Safe travels to all our VJ'ers in JA right now.

Everytime we buy something that requires assemby, he doesn't even look at the instructions, he lays out all the pieces, looks at them carefully and then figures out what goes where.

 Tony does this too! I'll be sitting there reading the instructions and I look up and he's already on step #5 and I'm still reading step #1

Hello from rainy Kingston Jamaica!!!

We got it!!!

Good morning everyone :star: TGIF  I'm actually excited it's Friday because I have the whole weekend off for once :P Plus I'm using a vacation day Monday to get a 3 day weekend!!

It's been way too quiet in here lately :( I'm gonna have to start a new topic:

What is your favorite thing about your man? (No X-rated stuff ladies   )It can be something about his looks, personality, behavior, etc... I know we did the most annoying thing, so now lets say something nice ;)

I love Tony's sense of humor :D He always makes me smile. We have so much fun together. I also love how thoughtful he is. He cleans the entire house sometimes before I even get out of bed  Without me even asking him to help! He even does the bathroom which is my least favorite thing to do!!

Your turn!

Edited to say: Yes, I'm bored  Can you tell?!!

Good morning Yardie fam!!!

I just wanted to check in and say hello.

It's nice to see you Squitto :luv: We missed you around here. Good luck with the new job. What kind of photography are you doing?

I just got back from WW down 9.6 pounds. I want my first star next week. Oh boy and those cheesburger and hamburger at MC D's look good and so cheap there will be another time for cheap burgers

Congrats  The fast food is so tempting isn't it? That's my biggest problem - I eat sooo bad. I gotta have my sweets too :innocent: Tony is always getting on me about it because I complain about my figure but then I'm eating brownies and cookies and icecream  I need a 12 step program or something

Thank you everyone for all the career /job advice :luv: I am going to continue to keep looking - in the little bit of free time I do have  The other problem is I really don't know what I want to be when I grow up  :P A lot of jobs sound good in theory, but until you actually do them, who knows? The grass is always greener.........

I wanted you all to know that i finally posted some updated pics of the kids on our yahoo site so you all can check them out.

Oh my gosh, they are just adorable :luv:  Makayla is beautiful and the boys are just too cute!! I can't believe they are almost 2 now. What a perfect little family :star:

Can you afford financially to quit? Can you afford mentally not to quit? Has your marriage and other relationships suffered as a result of your working all those hours? Have you asked if you can cut back your hours or do another job at the same place the doesn't demand so much of your time? Can you pay your bills and meet other obigations without the extra $20,000?
If Tony's not working for long stretches of time due to the weather can he collect unemployment or look for temp work during that time? I know here in CT residential builders and crew sometimes don't work for a couple of months in the dead of winter and most will apply for unemployment.

The loss of vacation time and other perks is tough but sometimes we have to do what we have to do to get peace of mind and peace within the family.

If you're that miserable I would continue on that search. Best wishes in whatever you decide.
****************************************************************************

NO, NO, Yes, Yes, Not sure ;) I don't think I can afford all the bills with that drastic of a pay cut. That's not even counting my overtime which is about another $20,000 /year :o So technically I'd be reducing my income by about $40,000 :crying: The problem with the jobs I find that are hiring is they all want specific experience in a certain field that I don't have. I've spent the last 5 years in Manufacturing and I want to get out of it. But if I change fields I will have to start at entry-level. I've tried applying for other jobs within my company but they make it virtually impossible to switch.

As for Tony, he doesn't go for long stretches without working - it's more like 1 day here, 2 days there, etc. Last week I think he worked Wed, Fri, and Sat - the weather was bad the other days. So he can't collect unemployment. He doesn't have much education so there are not a whole lot of options for him job-wise. So far he's done cement work, landscaping, roofing, siding, and shoveling snow but they are all OUTSIDE and rely on the weather!

I'm back to working a lot of hours but It's not manditory, I have a choice. Unfortunately in your case they have have taken that option away from you, and that would just make me want to find another job all on it's own. Good luck.

Actually since I've been here, overtime has never really been an "option". It's just that some areas and some shifts work more overtime than others. Also, some bosses are more leniant than others about making you come in when your areas are working. And what shift I'm on is not up to me at all  Of course right now, all the shifts are working 7 days a week anyway  I've basically gotten lucky most of the time I've been here and haven't worked that many weekends. I used to work a lot of Sat. but hardly ever Sundays up until a few months ago when they started forcing me to.

Thanks for all the advice and comments, keep em coming

Mexico, Latin & South AmericaYardies, at home and a farrin' (Part 3)
Ok ladies (and Trini) - I need advice :(

I am really, really fed up with my job. I'm tired of working almost every weekend, I'm tired of being on all different crazy shifts (in the last year, I've been on 1st shift, 2nd shift, and 3rd shift) and I don't even like my job or the manufacturing industry :crying: I've been casually looking around for other jobs but the problem is that I can't find anything that pays even close to what I make now (not counting the overtime money!). Tony's job is too unstable to rely on his income. He's doing roofing but works outside so they can't work in bad weather - in Michigan that's often :(

I have been at my job for just over 5 years now and I know I would have to start all over again w/ vacation time and all that. I also have really good benefits for me and Tony (medical, dental, vision, 401K, etc) and lots of paid holidays and decent amount of vacation days. But the biggest problem is simply the huge pay cut I would have to take. We're talking $20,000 a year or so! :o So, do I just stick it out for now and continue working ALL the time - no social life, no time for friends/family etc. Or do I take a huge pay-cut and take another job and get to work "normal" hours (Mon. thru Fri. 8 to 5 or whatever) ??? :help: I am so stressed out over all this. I did not slave away at college for over 4 years to have this job that I can't stand and work every weekend

On a good note........we received notice that we have our AOS interview on December 7, 2006. It seems kinda fast (I am NOT complaining though!!!!.... ) considering that we have not received the EAD yet. Is that normal????

Congrats  Wow, that is fast! That's less than 3 months from the time you filed! Our interview was approx. 8 months from the time we filed  We got the EAD and AP before we even got the letter w/ the date of our interview.

I get fustrated sometimes sending D's daughter's mother money.

OHHHHH.......I totally feel you on this!!!! I know that Duane has to support his kids but I get so annoyed when I feel like we are taking care of the whole entire family.....At least his daughters mother works and tries to take care of half the expenses....she also is very understanding and does not complain about money ever!!!! but......."rassclat" sons mother is another story. She sits around all day doing nothing!!!! I try to be supportive but it is hard to hold my tongue sometimes......

I hear you on this  Tony has 2 kids by the same woman, and she is constantly bugging him for money  Even right after we brought $300 worth of clothes and shoes down there for them AND took them school shopping and spent another $200, she wanted MORE $$$ Go get a job b****! :ranting:
rhondapayterFemaleJamaica2006-10-23 01:12:00
Mexico, Latin & South AmericaYardies, at home and a farrin' (Part 3)

We have been having some major money issues (fights) in our house the last week or so.

I finally got sooooo pissed the other day because I feel like he is selfish and does not understand how bad that I am struggling financially. .........If I knew that he was struggling to pay the bills, I would NEVER ask him to buy me a $80.00 halloween costume or the "most expensive jacket he tried on". I would settle for something more reasonably priced and not ever ask........

Am I the only person who has gone through this????

No, you are not the only one  The first 6 months were the absolute worst as far as money issues go, but they never really go away. It is well-known that the #1 topic married couple fight over is money/ financial issues! And it's even worse with our relationships because our men can't even work when they get here. I think a lot of JA don't understand all the bills we have - Tony got so overwhelmed when I tried to explain to him where all the money goes ($1000 mortgage, car payment, EL bill, gas bill, cable bill, cell phone bill, car insurance, etc.. the list goes on and on) When Tony lived in JA he only paid $100 a month for his apartment and NO utilities :o And of course no car, so no car payment or insurance. It's just very, very difficult for them to grasp the concept of SO much money going to pay bills each month.

The other thing we also struggled with (and still do) is that everything has to be name brand  Nike, Puma, Timberland, Reebok - all his stuff has to be top of the line. I had a REAL problem with this when I was paying for everything and he wants $120 pair of boots!!! They are just so used to having that stuff in JA they don't know any other way. One compromise we came up with was that I told him if he wanted Timberland boots, I would buy them, but they were going to be his X-mas present  I also took him to Old Navy which apparently is kinda popular in JA. Their prices are awesome - jeans on sale for like $20! Other than that, we just looked for stuff to go on sale. I'm not sure if you have a Kohl's by you, but they're constantly having sales and they carry a lot of name brands Tony likes.

It does get better, just hang in there. Now Tony has his own savings account and when he gets his paycheck, he keeps some out for his spending money, gives me some for bills, and saves some ;) This was his idea and he went to the bank and opened it all on his own. I was so proud :D

One more thought, can he possibly work under-the-table until he gets his EAD? There's lots of that type of work around here - construction, roofing, painting, landscaping, etc. - and I'm not saying he did and I'm not saying he didn't  but I wouldn't be opposed to the idea :innocent:

Good morning Rhonda :)

Good morning! You're up early. I haven't been to bed yet :hehe: I'm still at work.

Two last questions. So I filled out that VISA application form for Iffeisha and I have two questions that I am not sure I know how to answer.

One question is "DO YOU INTEND TO WORK IN THE US " YES NO

The example on the VJ website says to answer YES -PENDING EMPLOYMENT AUTHORIZATION- EMPLOYER UNKNOWN

Is that safe or should the answer be NO.

I used the answer the example gave and it was no problem. I said NO for studying abroad because I honestly didn't believe Tony would be doing much schooling. He's taken some ESL classes but that's about it. What does the example say for that one? I would follow it.

I can't STAND the cold weather!!! Craig said he likes it ??? Then he asked yesterday if I had heat here in the house (as he only had boxers and no shirt on???).

Thanks again for all of your support !!!

I hate the cold too  I don't think Tony minds it as much as I do  He works outside almost all year long here! @ Craig wondering if you had heat in the house!!

How are you guys doing? Did you decide anything yet?

Re hand-me-downs:
Look I can't even handle washing my clothes with another person's; my whole life, I have washed my clothes separately from my siblings and my mom. And I wash my clothes separately from Henry's

What?!!! :o Why must everything be washed seperate? I never heard of that before. Except for the Rasta's who won't wash their clothes w/ the woman's underwear

I love passing on clothes. When I was younger I always got my older cousin's hand-me-downs. My younger sister got mine. Our younger cousin got hers, etc.. My girlfriends and I trade clothes we no longer want/ can't fit into  It's a very cheap way to expand your wardrobe.
rhondapayterFemaleJamaica2006-10-17 03:21:00
Mexico, Latin & South AmericaYardies, at home and a farrin' (Part 3)

My family are pricey shoppers so I know they will be giving her some good stuff cause they like to show off like that. So I was talking to my fiance about this a couple weeks ago and told her that they might have done this. Her response was that she does not like hand me downs and not a charity case.

Is it a man's thing that we will accept gifts like this, but women have difficulty doing this? Or am I marrying the exception to the rule here?

I think this just depends on the person and how they were raised. My husband finds it really funny that we pass down used clothes here  I guess they never did that where he was from. He did accept a few things from my dad (used coats, boots, flannel shirts, etc) that he wears to work since he works outside. However, when my grandfather passed away last year, my mom was giving away everything of his and some of this stuff was brand new. She gave a bunch of stuff to me for Tony knowing that he didn't have a lot of warm clothing. Tony was absolutely APPALLED that I would give him a "dead man's clothes" as he put it :o He said in Jamaica when someone dies, they burn all their clothes and shoes  It is absolutely unheard of to pass on these things. Has anyone else heard of this?

So I have to do some shopping to at least allow her to survive the first couple days after we return until she goes shopping for herself.

When Tony came here I bought him a zip-up fleece sweatshirt. It was ok for a few days and then I took him shopping to pick out a winter coat, hat, and gloves. Depending on how cold it is where you are, you might be able to do something like this. Or, could you lend her one of your coats just until you can get her to the store? That way you don't have to worry about buying something she might not like.

I actually had the weekend off for once :D My 10 yr. reunion is coming up next month. I've been debating about whether or not I want to go. I probably will just because I'm curious what everyone looks like and what they're doing w/ their lives. Don't worry, I'm as old as you are

Men do not like to be "disciplined" or to be told what they can and cannot do.

This is so true  I had to learn this the hard way - Tony has told me more than once that I am NOT his mother so quit babying, mothering, telling him what to do...... It makes him feel like a little kid.

Hello!

So...I have a question for all of you. Does your husband go out to night clubs without you? Are you okay with that?

Neither one of us goes out to night clubs without the other. Tony goes up to the local bar once in a while to play pool when he doesn't feel like sitting home alone when I'm at work. I don't really mind him doing this, I'm just jealous that he gets to go out while I'm stuck at work  But he's working too, just not as many hours as me. So, NO, I don't expect him to sit home all the time. But I would not be comfortable with him going to clubs without me.

SO, my question to you all.............should "I" be upset that he has a girls number because she's a co-worker??? Should "I" call her and ask to what extent their relationship is?? Should "I" be pissed? Do I just let it go?? Does Craig REALLY "need" to make friends with a woman and someone that "I" don't know??? I have a TON of guy friends, but....he's met EVERY one of them and that was within the 1st week of him being here !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He told me that someone at work (a female) was going to put him on HER family plan and I was like, nooooooooo YOU go and GET your OWN phone !!!!!

To answer your questions: Yes you should be upset. No, you should not call her. Yes you should be pissed. No do not just let it go. No, Craig should not have female friends that he hides from you.

And that comment he made about some woman adding him to her family cell phone plan!! :o I think I would have just ordered him out of my house at that point in the conversation!!! You're right, he just DOESN'T GET IT

[I believe that you already know what's going on with your man....we women always do, but for one reason or another we always want to second-guess ourselves or come up with a variety of excuses to try and explain away this obviously deceitful and wrong behavior.

This is so true! A woman's intuition is her best defense. If I would have just listened to my own intuition about 10 yrs. ago I would have saved 2 wasted years dating an *sshole that was cheating on me :o So DO NOT make excues for him. There is really no reasonable explanation for his behavior or why he has some girls number in his pocket.

I know some have joked.....Miss Elizabeth and Rhonda.....  :P :P

BUT...truthfully............. The hotel life is not realistic and does not give you a sense of how things will be when they arrive. It would be like moving in with a complete stranger.............Who can do that???? I knew about his personal hegiene, his housekeeping abilities, his cooking skills, and just about everything including the way he squeezes the toothpaste tube :D ............I was also able to see him in his environment around his friends, his family....how he treated everyone..........I know his barber, his hair braider, his favorite taxi driver, his favorite fabric softener, what he expects from me as a wife.....how he likes his tea prepared in the morning, how much he drinks alcohol, what time he goes to bed, how he treats his children.................I could go on and on forever but I think these things are so very important......If you only know the "vacation" side of your fiance then the lust will wear off real soon when the day to day living
hits you in America........

Seriously, I couldn't have stayed at Tony's apartment even if I had wanted to. It was very tiny and him and his cousin shared the ONE bedroom. I don't think we could have fit 3 people in a double bed  We did spend alot of time with his family and friends though so I really didn't miss out on any of the stuff you mentioned - except his favorite fabric softener which he didn't have because he'd never used a real washer before :P I even went to work with him on more than one occasion so I know all the people he worked with and how he interacted w/ them as well as how he interacted with the tourists. I also got to go up in the hills and see where he grew up - they have electricity now but didn't when he was a kid. Still no real bathrooms and they only have running water sometimes - or just no water pressure. I have also visited (numerous tmes) his mom's house, his dad's house and workplace, and the home of his baby's mama where his kids live - even though I never actually went inside at that one! "She" doesn't exactly adore me! :P

But, I agree, if we had never left the hotel I wouldn't know anything about him! I was joking around the last time we went down there, I finally got to do the White River tubing. I had been wanting to do it forever, but we never did the touristy stuff before. I laughed that I was finally acting like a tourist - now that I'm married to a Jamaican

Thank you all again for letting me vent. I promise to refrain for any more long missives for awhile. Maybe its best anyway to let the board get back to lighter matters. Just please say a prayer for me in the meantime (F)

Don't worry about it  That's what we're here for. And don't worry about your long posts - thndrdncr has you beat in that category anyways  :P I personally like these deep topics - I think it helps everyone to get the total picture of things - not just the light, fun stuff.

One bit of advice that I would tell anyone new.....go stay in Jamaica and stay with your fiance at his house in his environment.....hand wash clothes...shower without hot water, live without running water, cook Jamaican food and live without air conditioning.

No thank you   More power to you though! No wonder you could afford to go down to Jamaica so often :D

I think that some (or most) of us **want** to answer your questions, but really....the "newbies" ARE going to be the veterans because everything has changed sooooo much since we've all gone through this.

I agree! Everything has changed since me and Tony went through the process  When we did it, you didn't even need an interview date!! As soon as you picked up packet 3 and had all your documents in order you just showed up at the Embassy any Monday thru Friday at 7am  Also, we didn't need the non-impediment to marriage document. Also, there was no courier service to pick up the Visa. We simply returned to the Embassy 4 days later and picked it up! LOTS of changes since then.

Today must be my lucky day! I called the embassy and got thru on the first try  and I've got a interview date March 20 at 915

Awesome! Congrats :D

With flying standby -using an airline employees pass.....you're the *last* to get on the plane and can check in and be put on the standby list up to 4 hours prior ...and just sit and play the waiting game.

Thanks Kelly :) I hate sitting around in airports as it is - I would hate flying stand-by <_<

Have you guys heard that parts of New York have gotten like 10 feet of snow recently??? :o :o That's crazy!! Does anyone know anyone who lives in upstate New York? I guess they're blaming it on Lake Ontario and the fact that it's not frozen over this year. They're calling it "lake effect snow". I guess we should consider ourselves lucky that we're only dealing with severe cold and not all that snow

And yes it is stand-by but I am prepared! It is US Airways and if there are any seats in First Class, it's only $20.00 to upgrade, I've never flown first class hmmmmm....

Are you sure of those prices? We just paid $50 to upgrade to 1st class from Detroit to Philly and another $200 from Philly to Barbados on U.S. Airways  How does stand-by work? You go to the airport and check your luggage and then hope you get on a plane? How do you get your luggage back if you can't get on? I've never done it before and always wondered.
