouldn't feel comfortable living by them. I think that's completely logical and normal. Unless the person got one of those stupid charges where they pee'd in public one day and got thrown on the list, I'd never feel comfortable living near a person who was on that list.

I think that's what I meant when I wrote my post and got that answer. Bogartnoir, I'm not some non-street savvy person. I was out on my own at 17 with no vehicle for 5 years. There are certain places you have to avoid all together, because they are just NOT safe. Looking to see who is suspicious or not is not going to stop you from getting killed, unfortunately.

Yep it's awful to say but you're completely right. My older brother is now a Detroit Firefighter, just as my Dad and Grandpa were, but now there are a ton of them getting concealed weapon licenses and actually taking guns with them on runs. My brother said a few months ago they were fighting a fire and there were people trying to steal tools and stuff off the trucks to sell. Insane stuff.

As for where I'd feel safer, my main experiences in the USA are from Detroit and in Canada they were from Windsor so really not much difference there. My wife and I live in a suburb about 35-40 minutes outside of Detroit and it's a very nice area, generally more older folks that already went through their starter homes and now live well (thank you crappy home market for the house I'd never be able to afford otherwise haha). We have no problem walking around at night with our ferrets or anything but I sure as heck would never want her walking anywhere alone at night, no matter where we are.

the same way you can be aware and be prepared in someplace like detroit. watch your ####. don't go out at night in places that you know are unsafe. keep your expensive belongings (ipods) hidden when youre on public transportation. don't court problems with people. know where you are and where you're going. look around. see people looking suspicious? walk away. stay where there are lots of people and places to be. carry a whistle or mace or an airhorn with you.

Lol Unless you're going to one of the casinos or pro sport venues in Detroit there's really no skill to staying safe except for NOT going to Detroit. I grew up there and luckily moved out before it went completely downhill but unless you're around a tourist attraction you're going to be robbed. Heck people have been going into the thousands of abandoned building and removing all the copper from the wiring systems so they can sell it to buy drugs, what a garbage pile lol

QUOTE (trailmix @ Sep 25 2009, 11:26 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
It's funny you mention 'individualistic' - as the article also does. Is that a nice way of saying self absorbed? selfish? (I am not saying all American youth are selfish by the way, I just think it's kind of an inaccurate word which is used all the time to describe some American's views on - stuff).

Actually on a lot of levels I do think most Americans are rather self-absorbed on a lot of things. I've had discussions even with my own family and friends about healthcare and it's amazing what I keep hearing, usually along the lines of "in this country it's you get what you pay for" and things like that. American culture is based on if you work hard you're going to get what you deserve and all that kinda stuff, but obviously that's not always the case.

I remember going to a small party at a friend's house while our visa case was pending, and due to the various parts of the case, my wife was not allowed to visit the US at all, I just had to see her in Canada. While we were playing darts my friend of 5 or 6 years got to talking with me about her and the waiting and everything, and he actually said told me that he'd never allow himself to get into a situation like I was in. I asked him what would he do if someone he loved either had to leave the country for a while or was from another country, and I was told that he never would need to look anywhere else because American women were the best and blah blah blah. This is coming from a guy that never left the State of Michigan until he was 17 haha.

That's one of the reasons we decided to have our wedding in the US instead of Canada.... literally none of my husband's friends have a passport, nor any of his family members.... and all of mine do, so it made more sense to have it here.

Lol I got lucky that when we were married in January of 2006, passports for US Citizens going to Canada weren't required. While everyone was at the wedding I asked and only a few aunts and uncles even had a passport and that was only because they had taken cruises or vacations just recently smile.gif

bowflexMaleCanada2009-09-25 10:36:00
CanadaCanadian youth more adventurous than American youth
I actually agree with this too. From the time we're born Americans, for the most part, are told that the American dream is getting married, having kids, and buying that big house with the white picket fence. It was only in my last year of school (I graduated h.s. back in 1999) that the recycling programs even hit public schools and public buildings. Americans are definitely far more individualistic in everything we do than Canadians (*cough* healthcare *cough*).

Heck even living less than 40 minutes from the US-Canada border, I'm the only one of the people in my group of friends that even has a passport. It's weird but vacations or trips to most Americans is just a way to see more of our own country rather than going away and broadening horizons, at least for the most part.

As far as the public transportation, most American cities just weren't built with it in mind. Detroit have 'The Peoplemover' that goes to probably four places downtown and takes hours to get to anyway Lol.
