United KingdomI am...
Answering for my Jonny:

Born in England, raised in England, considers himself Yorkshire and would even narrow it down to Leeds.

When asked about him I reply with one of two statements: "He's from England." or "He's from Northern England." The second phrase I reserve for people who are smart enough and won't reply with, "OH! You mean Scotland!"

I myself was born in America, raised in America and consider myself an American when talking to someone outside the US but refer to myself as a Texan to anyone inside the US. Although it would seem that some states are more region specific than others and I could safely say I am from Texas and non-US folk would know where that was. (Then make lame jokes about cowboys and horses, I live in a beach town full of surfers)

Now onto this question about citizenship. How would getting a passport in another country change your nationality? When I get British citizenship does that give me the right to say I'm British? I would think it would only give me the right to say I am a British citizen. The same would go for anyone immigrating to the US. You're still British but are now an American citizen. Just my $.02

Malcolm (Hubby) was born and bred in Coldstream, Scotland. I was born in Corpus Christi, TX but have lived in Rhode Island, California, Hawaii, England and now Scotland (Dad was in Navy) but don't think of anywhere as home really. Home is wherever my family is.

COOL! I'm from Corpus too! I still haven't managed to escape yet.

United KingdomHow Did You Meet Your USC/UKC?
I had joined a dating site, plentyoffish.com, shortly after getting separated just to get out, meet people and not sit a home thinking about the bad times. I went out on some horrible dates. They were so bad just to get out of them early, I started talking about my failed marriage

One night I thought, well I just want a new friend to talk to, someone that doesn't know anything about me or where I'm from, start off with a clean slate. It was about 2 or 3 am so I thought I would look at other countries and see what they had to offer. When I checked out England, by about the 3rd profile I saw him. Same interests, new in his town and looking for friends as well, and damn was he cute! I decided NOT to email him thinking, 'what am I doing? what if he and I end up liking each other? Do I really want to go through another LDR?' A few days later I was still thinking about him and though, hell, who cares what happens, if anything we can at least crash on each other's couches if we want to visit, I just want a friend.

The rest of the story you can see in my sig :luv:

United KingdomHas anyone thought about going the other way???
I'm actually moving to the UK first, gain citizenship then we will move back to the US. Works out better for us in a number of ways.
  1. Together sooner
  2. He has a much better job than me, I could not afford to support him while we wait for his EAD, he says I pretty much have a job waiting where he works.
  3. Something I've always wanted to do anyway, live abroad.
  4. After 2 years we are eligible for DCF. He comes over on a green card and is able to work.

You just need to make a list of pros and cons and talk about it, see which way would be better for you as a couple.

Good Luck!

United KingdomThinking ahead for DCF in London
Just moved to Hull, UK on 13 December, 2007. The plan is, we stay here and I eventually get my British citizenship and passport. Soon after we file for DCF to move back to the US.

I'm already having to get things lined up for my ILR and later citizenship but what I'm wondering now is, what should I start keeping track of now for our DCF? I know I will need tax returns and bank statements, but are there any other items I should be holding on to NOW?

Also, for now I am keeping busy as a housewife so I have very little income other than left over commissions coming in from my old job. I may or may not get a job later but as for now, we are doing very well with the one income. Will this hurt us later when we try to file or can we have sponsors in the US other than myself?

I'm looking for personal experiences of UK DCF so this is why I am posting it here since some countries are different.

While I'm here, does anyone know where I can get decent tortillas in the UK? wacko.gif I'm nervous about making my own and the Tesco's brand are... well they're #######. I just moved here a little more than 4 months ago but the countdown is already on for when we do DFC to move back to the states together after I become a British Citizen.

I guess it will be a little bit after I become a citizen since I'm sure that's going to cost us an arm and a leg in 3 years unsure.gif

United KingdomOption of living in the UK instead of USA
Yes, it takes about a week or two to get a visa back, it cost us last December just over 500 pounds. Yes she can get NHS as soon as she steps off the plane (as long as you're married). Yes she is allowed to work in the UK (once again, as long as you're married.) She can get a National Insurance Number at a local job center which handles the interviews. The only thing she is NOT allowed which is similar to the US anyway is recourse to public funds. Oh yeah, not allowed to vote either.

uk-yankee has a lot of good info and if you ever want any personal experience, you can PM me as I'm currently living in the UK on a FLR visa good.gif If you are located close enough, I would love to meet up with her if she ever gets lonely. Sometimes you miss a familiar accent and just want to rant about things you miss from home.

United KingdomU.K.
Hull's pretty cheap cost of living wise, but there's a reason for that, it's a shithole. It's always in the top 5 for Worst place to live in the UK.

source.

Hull trains can get you directly to/from London in around 3 hours.

One good point to the town is, there are overnight cruises to Amsterdam or Bruges starting around 70 pounds per person round trip. Pretty sad when the best thing to do in this town is to go out of town! laughing.gif

United KingdomUK Citizenship Test - When to take it?
QUOTE (thepettle @ Jul 30 2009, 03:42 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So if thats the case could I take it now even though I haven't been here 2 years? and could I move eventually in 5 years or whatever (example) and still be considered as indefinite leave to remain here and move back if I wanted 10 years down the line?

I don't really understand.

Sounds like you're exactly where I am. I've been living in the UK with an FLR for less than two years and am about to take my life in the UK test to get my ILR. I will eventually go for citizenship. Here's the timeline:

Just before your two years is up, you take the life in the UK test and apply for the ILR. After your THIRD year in the UK you can apply for UK citizenship since you're on a spousal visa (I think it's 5 years if you're on other visas, don't quote me on that but I am absolutely sure about the three year wait). You will then be a dual citizen of both the US and UK.

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me cos I may forget to check back blush.gif

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresFree to marry??

Another thing, I know I may have misspelled some words and some may begin a flame war over that alone, but I have no idea where spellcheck is here. Anyone know?

When you write a reply in a thread, look for the little "ABC" with a checkmark. That will be your spellchecker.
To go off topic here, I too am a KISS fan. I first saw them on August 16, 1977 in San Francisco, the night Elvis died. I've seen them countless times since then along with Paul Stanley on his solo tours as well as meeting a couple of the members.
Now, back to the topic!

Hmm I don't see an ABC with a check mark anywhere... maybe because I am using Firefox?

Ohh I've seen Kiss 3 times now, all with the makeup! dosen't really count if this was all after the reunion tour lol! I am a huge Kiss fan, I even have a Kiss tattoo on my back! :)

If the terminology still makes you nervous, wait out the 90 days. We are waiting till October only because airfare will be cheaper by then.

Are you aware that the Visa fee's are going up October 1st by about the price of an airline ticket?

Are you also aware that I am immigrating to the UK instead of my fiance immigrating to the US? (Why am I here then? check my time line, this isn't my first rodeo, hence the divorce.)

Dosen't matter anyway, the fees for a settlement visa just doubled to £500 beginning 1 April anyway so I will take a £300 savings anyway I can take it! It's also to save everyone on airfare for the wedding, not just me. Both his parents are flying in from Spain round trip, he's flying in round trip and I will be buying a round trip ticket since it's cheaper than a one way ticket.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresFree to marry??
In order to get a divorce in your local county in Texas, you have to have been a resident of that county for a certain amount of time (either 6 months or 90 days, I don't remember). so then the day you got your divorce, wouldn't you still be a resident of that county and have to abide by it's rules? if you moved to another state the next day, you are still 'technicly' a resident of your former city untill the new state, county or parish says otherwise. I was told I could not file for divorce in Illinois because I was not yet a legal resident of the state, I had to be there 90 days I think it was. I also could not file for divorce once returning to Texas because I had not lived in my local county for the time period they require.

Just some things to think about. Crazy I know. I was pretty upset I had to wait to get divorced. I guess it's a trade off since we have no state income tax here.

Another thing, would the wedding take place in Texas? Because when you remarry, won't the courthouse know when you got divorced? Seperate idea, I know, sorry.

Now what does this mean for the K-1 application? I don't know. I personally would still go ahead with it because like I said, by the time you actually marry, the 90 day waiting period will be over since the 90 days begins the day the divorcing party in Texas gets their final divorce decree. Will the embassy in London know your local state, county or parish's laws about cooling off periods? More than likely not. By the time you get the visa, the 90 days will be up and you will have a free to marry Texan.

If the terminology still makes you nervous, wait out the 90 days. We are waiting till October only because airfare will be cheaper by then.

Another thing, I know I may have misspelled some words and some may begin a flame war over that alone, but I have no idea where spellcheck is here. Anyone know?

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresFree to marry??

and as far as the visa is concerned, as long as she is free to marry by the time you get married it shouldn't be a problem. I mean, 90 days is 3 months, I don't know what the k-1 timeframes are like for UK but are you really going to be getting a visa, fly in to the US and marry before her 90 day divorce cooling off peroid is up? Just to be 100% safe I guess I would just wait out the 90 days before filing. Even mailing out the application on the 90th day.

Actually, the I-129f petition states that you must be free to marry, when you file, under the "Who may file?" section. I understand this to mean that you have to be single/divorced when you send off your application to USCIS, i.e. not be in the process of getting divorced. You have to send proof of final divorce decrees, if applicable, with your petition.
Now the waiting to re-marry...it is 30 days....I doubt a K-1 petition will be approved, sent to UK, interview and visa-in-hand...before that 30 days is up, so the OP should be fine in that respect. :)

well yeah, when you are divorced you are divorced no grey area there. the day you get a divorce you get a final divorce decree no grey area there either, right? so the point I was trying to make is, the day you get your divorce decree in Texas begins the 90 day cool off period where you cannot remarry anyone else other than your ex. 90 days beginning from the day you get your divorce decree. By the time the k-1 application even gets sent off to the embassy, that 90 days would be already up in most cases. This is the grey area. Before that 90 days is over, technicly no you are not free to marry THAT DAY. By the time USCIS gets the paperwork and works on it, the 90 days could be up and THAT DAY you would be free to marry. You see what I'm getting at now? yeah, welcome to Texas

We thought about this because we had thought for a moment to get married in March after I filed for divorce last October. well my ex sat on it so long we didn't think the 90 day period would be over in time so we decided on a visit instead but to get married in the fall. That was when my ex decided to be human and send me the papers.

K-1 Fiance(e) Visa Process & ProceduresFree to marry??
Yes it is true. The judge told me when I got my divorce and it is stated in my divorce papers. As far as I know it is a state wide law but you never know, the time frame may vary from county to county. I live in Nueces County and the 'Cooling Off' period is 90 days unless you choose to remarry your ex, you can do that right away.

and as far as the visa is concerned, as long as she is free to marry by the time you get married it shouldn't be a problem. I mean, 90 days is 3 months, I don't know what the k-1 timeframes are like for UK but are you really going to be getting a visa, fly in to the US and marry before her 90 day divorce cooling off peroid is up?
