US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionMedical Exam 1 month prior to interview?

"The medical examination must be done at least two weeks prior to your visa interview appointment date."

In all honesty, I'm not sure WHEN that can be.  The wording here confuses me...even after reading it a hundred times.

If we have already recieved our NVC letter, our p3 and p4 from the embassy, AND have already scheduled the appointment, which is August 19th......Can the medical exam be done 1 month prior to the interview?  Can my fiancee go do the medical exam on July 9th?

People have said yes.  People have said no.

We called the hospital and they didn't know.  The embassy is worthless in responding.

I know this is a stupid question....so.....

THANKS IN ADVANCE!!

CanadaMontreal interview
Hi everyone, this is my first time posting. But, like you, I am frustrated with the waiting game. Chris and I have been waiting, as you can see by the update, for our interview to be scheduled. I have been calling the DOS, twice a week, but no interview has been set yet. I had a bit of hope recently when Amy had success. After all, we submitted only one week apart. But... nothing. Sigh.

Montreal received our packet-3 on Sept 23rd, so... obviously we were hoping to make it before the end of the year. Now we are assuming it will be March, or worse. Ugh. Patience, I hear, is recommended. Ha.

Anyways, now that I figured out how to log in and post, I'll be sure to keep you updated on any changes from our end. Chris and I read the forum posts all the time, so I figured I may as well get in the game and post along with everyone else waiting.

Best of luck, fingers crossed, and to anyone who thought the DOS might be closed today - they're open and taking calls!

CanadaDS-160 online form
Hi all,

For anyone completing the DS-160 online, what did you choose to do for including a reference person from the US? About half way through the form, there is the question of including a person who resides in the US with his/her contact information and organization. Did you just include your fiance(e) or did you include a different person (perhaps in-law or work related) you know in the US? If you included your fiance(e), for the "organization" line did you include his/her place of work, or just type in "fiance" as a response?

My first reaction was to just type in my fiance, but then I wondered if maybe it's good to include someone else as a reference, since they say "someone who can identify you," and already ask earlier about the fiance, I believe.

Any thoughts? Experiences with this?

Also, the photo that is included in the DS-160 upload, is this the photo that will be used for the actual Visa, or is this just for their department file? Just wondering how permanent this picture is, and if I want to get a better one taken. Ha. innocent.gif

Thanks for any feedback!

CanadaMontreal Interview: small purses?
In the Interview Letter, there is mention to not bring "backpacks, luggage, or large purses." No problem. Has anyone gone in with a small purse? Was that acceptable? I'm just wondering, between carrying the evidence and printed documents in hand, it'd be nice to have a small purse to stash the wallet, car keys, hotel keys, passports, etc.

Anyone here taken in a small purse and been asked to leave it outside? Or has a small purse been acceptable in your experience? Or did you just waddle in with stuffed pockets and dump it all out for the security scanner? wink.gif

Thanks!

Canadaworking in Canada after the move to US
Actually, my only question is for others to share their experiences of working casually in Canada when living in the US, and if there were any quirks they experienced one may not necessarily consider.

In particular, I am mostly interested in hearing about freelance or contract work in Canada, once in the US, as that's what I do. I know there are some bigger things to plan for when you're actually working 40 hours a week, so that's why I am more geared to hear about any casual or freelancers out there, if any.

Taxes are easy, in my opinion, so I am not so concerned about that. Then again, I have been doing my self-employment taxes with US and Canadian taxes forever, so I am used to those ins and outs.

It's more... trying to foresee the unforeseen I guess. Ha. Which is not always so easy.

Generally, I do most of my work from home, so it's not a matter of considering the physical border crossing part of taxation. But, occassionally, I do have a short term contract in Canada, so I was just thinking ahead for that. I imagine I'll not have as much Canadian source income in the future, but I'd like to have an idea of what to plan for if I do take on something. So, all hypotheticals for now, and thus I'm happy to hear about others' expeirences.

Anyways, I appreciate the feedback thus far and I look forward to anything else others can add.

Thanks!

Canadaworking in Canada after the move to US
Hi all,

I was just curious if any of you who either moved to a border city, or telecommute to work currently, continued to work in Canada or for a Canadian employer after your move? If so, was there anything special you had to plan for?

I'm basically a border city girl now and will be moving to the other side of the border, and I know I have opportunities to continue some contract work after my move. I just wonder what I need to prepare for, if anything.

I did call Service Canada to ask if my SIN remains active, and of course it does. They said I could continue to work in Canada after becoming a legal permanent resident of the US. But, perhaps some of you have experienced this in reality, and can share something from the viewpoint of the other side of the border?

Also, I am assuming - feel free to clarify - that even though I may be entitled to work in Canada after my move, I likely am not able to earn Canadian wages while waiting for my US EAD, correct? I figure that it's likely best to just not earn any income from anywhere while waiting on that and my adjustment.

I am aware of obvious things like travel and advanced parole, and the taxation side of things. But if anyone has anything to add about a personal experience with working or freelancing in Canada after your move, I'd love to hear your responses.

Thanks!

CanadaCanadian tuition/student loans after becoming PR in US?
Hi all, I have a question about education in Canada after becoming a US resident.

First, here's my scenario: I am moving on the K1 visa, but will not only have Canadian student loan interest to claim for taxes for many years into the future, but also I will continue to pay Canadian tuition to my university as a distance studies student (for many years to come).

So, here are my questions for anyone who has this experience:

1) Is it possible to claim Canadian student loan interest on US taxes, or must I continue to file a Canadian tax return for every year I have this credit/deduction?

2) Is it possible to claim my Canadian tuition on US taxes, or must I continue to file a Canadian tax return for every year I continue to pay Canadian tuition?

I've read up on US tuition credits, etc, but want to make sure what any obligations are to filing Canadian taxes, rather than assuming. If I can get through, I might also call CRA to ask this question.

Any experiences with either of these scenarios is appreciated. Thank you.

CanadaCanadian tuition/student loans after becoming PR in US?
Just in case this may help someone else as well...

I also asked my question earlier on the Serbinski tax forums and was told the same thing about not claiming education on Canadian taxes after my move - as I won't be filing Canadian taxes, as I won't have any residential ties.

However, today it was suggested I look into two things: 1) The IRS Tax Benefits Guide for Higher Education, and 2) whether or not my university is an "Eligible Education Institution" in the eyes of the IRS/FSA.

Interestingly, while it may not always be the case I suppose, my school currently is recognized by the IRS and has the appropriate IRS tax paperwork, FSA (federal student aid) code, etc. My institution said they have other American students requiring this paperwork, so in fact they were well aware of my situation and tax prep needs.

It appears my tuition payments will be considered for US credits, according to the definitions and qualifications met in the IRS Tax Benefits Guide for Higher Education, and with the agreements between my school and the FSA. So, it was definitely worth checking around.

Zyggy, thank you for your input. I am sure my situation is likely a unique one with many schools likely not being recognized by FSA or the IRS. Thankfully, it seems I may be able to claim a few things but I will seek professional assistance, to be sure, when the time comes down the road.

By the way, if anyone needs it, the IRS Tax Benefits Guide for Higher Education is Publication 970 and is available at www.irs.gov.

Canadatraveling info
Congrats on your interview date.

The only part I can answer for you is regarding your personal belongings crossing the border. For that, make sure you pack neatly and have things organized in like manner. Example - books are packed with books; clothes packed with clothes; etc. Then, make a list of how many boxes and what thy contain; example - 4 boxes of books, 5 boxes of clothes, 3 boxes kitchen, etc. You want to make it as easy as possible for the border folks to see what you have and reference your paperwork.

If there are anyquestionable items you plan on taking (food, pet supplies, etc) check the Buffalo CBP (customs and border patrol) website via google to see what they limit or deny.

As for how long at the border... for a normal border crossing, depending on traffic, it can take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour or more. But for crossing with a visa and personal belongings... I would be very sure you give yourself several hours in order to comfortably make it to your flight.

Best of luck and congrats!

Ooops. I forgot to share links. I think they are www.quicktaxweb.ca for the Canadian version and then http://intuit.turbotax.com for the US version. Nice part is, you can do your taxes online and see how they look (and how comfortable you are doing them yourself) without paying upfront. You only pay when you choose to complete and file the taxes.

Best of luck!

CanadaAny good reference for a specialist able to do taxes ?
I don't have any recommendations for professionals, but I will say that Turbo Tax is a lifesaver!

You would do two tax returns. First, your Canadian (federal and provincial) and then you do your US return (federal and state), and Turbo Tax is super easy to use. I've been using it for my fiance's US taxes (I do his for him) and for mine in Canada, and will continue to use the program after the move - even in that critical "exit return" year.

Regardless of what you use or who you hire, you will need to file a separate Canadian and a US return. Best to do Canadian first so as to know what to include/exclude for the US taxes.

Unfortunately, the carry-over for your 2007 tuition credits will only be applied to your Canadian tax return this year, since they were acquired in Canada. Hopefully you can make the best of that deduction for your Canadian/Quebec return, so you have a nice refund.

Best of luck. Taxes are soooo fun. good.gif

CanadaThe best route to follow for a Canadian marrying an American
Welcome Canuckcowgirl,

We were very happy with the K-1 route. I'm the Canadian and my US fiancee visited me frequently, so we didn't have long times apart during the process. It was straight-forward and all things being said, took a total of about 10 months from the date we submitted our I-129F petition to the day I received my Visa to cross the border.

Just to give you an idea of what it was like for us, we submitted the I-129F in March last year. My visa interview was early January this year, and I'm moving next week.

We found it very easy to navigate through the process, first doing the I-129F, then having packet 2 and 3 arrive, and getting things ready for the interview.

If your fiancee is able to visit you, or you him (or both!), during the process it really is a smooth way to go. We would do it the same way if we had to go back in time. We also liked how with the time in between it was afforable to space out the associated costs.

Best of luck deciding on your route. Read as much as you can on the Guides and instructions, and when in doubt ask questions.

Good luck!

CanadaMy Medical Experience
Bauser, I noticed they gave you an Xray. Did they say anything about the new TB skin test?

I had my medical in September, so I had the Xray as well. No skin test.

I'm just curious if anyone going for their medical in recent weeks has had the TB skin test instead of the Xray, since USCIS is now switching over the requirements for the AOS phase. But it seems Canadians are continuing to have the Xray, so if that's what they want, so be it. I'm sure they're still sorting out what and how they are changing things.

Stacey, if your husband is a member of the Indi firefighters union, I would suggest contacting one of the member services reps. Sometimes when the benefits are dealt with on the City side of things, they need a little encouragement from the union/association side of things. If he pays dues, there should be someone there with the know-how of what needs to happen to get things moving for you guys.

I agree. To me it sounds like the TB booster you've mentioned is actually the Td booster (tetnus), which should be provincially covered.

I just know months ago I kept on saying TB when I meant Td, so it's possible I'm not the only one. innocent.gif

Our interview was in Montreal, so it may be different... but I did have to supply an updated letter saying my fiance (the petitioner) was still free and legal to marry me. But they did not ask for a copy of his birth certificate, just mine (the beneficiary).

Hope that helps some.

CanadaCome Again?
Pissed! Ha. Yes, it also means drunk. That's the best response ever. I didn't realize that it does not translate as such in the US.

Now, shoes. Oh boy. Personally, I will either say runners or sneakers. But my Michigan fiance and everyone he knows calls them "tennis shoes." My automatic response was... you don't play tennis. And if you did? Those would not be the shoes you'd be wearing. So, I had a good laugh with that one. My favourite, though, is that we keep calling our shoes in line with our respective cultures. So, in one conversation it'll go something like....

Him: "Babe, you know where my tennis shoes are?"
Me: "Beside my sneakers in the closet."

Old habits and all. (Plus a little Canadian stubborness.) whistling.gif

Great list topic!

CanadaGrocery Items Unavailable in the US
Seriously?!

I have been doing some checking into which of my beloved foods contain HFCS, so I can pack up some good old Canadian products prior to crossing the border.

I was not surprised about ketchup and mayo and Miracle Whip and Coke. Okay, a little bit. But. Fine. Pain the butt, but fine.

What I am surprised at... cereal. Cereal?!

Last night I saw one of those ridiculous commercials from the Corn Growers Association, yet again saying how HFCS is "fine in moderation." Well, how moderate is my consumption when they even put it in Special K and Rice Krispies and Almond Crisp and... and... what?!

I know it will be impossible to avoid HFCS altogether, especially since I can only take so much Canadian groceries with me every visit, but seriously. It's depressing.

As if I wasn't bad enough, stocking up on salad dressings and condiments here, now I'm also going to finish off our U-Haul with a crate of cereal. Sheesh.

CanadaK-1 people waiting for interviews at Montreal
Our interview was about four months after the packet 3 was submitted.

Hmmm. Well, they took my appointment letter from me at the interview, so I can't refer back to it. But, I believe it said something like "please bring your passport, photos, the original and one copy of your documents, appointment letter and $131 cash." Something like that. It didn't specify what those "documents" were, so I just took basically everything from the Packet 3, including the evidence of relationship, affidavit of support, police certificate, etc. In the end, I think they just looked at the employment letter for Chris and took my police certificate. But as I mentioned earlier, they also wanted a photocopy of my passport ID page.

For the DS-160, that came into effect after our date too, but since my interview letter said on the bottom "please be advised the DS-160 is replacing the DS-156" (rough wording), I did the DS-160 online anyways, just to be sure. They didn't ask for it at my interview, but I think Jen said they asked for hers? Either way, it didn't slow things down for us. So, if your letter asks that you do that form online, I'd say go for it.

Best of luck on your upcoming interview!

Yes, I was given my original birth certificate back right then and there after they checked it against the copy. So no worries!

Going from memory, I think the only originals they kept were the passport (which gets sent back to you with the visa), the two pictures, the medical report, and the police certificate (so make sure to make a copy for yourself).

And... of course... since I last posted, I have been doing packing and purging and preparing for the move... and after I posted the details of that letter I tossed it in the trash which is long gone done the garbage chute. Of course. Naturally. Cuz I just didn't need it anymore. Ooopsies?

Hopefully what I posted will be helpful on some level. But really, the interview letter you get states exactly what they want, and then you take that stuff to the interview and hand it over to them when they ask for each document.

Sorry I didn't think to keep it for posting, but since I don't have a scanner either I don't know how much good I could have been.

Okay, so now I feel like a tool. I'll just slink away now. wacko.gif

Congrats Jen!!! I'm glad it went well for you. Best of luck with the move, too.

Cheryl and Richard - I wasn't asked for any of them at the interview, but I did take a copy of the past forms (DS230, DS156, etc) just in case. I also took a copy and the original of the DS160 that is the new form (with barcode) to replace the DS156K, but I wasn't asked for it. However, as you can see from Jen's post, she was asked for it, so it's best to take it with you. Heck, I even took a copy of the I-797 Notice of Petition approval, but was not asked for it.

I just checked, and I still have the sheet of paper they handed us after we got our number. This page, when in the consulate, says to put the following documents in order for when they call your name:

-passport(s)
-photos (with name printed on back)
-medical report
-police certificate
-evidence of support (employment letter, I-134, I-864, or most recent taxes)
-return envelope with your address

Then there is a note saying *if you previously sent any of these forms to NVS, they will be in your file.

So while we waited to be called up, we just made sure we had those things ready to hand over. It really was an easy to understand process with no confusion or stress. Plus, they have vending machines (takes Canadian money $1 for chips, $1.25 for pop), a water fountain, and nice bathrooms. So, it's a sterile office that looks like you're at the DMV, but the atmosphere is not stiff by any means. It was a comfortable and relaxing process.

Best of luck.

I agree with shayma's message. Check the site that shayma provided in the post above and check if the visa has been issued. The same thing happened to me and it took about a month to receive the call back for pickup. Apparently the site said the visa was issued and the embassy did not have the folder package put together for pickup. All will be well, it is just a matter of time for them to call you.

Yes thanks guys ... That's what I do daily and tells me "ready" like ready for an interview. So I emailed the embassy and I said why does it say ready for interview when he has gone through the interview and given a date to come pick up his visa but was told "printing issues". They said oh it's an interview to pick up his visa we just don't have a date yet... Time slot.... The latest message from the us embassy was this:

Thank you for your email. We will contact your husband as soon as his visa is ready to be picked up.

Best,

Sanaa IV Unit

So I am just praying that soon they will call him!!! Hey Brooklyn Man when they finally called your wife did they also have her passport for a month because they have my husbands passport and it's been over 2 months. But again thanks guys for all your comments !!!!!
