US Citizenship General DiscussionIf your original nationality on the certificate is wrong?
On the other hand - the naturalization certificate is only good for getting the passport and so what it says about previous nationality doesn't matter. On the US passport it only lists country of birth and that may be important to be correct in case Taiwan allows dual nationality etc. By the way - you will be a US citizen soon so your loyalty now lies with US not with any other country - if you think in those terms, it may not 'bother' you so much. As it is, try and get it corrected at the oath ceremony - perhaps it will all be OK. Good Luck

US Citizenship General DiscussionOath Ceremony today in Denver, Colorado
QUOTE (waiting4visas @ Jun 10 2009, 04:52 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Congratulations Motu...How long did it take to hand out 300 certificates at the end?

Zero - they were pre-packaged in envelopes on the chairs that each person was assigned. When they opened it; the packet had several things like a copy of the constitution etc. along with the unsigned Naturalization Certificate. So, they must assign people seats based on their name or number and then the packets are placed on those seats accordingly and the people are directed to their specific seat. SO, no time spent in distribution of certificates. Good Luck

Out of curiosity, who administered the Oath? A federal judge? USCIS official?

A USCIS official.
For my own citizenship - a few years ago - it was done in the federal court and the oath was administered by a federal judge. I made some scanned copies of my own documents and shredded them - I will do the same with my wife's too, but I might wait till she gets her passport.
Thanks all and Good Luck to all;
Thanks for deleting the duplicate post Kathryn.

US Citizenship General DiscussionOath Ceremony today in Denver, Colorado
We were told to report at 9.15 and there was big line of people already. My wife got in the que and we waited in the sitting area. They just took her signed sheet of paper and her greencard, nothing else (I had documents in the car - just in case - but didn't bring them in). The ceremony started after about one hour (Around 10.15) - they had two or three videos and couple of speakers and then they had everybody stand up as they called out the names of their countries and then they were given the oath and then the pledge. It lasted about 40 - 45 minutes. There were around 300 new citizens from 80 countries - so quite a crowd. They had passport processors and voter registration people there but we didn't want to do that - we went to a Chinese restaurant - but it was closed - so Vietnamese instead!
Some friends and my sister were there also - but I think its quite a lot of time spent just waiting around. by the way - the naturalization certificate is unsigned - so my wife will sign it later on today (No one asked then to sign it). We may go to the post-office for passport application tomorrow. I will shred all the documents we have starting from the K1 application!

US Citizenship General DiscussionCitizenship Denied
We didn't; but have heard of others being delayed or denied. Some of my wife's friends from the citizenship class had that happen to them. One was rescheduled to produce more documents of her AOS to satisfy the examiner (The woman couldn't explain to her how she got her greencard). Another had to produce a current utility statement to show they were both still living together (she had filed based on the 3 year rule). But for most parts - almost everyone from her class passed the test and are waiting for the oath (for some reason, her oath was before anyone else's in her class - even some of those that had passed a month or more before her). Good Luck

Not correct. You also need to be able to pass the 'English' test - you need to read a sentence or two and write a sentence (besides conversing with the interviewer) - they are all very simple but the test is of two parts - English and Civics. Good Luck

I got the oath letter today!!! kicking.gif kicking.gif kicking.gif

At last, 2 plus months after my interview, it is finally here.

I have a question though, aside from your greencard, what else did you bring that maybe needed in the ceremony? I saw a box that is marked with an X which says to bring "Any immigration documents you may have"... does it mean I have to bring my original files? Or anything in particular?

Thanks a lot.

If you traveled out of the country or got arrested or any of those type of things that you answered "Yes" to (since the interview); you need documents to explain those and that's what they mean by it. For most people they just take the greencard and oath letter. Good Luck

Thanks for the advice re: lawyer I will definately do that because I believe we would have done a better job by ourselves

You are right and caught up in a mistake with this. Because the case was dropped/expunged I would probably have done the same thing you did, you really didn't do anything wrong, but then the IO must have been curious and wanted to make sure that his record was absolutely clean before proceeding, so I can see that side also. Basically, lesson learned - make sure and carry all the papers for everything concerned with your life in this process - just to be safe. Most of us have very straight forward cases, so haven't had to deal with anything like that, your case has its potential issues. Good Luck

Make sure he carries all the documents with him. And ask the lawyer for his money back - if he doesn't - report him to the state bar/board detailing his shoddy practice. Each state has it so you can definitely put another black mark on his record. Good Luck

US Embassy and Consulate Discussionnewbie question on affidavit forms!
Most consulates require the I134 to be filed for the K1 and then during AOS (Adjustment of Status - or applying for the Green card) you will need to fill out an I864. There is no transfers. Yes the same person can sponsor (or co sponsor) for I134 or I864 or different people. Check out the poverty guidelines to figure out if you need a co-sponsor or not. Good Luck

Hey Padhu - you may be in a tough spot. The only realistic way to do this would be for your cousin to move to a state where it is legal to marry the first cousin. Moving to another state is not so easy in terms of finding another job, selling the old home and buying a new home etc. You need to have your cousin figure out what he/she can do to make this work. US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionObservation...
It depends on many things - I think some consulates do not divulge the names for security reasons - kidnapping threats and murder threats against Americans are not uncommon in India during random protests for example. Also, it depends on your demeanor - When your name is called - do you walk up to the window and stand their with hands folded or do you walk up to them and say," My name is Bond, James Bond. And you are?" laughing.gif
When I had my interview in New Delhi - I told the woman, "I am Motu. How are you?" She told me her first name. I asked her where she was from; she was from Baltimore. I told her I had never been to Baltimore but would like to go there if and when I get a chance to visit DC (I knew about the geography). She asked me where had I been, I told her I was in Utah and its gorgeous in Southern Utah (YEs it is). She told me to come back at 2.00 and pick up my visa (Immigrant Visa).
I think, depending on your approach, the other person may or may not reveal their names - of course you could ask, but then what would you do with the name (unless they harass you then perhaps you can complain). Good Luck

thanks a lot in advanced! biggrin.gif
Phil heart.gif Adel

This is the norm at some consulates e.g. Colombia. They send out Packet 3 - the beneficiary fills out the paper work and sends it (or just one or two pages) back and then they get the packet 4 with the medical and interview information. So I think you are progressing correctly with the packet 3 at this point. Good Luck

Im feeling a little discouraged at the moment... My income is under the 125% and i dont have anyone who would be willing to cosponser for me... Is there anybody out there with a similar situation? I know I have to get a second job part time to put me over the 125 but will they consider that sufficent enough if I get the job now? i havent sent out my i-29 yet so i know i have a little time, but by the time i have to send the income stuff out to my fiance I will probably only have a few paystubs to show proof of the second job, it wont even be on last years tax reports ( seeing how i dont even have the second job yet whistling.gif )... If someone has been through something like this it would be great to have some insight. thanks alot

Do you have no family or friends who can do this for you? All they need to be is a resident (they don't need to be a citizen). Most Indians have tons of friends and family here - are you not an Indian? Ask your friends/co-workers etc. - you may find a sponsor. Good Luck

Just file your 2005 taxes - showing zero income if that's the case. You may actually have income and be below the taxable threshold, so do fill it out based on your W-2. Then you can use the copy of it for your submittal. Even if you do not have to file taxes - you still can file taxes and use the documentation for purposes 'other' than taxes. Good Luck

US Embassy and Consulate DiscussionBog embasy sent pack 3 but fience never recieved?
If you know the case number - then your fiancee should be able to get all the documents together and fax the one (or is it two) pages back to Bogota in the meantime. Basically the packet 3 has a list of documents that he/she needs to gather and a couple pages that he/she faxes back to Bogota stating that he/she has gathered all the documents. This gets the process rolling for packet 4 - which is the interview date and medical exam process and fees etc. If you have a packet 3 from a previous filing - you fiancee can use it to do her own. You definitely need the case number to do this step though. Good Luck

QUOTE (BigCityDave @ Apr 10 2008, 06:24 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
Don't understand why it wouldn't hurt. If you have it why not show it?

If you send a little more evidence because it makes you feel comfortable - that's good (mostly for your comfort). If you send in too much it can annoy the examiner - remember they are only going to spend 2 or 3 minutes with each candidate - they will ask you for things that you can give to them to support your case when asked for - no need to take a suitcase of evidence when a small folder will do. And why would you kill all these trees by using excessive documents and then copying them. But in the end, its your petition/visa and you do what makes you feel comfortable. Remember if you give bank/asset/real estate info, then you also need to provide documentation to back it up e.g. a bank statement showing the balance; a statement from the stock broker/mutual funds people showing the value of investments; a property tax notice and mortgage statement providing the value of your ownership - it seems an overkill when all they want to know is that you can support this extra person or persons.
Good Luck

How does it work for retired persons?

Thanks

I am also retired. A retired person can show a statement from Social security - if that's the source of their retirement or as in my case - a private retirement institute - I tell them to send me a letter of verification of income and that's what they give me. It shows how much money every month I will receive and for how long (my case it is life time). I would then attach my tax return or returns (if they want three years returns for example). In case, they have their own personal retirement - then they can show statements of their funds from the annuity company; stock brokers/mutual funds people. Good Luck
