Any Colombian documents that will be used here in the States for immigration purposes don't have to be apostilled. You will find a few translators down there that will tell you that you have to just to make the extra bucks, but it's not true. Get the translations without the apostilles.

Now, any US document that will be used in Colombia for whatever purpose, will HAVE to be apostilled or Colombian agencies won't accept them.

Diana

P.S. Lucho is the man, he's helped me a ton on my stuff.

Diana,

Since I will need to bring my divorce cert...would this qualify as being something necessary to be apostilled?

Chester,

Hey would you like to post a list of all the documents that you are taking to the interview? That way some of us here can review anything that you may have forgotten. A checklist sort of speak of all documents, wether or not you have them 'autenticadas', 'notarized', etc. This will help you out a lot. Sometimes we think we have everything and the 1 minor thing we may forget. Just a suggestion.

Hi Lucho,

I've heard the word apostiled mentioned a few times about docs that this was required for...what is that and for which docs?

Excellent advice Mike! As always great advice. Scott, personally I would wait for your novia to come to the US before she learns how to drive. You have been to Barranquilla....remember how they drive?!? You want her to learn GOOD habits. I said to my wife that there are no driving rules in Barranquilla. She replied " There are rules but the people choose not to follow them." Here in CT, a person over 18 is allowed to drive without a drivers permit as long as the instructor has held a CT license for 4 years with suspension. I started to teach my wife after the second week she was here. Now she is doing very well. As Mike mentioned, I got a spanish language driver's manual. My wife speak very good conversational english so it was not very difficult to teach her. I do suggest a spanish speaking drivers school for the novias/esposas who only speak spanish. I however did run into a bit of a bump in the road. I applied for a ss number 2 weeks after my novia arrived. The SS office here screwed up and did not get a ss number in time. ( Remember for K-1 visa, one should wait 2 weeks after arrival to make to apply but not to late. Most SS office will not let you apply 2 weeks before expiration of the I-94. ) So now I have to wait for approval of the EAD or AOS. We really need her to drive as her classes are starting soon and preschool for my daughter. I could however pay for a Colombian drivers license and International drivers permit. She could use these til next March.

So Tony...you are saying that if a Colombian license is in hand then that is good enough to drive in the US at least temporarily with an international drivers permit,

By the way what is an international drivers permit? And where do you get one?

Byron and Scott

I know how everyone feels. I was fortunate and my process went like clockwork. I used the time to prepare for my new familie's arrival and in hindsight, I didn't prepare enough. I have spoken with a few friends and we all were so focused on the visa approval and marriage that we were not ready for the AOS. I suggest using "free" time now to prepare. Check out english classes (ESL), physicians and driving classes for example. When you have the interview date and are ready, then shift your goal ahead a little and start looking at the AOS application. Look to see if there is anything that you should work on getting now. Look to see if there is anything she will need to get before she lives Colombia. Just my 2 cents.

Tony

Hi Tony,

Thank God Yenifer speaks fluent english because yo no hablo mucho espanol (I'm working on that)...As far as the driving...I was thinking to send her to driving school in Colombia for her to get her license there...would that have any benefit in the U S?

Rent receipts? For rental of what? An apartment for the spouse/fiancee in Colombia? Never hear of this before. If there is anything "unique" to your facts and circumstances related to your case, you may want to bring along evidence.

Maybe your are talking about the "declaraciones de renta"...which is your 1040.

By the way, if you have the tax transcript, you don't need copies of your return....and vice versa.

Although the I134 instructions states that you do not have to provide tax returns unless self-employed.

However, Packet 4 says the following

(12)Pruebas de sostenimiento. De su prometido(a) : “Affidavit of Support” –
(Forma I-134) carta de empleo y declaraciones de renta (1040) del último año.

Always provide more, never think that the minimum is sufficient. If they would ask for only 10 photos, give them 20. wink.gif

I also qualified on income alone, no assets. This is what I provided with my I134.

I134
1) Employment letter
2) 3 months of paystubs
3) W2 & 1040 for 2004, 2005, 2006
4) Tax transcripts for 2004, 2005, 2006

Lucho,

Do we have to include rent receipts, too?

I saw that the CO asks Sam y Nydia for this.

I will not get into the vaccination policy or procedures. Wait until your fiance receives packet 3 and see what it says to do. The current packet 3 on the embassys website does not mention a change to vaccines. However, I did see a mentioning to a change, but for a different type of visa, not K1.

The DAS paperwork and birth certificate do NOT expire in a few weeks. The DAS paperwork is good for 1 year. The birth certificate does not expire at all.

Here is the packet 3 for k1 visas link

Lucho,

This link for packet #3 worked for me once but no longer works...also the link for packet #3 on pg 111 did the same thing, worked for a while and then stopped working. Exactly where on the website can I find packet #3?...I can only find packet #4.

Thanks for the clarification Diana.

Lo and behold. I just got home from a week of business trips and I get a nice manila envelope from the embassy in Bogota. It contains the appointment letter and date, Packet 4 instructions plus other related information regarding vaccinations and bank offices.

Is this the norm? The petitioner in the US getting copies/notices of the same information sent to the beneficiary. I don't recall reading this in the forums. Not that I'm complaining, but maybe the process has changed a bit.

Scott,

Just to guide you a little bit more, the USCIS has nothing to do with the embassy. Once they approve the petition, they send it to the NVC and they're done.

We are scheduled to fly home in a little over a week and this Domesa surprise is a hassle to say the least. The embassy said to allow at least 8-10 working days for delivery!!! My wife went with the option of picking it up at the Domesa office in Bogota. We will call next Wed. or Thurs. to see if it's ready. I did some investigating on the Domesa website and it says the normal delivery time from the embassy to their office is 7 days. It used to be two days for the beneficiary receive it in person at the embassy...if it is still two days to "DOMESA" then it will be almost as convenient as it used to be...we can only hope!!! innocent.gif

Steve...you definately have a "chance" to be in Bogota by January 31st...it will depend how quick NVC receives your petition.
If you look at our timeline you see that unfortunately it took over 5 weeks for us but lets hope that the service centers have picked up the pace at forwarding petitions.
NVC processes them very fast once they are received (usually less than 1 week) and then with the shortcut...you have a good shot!!! good.gif

I asked her to be sure that we couldn't pick up and she was told that recieving your visa in two or three days might be possible but eight days is the sure bet.

Was the answer to Lina "no" to picking up the visa in person?

Tonight i realized how much all of you guys prayers were needed!! I ate dinner and then Leidy's mom called me, so we called Leidy 3 way and started talking to her since they moved hr out of the intensive care unit...so we were talking then Leidy started telling something that i didnt know and that made me start shaking and i had to tell Leidy and her mom to hold oncause i felt my food coming up my chest, she told me that they had to use the machine that gives you an electric shock to try to bring you back when your heart stops!! I couldnt believe what i was hearing!! So basically Leidy was gone for a moment!!! This is why i say that all your prayers are SOOO appreciated!!!! Thank God she is getting better now!!!!!!! I could not imagine having to deal with something happening to her!!!!

THANK YOU GUYS!!!!

Byron...

I can't believe what I am hearing...THANK GOD THAT LEIDY IS OK...I wish for her to get healthy and I pray for Leidy and you...May God bless you both...
