CanadaGetting US visa?

First, there is one fairly common work based visa that does not require you to be a rocket scientist. Nursing. Nurses are in very short supply and a registered nurse has a very good chance of getting a work based green card compared to many other professions. I have to admit I don't know the process very well, but I know that nurses are in short supply, and that in the city in California I lived in when I was on J-1, the vast majority of nurses were registered nurses from the Philippines. Just a suggestion if she's willing to get a nursing degree.

Nursing is NOT a good route.

If she wants to be a teacher, the only way she'll get a work based green card is if she's a professor with a phd.

A bit of an exaggeration but I see where you are coming from.

A student visa may not be so far fetched. You don't need to prove it's an education you can't get in Canada. All you need is an acceptance letter from a legitimate US educational institution. Education is expensive, sure, but if she stats a bachelors program you'll have 4 - 5 (expensive) years of being together. She's allowed to work for up to 20 hours a week if the job is on campus. She may not work of campus.

After her graduation she'll be eligible for OPT, a one year work permit allowing her to work in a job related to her major.

OPT is an excellent opportunity to investigate possibilities for an H-1b work visa, as many employers may be willing to sponsor OPT employees for an H-1b.

I think the expensive bit may be the issue.

By that time, DOMA may be gone.

Probably not, but that is always debatable.

CanadaCanadian married to American; Near Daily border crossing.
They do not have to acquire citizenship if they do not want to, they do need to decide which Country they want to live in.

Dual Citizenship would of course allow this behavour.

Sounds like he needs to decide where he wants to live. And go from there.

The only real scenario that works is Dual Citizenship, but that will take time.

More likely a form he has to fill in, and notarise,

Like I say never assume its logical.

CanadaHas anyone had any experience with renouncing Canadian Citizenship?

No more legal than people in some States being asked for their non US Drivers License.

What I remember was very similar to the naturalisation, did not involve your home country at all.

The thread I remember was that they wanted him to renounce to the US Gov and handover his passport.

Do not assume that what they ask for is logical.

That was it it, you just need to renounce your citizenship to the US Gov, has absolutely no impact on your Canadian or any other Citizenship.

But of it makes them happy, why not.

I remember seeing a UK case and there they wanted him to hand over his passport, which of course he can replace.

CanadaOptions, if any, available to help bring extended family members to US

Might be worth checking the costs for a Canadian Boarding School and a US School. Are there Boarding schools close to where they currently live?

F1 Student Visa would also be my though. You can discuss this with the international admissions officer of whichever would be the appropriate school.

I think they can attend Public High School in the US for a year, how much it would costs etc would need to be ascertained, doubt if many are familiar with this.

Assuming she does not need to leave for the up to 90 days it will take to get AP, best bet would be to file both.

CanadaWhat do you guys do for health insurance?

You would be eligible for a tax credit through Obamacare.

Normally you would get Medicaid, but as I understand it you need to be a LPR for 5 years and then there is still the I 864 issue.

CanadaWhat do you guys do for health insurance?

My husband got myself and our newborn baby private insurance...IT's called healthplus, and it's really great! We've used it for my daughters' 2 month appointment, and my gynecologist appointment and both were FREE like back home! We were in SAMS club and thats where we signed up for it!

Sounds like Medicaid administered by Healthplus?

CanadaWhat did you do for health insurence?

Nobody is fully covered, wherever they buy Insurance.

Insurance is a very heavily regulated industry, to sell qualified Insurance the Company needs to be registered and regulated in the State he is Resident in.

BoilerMaleWales2014-03-29 15:24:00
CanadaWhat did you do for health insurence?

Happy I found this thread. I'm kind of in the same situation. My husband's insurance comes from Germany (I'm not too clear on the exact details, but his parents took care of it for him 5 years ago and he's been covered under that ever since). I highly doubt I could be added under the same policy (although we'll try). I'll be starting work/school a little bit after I move to the US, but I don't know what to do in the meantime.. and I really don't understand how Obamacare works tbh :P Any suggestions?

Unlikely any German Insurance would meet Obamacare requirements.
