Hope you're back to stay Nich-Nick , you're a bit of a legend here. :)

I'm not sure, to be honest. K3's are bloody rare. Usually if you don't pay online in some way they'll let you do it there on the day. But still easier to get it done beforehand.

United KingdomKnightsbridge now denies on past Depression/Self-harm

No, it's time for your wakeup call.

You have been told to behave by one of the moderators, yet you've continued to insult the single most knowledgeable member of this part of the forums as well as several others, dismissing their experiences because of the sole overriding belief that you are right above all others. You have gone around spreading fear and misinformation which other members then have to counter and clean up - the others have provided evidence to show that around the world the doctors who do embassy medicals do not have the power to deny a visa. They can ask for further evidence to show a condition isn't an issue, and that includes a psych exam if needs be.

I'll tell you what really happens. At the first window you go to, they look at your medical file and on their little checklist to hand off to the consular officer who actually makes the decision on your visa they put if you have Class A, Class B or Neither when it comes to your medical. I had 2 Class B's - specifically recent stomach surgery, and asthma. I'm now on the other side of the Atlantic, happily married because the doctor did his job at the time of my medical by asking for information from my surgery consultant. They didn't deny me then and there in the doctor's office.

And as for "covering up the truth" and people "speculating" - again, they have provided hard facts to back up their assertions. You have not. The one who needs their eyes opening is you, not us. And while I certainly can't speak for the rest of the gang who help out here, as one of the people who used to on a daily basis - you will get no further help if you continue insulting those volunteers who do give their time freely and willingly.

Hence why I'm looking forward to Brutopia opening. Not sure which style they're going for but I think it's Texas style given they have a smoker and are intending to use rubs by the looks of the pictures. Plus beer brewed on the premises.

Unfortunately, the local Mexican restaurant here in Cranston closed last year. It was awesome.. but it was clear it was dying as there were only 2-3 tables filled (including us). Still trying to find a replacement that doesn't really involve us having to go into Providence itself.

I went to Luxe over the weekend, by the by. Apart from the fact that it took the waitress 20 mins to come and collect the check, it was pretty damned good.

If it were me.. I'd miss four things.

1) The eggrolls at Eggroll Cafe. Eggrolls with cheeseburger in them? Buffalo Chicken? Yum.

2) The Katsu Curry at Ebisu. You can probably get that at Wagamama but it just wouldn't be the same.

3) Taco Bell. The missus and I have made it a point to have it when she comes home from work on a Wednesday night. Taco Wednesday, clearly.

4) Red Robin. Those burgers are the shiznit.

Well, I'm also on my way out. As I just said to some other members, life's too short to be stressing out over an internet forum and frankly I'm tired of being treated like a retard by the Old Guard of the place.

Good luck to those of you going through the process.

United KingdomNich-Nick is Missing in Action

To all you kind supporters:

Wow! Who knew anybody would miss me?  I don't seek attention, controversy, or to be one of the popular kids.  I just give from my heart to those I see struggling  to be with their loved ones.  For my entire life, if there is something I can do or share to help somebody, then I do it out of kindness.

I give hours daily to VJ because there is always just one more person who seems so sincere and needy that I hate to leave them hanging.  So when I opened my iPad one evening to check on my people, I see I have been suspended for 24 hours. There is no reason why. I can't see anything...no threads, no mailbox, no profile, no click here.  I was very deeply hurt by what felt like a kick in the teeth when I didn't do anything intentionally wrong. So I decided to move on. I don't fight back, and I don't play time-out games. I'm a volunteer.  If it is hurtful, then walk away.

After maybe nine days away, I opened VJ again to check on progress of a couple of people I cared about. I had a PM from someone I was aware of as a regular that I don't normally interact with. It was about tax form 8938. So I replied that I was no longer posting on VJ, but if he still needed help I would be happy to discuss it by email.  I guess he informed the UK posse.  I didn't mean to  cause a VJ bashing riot.

I want you to know that I have had very kind messages from the the Big Kahunas. They are caring people and provide an amazing service.   As for me, this long period of  not reading posts keeps my heart from being tugged.  It's like going into Petco. If I don't go over to the cages of kitties up for adoption, then I am not tempted to bring one home.  I just had a quick read of the UK forum, and there are many posts with incorrect info or uncertain replies that I could fine tune. You are correct that somebody with a six year history of a particular area has seen it all and can offer more than the blind leading the blind.  But those people will work it out and get their visas, even it it takes a little longer, they make mistakes,  or they stress a little more.

Meanwhile I have a long list of things to do for myself like finish clearing my  desk so I can remember what color the wood is.  Work is never as much fun for me as bringing comfort to a person in need, but I am going to give it a whirl and see how long I can stick to it.

Thank you all so much.

I'll keep the light on for you. In the meantime, I guess someone needs to help the new K1s and it might as well be me for the time being, until something takes me away. Not like I have much else to do apart from paint models, and those are nearly all done.

Make your opinions known. Don't let them win this. Nich is our friend and mentor. While I didn't need her help going through my London process, I needed her help in constructing the guide for everyone else to follow. And she does far more than help the UK guys - she helps out with AOS, she helps people out with their taxes. She's one of the true helpers of this site and doesn't deserve to be treated like an animal.

We've also lost Lost now, as you're aware. So out of the three of us who look after the UK forum on a daily basis, it's now just me. And if this keeps up, there will be no-one.

VanitasMaleUnited Kingdom2014-03-20 13:11:00
United KingdomNich-Nick is Missing in Action

So as I've mentioned in another thread, Nich-Nick is currently no longer on these forums.

The reasoning for this is because about two weeks ago, she was suspended for a comment in another thread. We're not entirely sure what the offence is because the moderators are hiding behind the TOS (e.g. they won't tell me) and Nich herself disputes the warning, but cannot post to this effect until she even accepts said warning. Since then, she's said she's had enough of VJ and won't be coming back anytime soon.

Now, most of you who've been through the K1 process in the past will know who she is and how she helped you out. In the last couple of weeks, it's just been me and some of the more recent K1 successes. She's held the UK forum together alongside myself, Lost and those who have stuck around here and there to help out even after they've moved.

I'll be the first to say that my knowledge isn't as complete as hers, but that's why we pooled our resources and wrote the K1 guide. So I'll be the first to ask the following things:

*If you have new information to add to the guide about something that's changed, please post it in the Guide thread.

*If you need help, please read the guide first - if your question isn't answered, then post a new thread and ask it. If it is answered in the guide, then you'll be linked to the specific post of the guide where the answer is.

As for Nich.. well, we're discussing what the heck is going on down here: http://www.visajourn...view=getnewpost - If you want to add your voice and say this was unjust, go right ahead.

Though I'm obviously not expecting it to be here for another 2 weeks yet, my case has been recreated as a NIV case with creation and updated dates as of today. So hopefully it'll move into AP within the next 24 hours, Issued within the next 72.

where did you get the option to ask for a before 10:00 service? I do not recall seeing that, just the depot delivery or home delivery for the extra $30.

Yeah, it seems with all the screwups with the online system they've gone back to having a courier desk in the embassy as a backup. Not the same place as before apparently but it's there and you get more options than you do with the online system.

You're better off asking in the Asia: South forum than the UK forum. The procedure in Islamabad is not the same as London due to varying fraud levels.

United KingdomPlease...

...don't send me PMs asking for personal assistance with your case. I stopped reading these forums a couple of months ago and before that I said I wouldn't be assisting any further with UK K1's (let alone any other kind of visa type) because people were treating me like an idiot. At this point, I'm only around to update my timeline and to read up on the next stages in the entire process such as ROC and Naturalization and maybe check in from time to time to see how some of the old crowd are doing.

So, again. Please don't PM me, especially if it's not a K1 inquiry. There are plenty of others here who are knowledgeable and can help.

United KingdomHow long did it take you to feel at home in the US?

Personally, it took me a month or so to adjust but then I've always settled down quite quickly into new places/situations. I do get gawked at sometimes here in RI when ordering food and the like (and I don't mean a subtle gawk, I mean a widening-of-the-eyes-and-mouth-agape kind). For me part of settling in quickly was down to finding new friends in my hobbies over here.

That being said, it's not all sunshine and roses. It annoys the living hell out of me that my wife's family treat her as if she's an outcast and that nothing she does is right. She deserves better than that kind of treatment.

I don't think there's anything stopping you from paying off such things while abroad. You have to do it with Student Loans, I don't see why it would be any different for other kinds of debt as well.

Ah yes, i missed that one, sorry! Good idea about the doctors note too.

Aye. Here's the CBP article on Medication - as I thought, there are some meds that cannot be brought in. If they contain what is classed as narcotics (for example, some of the stronger painkillers) then you must have a doctor's note or prescription with them. Which is pretty standard practice these days.

Agreed with Jo. Also, if you're on any medication/contraceptive pills try to stock up before you go!

That's in the original list I made, if you'll take a read. I also mentioned that if you're taking a lot of meds you may need a doctor's letter just in case your suitcase gets opened and you get asked questions.

What is that regarding needing the "transcripts for every year of secondary education completed" though? Surely our certificates would be enough? I have my certificates but after reading that website, I have no idea what the hell they're going to need. What is everyone else doing?

Unfortunately not. And I'll explain why I *think* they aren't.

I was looking at becoming a teacher and therefore having to do a Master's over in the States to enable this. When they list the entry requirements they usually talk about coursework or things you should have covered in your Bachelor's degree in order to be eligible straight off the bat (usually you can take courses to bring you up to speed if you aren't). The transcript from University will detail every single module you took. When you then have that transcript looked at by one of the companies in the US, I suspect they then look at your University's module guide (or course guide, whatever) to work out exactly what you had to do to pass that module. I also think they'll translate your grades into the US system of GPAs and all that so you can be assessed for that requirement as well.

In short? If you have a degree, it'd be a good idea to contact your University to get a transcript sorted. Mine from Kent Uni will cost £10 or so.

United KingdomThings you need to do before leaving the UK

When I did an adv. search for threads like this, I found that while they started off well they tended to get derailed big time because they didn't focus on the subject matter (the last one went from "you need to do this" to "I want to get this food to take with me" to "I'm going to be living near you"). Others got ignored and pushed to the bottom of the pile.

I would like this thread to be the main resource for things you need to do or cover before you leave for the US from the United Kingdom. Hence I will be dividing it into sections and anyone can contribute items that they know of which needs to be sorted before you go.

Government (inc. Taxes)

-File Form P85 with Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.

-Check with Jobcentre Plus regarding any benefits you are currently claiming. Most will stop when you move abroad (like JSA and ESA).

-Inform your Local Council you are leaving. You may be able to claim back Council Tax for the time you won't be in the UK if you paid it in one blast up front.

Medical

-Get your Medical Records from the Doctor's. You may have to pay for this. Also inform Doctor's you're emigrating and thus will be leaving the surgery.

-Stock up on any vital medications you will need whilst changing over to a US Doctor. Be aware that some items (or large quantities of items) will need a Doctor's Letter verifying you actually need the medication.

Financial

-Inform your Bank that you are moving abroad to the States. You might want to keep the account open to avoid exchange rate fees when you visit the UK.

-Transfer any savings or anything in that vein over to where you want it to be (be it in a UK or US account).

-Cancel any Insurance Policies you won't need in the US (Car, for example).

-If you're expecting a pension you may need to check on whether it can be paid in the US or if you need to take action now.

Employment

-Hand your Notice in and make sure you get the length of time right. You might lose pay or the like if you don't.

-See if you can get a reference to take over with you, sealed in an envelope (if on good terms with employer).

-Don't do anything silly on your last day of work which might jeopardize you being able to leave for the States. tongue.png

Possessions

-Anything of sentimental value you can't pack could be couriered over pre-move in plenty of time. Check around for costs and applicable regulations at Customs and Border Protection.

-Get any last items of food or drink you want to take over with you to tide you over, again keeping in mind the Customs regulations (see link above).

-Sell anything you can't take or don't want to take. Ebay or local shops may be an idea. Charity shops are also an excellent idea.

-If renting accomodation make sure it is clean and tidy, nothing is missing from your inventory and the Landlord knows where to send a deposit refund to (or a bill for damages/cleaning).

-Make sure your Mobile Phone is unlocked and therefore can accept a US Simcard to save on roaming and all.

Family/Friends

-Make sure your family can get hold of you in an emergency (be it via email, social media, phone or whatever you choose). You might find that teaching family members to use Skype or the like is a good idea.

-In a similar vein, make sure that you have a nice send-off with your friends and family so they can all see you before you go. This may be the last chance you get for the next six months or so.

--------

What else do you think needs to be added under these categories, guys?

You'd be better off getting them for free before the medical and having the records updated and printed there and then like I did. If memory serves for IR/CR1 and DCF all vaccines must be complete at the time of the medical/visa interview anyway. K1 does not, as they have to have them all complete by AOS.

DS-3025 is also not really an issue for anyone going down the IR/CR1 route, or the DCF route for those either. It's a K1 thing and that's the form you send in with AOS instead of having to go to a Civil Surgeon if you don't get all your shots done in the UK.

Actually, the UK requires anybody intending to stay for more than 6mths to undergo a medical or depending where they're coming from, testing for TB. Plenty of other countries also require full medical examinations for visa's that lead to Permanent Residence, including Australia, NZ and Canada.

No country wants to accept an immigrant with TB or who has chronic, on-going health issues that may end up burdening their health care system.

Eventually, this will probably grow to include things like obesity. Eventually.

United KingdomLondon Medical - Knightsbridge Doctors

Right so! Sitting in Victoria coach station as I write this haha.

Arrived in London with my mum at Victoria, went and took a taxi to Bentinck street, the driver dropped us right outside the doctors. Since we were realllly early we headed to Oxford street to look in the shops and grab something to eat while we waited for it to get to my appointment time.

Arrived at the doctors. Now, I'm gonna be honest with you guys: I found this whole thing a bit upsetting though I was extremely anxious the entire time.

Went to reception and was asked to hand my passport (which they keep hold of til the end of the medical) a passport photo, police certificate, and vaccination records. I was told to go take a seat in the waiting area.

I was called in for the X-ray first. Was asked if I had one before, I hadn't. Had to remove clothing on my top half and wear some little gown type thing. I...had no idea how a healthy chest X-ray result looked so I  was super scared there was something wrong (I'm a worrier ^^wink.png but I was told to go to a waiting area for women. Me and my mum chatted to a lady in the waiting room about NOA2 times which was cool tongue.png

Then I was called in for a medical. Checked my eyes, ears, reflex test, eye test, blood pressure. checked my upper half and lower half (pretty embarrassing but it has to be done sad.png ) went through the questionnaire and was asked about my previous depression. Doctor asked me to take some letter to my GP so that she could give them more information. I was pretty upset by this thinking it was going to mess up my visa for some depression I suffered briefly when I was a little younger :/

Then he did the blood test, but couldn't get blood out of either arm. He said I seemed very dehydrated and to go drink a bunch of water. I returned to the waiting area pretty upset, thinking not only this depression thing was going to mess with my visa, AND the fact they couldn't get no blood out of me. So I was mega worried. I also asked him about the form I'm supposed to have for AOS and he looked at me like I was crazy so I stopped asking. He was kind of stern because I kept asking questions but I was worried so ^^;

But! Then the nurse called me through and she was AWESOME. She was really nice and saw I was upset. I explained I was worried because of what the doctor told me, thinking my visa would be declined or whatever. But she reassured me a lot of people had to go get more info from their GP, and that they'd hold my results until they get a letter faxed by my doctor. She attempted to take my blood again but no luck yet again xD told me to drink even more water and shed call me back in.

After like...6 or 7 cups of water, she called me back in. We got a tiny amount of blood and she said that was good enough. She went through my vaccinations and said I needed a flu jab. She joked with me and said she's sorry for stabbing me with so many needles xD so after the flu jab she explained the vaccination form and told me to keep hold of it for AOS.

After I was finally finished I was called to reception to pay. They gave me all my forms but they spelled my name wrong so they had to amend it. xD they handed back my passport also.  The receptionist was also really polite.

I feel kind of silly for getting so upset but I get very anxious and had been panicking all week haha. I'm really glad it's over. If you're the type of person to get easily nervous just try to be brave ^^

So pretty much what's happened is they're holding onto my results until I get my doctor to write and fax a letter, THEN they will send it to the embassy. So sadly a bit of a delay but I'm seeing my GP ASAP!

So if you were having your medical today and you saw some girl drinking a ton of water and being sad/worried, it was me! XD but hopefully it'll all be fine and I was silly for worrying tongue.png

If you're going to admit to depression, you should have a letter prepared from your GP to hand over when you go for the medical. The key thing they're looking for in said letter is essentially the words "Not dangerous to self or others".

That said? I got hit with a letter asking for information about my gastric band surgery. So I fell into the same trap as well. Nothing to worry about.

VanitasMaleUnited Kingdom2014-01-15 15:20:00
United KingdomLondon Medical - Knightsbridge Doctors

So I had my appointment at 1:50pm - but as always they were running quickly so I got seen at 1:30pm instead. Met Dr. Huang first. Seemed very jovial however we've hit a small snag regarding - surprise, surprise - the gastric band. My discharge sheet with all the stuff on it wasn't good enough so I've got to get basically a letter outlining prognosis and future care. Which I'd need anyway for the final move itself else no doctor would take me on.

Went through the motions - weight, height, checked to see my questionnaire answers were correct, blood pressure ("1 point and you'd be in trouble!") as well as ear, mouth, nose and eye checks. Also got the stethoscope treatment on front and back. Then came the "fun" part. Yes, I got the crown jewels checked for Cancer. Then the good Doctor had issues with drawing my blood for the syphilis test - we got there in the end though with a deep vein.

After that, I was guided directly into the X-Ray room to be met by a nice chap there. He asked if I'd ever had a chest X-Ray - I replied with "I've never had -any- X-Rays before!" so he came over and got me all set up, explaining why he had to do things. He then showed me the images and seemed to think there were no issues with my chest, so it was back on with my shirt and off to the Nurse.

Now Zoe, my immigration nurse was wonderful. She was really bubbly and made everything nice and simple and we had a good old chat about the visa process and all. I had my MMR done because my local GP didn't do Adult MMRs (however, Zoe felt that as I was 25 I could still have one of the child ones and be in the clear so she admonished my GP for that one). She explained the DS-3025 and the fact that despite the fact that the "Blanket Waivers" box was ticked, it really meant nothing in my case as I had all three jabs - which she also gave me a verbal high-five for.

The only bad parts were the slightly rude receptionist (except when it was time to pay, then they're your best friend) and the issue regarding the gastric band surgery. Word to the wise: If you've had ANY kind of major surgery or illness which has needed extensive treatment, get your evidence of what happened, your prognosis and your potential future care in a letter from your consultant or GP before you go. Save yourself the worry.

Nich's right on this one folks. The NHS went and lost my notes from pretty much before 2003 so I have to have my MMR and DTaP redone at some point within the next few weeks. Do NOT trust the NHS to have kept records of your childhood shots - send a written request for your records and if they've lost them, say you need the missing jabs either put on the record or redone.

Was the information that P3 hadn't been despatched first volunteered ? I can see why they might say no as the procedure is to get your P3 letter and then book an appointment. When I booked I just said I wanted to book K1 medical and she asked me my case number and that was it. I didn't volunteer any other information. This was mid July.

I'll check with her (or you guys can in the K1 Progress forum under the May Filers topic).

United KingdomLondon Medical - Knightsbridge Doctors

Quick one here.. has anyone heard about a new policy in place at Knightsbridge now where you cannot make an appointment until London physically have your case? One of the other May filers (Nurseling) was saying in the May Filers thread that she attempted to make her medical appointment as soon as she got her LND number, and was told she couldn't do it until London had pretty much sent her Packet 3. Doesn't seem to make sense, I wouldn't have thought that the embassy would share case details with Knightsbridge.
