CanadaIf you only knew then, what you know now...
Looking back on things so far I would have to say that I'm happy with how things turned out and don't think I would have done it any other way.

Although our wait for our K1 Visa was almost a year, it gave me the opportunity to spend time with my family and friends during the wait.

I really couldn't be more happy then how things have turned out so far.

Maybe on thing that I would have changed is renting a bigger car for all my stuff! he he he....we couldn't fit all my stuff the first time so hopefully when I get my AP I'll be able to get the rest of my things and bring them down. happy.gif

CanadaOfficial Name Change
I have my Marriage Certificate with me and took the initiative to change my bank info and SSN to my married name. Couldn't change the Driver's license yet because they said they need to see my resident card or my passport with my married name, so I'm waiting for that to come in before I can make the change. Health Insurance was done by my husband who presented my married name and just showed the Marriage Certificate.

Canadatransporting a dog via air or something
how big is your dog? we travel back and forth between Canada and U.S with our dog...but he's only 7 lbs and fits in a Sherpa carrier that goes under the seat infront of us....

If your dog is bigger and can only go in cargo then your options are limited....have you tried looking at other U.S carriers?

CanadaMaternity leave Canada vs. USA
Makes me wonder if a country is so career driven then what about the future in having generations to keep the country going? I know for me, my career for the longest time was the focal point...more and more of my female friends don't have kids until later in life or even elect not to have kids....

Wish there was something we could do...

There doesn't seem to be much push or drive from Mother's in the U.S to want to change the current Maternity Leave.....

My husband and I were talking over the weekend about this and strongly feel that our future family is more important than adhering to a restricted short term Maternity Leave....I can't imagine if I were left with someone else to look after me when I was an infant. Not that I have been a Mother yet but I can imagine that it would be very hard for a mother to leave her child at such a young age....perhaps even contributing to depression???? or Post partum depression?

It's probably very hard to concentrate as a working Mom knowing that your newborn is with someone else....

Yes I believe so.

Wow...that just seems strange to me because I don't think I've ever seen young infants like that left to Day Cares......this is definitely a big adjustment when the day comes when we have kids....

Any VJ Moms here who came from Canada to the U.S. and took Mat leave? I'm interested to hear what you thought of things...

One of the reasons my USC husband came over here when we got married is maternity benefits- I was off work before the birth for 9 weeks on full pay, then get 26 weeks fully paid maternity leave and another 16 weeks unpaid if I want it.

Are you in Switzerland?

That's a nice Maternity Leave....

I read somewhere along the lines that in Sweden they have the best Maternity Leave....1 year at 100%!!! plus mandatory 3 weeks prior to due date you must take off...paternal leave that's paid....they are very supportive of people having time to recoup and all about families....

I will definitely miss the Maternity Leave part of Canada.....I don't know what will happen when the day comes but it seems very soon to leave your little one with someone when they are only a few months old....

So my friend back home is about to go on Maternity leave and we were talking about how nice it is to have the 12 month time period to heal as well as being with your newborn.

From what I have found on the U.S. side is that Maternity leave is typically 12 weeks (3 months) unpaid leave. Do I have this right?

Seems a little daunting compared to what's back home....

Met my husband 9 years ago through work....we stayed as friends even though I got laid off.....got re-hired back into the same company and we started dating 3 years ago. Funny thing is that during our friendship he was in a long term relationship that didn't work out and I was previously engaged which didn't work out either.

We did not and have not advertised our relationship at work.

Funny thing is that I had a rule on not dating people at work. He was my exception! wink.gif

CanadaSSN question
Yep same here as Krikit...they needed a SSN for pretty much everything...bank account, doctor's office, etc. That's not only your SSN but I find that in the U.S. that's pretty much your identity. You're not a name..you're a number here..your SSN. he he he wink.gif
T.O_2_FLFemaleCanada2008-07-09 16:03:00
CanadaSSN question
ditto here...

Applied for my SSN 1 week after arrival into the U.S and took:

-my passport with I94 and K1 Visa
-mail with my mailing address in the U.S
-driver's license

After I got married, I went back to the SSN office with my marriage certificate to change my last name. They told me to come back again when I get my Resident status adjusted.
T.O_2_FLFemaleCanada2008-07-09 10:23:00
CanadaChanging your name
we weren't going to change my last name initially to my husband's but we read some articles online and found that border will sometimes give you a hard time if you don't have the same last name as your children when travelling, etc. which would be a pain since their Grandparents would be up in Canada and there might be times I would bring them up without my husband...so to prepare for the future we decided to change my last name to his.

congrats! Keep your eye on it via Canada Post's website...they initially delivered mine to the wrong address and had someone sign for it too! wink.gif

So yesterday while walking out to the pool, I thought there was only two steps and there was three and I fell down and twisted my ankle pretty bad.

I am hobbling around and its pretty embarrassing. crying.gif

Lucky I have insurance but I don't think a hospital is going to do anything about a twisted ankle. I'll just go get a tensor bandage today and some more ibuprofen.

I sprained my ankle a year and a half ago back in Toronto.....best thing to make it heal quickly is keep it wrapped in a tensor (to prevent fluid build up = swelling) as much as possible and also stay off your feet if you can! I did all those things and it healed in a couple of weeks! Also really important to do some ankle exercises too or else you may loose some mobility later on.....the key is staying off your feet.

I learned all this from my Mom who is a RN and the ER room told me the exact same thing.....good luck!

I think I've figured out the co-pay thing, but what I don't understand is how one knows ahead of time if treatment will be covered or not? Case in point, I saw my GP for a sore neck. SHE sent me to physio (3 visits), I did not ask to go. That didn't work, so the physiotherapist reported back to my GP, who then (GP) sent me to the orthopedic dr. Had xrays and determined that I have DDD. Orthopedic dr sent me for a round of traction therapy. OK, so in all of this, I had to pay the co-pays only. Then, a couple of months later, I get a bill from the physio saying that I had to pay for all of it! (approx $400 for 3 - 10 minute visits). Everything else was covered, but not the physio which my GP sent me to.

So, how do you know if something that your GP refers you to will be covered or not? I would have thought that since the GP's office has my insurance info, they ought to have known whether physio would be covered..... and at least told me "This might not be covered by your insurance", and given me the option to proceed or decline. At least this was just my neck, but I can't imagine if it were something more serious, where you really don't have time to weigh the options..... if your Dr says "You need to go for a CT Scan", then I'd probably think that I ought to go!! What does everyone else do? Do you tell your Dr "thanks for the suggestion.... I'll think about it and get back to you" and then call your insurance to find out if it will be covered? I guess coming from Canada, where everything is pretty much covered unless you're told otherwise, I am just used to assuming any referred treatment is covered.

What do YOU do to avoid costly, unexpected bills?

Exactly.....my GP suggested that I got to an Allergist but my husband told me to check and see if we were covered before making the appt. I told my GP that and she was fine with that. I think that it's not a big deal to tell them that because they understand that everyone's insurance coverage is different.

I had Massage Therapy covered when I was in Canada so I asked my GP about that and she told me to check my insurance first and that if I'm covered she would write me a prescription for it. Or if I wasn't covered and still wanted to see one that she would write one as well.

I have gotten into the habit of checking what our benefits cover before making any medical related appts (granted unless it was life threatening).

CanadaStruggling with a sense of identity.
I've lived in Toronto all my life and decided that I would move down to Florida to live with my husband after getting married. We live right by Cocoa Beach.

This has been a big adjustment for me since I am use to the city lifestyle and where we are is pretty much retired folk and beach. Oh yea and tourists. Anything metropolitan would be pretty much us driving to Orlando (about an hour) or down south to West Palm or even Miami (4 hours).

I can say that I look at the positives of why I'm down here....weather is really secondary despite all the immigration things we had to go through. I am still getting use to the killer humidity down here and the lifestyle change. For a girl who is use to walking to the Eaton Centre in Toronto and using the subway or taxi...I am now a slave of the automobile. In addition to the humidity, I suffer from really bad allergic reactions from the bug bites (infamous no-see-ums) so for me to go out and do any type of yard work or activity requires a healthy dose of deet all over.

We don't plan on making Cocoa Beach our forever home....but for now, it is where we are.....as long as we're together. Doesn't mean we don't have an eye open wink.gif

CanadaHow did you start to build your new credit rating?
I opened up a Sak's card before moving down here to the U.S during one of my visits (showed them my CDN Visa card and passport).

In addition, I had a CDN Amex card where when I moved down here I just opened a U.S Amex card. They gave me an U.S Amex card based on my CDN credit/Amex card. It's called Global Transfer.

Other than that I haven't applied for any other cards since I got a pretty decent credit limit with the Amex.

Thank you everyone! We tried to skimp and budget on everything else but the photography since we wanted awesome photos as those would hopefully last us a lifetime. We had debated over videography and photography for our wedding. Final consensus was that we would scrape the video and just get the best photographer that we could afford. I'm so glad we did it. I was apprehensive at first but after seeing her work it was well worth it.

Krikit - Gina is really wonderful and accomodating too incase you decide to use her services.
