I try to use coupons as often as possible but it has been really hard for me to try to "cut back." I am so used to buying whatever I want -- whenever I want.

I have the same problem  I have no idea how I manage to spend so much money! That's why I'm stuck at this job - I can barely afford myself let alone my hubby too :P

I joined the Dave Ramsey plan so I can really learn how to budget. Needing to get rid of credit cards and pay for everything in cash.

I couldn't do it  I charge EVERYTHING! I can't even remember the last time I had to go inside a gas station to pay CASH for my fuel  I love pay at the pump!

I agree Anna. It's mostly Damien who is "showing off" - his friends and family didn't ask for much. Damien wanted to pay for everything. I think he toned it down our last trip...and he came home with most of his clothes. He was still talk of the town for months because how he so much gained weight and muscle....he works out almost every day...he friends and family were shocked.

I wish it was just showing off in our case! I think the people that get on my nerves the most are his baby's mama and one of his cousins. Last time we went down there we brought about $200 worth of clothes and shoes (probably more like $400 worth but I got everything on great sales at Kohls :P ) for his 2 kids and then spent another $200 in JA on school stuff that they needed. She still bitched that it wasn't good enough, she needs more money, rah, rah, rah :ranting: No thanks or appreciation for what we did do

And then one of Tony's cousins is always sponging off him and anyone else he can. He is perfectly capable of working but he never has a job - well, he had one once but he got fired because he stayed home 4 days in a row instead of going to work to watch the World Cup  He just lives with whichever baby's mama he likes the best at the time!! And he has 4 or 5 to choose from <_< So he's always asking for stuff and money.

I heard this yesterday: I ran into an old friend and she said that a relative of hers had just gotten married to someone that she brougth over from Jamaica and his parents were able to get visitors visas to attend the wedding here???? I cant get any more details so Im wondering.....Did anyone every hear of this before? Can they get visas that quickly, for that purpose?

It's usually very difficult for Jamaican's to get a visitors Visa. It can happen, but it's rare. They have to have proof of assets in Jamaica like land/property, a house, bank account, business, etc... to show that they have "ties" to Jamaica and they're not trying to escape to the U.S. I'm not sure how long it takes, but knowing the Jamaican Embassy, probably a while!

Okay, BIG NEWS tomorrow I fly to JA for our interview on Tuesday.

GOOD LUCK  Have a safe trip! Try to relax - you guys will be fine

I loved Barbados, but it was really expensive! We spent over $5200 in one week :o You can do it a little bit cheaper, but we wanted to stay somewhere nice (Hilton). I'll try to send you some pics.

 Very true. I'm trying to convince Damien to go home this July for the Sumfest but he said he doesn't have enough time or money to shop...HELLO, it was January

 It makes me so mad that everyone expects him to get rich overnight just because he moved to the U.S. EVERYONE wants something when we go back - even people he hardly knows :ranting: People we would run into on the street would want him to buy them a beer or just give them some money! no one wants to just fill out the form....they all want to give blood tests and re-do the physical...well it has to get done right???

i was talking to someone the other day and they said coming off of a k-1 it doesn't need to be done....i am ssoo confused...

Sorry, I can't help you. We didn't have to do this when Tony came here. All I did was make a copy of his vaccinations that he brought from the medical and that was fine. I freaked out because I thought everyone had to get the supplement, but we didn't and we got the green card w/ no problems. B)

Does that form need to be done in order to send it with the packet? I just made a copy of his vaccination record.
I smell a RFE coming my way...

That's all we did too and NO RFE  But, that was 1 1/2 years ago!

Why doesn't he want to go back to JA?? I think most of us have had the opposite problem! They want to go back as often and as soon as possible. I know Tony misses his family and friends. I can't imagine him staying away from them for 4 years :o That's a long time.

But honestly I think the biggest challenge that has come so far is adjusting to being together all the time. We really are different people than we were when we were dating. It isn't that we hid stuff from each other...we just never got to that point in our LDR. Getting used to being around each other all the time and sticking through the hard times...having made the ultimate committment. It is a LOT harder than either of us ever prepared for.

Jamie,

This is so true. Me and Tony go through this constantly. We really didn't know each other as well as we thought we did. It is so much different when you're just on vacation together in Jamaica every couple of months compared to actually living together. And then you go from being 2000 miles apart to being married :o - almost as if it happened overnight! Trust me, you are not alone in this. The word divorce has come up more than once with us, but we keep trying to work things out and stick with our committment. And yes, it's a lot harder than we anticipated  Hang in there girl.

For everyone with their loved ones here, what was the biggest adjustment that they had to make? How were they able to overcome their obstacles? And what was their biggest misconception about America/Americans?

Wow, this is a loaded question  For Tony one of the biggest changes was the weather in Detroit. He was used to 80 degree temperatures every day and he came here in October to mid 50's and then it just got colder from there. Then snow and ice and even colder weather as winter set in.

One of the other big issues was the major lack of public transportation here. Tony felt trapped at home all the time while I was at work. We got him a bicycle but as soon as the weather got cold he couldn't ride it. He was used to being able to walk or take a taxi to anywhere he wanted to go in Jamaica so this was a huge adjustment.

Another obvious problem was that he couldn't work right away. He's not used to sitting around all day OR depending on someone else for money or anything he needed. He was very bored and depressed :( for a few months until he started working somewhat steadily.

Also, I live in a neighborhood that is almost all white people :o so Tony was like the only black person around! This was really strange for him at first. I made a conscious effort to take him to restaurants, malls, bars, etc... where there was a more "mixed" crowd of people. I didn't want him to think he was the only black man in Michigan  There is a huge population of blacks in Detroit, but we live in a suburb outside of Detroit.

One HUGE misconception I think a lot of Jamaican's have is that it's easy to make money in America. Tony was shocked at how bad the economy is here right now - jobs are not easy to come by, a lot of jobs only pay minimum wage, and they have to work a lot harder here (in some cases) to make money. AND how expensive it is to live here vs. Jamaica. The cost of housing, utilities, car insurance, etc.. just blew his mind. We still have issues getting him to understand this.

I hope this answers some of your questions. These are the most major things I can think of off the top of my head. I'm sure there are many others.

Hey Everybody!

I am just popping in to say hi. My mom has been very sick, so I have not had much time to stop by. She has a disorder called trigeminal nueralgia. According to docs - it is THE most painful disease known to man. My mom has been brave over the decade or so she has had this, but now, at 73, it is really hard - she has lost a lot of weight (was already as skinny as most of our husbands  ). Anyway, please keep us in your prayers.

Congrats to Rita and Tashi and everyone with good news. I will log on tonight when everyone is asleep and see if I can catch up a bit.

Henry and I are doing well. He still has not found a job and it is causing some SEVERE frustration, where he wants to go back home for 6 months or so. But we are praying about it and I know God will provide something very soon.

Take care everone. I really miss you all. Mrs. Squitto your avatar gave me a needed laugh.

Hey Elizabeth,
Sorry to hear the bad news about your mom :( I hope she feels better soon. Can she take pain medication at least to help her get through it? I'll be thinking of you and your family.

Hi (F)

Congrats to all the recent newly weds and all the other great news that has been happening  I am so happy to hear (read) of all the wonderful things happening for the ladies in our group. It’s awesome how God works  For the upcoming weddings (Rita and Tashi / Mindy and Roy) I hope you have a fantastic time (L)

I just wanted to check in real quick and let you all know I am still alive

I have been trying to stay up on the reading but really haven’t had the chance to post. Things have been really rough the past couple of weeks and I am thoroughly exhausted and not really in the best of spirits. I hope that things will get sorted out and I can get back to the “normal” swing of things soon.

I will definitely keep in touch with you all and I love hearing about how you all are doing but it will probably be a little bit until I can be back on the board regularly…like old times. Sorry about not being able to do the suss…again I hope to be able to take that back up all in due time. Right now it is just to stressful that I have had to put aside certain things that are not necessarily top priority. I love to post here and I love doing the suss but right now my focus needs to be elsewhere.

I hope you all are enjoying having your men here and for those waiting its just a matter of time and you will be with your guy. Patience truly is a virtue.

Jamie :star:

Jamie,
We miss you girl :luv: I'm so happy to hear from you - we were worried about you  I hope everything is going ok for you. Just take it one step at a time and if you need to talk, you know how to get a hold of me. I check my e-mail every day so get in touch with me if you want. Glad to have you back.

hey guys i am still alive.... just saying hi!

Popcorn,

Good to see you too  Glad you checked in. Hope everything is going good with your family.

Hello Ladies.

Sorry i have been gone for so long! How is everyone doing? Imssed you all so much, and wow it looks so different in here!!!!

Congrats to Tahs and Rita, hope you are enjoying the weekend to the fulliest!!!!

Well just and update Karl and I are getting married on April 22,2006!
We are having the wedding and reception at a local hall, with about 80 or so people ... He is adjusting slowly, this cold weather is a definet shocker to the system !! He too does not get the whole RULEs around here, things are not as laid back as they are or can be in Jamiaca.. I guess it will be absorbed over time!

Well ladies i am going to catch up on the last 36 pages, i will talk to u all soon

Jill,

No, he didn't need a diploma. He's actually working for my cousin's husband who has a roofing company. He does roofing, siding, and gutters. The worst part is that he has to work outside year round and in the winter it is awfully cold to be up on a roof

Jill,

To answer your question, YES Tony took ESL classes. He completed the first class and then started on the 2nd one, but then he started working full time and he was getting home too late to go to class so he stopped going :( We would both like to see him continue taking classes because they really seemed to help him. Hopefully sometime in the near future. He only went to school in Jamaica though 8th grade so his reading/writing skills need a lot of help!!

For those of you whose taste in engagement rings exceeds your finace's savings, what have you done?
1. Allowed them to purchase one with whatever savings they have even if it's not your taste?
2. Loaned them the money to get something more suitable?
3. Purchase it yourself? Were they insulted?
4. Get a nice CZ-since most people will never know anyways?
5. Other?

Tony originally bought me a huge CZ in Jamaica. That's what he proposed to me with. Then after he got to the U.S. we went ring shopping and I bought both of our rings. Mine was about $1000 and his was about $500. I just opened up an account with the jewelry store and had no interest for 1 year so I just made payments on it. It's the ring I've always wanted. No, Tony was not insulted. He wanted me to have the ring I wanted.

[quote name='Jamaica to CT' post='44368' date='Feb 23 2006, 06:32 PM']
Thanks girls for your input on my question about the engagement ring. I have what's been called exquisite taste in jewelry and my ex husband gladly indulged in my habit as a jewelryholic  I don't have a lot of jewelry but what I do have is nice. Therefore like Lee I have 2 engagement rings, an anniversary ring and other "marital" type jewelry sitting in my safe deposit box doing nothing. I will probably do like Mindy and get a nice CZ or just wear a nice band(and QVC does indeed have some nice ones) as I personally would rather put the money to other uses like a really nice honeymoon. A lot of stars now use CZ's on the red carpet instead of their real jewels if they are not borrowed from the big name jewelers. Anywho my next question is a little controversial but I'd like your input.

Say you have a nice collection of jewelry given to you by en ex that is just being stored, you don't have any children or female relatives to pass them down to, your fiancé cannot afford to give you the engagement ring that you want so would you:
a. use your old engagement ring if your fiancé/husband doesn't mind? (another ex- fiance suggested this but I strongly objected to this option; one reason why he's an ex)
b. sell some of the collection to get your ring or go on your honeymoon etc.?
c. forget about it and let your ex's rings continue to collect dust?
d. sell the collection and doing something else charitable with it?
e. other

Michele

Sell those rings and use the money for your new ring or your honeymoon or whatever! No reason to keep them - you'll never wear them again. And if the marriage ended you probably don't want them for sentimental reasons anyways. My ex-boyfriend a LONG time ago bought me two different CZ rings. When we broke up I pawned them and used the money on myself. It made me feel better (we had a really awful break-up). I don't regret it one bit.

[color="#CC33CC"]I absolutely HATE this new VJ set-up - all my posts turn into one giant post that's hard to read. Is there any way around this?

Where is everyone? It is way too dead in here lately :(

Good morning, Rhonda. I've been sitting back a little since I'm not so sure what's going to happen with me and my fiance.

Are you all ready for your trip? I noticed that you had long ago started the official countdown.

Lee

Spirit Airlines (spiritair.com) has the $9 fare special again. The dates are very limited and so is the cities. I got this special back in December when I visited Jamaica. After all those darn taxes and fees, it came to $104. That was still a deal.

I'm not sure how many of you are in my area but it would apply to me again as I would fly out of Fort Lauderdale. I had been thinking about a visit so this just might convince me to go. We'll see. The special goes through Sunday, I believe. It even has Punta Cana for $9 each way out of Fort Lauderdale.

Lee

Yeah, I heard about the $9 special today. Unfortunately, I can never use them since they are only out of certain cities  And they're never out of Detroit! I want to move to Florida one of these days. It's nice and warm and it would be cheaper and quicker to fly to Jamaica or anywhere in the Caribbean. If I were you, I would go for it though. You can't beat that price, even with the taxes

Also, feel free to come on here and chat with us regardless of the situation with your fiance. We don't judge :innocent: Good luck to you with whatever you do decide to do.

March 3-6, just 4 days. It's a short trip because of Damien's job. He doesn't have vacation leave yet. And if he stays longer he won't get paid or come home to no job (he's too money hungry for either). He is in the process of looking for a new job so we're praying something will happen before we leave so we can stay longer. If not, 4 days is better than none. Actually, Damien wanted to wait until July to go home but I felt like he needed to see his family sooner. We also have our July trip - which he started shopping for already

Shemanya,
That's during the time Tony and I will be in Punta Cana! We're going from March 1-7. Have fun and enjoy your stay. Even a short trip is better than nothing. Plus you guys can look forward to returning in July.

Yes, he DID pay the overweight fee for his RELATIVES luggage, just not the extra for OUR/HIS stuff.

Jill,
OK, I don't get it. Why would he pay for the relatives luggage and not his own? That is crazy  He left all his own clothes in Guyana and paid to bring their stuff home? I would be pissed if I were you  Now you guys have to spend your money to buy him all new clothes? Doesn't make any sense to me. And the thing with the computer - yeah, sounds like a set-up to me too. He should have just asked you in the first place if you could give it to his son instead of telling you after the fact.

Hey Jill,

Glad to hear your sweetie's coming home tomorrow. Sorry he had so many problems with the luggage. Usually if you just pay the fee for the over-weight luggage, you can still bring it on the plane. That sucks. He had to leave some of his stuff in Guyana? I think that's what you were saying. Can you guys have it sent here somehow? Or is it cheaper to buy all new clothes? I don't know but it may be worth looking into.

And yes, once someone goes to America, they're automatically "rich" in their minds. Not only that, but in Tony's case he wanted to appear rich (I think) by bringing things for everyone and buying food and drinks for everyone while we were there. Also, wearing all name brand, new clothing, etc.. It's really a pain. In my mind, he's just making it worse, because now they really do think we have money to blow :o Plus, now he's started a trend where everytime we go back to Jamaica, we'll have to bring a bunch of gifts for everyone :(

As for the pineapple, yes you can bring certain fruits into the U.S. We brought a bread-fruit back with us last time. I LOVE it and we can't get it here.
