CanadaTax Question
I was a student last year in the us...I didn't work in Canada or the US....Do I need to file taxes as I had no income? I thought I didn't but now I want to double check.
Also Since were in the AOS process I have basically no id in my married name yet...is there any place in Canada I need to contact about the name change? I have closed my bank account , and I never got my actual license there.

Its hard when you first move you miss friends and family and the familiar places. If it wasn't for the fact that my DH is my best friend I would feel so alone. You learn to adjust. So don't worry it gets better!

Oh and now that I'm pregnant I'm really wanting some poutine and theres none sad.gif

talk to a credit counselor. Many organizations offer counseling for free-check your yellowpages and you'll find plenty. Even if they can't directly help since your credit issues are in Canada, they should be able to give you good advice and help you figure out how to manage money. They may even be able to put you in contact with a good credit agency in Canada to help you work out payments. Your creditors will probably be willing to work with you because they lose too if you file for bankruptcy-not as much as you-especially if you show good faith turning your finical life around

Just be careful with those MoFos. Not all credit counseling agencies are legit. I can imagine that being in collections is uncomfortable and even creepy as helll; but do not avoid them. Call your creditors (NOT the collection agencies) and explain the situation- you will be surprised at how willing they are to negotiate with someone who is willing to pay, even if little. 5 bucks is 5 bucks. Take a second job: is that an option? Sell some stuff on e-bay?

Can't get a first job thats the issue we just filed AOS...I'm pregnant and we figure by the time my EAD goes through I'll be 7 months along...so I don't know if anyone will hire me when I'm 7 mths or if it will be worth it.......I don't want to go bankrupt and living in the US I don't think I can.....I feel so silly b/c I have nothing to show for my debt it was all accumulated in flights and the rest was paid back I should have done it differently but I didn't and it was a mistake.....the stupid things you do when you fall in love....hmmm

CanadaBankruptcy seems to be the only option...
I'm already in collections....I have no way of paying right now....I spoke to a Canadian bankruptcy lawyer sent him my info online and he said that when I come back to Canada to file....I dont plan on going back for an extended period of time anytime soon
I was told my him not to negotiate on the phone and since I have nothing to negotiate with it doesn't make much difference.....god the stress of this all if killing me....I just feel like I screwed myself over.....

CanadaBankruptcy seems to be the only option...
I've gathered piles of debt over basic stupidity that since I don't have a Job I can't pay back right now...my DH (who has nothing to do with any of it) can't help pay it back he doesn't make enough.....does anyone know of a way to file Canadian bankruptcy from the us......I just don't know what to do....I changed my address to the us when I moved for school in 2007 and me and DH rent a room in the basement of the Inlaws ....and now collections have called my in laws house number instead of mine....I don't want the inlaws to know about my debt.....its so humiliating....plus I don't live at the inlaws I live in the basement apartment......I've tried to firgureout ways to start paying my debt back but now that I have a baby on the way it just seems impossible.....if anybody has any advice I'd love to here it !
Thanks

If i do that do I have to refile next year with the Canadian government? My husband will obviously be claiming me next year and the baby since I won't be working.

I apologize if I missed this somewhere but can anyone tell me - are you assigned a consulate based on your region or some other way? My husband is in Alberta and so I was just wondering if we'll end up through Montreal or Vancouver.

CanadaDS-230 Part II
I'm getting mixed information thru my search for this answer so I thought I'd ask.

I'm going thru the CR1 process for my spouse in Canada. For the DS-230, specifically with regard to Canada, do we fill out Part II and mail it in unsigned, or do we bring an unsigned Part II to the interview?

I'm seeing people doing either or and in some cases both. Anyone recent that knows the answer?

Thanks!!

CanadaSome questions about DS-230
I have a question as well...my dear hubby signed and dated the DS-230 before he sent it to me. Though I told him to just sign it and send it to me, I guess he doesn't do so well when instructions aren't in writing. :P Anyhow. Does anyone think it's a problem that by the time I actually have to send it in, it would be backdated? Or should I have him try again? Thanks!!
CoMellyFemaleCanada2007-05-10 19:08:00
CanadaJust curious
My hubby and I looked at both sides as well. I've worked for state govenrment for 7 years - love my current job as a financial reporting analyst - I know...nerd. ^_^ He's a paramedic. Since I have a stronger connection to my employer and my job, and we figured I really couldn't do what I do here up there in Canada, we decided to be in the States for the time being (maybe we'll retire in Canada). All he has to do is sit for two exams (national and then state) for his paramedic license.

CanadaStaff shortage in Montreal

This probably is a big postive for anyone waiting on an interview to Montreal. Frees up some staff for immigrant inverviews and k visas. Plus there are a number of cases that seem to be getting transferred to Vancouver. Hopefully, the transfer of cases to Vancouver doesn't start backing them up.

That's kind of what I was hoping for everyone waiting for their interview in Montreal. Perhaps they're reallocating staff to deal with the backlog. One can only hope.

Okay, I maybe answered my own question...sorry about that! I'm thinking it's non-immigrant visas only.

CanadaStaff shortage in Montreal
This was from the U.S. Consulate in Montreal web site (http://montreal.usco...&document=index). Does anyone know, or have any thoughts about, whether this might include those sent on by NVC? Or am I just reading too much into this? I know it says, 'this includes...' but I took that to mean ALL visas which includes those listed? So confused!!

"The U.S. Consulate General in Montreal will be experiencing an extended staff shortage this summer and fall. Therefore, as of July 9, 2007, we will not be accepting visa applications from persons residing in the U.S. This includes persons wishing to obtain or renew their work visas (H and L visas), student visas (F and M visas) or exchange visitor visas (J visas). As of July 9, 2007, the U.S. Consulate General in Montreal will only accept visa applications from people residing in Canada. This moratorium will continue for the foreseeable future. Thank you for your understanding."

CanadaRandom CR1 Questions
Just thought of one more thing we did that might be fairly simple for you as well. We both added each other as 'spouse' and/or beneficiary in our work stuff (e.g., health insurance, retirement, life insurance, etc.) and provided copies of that stuff as well. Obviously we don't have coverage on each other's health insurance since we're not in the same country, but, in my case, I added my husband to my information and than just declined coverage, but he still shows up on my work health stuff as my spouse. You may want to look into something like that if you're wanting something simple to do.

CanadaRandom CR1 Questions

So I'm still on my fact finding mission so I have all my ducks in a row when it comes time to file for my CR1 so just a few random questions to those who have filed for the same:

1. What did you use to prove a family relationship?
I am getting some friends as well as family to write affidavits on our behalf. Basically the ones who will be at our wedding ceremony. Other than that I'm at a loss since we don't own or lease property together (kinda confusing since I'm not allowed to live there till they let me????? Though I could get him to put me on his house as soon we're married but I thought this might cause problems on my weekend trips over there since I would 'technically' own a residence in the US where I'm not yet 'legally' allowed to live.) and we don't share a bank account in either country since it's a royal pain in the behind to do so.

2. When it says copies do they mean just plain ole straight from the photocopier copies? Or do they mean certified copies (which to me means signed copies by a lawyer or notary stating that the original was seen by them and that the copy conforms to the original)?

Thanks in advance :)

Oh and on the form it asks last address at which we lived together. We've never lived together. Is that gonna be a problem???

jynxNdragnfly,

I filed in February and so was required to send the proof of relationship stuff (the I-130 had been revised in January). I sent copies of tickets stubs and flight itineraries, copies of the insides of wedding congrats cards that people had sent, copies of phone bills showing us talking constantly!, copies of a joint bank account, and copies of my car title that I had added him to.

I was able to add him to my plain old bank account here in the states without him having a SSN by giving the bank a signed copy of an IRS form W-8BEN which is 'Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding'. They had no problem taking that in lieu of a SSN or tax identification number. Also, since I had my title for my car, I just took it in and had it retitled with his name on it. They didn't need anything but my title and my drivers license, though that may vary from state to state.

I also sent some pictures, but we were limited there since we haven't had that many visits.

Probably some of this was overkill, but I just wanted to be sure! I would say the affidavits are definitely a great idea.

Plain photo copies is all I sent. As for the last address lived together on the I-130, I put 'None' and didn't have any problems.

Hopefully this will give you some ideas. Good luck!

CanadaPolice Certificate question
I don't understand the previously resided either. He's only lived in Canada and if it's Canada wide it just doesn't make sense to me that a National search wasn't enough. I think (since I'm hoping the DS230 packet will get here this week) that I'm just going to take my chances and send it in as is.

At least if we get an RFE for a local one, he can run and get one and then just Global Express it to NVC. Luckily, since he's a paramedic and worked in the last city he was in, he knows the RCMP guys and whenever he's needed a police certificate (for other jobs) he's gotten it immediately.

We'll see! Thanks Susan.

CanadaPolice Certificate question
My hubby got a police certificate from the Calgary Police Service that states "A search based on the above names and birthdate has not disclosed a record of criminal convictions in Canada's National Repository for criminal records."

But, there is also this stamped note in red at the top of the page...

"Please Note: The CPS Security Clearance Unit recommends a local police check be conducted where this applicant previously resided."

Has anyone seen this on their certificate? Do you think this certificate is sufficient since it is a search in the 'National Repository' or do I need him to get another local one for his previous city?

CanadaA Bad Omen?
Don't know if this is at all helpful/useful to anyone, but my hubby just phoned the Calgary doctor and they told him all they need is the case number - didn't matter if he had a letter from Packet IV or not. They went ahead and scheduled him in. The nurse told him she had seen others who were getting really short notice and barely getting the medical in before the interview so they had no problem doing them early. Also, they confirmed with him that it is good for a year.

Congrats to everyone who has been scheduled for an interview thus far!!

And, add me to the list. I just got this e-mail response:

Please be advised that an appointment has been scheduled for the applicant on 12/06/2007 at 8:00. The agent of choice will receive further instructions shortly.

I was at work this morning when I read the e-mail, and I screamed. Everyone came running to see what was going on. kicking.gif

CanadaCR1 MTL Waiting to Interview
Hey All.

Haven't logged in for quite some time - was trying to let the time pass without as little thought as possible to how frustrating the wait is!! Thanks for those that have been keeping the table up to date in my absence!

However, I was starting to get freaked out about people's short notice for the medical so I came to get some info. For those in Calgary, I found the web site for the doctor - I'm sure it's been posted elsewhere too, but I just wanted to share in case anyone hadn't seen it and wanted to. It has the medical info nicely spelled out.

http://www.hummingbi...l/practice.html

I think we're going to go ahead and get it over with. Anyone done theirs recently?
