US Citizenship General Discussionhow do they determine 3 years for naturalization
If these duplicate posts inconvenience you - you can always simply not bother to read and/or answer them - especially as there are many willing to provide an answer without berating or lecturing the O/P.

US Citizenship General DiscussionReally confused about "3 year" requirement
It's 3 years from whatever date he became a PR. So if he became a PR in 08/09, then it's 08/2012. You can send in the application 90 days prior to whatever the date is in 08/2012.

US Citizenship General DiscussionReally confused about "3 year" requirement
What Jesti said. Look at the date on the green card. It is 3 years from the date that he first became a PR, provided he has been married to the same USC for those 3 years. You can submit the application 90 days prior to that date.

IE: My PR status began May 14,2007, therefore I am eligible as of May 14, 2010 and can apply 90 days before that date.

CanadaPassport photos "too old"???
Yep all Canadian passport photos are dated and stamped by the phot taker. I was so surprised how they do it here in the US. Nothing to it.

CanadaPassports
Mine came back to me within a couple weeks. I think they are really good at sending them out on time. I don't think you will need your passport for a bit, so it's probably safe to mail in for it.

Canada6 months on B2 staus.
I really don't think you have anything at all to worry about. As long as you didn't stay past a departure date on an I-94 or after you were told to leave the US,, you should be fine.

CanadaPolice Certificate (Ont) and Med Exam
Yes, you need to have the exam and send it in with your I-145. If you don't they will ask for it and it'll delay your application until it is sent in.

CanadaEI questions
I bank with Scotia Bank (and still have investments with them that are locked in so can't close my account) and they are affiliated with Bank of America here in the US. I don't get ANY service charges for withdrawing money from my scotia account as long as I use a BOA ATM. Also, I've cashed Canadian cheques at Bank of America, they don't charge me any fees to convert the funds and the exchange rate is fair. So to anyone using a Canadian bank card here in the US, check and see if they have an affiliate bank in the US where you won't be charged to w/d funds.

CanadaPolitics in the US
There are some interesting differences in many other ways. Religion seems so very intertwined with politics in the US. Something you don't see a whole lot of in Canada. I really wonder if religion to many of these politicos is just another tool to get a vote.
I do enjoy some of the political debate and there are some great people who are very well informed that share a lot of information - it is just as that as Kathryn says, it's so black and white.

CanadaPolitics in the US
The longer I am here, the more I find myself becoming less and less tolerant of some of the political attitudes that I encounter, both online and out and about.
Is it just me or does political affiliation in Canada affect people much less concerning everyday issues, thoughts and opinions?

Canadaso frustrated....
Ok, that sounds better. I took it to mean it was MAILED on the 29th. Things can get to Austrailia from Canada faster than in 2 weeks, so it sounded wrong.

Hopefully, you will get your info soon and once the holidays are over, things will move quickly.

Canadagot visa now what
From what I have read in the AOS forum, someone on a K-1 visa can get a SSN right away (though it may take a few weeks for their information to get into the SS coumputer). You need to file I-485 after you are married. You can file the I765, it's probably a good idea if you would like to work in the near future. Sometimes the greencard is delayed.

Canadatax returns
I ordered a copy of our 2005 tax transcript over the IRS telephone system using information from out 2005 tax return. I don't know if that is what you will need for your petition, but we used it with no problems for my AOS.

CanadaCanadian Passport and Name Change...
If you don't want to go to the consulate, you can mail off your passport, $12.00 and some other things right to passport canada and they can add in the married name for you.

CanadaCanadian Passport and Name Change...
If you want a whole new passport (just in married name), you need to apply through passport Canada. If there is no consulate near you, you can mail in your passport and marriage certificate to passport canada (with $12.00) and they will add in your married name.

I go this from the Canadian Consulate in boston. if there is a consulate near you, you can go there to amend your passport, rather than getting a new one.

Subject: Response - Canadian Consulate

Dear Correspondent,
Your e-mail (copied below) was forwarded to me for response.

If your current, valid, passport was issued in your maiden name BEFORE the date of your marriage AND you have a document that shows you are using the married name (ex. Social Security Card, driving license, green card, work authorization, health insurance card, etc.), you can apply at the Consulate in Boston to have your married name added to your passport. It is a relatively simple procedure, requiring an appointment with me, US$ 11 cash, your marriage certificate, and the document showing you are using your married name. The process takes about 40 minutes, and an observation will be added into the back of your passport showing your married name.

If your passport was issued in your maiden name AFTER your date of marriage, there is no way to add a married name to your passport. Unfortunately, your only option is to apply for a whole new Canadian passport, this time in your married name. In order to do that, you will have to show some proof that you are using a married name, such as a driving license. For Canadians in the US, this can be a bit of a "Catch-22" as the US often won't issue documents except for based on what name is in the passport. I regret to inform you that Passport Canada will not bend on this. They will not be the first organization to provide documentation for you in a married name.

Please let me know in a return e-mail if you would like an appointment.

I just received my 2006 tax package from Rev Canada today (here at my Boston address).
I usually e-file though, so I don't use it.

CanadaIdeas on what to do next?
You could do a credit report and see if it has been used. That or ask ss for a printout of the social security contributions (that'd show if someone else was declaring income on it).

CanadaObtaining Court Record for AOS
Thank you for your help!

I didn't enter the US on a K-1 visa (or any visa), so I didn't require these records. I'll give the courthouse a call (I'm hoping that they keep these records of dropped cases for a while). I still can't figure out if I need a police rport or not, so I'll try to get that too. We live just NW of Boston. I did like the snow, til the next day when it became as hard as a rock. :)

CanadaObtaining Court Record for AOS
Has anyone had to do this? I was charged once over 10 years ago in Ontario and the charges were dropped when I went to court. Do I just contact the courthouse and request the record? Do they even keep these records? I'm sure I never received anything at the time.

CanadaMy Experience changing my Drivers License today..
I had to call social security today and the person I spoke with asked me if I spoke French (because I was from Canada, and probably also because I come from Saut Ste. Marie (French name)). It was pretty cool. He actually seemed to know more about Canada and Canadian french than most did.

CanadaHow much did you bring with you?
It was no problem bringing over the cat. I was not asked one question about the cat or to see his vaccination records. They were more concerned about seeing my custody order for my son.

I brought almost all my clothes, my dining room table, TV, books, papers, mementos, coffee table set (was a really nice one, some lamps that I loved, this nice bench that opens up and stores things. Other various small items, including some nice glassware. The rest I sold, gave away of threw out, simply because we didnt have room for it here.

Oh I also brought my beautiful pet cat. Sorry you didn't get to Ant.
