Love Mari!!

Keepin in touch with my fellow Decemberites...Lena's repeat medical was a success and we are ready for the interview in Kiev. Upon calling yesterday, dates are full for May but there are usually cancellations so I will be calling everyday to try to get her squeezed-in for a late May spot. I wish all of those still patiently waiting for their NOA-2 to hang-in! It'll come soon! Congrats to those who recently received the good news.

Exactly what I'm worried about now is the medical exam...

Lena decided to go last Monday for her medical exam in Kiev, Ukraine and because the doctor questioned something on her chest x-ray, she is now required to take a 6 hour train ride back next Monday for 3 daily sputum tests at 50 USD each test. We pray all will go well and then pursue the interview. Keep her in your thoughts Decemberites and thanks. :(

To be honest, Lena's borscht in the Ukraine was much better than mine. It's a 7 hour time difference and you know that Skyping is definitely not the same as cooking together in real life. But, thank God for Skype! Marriage...within 2-3 weeks of her arrival in Detroit. Can I really plan? I hope it will be in July when my daughter comes home to visit from Maui to be at our wedding. Here's the recipe (from Lena).

Ukrainian Borscht

PREP:

1 whole chicken or meat of your preference
3-4 potatos peeled and cut in small pieces
2 carrots - diced
1-2 small beets - peeled, cut and slivered
1 onion - cut and sliced thin
1 cabbage (small) - cut and slivered thin
parseley 1/4 cup
2 cloves of garlic
2 Tbs tomato paste
1 cup tomato juice
salt
pepper

Cut and boil chicken in a large pot of water - fill pot halfway with water (may substitute with meat)
Decrease heat to medium, cover slightly and simmer for 30 minutes
Add beets - increase heat to medium until beets are nearly cooked through
Add carrots
Add potatos
Saute onions in oil until clear, add tomato paste and tomato juice (mix well)
When potatos are nearly cooked through, add onion, paste and juice to pot
Add 5 cups of water to pot
Add cabbage (maybe 3 cups) - continue with medium heat and slightly covered
mince garlic and add to pot
add salt and pepper to taste
Turn off heat when cabbage is cooked through
Add chicken or meat (cut into small pieces)
Let the pot rest for 15 minutes

It's done and it is truly delicious! Don't forget to add a dollup of sour cream in the center of your bowl of borscht.
Take my word and my son's word for it! Enjoy

Now, about the challenge...we'll see...

Nice of you to keep up with us. My SO walked me through "making borsht" last night via Skype. Her English is intermediate and my cooking skills have much to be desired. The borsht was great. My son had two bowls, me too. This dish is Ukrainian. Makes me miss her more! Hoping for good news soon, for all of us.

Thanks for adding us to the group. We are biding our time and gathering docs for Lena's interview in Ukraine. We wish our fellow December filers God speed! So well worth the wait. Wish I had more patience though. I miss her borscht:-)

I think your plan sounds lovely. A very nice touch! Congratulations!

Sleep is what she'll need. Empty the fridge of all of the processed foods! Stock-up on potatos, fresh vegatables, fruit and black bread! Buy bleach and Tide. Be prepared for Mrs. Clean taking over! Oh, don't forget home shoes (slippers).

PhilippinesShe's doing it again.

I got to tell you, they are adorable. Even when she makes me mad deep in side I feel like smiling.

If you enjoy those antics and laugh at them, then congratulations, that's all that matters.

The O.P. does not appreciate his wife's tantrums, and is crying for help, so his situation is different.

No Offense....let me ask you. Did you hire a lawyer for your K1 process? For them hiring a therapy is like hiring a lawyer for K1 process. Just a waste of time and money. They are having sweet little moments and he is confusing that with problems.

I don't think that makes sense. The type of people who visit Visa Journey for advice are usually those who would not need a lawyer; but others certainly may need one. But those who visit Visa Journey for marriage advice probably DO need therapy.

PhilippinesShe's doing it again.
You both need to learn conflict management ... how to "fight fairly" in a marriage. There are plenty of books and classes on that subject.

PhilippinesDivorced american man now married to filipina

and the exwife still his beneficiary? something good is still going on with them

No, that just means that his ex-wife has had a lot of influence over him, and is still influencing him. She may be using the children as a tool to get that (i.e. "If you die, who will take care of the children?") Or she may be using guilt, especially if he left her. I would urge the OP to gently persuade him to change those things.

That's pretty normal in the U.S.. It is bad manners to text her during dinner, though. The larger problem, it seems, is that you do not have access to money.

The best way to help is to leave it alone, to pull out and not get involved. This is a social problem, and adding yourself to it just complicates it.

PhilippinesHow Long are you Visiting Earth ?
I've seen smoked salmon at a breakfast restaurant here in the U.S., but that's about it.

PhilippinesReport her or Not?

Nope here are some things he did: the roles is somewhat reversed from the OP. Of course though I have tried to caution the girl and her family. Even been looking into how I could bring her here under Au Pair or something.
....

He doesn't sound like a bad guy; just new and naive; apparently jumping into things there too quickly.
Laser1MalePhilippines2012-04-30 16:39:00
PhilippinesReport her or Not?
I'd say report her, primarily because you do have first-hand knowledge about her actions. To make the report effective, be careful to stick with the facts that you know about what she is doing; try to avoid giving your opinions about her.

PhilippinesProblems with Family....need advice

My fiancee will be isolated enough with just leaving her family to be with me.

On the bright side of this, my financee has a sister and family in San Francisco(I am in Michigan) so It looks like I will spend the holiday there so she will be feel welcome...she will be in here hopefully December 22, so the plan is to meet her there with her with her family there and bring her to Michigan after the Holidays to begin our new life together.

Have you thought about moving to San Francisco?

PhilippinesFather would not give up K2

... so perhaps in the alternative consider coming to some sort of deal where the child can return to visit the father for a few months every year or two.

Good idea. Posted Image Offer to have the child spend summers or Christmas with the father... even if it is not legally required.

Laser1MalePhilippines2012-12-07 10:42:00
PhilippinesFather would not give up K2

I don't understand why people think this is even remotely reasonable.

That's your problem if you don't understand, not the O.P.'s, or mine.

The father in this case clearly wants to be a part of his daughter's life and any man or woman that would attempt to sever that relationship is a monster and/or full of spite. The mother needs to decide what is more important to her, the daughter or her kano fiance. The OP has to decide if the suffering of his fiance's family back home would be worth the cost of interfering with the father's parental rights (because I can almost guarantee that the girl's father will not make life easy on the woman's family that remains in the Philippines).
Laser1MalePhilippines2012-12-06 14:10:00
PhilippinesFather would not give up K2
If the father is reasonable, she may be able to negotiate an equivalent amount of time with the child, perhaps a one or two week visit per year.

PhilippinesUSPS Express mail international missing?
You might also want to consider using USPS "Global Express Guaranteed". Fedex ships the package under contract, and the rates are a lower than normal Fedex.

Philippinesmoney problems in paradise...

I don't know many people who would give 10k to their wives families in the US so how do you justify doing it for someone in the philippines?

Correct, especially not for an adult brother's motorcycle accident. That would be totally unreasonable.

Laser1MalePhilippines2012-12-19 14:50:00
Philippinessending money to the family back in the phils
You might want to consider setting a date, a few months from now for when you will lower or cut off those payments. So maybe tell her that, in 3 months, you will lower payments to $100. It can be easier to negotiate that with people when the change is not immediate, allowing time to prepare for it.

PhilippinesThe bar girl...

I just don't see how any marriage can be anything but a long time John after someone has done something like that.

Most any guy who marries such a girl would fear that; that's the elephant in the room.  I guess some react by positioning himself as that master, in a certain sense, with her as a willing trophy, splurging on her to keep other guys at bay.  And that others try to educate her instead, hoping that changes her mindset.

Yes, you can take two laptops in your carry-on luggage, and bring just one back.

PhilippinesWhat's the best way to send a laptop to the Phils?

It is generally best to bring the laptop with you as carry-on luggage when you travel to Phils.  Then you will not have to pay any fees.
