Me too

There are some questions on there that you would not know if you had not looked it up. Number of Muslims in 1980 was one. Not that many compared to a lot now and hardly any 20 years earlier. You are only going to know the percentages if you look them up.

US Citizenship General DiscussionUS & UK Citizenship

Hello everybody, my friend this is my comment. Indeed, neither the U.K and the U.S. support dual citizenship and at the same time, the don't involve in that; but I think is possible. Anyway, try to read in the immigration office of the U.K, because I'm not too sure at all about the U.K; however, in the U.S, you cahn have 2 citizenships. Thanks and bye,

The UK does acknowledge dual citizenship, the US does not.

I have asked this for years and never got an answer.

I think the ways it works is that you have Parents from countries where there is no real health cover, then bad as the US is it might be better. At least you will get treated for life threatening conditions and you are no worse of for anything else.

If you come from countries who do have national health schemes than moving to the US is just not sensible.

It is much easier to renounce Permanent Residency than Citizenship.

I guess it only really matters if you are going to retire to somewhere more tax beneficial. I doubt you would have any US taxes to pay if you moved to Canada, Canada would get first bite.

(Canada is not interested in anything you say during a US Naturalisation process)

As far as I am aware you can not be Federally married, only State married.

So as she is State married then the answer is yes.

As far as IRS etc are concerned, they are not saying that you are not married just that the type of marriage does not qualify you for being married for married tax purposes.

I would also add a note.

US Citizenship General DiscussionCitizenship Oath -what does it really mean?

An LPR can petition for his/her unmarried son or daughter over 21, who are not minors.

Also, from your signature, it looks like you got some kind of dual citizenship thing BEFORE you became a USC. Did you know that at the oath ceremony, you took an oath to RENOUNCE all foreign citizenship/allegiance in order to become a USC? Here is what the oath says: "I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty, of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen".

So, after you have become a USC, if you have ever presented yourself as a citizen of another country because you USED TO be a citizen of that country, you have technically violated your oath, and thereby is no longer a considered a USC. Now, USA doesn't mind if you acquire your citizenship AFTER you have become a USC, as long as you do not renounce US citizenship in the process of getting the citizenship of that foreign country.

Now, in reality does the US govt keep an eye on the people to make sure they don't violate the oath? Not really.

EDIT: Sp.

I am going to guess English is not your first language.

You state what the oath says, that is all it says, and then suggest it means something else.

US Citizenship General DiscussionApplying for Citizenship while owing back taxes

Probably nothing to do with your post with the exception that you are not the only ones that owe back taxes, and maybe you are stuck with inventory you cannot sell with a poor economy, but have to pay huge taxes on it. And besides paying back the IRS, bet you are also paying 1% per month on the unpaid balance you owe, way higher than the interest permitted by law in other cases. But you are making the effort so should not reflect on your application.

Become a USC and take an active interest in our political system, a democracy is only as good as the citizen participants. Can't really say anything good about the natural born citizens, most interest in the super bowl than what's going on in their country. Wife saw her country go to hell with Chavez in Venezuela, and questioning why we had a president that broke over 654 laws of our US Constitution and getting away with it. It's the citizens that let ####### like this happen.

Not sure why you quoted me there. I didn't say I owe taxes. I've been filing US taxes since 1993, my first year here.

If you meant that post for the OP, probably you want to hit reply on the person your responding to next time or just hit add reply at the bottom without quoting.

So in 3 months I will be eligible to file for my citizenship. We do owe back taxes and we are paying it under a monthly installment plan approved by the irs. Would me applying for citizenship be affected by the situation explained above?
Thank u guys

As long as you have filed all of your tax returns since you became an LPR, and you have a payment plan with the IRS for what you already owe, there should not be a problem. You are doing everything legally.

Tax problems with USCIS will come from not filing taxes or not paying taxes you already owe, as evidenced by part 10(A).4 and 10(A).5 on form N400.

US Citizenship General DiscussionBirth Certificate

I need to bring my wife's birth certificate to my interview to show that she is a citizen by birth. However, she only has a photocopy of her birth certificate. will this work or do i need an original copy?

I agree with the consensus here. You need the original.

Get a replacement for the original if at all possible. In most states you can order a certified copy or copies online and have them in 1-2 weeks. These are as good as the original for legal purposes.

I would only take just a copy if I couldn't get the replacement in time, but even then you might expect that they ask you to send it later.

US Citizenship General DiscussionJury duty and Citizenship

They send jury summons out randomly. Even my brother, who's only a tourist (with a California driver license), got one while he was here on vacation, many years back.

I have received quite a few of those letters in my time. I always threw them into the trash except the last time when I marked "not a USC" and sent it back, about 8 years ago. Since then I have not received another one, so apparently something in the system is indeed working as it should.

Yeah, in Colorado once you check "not USC" you get removed from the database. My wife got removed from the database when she was an LPR. She has been a USC for 7 years now and has still not got another summons. I'm guessing they don't put you back in until you register to vote or something else that would show them you are a citizen.

US Citizenship General DiscussionJury duty and Citizenship

Hi, Well. i went today to the Courthouse and i asked them about my record and they helped me alot, But wait. she checked on the record and on 2006 it says that i was at the court for Jury Duty but there is nothing on the STATUS it says if i checked Y/N on question if i am a US citizen .. anyways she called downtown and they told her they will look for the form and its going to take them about 2 days , and they will give me call... and let me know. well and i got a copies of 2 times going on Jury Duty last one was on 2009 and it says on the STATUS (Excused Not a U.S Citizen)

but i dont understand something. she told me that i got a Credit on the first time ?? what does that mean? i told her i was just sitting there and no body called me and i had to go home .. ??

It's possible you did not check yes or no. In that case you would sit in the jury pool until you were dismissed, or if they did select you they would have asked you to complete the form, and then you would have been dismissed anyway when they saw you are not a USC.

Either way, being on the jury pool does not count as jury duty. The jury pool is where they select the jury from. Even if they give you credit for going, it doesn't sound like you were a member of the jury.

Federal tax transcripts are all that is necessary. All of the relevant information on the state tax return is pulled from the federal return anyway.

I would only submit the copy of state return if there was something relevant on it that wasn't on the federal return, but off the top of my head, I cant think of anything.

US Citizenship General DiscussionTriple Ties/Citizenships...

As far as Canada goes, they do officially recognize dual citizenship, so you would have no problems there...
As for as America goes, when one says the oath, one technically renounce all loyalities to other countries....However it's more of a formality than a legality, as one cannot lose American citizenship just because they have citizenship of another country....
As for any other country goes, one would have to look up the specific rules for that. Some countries allow it..some don't...

Ant

If the first country of citizenship recognizes verbal renounciation of citizenship then you can lose the first citizenship when taking the verbal oath for US citizenship. Canadian citizenship (and many other countries) can only be renounced in writing.

I wouldn't say it's a formality. When you take the oath, the US recognizes you now as a US citizen. How your former country (or countries) recognize you depends on their laws, not on US laws. Many countries do recognize verbal renounciation so one does have to take this into consideration.

It depends on the birth year of the applicant. Because I was born in 1978 different rules would apply to me.

Correct (if you were born "in wedlock"). If you were born prior to 1986 to US citizen mother married to non US citizen father, the requirement is 10 years of residence, 2 after the age of 14.

The requirements are different if the US citizen mother and non US citizen father were not married at the time of birth.

US Citizenship General DiscussionAbout I-551

An I-551 nay be a green card, a form, or a stamp in your current valid foreign passport, the later is required to keep you here legally in the event you lose your green card or if you experience long delays when the USCIS is processing your conditional or ten year card. I-551 in any form shows that you are here legally as a lawful permanent resident, provided the expiration date hasn't been met yet.

We came very close to getting an I-551 stamp in my wife's current valid foreign passport due to long delays in processing our I-751, but if you don't have a passport, can also apply for an I-94 with an infopass appointment by bringing in two passport type photos of yourself.

USCIS doesn't tell you this stuff if they are experiencing long delays, we had to learn this stuff on our own, this board was a big help in this matter. Its up to you to keep yourself legal.

Thank you very much for the info. appreciate it

I had the flashcards and they were the best way for me to study. I could mix them up and I could put them in different piles and so on. They worked great. If you have a basic knowledge of American history, politics and geography, you don't have to study too much. There were only a few answers I actually had to memorize. It's fairly easy to do. I think taking a class is a great idea if you have problems with the English language. Just to practice it, especially in context with the interview and all the key words used there.

Hi,

So its been almost a month since my interview and I was getting anxious because I hadn't received my oath letter yet when this morning at 8:00am I actually received a telephone call from my local immigration office to schedule my oath ceremony for this coming tuesday 8th at 2pm. They said that they had to call because if they sent a letter I wouldn't receive it in time. I've never been called by them before so was a little worried when she introduced herself as being from the immigration office.

Would someone please update me on the list?

US Citizenship General DiscussionN-400 ... April 2009 Applicants, Post your dates here!
Hi All,

I had my interview yesterday. It went great and my IO was the nicest one I've met so far.

The questions asked were...

1. If the President can no longer serve who is next in line?
2. During the Cold war what was the main concern?
3. What is one right from the first ammendment?
4. Who is in charge of the executive branch?

And I can't remember the other two. I answered them all correctly so she stopped at 6.

Make sure that you carefully review all the your personal information that they will use for your Naturalization Certificate. They had my telephone # and my former nationality incorrect - they said I was from Ukraine - not United Kingdom. If I had missed that, she said they would have charged me $300 to reprint the certificate with the correct information.

Also, I had been sent a yellow letter asking to supply last 3 years of tax returns (which I had already sent in) but she didn't ask me for them. Instead she asked me fro proof that my husband and I had been living together since I filed for removal of conditions. Luckily before I left the house I had grabbed a few bills, letters, cards etc addressed to both of us so she was very happy with that.

The whole thing took about 20 minutes. Then she said that she didn't know when my Oath ceremony would be - I just have to wait for a letter in the mail. Hopefully it will be soon...

Journey is almost over...
