Not sure why these people experience were totally different to David and my interview. We were only asked a couple of really simple questions. How did we meet? and How manay time had David visited the US. PLease see embassy review for additional details.

I think this is because you were probably very well prepared. I think those that get questioned to death don't have much evidence or proof of relationship. Therefore, they have to 'prove' the relationship at the interview. Me and Tony were done in under 5 minutes also. Also, when the fiance/spouse attends too, they are also less likely to ask so many darn questions - usually.

Funny that you guys should mention cornmeal porridge. I've been bugging Tony to make it for me - I've never had it before! He said he would so I bought the cornmeal and some condensed milk. 3 months later, they're still sitting in the cupboard and I still don't know what it tastes like wacko.gif I think I will try this recipe and try to make it myself. I don't know if I've ever had cream of wheat.... Does the porridge taste like oatmeal?

Just a question for you ladies (and gents)...I like to plan ahead and am thinking of what to get my SO for Christmas. I'm a BIG black Friday shopper so I want to get his gift then while prices are good. Anybody want to share what you plan on getting your SO or what you've got them in the past? And what they got you?

I can't go shopping on that day! I can't take the crowds and the traffic! But I need to shop early this year since the baby is due Dec. 16 wink.gif I never know what to get Tony. Last year I got him a very expensive (more than I was planning on!) gold chain. He picked it out, but he sorta had to because he's so darn picky. His first year here I got him some Timberland boots and a few clothes. He got me an iPod for my birthday a year or two ago. I don't know what to get him this year. I gotta say, there's a WHOLE underground, unspoken world that Black people from ALL OVER THE WORLD share. Only WE share it so other races and cultures don't get it. Blacks meet from the US, UK, Africa, Caribbean, and they all have someting in common. The way they have been treated throughout the history of this world. They all have heard horrible tear causing stories from their granparents, and even their own children. The all know whats its like to be a ethnic minority, even when they live in a country or continent where they are the majority. When we don't live in areas where there are many of us we gravitate to one another, giving each other an unspoken look, or head nod just to show, we acknowledge each others Blackness. When we are around each other we embrace our Blackness and our culture much more than we do when we are around others. WE wear our hair differently, we dress differently, we talk about differnet things. We have converstaions and speech patterns we would never share with other races no matter how down we think they are. When we do it fuels debates like the one on here cause others just don't understand.

How is it that you can make a statement like this, but if I said something similar that we did that to acknowledge our brothers & sisters WHITENESS, then I would be labeled a RACIST???

You just don't get it and honestly I don't think you have the ability to GET IT. People of color don't have the ability to hide what would cause them to be treated unfairly because the moment we appear we are prejudged simply based on the color of our skin. If irratates the FU** out of me when gay people try and compare thier struggles or injustices to those of people of color...most of those you mentioned (religion, age, sexual orientation) are all thing that no one has to even know about thus if people are being discriminated it has come from thier wanting to put it out there for folks.... If personal business is kept "personal" how in the hell can a person be treated bad??? Like comparing apples to oranges. Rhonda...what you don't seem to understand (and also other VJ boardies who had problems with our reaction) was that we hope to enlighten your narrowed perspective in hopes that you may learn from those who actually LIVE it and learn from our feelings and or experiences. Honesly, I don't give a rats azz if you GET IT...but only hope that you have some sort of compassion because of the children....BLACK CHILDREN you may be raising and the worst thing a child can come home to is a parent that won't even empathize but instead makes excuses...which is exactly what you did in regards to this situation. You have entered into a much deeper relationship than just you and your Jamaican husband.... If you can't understand that .... I feel sorry for your children. I come from interracial parents so I can speak from experience from both angles... There is nothing worse than to go to a white parent who makes excuses for injustices..(saying this 2x because of the need to make a point) making statements like yours that it isn't always a race issue. No one expects you to understand but at least when people who have experience in the issues try to inlighten you it is pure ignorance to shoot them down.

Don't insult me with YOUR ignorance. Become a true American and stop complaining about every injustice that you think is in your way. YOU are in your own way. YOUR PEOPLE are in your own way. Change that then get back to me.

With a comment such as this "It was and still is MY opinion that everything involving BLACK people gets turned into a "racial" issue - whether it is or not", I hope that you can understand why many people on here have had some reservations about your comment. When you made your inital comment about Jena 6, I understood it as you are tired of it being aired on CNN, which is something that I can totally understand. After watching CNN for awhile anyone can get sick and tired of them reviewing the same topic. Yes, there are some people who pull the race card on every incident involving a black person and white person but if you lived as an African American and have been shiested out of promotional opportunites in the corporate/private sector, stopped by the police 3-4 times in 6 months for driving a certain vehicle, and ousted out of ample educational opportunites, you would indeed see why some people just cannot let the racial issue go.

Well, I personally have been shiested out of promotional opportunities numerous times just because I'm FEMALE in a male dominated work environment. So don't tell me I have to live as an African American to understand prejudice. And don't even get me started on educational opportunities. When I was applying to colleges, Affirmative Action was still going strong and I was denied an academic scholarship when I had better grades and a higher grade point average and higher ACT scores than the BLACK person who did get the scholarship - just because he/she was a MINORITY! So I worked my butt off only to be "shiested" out of an opportunity by someone else just because they were BLACK. Now, you wanna talk about REVERSE discrimination??

We Black mothers, unfortunately do not have that luxury. So, no Rhonda the 'Racial Issues', as you put them will not go away! Part of my reason was that I never wanted to be a "guinee pig" experiment for some white man who wanted a little "jungle fever". I also never wanted to be with someone who didn't understand and have experienced prejudice 1st hand. There are so many other issues to deal with and honestly I really didn't want to have to explain why something "racially motivated" happened. That is one area I have always felt that we needed to be on the same page.

There are many, many other types of Prejudice besides black vs. white. You implying that someone has never experienced prejudice because they are WHITE is just unbelievable. Just think about it, sexual orientation, age, color, sex, race, nationality, religion, etc... the list goes on and on.

Rhonda, THIS IS A RACIAL ISSUE!!! Put it this way, if all the kids involved in this incident had been white, the kids that started the fight would have been suspended...POSSIBLY expelled. But most definitely not charged with ATTEMPTED MURDER!!!!!
You don't know this for a fact.
As a mother of TWO little black boys, I can not seat back and not find indignation in the actions of the Jena DA. Rhonda, do you know what we as black mothers face in America? We have a 1 in 4 chance of our black sons being incarcerated by the age of 18...ONE in FOUR, Rhonda!!!! That's mean I got a 50/50 shot of neither of my sons being locked up, over some foolishness, like what was displayed in Jena.
IF they don't get into trouble in the first place, then you won't have to worry about them being incarcerated. They don't just pluck innocent people off the street and throw them in jail.

Rhonda, I am going to assume that you are not well read on this issue and just chalk it up to pure ignorance on your part. However, I HIGHLY recommend the next time you want to go say something as hurtful and mean as 'people turning everything into a "racial" issue', you do your research first!

Bwoy, it must be so nice to sit back and view everything through your rose colored glasses!

You want to talk about ME being hurtful and mean, and yet look at what you are saying! I simply stated MY opinion. It was not directed at anyone on this board. It's MY opinion and I'm entitled to my opinion. It wasn't directed at YOU. Don't take it so personally. And for the record, I said that what those boys did was wrong. First, I didn't intend to cause such a stir by my comment about the Jena 6. I was just stating my opinion. I did NOT personally attack anyone or anything anyone said - therefore, I do not understand why there was such an uproar. It was and still is MY opinion that everything involving BLACK people gets turned into a "racial" issue - whether it is or not. If you think it's unfair, fine then say it's unfair. But why does it have to be because they're BLACK? Or because the other boy was white? The situation could have easily been reversed. I did NOT say that I think they deserve the punishment they are being given. I said I was sick and tired of it being a "RACIAL" issue.

Let me ask you this, how would you feel if you were the mother of the kid who got beat up? Would you want the bully's to get away with it and get no punishment whatsoever? Those 6 boys were in the wrong no matter how you look at it.

I don't think you EVER heard anyone condone the boys for the fighting...nor say that they shouldn't be punished. It is all about the inequality of punishment in society mainly where it involves black males. Don't say you don't want to open up a can of worms then make a statement like this because that is EXACTLY what you wanted to do! In answer to your question...If my son had gotten beaten up I would first be angry and would want the ones involved punished. If the punishment was for attempted murder for a street fight where my son had a black eye and wasn't hospitalized...was able to attend a school function the same night...had no major injuries such as broken or fractured bones then I would want an assault charge filed but not attempted MURDER for teenage boys when the shoe could have easily been on the other shoe being that my son is black also....now IF I WAS WHITE...I may have the feelings of many whites of white priviledge thus yes I would want them tried for ATTEMPTED MURDER and then I would also see nothing wrong with the 3 nooses hanging from the tree and maybe make jokes that "oh, don't take it so seriously...they were only playing" or see no wrong in the incidents of the black boys being charged for theft of a gun because they restled it from the white boy who was threatening to shoot them. I really hope you look further at situations than the surface as to only see that the boys were wrong and that the protest were about them having no punishment!

All I ORIGINALLY said was that I was sick and tired of hearing about it all over the news. That's it. But you guys just couldn't leave it alone. So, now my opinion is out there. I'm tired of people turning everything into a "racial" issue.

Girl, come from under your rock!!! lol...It is/was on every local and national news/talk station. Even up here in Portland Or. there was a demonstration to show support. Here is one of many news articles that may shed a lilttle light on the topic/event.

Yeah, after I posted this, I realized what it was all about. I just didn't realize they were referring to it as "Jena 6". Actually, I'm tired of hearing about it already. The only channel we get at work is CNN and it's on over and over again.

Thank you for all your wonderful support and words of encouragement. I still feel so empty and lonely. Every time I talk to A...I just want to ball up and cry. I miss seeing his smile...I miss him absentmindedly stroking my legs while we watch a movie...I miss him attempting to "canerow" my hair...I miss standing in front of him with his arm draped around me to pull me closer...while our favorite music is played at Priory Beach. DAMNITTHISSHITISHARD! crying.gif crying.gif crying.gif sad.gif sad.gif

A few things that helped me while I was waiting: I had lots of pics of Tony around the house and in my purse so I could look at them whenever I missed him. I saved a few of his voicemails and I would replay them when I wanted to hear his voice. He gave me one of his shirts and I would sleep in it or with it to feel closer to him. We also talked to each other every day, usually 3 or 4 times a day even if only for a few minutes. You can also try doing things around your house to prepare for his arrival - make some room in the closets or dresser, buy him a toothbrush, razor, shaving cream, etc.. pick up some Jamaican food items for him.....

And of course, come on VJ and vent to all of us!!

DC is full of black today. My co-workers and I wanted to walk down to the protest downtwon but my boss called an emergency meeting. She asked who died when she walked into the conference room blink.gif

Why is everyone wearing black? This is the first I'm hearing of this. I would have thought someone died too wacko.gif

First thing Andre did was buy this piece of junk stereo at a yard sale so he could rig it with all kinds of speakers and blow out our house. Beware...........................

I have a Bose surround sound system at home, and I swear I thought Tony was going to blow out my speakers wacko.gif He's constantly turning it up and I'm constantly turning it back down laughing.gif

I had absolutely horrible lower back pains starting my 4th month and lasted up to birth-day. I just tried a ton of stretching exercises. Now my lower back hurts from other stuff....but I bought this orthopedic/contour pillow thing from Linens and things that goes between the legs (upper thigh area). It has done WONDERS!!!!!! I sleep with it every night...and my back pain is totally gone!!!

I use a regular, small pillow between my knees - been doing that ever since my knee surgeries. I wonder if the one you're talking about it much better? I may have to check it out. Thanks blush.gif

This made me so sad. Andre cooks nearly every night. If I cook more then twice a month, I am complaining.

Consider yourself lucky yes.gif Tony doesn't get home from work most nights until 6 or 7pm. By the time he showers and gets ready to cook, it's getting late. I usually like to eat around 6 or 7 - if he started cooking that late, we wouldn't eat til 9. Not to mention, he's dead tired on most days and doesn't feel like cooking. Needless to say, we go out a lot or get carry-out innocent.gif
