Have you actually gone to your county clerk's office to get the marriage license? Online it says that you need an SSN for some states, but I know for PA, even though they ask for an SSN, if you call and explain that your fiance is here on a K1 they will waive that requirement.

Zee,

Thanks for the extra push. I had been calling and getting this really evil woman. She put me on hold twice and never came back. Today, after I read your post I mustered up some courage and called again, hoping I would get someone who would be nice. Thank God. The woman I talked to told us we can come and apply for the marriage license with just Samuels passport and visa. Ok...so now we do not have to wait for the SSN#. At least we can get started on that.

Thanks again!

Here is a link to the website in case anyone from Cleveland ever needs it.

Good morning all...I read of all your advice. Here is some info that I found out.

I called USCIS and they said that with the K-1 Fiance' visa, Samuel will not have to repeat his medical exam. The representative I talked to asked for the doctors name, and telephone number that was giving out incorrect information. Hopefully they can clarify the procedures with them.

I called the Ohio BMV...again some major inconsistencies. We were told he will need the SSN#, passport, marriage certificate and the I-797 Notice of Action proving that we have filed for AOS and it is in process.

I noticed that some of the New York couples are married already. (Bassie & Zainab) Congrats!!!!!! Here in Cleveland they want him to have a SSN# before we can apply for the marriage license. Cleveland Sucks!!!

This part is of the process sure tests your patience!

You guys be good and thanks!

Is he working now ? I may have misunderstood you.............he needs to wait for the EAD to work. If it expires he can renew it.
Someone correct me if I am wrong.

He had an interview yesterday and the employer wants to hire him. But the employer did not know if he would have to stop working or not after the EAD expires (he got the stamp at JFK). I was just trying to make sure I am versed on the topic in case the employer really does not know. I do not want any trouble when we go for the AOS interview. I also did not want to pay $300 plus dollars for a permit only to have to pay again when we adjust our status.

Yes the networking is always wonderful to watch as it unfolds.

Too cold ? Really hot here in IL.
Oh Yes Omoba! We live in Cleveland by the lake, so our days can be hot, but the nights are generally cool.
The CS is INCORRECT ..........he does not need a medical, unless it has expired, it is good for one year. There are no CS to do the medicals in the beneficiaries country, only panel physicians.
He needs to have the vaccination worksheet transfered by a CS , some get approved without it but you may get a RFE so I recommend it.

This CS will do it per fax or mail for $ 10.

Africa: Sub-SaharanUpdate & Questions
Hey VJer's,

I MISS VISA JOURNEY!!!! All is well with Samuel and I. Outside of the normal frustrations of the weather (too cold), waiting for SSN, and not being able to work, Samuel is adjusting well. Before I get to why I got on here today, I have to tell this story. I love the way Ghanaians have a serious network. On July 4th I must have had 20 Ghanaians at our home! In actuality he only knew one guy, but when Abu called two friends, and they called two friends, and so on, and so on. Before you know it it was A Ghanaian Family Reunion! The feeling was wonderful, and I loved watching him interact with his friends.

Since his arrival I have not had a lot to time to get on the website. However, today I had to. We are looking ahead to the AOS process and I just called a few civil surgeons regarding the exam and one doctor really just pissed me off. So of course I had to jump on here quickly and get some advice.

1. The USCIS website and instructions clearly state that if you entered on a K-1 fiance' visa you do not have to have another medical. One doctor I talked to insisted that a medical has to be done again, if the medical in Ghana was NOT done by a civil surgeon in Ghana. Is she correct?

2. Samuel is very anxious to get his drivers license. Once he has his SSN can he get his drivers license or will he have to wait until he is a permanent resident?

3. He has an opportunity to work. However he is afraid that once the EAD expires that he will have to quit. Can he continue to work while the application for AOS is pending or will he need to quit?

Ok, well I guess I should get back to work. I will wait for any responses or advice. You know I appreciate it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. He did mention that he wants to become a nurse. So I did find some free CNA classes that last three weeks. I will suggest it to him. I think it would be good for him to get up and feel productive instead of just watching CNN and reading about Ghana on the internet. Which I am sure just adds to him being homesick. He has already started taking walks around the neighborhood, going to the library and the neighborhood parks. But we live in a suburb of Cleveland where most of the community is retired...lol...so that is not much fun. Thanks again guys. I am going to check on those classes first thing Monday morning.

They often don't know the documents, but if they have you waiting for homeland security it might take a minute.

Sorry for the bad new.....

Its ok. I guess I thought this process would ease up a bit once Samuel arrived. Silly me right. We talked to a rep at the SS office and as I said before DHS is holding things up. It could be another 2 weeks she said. We were under the impression that we needed the number in order to get married. But someone suggested I call the court where we get the marriage license and they told us just to come in with the letter that he applied. So...... the frustrustions although still there have lessened.

Hey yall,

I need suggestions. What did you guys do to help combat your SO's frustrations and boredom while they are waiting to work? Samuel is so calm, but I think it is getting to him. We went to the social security office and was told that they are waiting for the Dept. of Homeland Security to verfiy documents and then they will issue the SSN#. Can I call DHS to find out what is the hold up?

I was looking forward to going to the Ghanafest, but I think I should let him go alone to be with friends. Maybe that will help with the boredom. unsure.gif

Questions & Answers:
Changes to the Tuberculosis and Vaccination Requirements Required for Adjustment of Status

Tuberculosis
Q: What are the new requirements for tuberculosis (TB) testing and treatment?
Detailed information on the new requirements are available in the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) document, Tuberculosis Component of the Technical Instructions to Civil Surgeons for the Medical Examination of Aliens in the United States. A link to this document, along with a memo outlining the changes to the TB testing requirements and frequently asked questions, is available in the related links section of this page.

Some of the major changes to the TB requirements include:

Applicants with Class A tuberculosis must complete a full course of TB treatment before receiving medical clearance by USCIS for adjustment of status.
A chest x-ray is required for all applicants with a tuberculin skin test (TST) reaction of less than 5 mm who have signs or symptoms of TB or immunosuppression.
A chest x-ray is required for all applicants with a TST reaction of more than 5 mm, including pregnant women.
Sputum cultures and drug susceptibility testing for positive cultures are required for applicants with chest x-ray findings suggestive of active TB disease.

Q: Who is required to have a TB test?
All applicants two years of age or older are required to have a tuberculin skin test (TST). Children younger than age two are required to have a TST if there is evidence of contact with a person known to have TB or if there is other reason to suspect TB. If evidence of TB infection is found, a chest x-ray is required. Any person with a positive skin test reaction of more than 5mm will also be required to undergo a chest x-ray.

Q: When did the new TB requirements become effective?
The new TB testing and treatment requirements became effective on May 1, 2008. However, CDC allowed a 30 day grace period. Therefore, any medical exam that takes place on or after June 1, 2008 must be performed in accordance with the new TB testing requirements.

Q: Will USCIS accept Form I-693 if the civil surgeon performed a chest x-ray without the TST?
No, the civil surgeon must administer the TST, unless one of the exceptions listed in the Technical Instructions applies. If the civil surgeon performs a chest x-ray without giving the applicant the TST, the reason for omitting the TST must be noted on Form I-693.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vaccinations
Q: What are the new vaccination requirements?
The CDC has revised its vaccination requirements. As of July 1, 2008, the following additional vaccinations are required in order to adjust status to legal permanent resident:

Rotavirus
Hepatitis A
Meningococcal
Human papillomavirus
Zoster
NOTE: Some of these vaccinations are required for certain age groups only. During the examination with the civil surgeon, he or she will review the vaccination history, and may determine that certain vaccinations are not necessary or not appropriate. Specific information on vaccines, including tables on age-appropriate vaccines and ACIP recommendations, are available at CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) website, accesible in the related links section of this page.

Q: When will the new vaccination requirements become effective?
The new vaccination requirements became effective on July 1, 2008. However, CDC approved a 30 day grace period until August 1, 2008. Therefore, for any medical exam conducted on or after August 1, 2008, the new vaccinations, if appropriate, must be administered in order for USCIS to approve the applicant for adjustment of status.

Q: Is there a waiver available for applicants who cannot afford the new vaccinations?
No. The qualifications for a waiver remain unchanged.

Q: Where can I find additional information on the new vaccination requirements?
The Technical Instructions to Civil Surgeons for Vaccination Requirements includes detailed information on the vaccination requirements, including a full list of required vaccinations. A link to the Technical Instructions and any updates to the medical exam requirements can be found in the related links section of this page.

Q: Does USCIS require that all shots in each vaccine series be completed before applying for adjustment of status?
No. The applicant must have received all the required age-appropriate vaccines that could be given at the time of the medical exam. If the applicant has started the vaccination series, but is not able to complete all the required shots because, at the time of the medical exam, the minimum time interval between shots has not passed, the applicant may still apply for adjustment of status. A waiver is available in cases where, due to required time intervals, it was impossible for the applicant to receive all shots in the series before submitting the application for adjustment of status.

For example, the Hepatitis A vaccine requires that applicant receive two doses of vaccine, six months apart. If the applicant receives the first dose in January, he or she does not have to wait until July, when the second dose would be given, to submit the adjustment of status application. However, the applicant must have received at least the first dose of the vaccine, if appropriate, before applying for adjustment of status.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Form I-693
Q: When did the new Form I-693 become effective?
The revised Form I-693, Report of Medical Examination and Vaccination Record (edition date 04/02/08), became effective on May 1, 2008. USCIS allowed for a 30 day grace period in which it would accept the prior version of Form I-693. Therefore any medical exam conducted on or after June 1, 2008 must be recorded on a revised Form I-693.

Q: Why was Form I-693 revised in April 2008?
Form I-693 was revised to include the new requirements that CDC made to its TB Component of the Technical Instructions and was released at the same time as the new Technical Instructions. Other significant changes to the form included a new referral section with requirements that all necessary follow-up treatment and evaluations be completed prior to the applicant or civil surgeon signing and completing the form. Additionally, the prior vaccination supplement was assimilated as part 2, section 5 of the revised form.

Q: Why does USCIS now have an even newer edition (06/05/08) of Form I-693 on the web?
When CDC added new vaccination requirements to its Technical Instructions for Vaccination, effective July 1, 2008, there were concerns that civil surgeons may forget to add in the new vaccinations in the vaccination chart, resulting in incomplete forms. This revised edition includes the newly required vaccinations by name.

Q: If an applicant is required to receive only the vaccinations, and not undergo the entire medical exam, does he/she have to submit the entire Form I-693?
No. Applicants who are not required to have the entire medical examination need to submit only pages one, three and five of the new form. The required sections include Part 1, Information About You, the vaccination record portion of Part 2, and Part 5 (if the vaccinations are administered by a civil surgeon) or Part 6 (if the vaccinations are administered by a local health department). Pages two and four, that would have been left blank, do not need to be submitted.

Q: Does a designated civil surgeon have to sign Part 6 of Form I-693, or can the health department immunization staff sign it?
The signature in Part 6 must be the physician at the health department. It may be an original or stamped signature. The health department nurse or other health care professional may, but is not required to, co-sign the vaccination supplement. Part 6 will only be completed for those applicants who are filing based on refugee status.

Q: Does the civil surgeon have to complete both the Vaccination Table and the Results section to properly complete the vaccination portion of Form I-693?
Yes. USCIS requires the civil surgeon to completely fill out the vaccination table and the Results section. The civil surgeon must note in the vaccination table the complete vaccination history, date(s) of vaccinations given by the civil surgeon, and any waiver requests.

Q. I had my medical exam completed before the new TB or vaccination requirements went into effect, and have not yet submitted it to USCIS, or I have submitted it but it has not yet been reviewed. Am I now required to have a new medical exam that meets the new TB and/or vaccination requirements before I can adjust status?
Generally, no. When reviewing a Form I-693, USCIS will note the date the exam was conducted and refer to the Technical Instructions, medical requirements, and form edition that were in effect at that particular time, remembering that for each revision of the Technical Instructions there was a 30-day grace period. If the civil surgeon conducted the medical exam properly and in keeping with the exam requirements and form edition in effect on that particular date, there is no need to return for a second exam or to have the results recorded on a newer edition of Form I-693, as long as you submit the Form I-693 before its one-year expiration.

Civil Surgeon Questions
Q: Form I-693 now states patients who require a chest X-ray must include the copy of the X-ray report with the I-693 packet. What type of X-ray report is acceptable?
USCIS will only accept a full and formal radiologist’s chest X-ray report, whether a copy or an original, signed by the radiologist and on official hospital or medical office letterhead. USCIS cannot accept any preliminary or incomplete evaluation, whether handwritten or not, that does not describe the full evaluation or findings. In most cases, the civil surgeon will have to wait a day or two before this report has been sent by the reviewing medical office and can therefore not sign off on the Form I-693 until this report has been received.

Q: Both the CDC and USCIS have revised their requirements for medical referrals, as notated on Form I-693. In what instances must the referral section in Part 3 be completed?
Only complete Part 3, Referral to Health Department or Other Doctor / Facility, if the referral was required, such as when a Class A condition is suspected and needs further evaluation. Do not complete Part 3 if the referral was merely recommended by the CDC. Instead notate the (recommended but not required) referral in the Remarks box under that particular disease or disorder. This will help alleviate the possibility of USCIS rejecting the Form I-693 due to an erroneous assumption that a follow-up evaluation was needed before completion of the form.

Q: How can I contact USCIS for more information?
Applicants for adjustment of status may call the USCIS National Customer Service Center at 1-800-375-5283 (TTY 1-800-767-1833). Civil surgeons should contact their civil surgeon coordinator at the USCIS field or district office where they obtained their civil surgeon designation.

Africa: Sub-SaharanAnother Question Regarding Vaccinations
Hey Guys,

I have a question:

We are scheduled on Sunday to see a Civil Surgeon at a local Urgent Care to complete the needed vaccinations, and the I-693. I found someone who will complete our paperwork for $25.00 plus the cost of each vaccination. I cannot really tell how many Samuel will need. But they range from $33.00 and up. I just finished and turned in the application to have Samuel added to my insurance. So, I am thinking since we have to wait several weeks for the Certified Marriage Certificate, can we make an appointment for Samuel to meet with his new primary care physician, get the vaccinations he needs (paid for by insurance) and then go and see the Civil Surgeon? This way I do not have to pay out of pocket for the vaccinations. Next, I know that a Civil Surgeon has to transcribe the vaccinations to the I-693, but is there any law or regulation that says we can only use a Civil Surgeon to complete the vaccinations?

Here is a little something for all of us in here today. You may already have it, because it was such a well circulated email. But I thought it was appropriate considering the topic.

ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVES* * * * SHAKE THEM HATERS OFF! BY REV T.D JAKES

A hater is someone that is jealous and envious and spends all their time trying to make you look small so they can look tall. They are very negative people. Nothing is ever good enough! When you make your mark, you will always attract some haters... That's why you have to be careful who you share your blessings and your dreams with because some folk can't handle seeing you blessed... It's dangerous to be like somebody else... If God wanted you to be like somebody else. He would have given you what He gave them. You don't know what people have gone through to get what they have... The problem I have with haters is that they see my glory, but they don't know my story... If the grass looks greener on the other side of the fence, you can rest assured that the water bill is higher there too. We've all got some haters among us:

Some people don't like it that you can:

* Have a relationship with God
* Light up a room when you walk in
* Start your own business
* Tell a man/woman to get lost (if he/she ain't about the right thing)
* Raise children without both parents being around
* And not ask for a dime from Anyone
* Haters don't want to see you happy
* Haters don't want to see you succeed
* Haters don't want you to get the victory

Most of our haters are people that are supposed to be on our side. How do you handle the haters who you at least expect to have your guard up against?

You can handle your haters by:
1. *Knowing who you are & who your true friends are * (VERY IMPORTANT!!)
2. *Having a purpose to your life *
3. *By remembering what you have is by divine prerogative and not human manipulation.
* Purpose does not mean having a job. You can have a job and still be unfulfilled. A purpose is having a clear sense of what God has called you to be.
Your purpose is not defined by what others think about you. Fulfill your dreams! You only have one life to live..........when its your
time to leave this earth, you want to be able to say,'I've lived my life and fulfilled my dreams, .........I'm ready to go HOME!

When God gives you a favor, you can tell your haters, 'Don't look at me... Look at who is in charge of me...' Pass this to all of your family & friends who you know are not hating on you .

If you don't get it back, maybe you caught somebody out! Don't worry about it, it's not your problem, it's theirs. Just pray for them, that their life can be as fulfilled as yours! Watch out for Haters.................BUT most of all don't become a HATER yourself!

Of course she is jealous. If you are anything like me, I know you talk about your Bassi. I talk about my Sammie, but only what I want them to know. Even then, they all got together and felt it was necessary to send me an article about how "older women" were being scammed by African men. Heifers!!!! And even if she doesnt know about your Bassi, obviously she must be miserable, because she is trying to blow out your light. Cause I know you glowing over there gurl!

Shine on and tell your boss to get some business.

P.S. When I told my boss that Sammie was coming home next month...she decided to plan an audit and sent out an email that no one can take vacation in June. I am at work, so I wont say what I really want to say!!!!!

I'm depressed. I really feel like I just wanna quit. I feel overwhelmed and frustrated and hate thinking about this stupid job all the time.

Today, she's fussing at me because a woman emailed me twice yesterday and she then emailed my boss and said I am unprofessional because I didn't respond to her. I had a payroll close yesterday and was swamped. I think a good boss would say, payroll closed yesterday, I'm sure she will get back to you before the week is out. Why am I expected to respond to every email within a matter of hours? Why doesn't she have my back? sad.gif

Well now, since I do not have anything to do but wait for my Sammie...I have decided to get all up in hur! LOL! Zain, I know you know why your boss does not have your back! Come on gurl. I can spell it out if you wish. But I would rather spend my time encouraging you to close your eyes at your desk and think.....My tall, handsome, sexy Ghanaian man is coming home soon!

You think she's jealous of Bassi? It's a possibility. He is a wonderful man. I must say thinking about that made me smile. Jealous witch!

Hey,

We just had the same conversation in preparation for the AOS interview. My husbands reaction was, "Please sweetie, lets not talk about such things." LOL! Now, keep in mind that I am a licensed mortician so I see familes that literally have to wait until Auntie Tee Tee and Uncle Cecil come in from Alabama to write a big check or start the collection basket. This situation can be very embarassing for the family. So...I made an appointment for the State Farm Representative to come and speak with us. My husband made Joloff rice and iced tea. Of course the agent complimented his cooking and asked thousands of questions about Ghana. This put Samuel in a more relaxed state of mind and he felt involved and took the time to listen to the agent. Z was right...we cannot change our men or their reactions to things. So, I have learned the best thing to do is to move and wiggle my around those reactions. Remember this AOS and integration process stresses them out too.

Peace and Love

A licensed mortician! Do you have any suggestions on how to handle the conversation on creating a will? I already have one in place, just need to revise it. After last night, I don't want to rock the boat. blush.gif

Certainly! You are very smart for having a will and you are already ahead of the game. Contact your attorney and make the revisions as soon as you know what you want to change. Your attorney will guide you through the process. From a morticians perspective, honesty is the best policy. Eventually you will need to discuss very sensitive matters such as repatriation (the shipment of remains back to his homeland). I do not mean to be morbid but Samuel and I have had this convo and it went smoothy, but after the insurance agent left. Again, its just about creating a comfort zone for them. In contrast, as new wife who is married to an African man, LOL.....maybe give your hubby time to digest the insurance policy subject first then move on to the will topic. If you need more info please feel free to ask.

About Banku...when my husband and I make it here's our mixture...

3-4 days prior:

Take one bag of cornmeal (like the size of a bag of all-purpose flour) and mix with water in a large stew pot. consistency should be about like, mush or oatmeal. Mix the two together cover the pot and put in a cool, dark place to ferment for 3-4 days.

When we do it this way, we divide the fermented cornmeal into batches and put each batch into a plastic, grocery bag (about 4-5 cups each bag). This way, we can freeze what we won't immediately use. From one bag of cornmeal, you should get about 4-5 individual batches. Freeze the extras and use only one.

The mixture:
Take Cornmeal and put in blender and mix w/ water until liquid (not too runny)! Pour this into a separate bowl. Then you will need fresh cassava (Yuca/Blanca Cassava). Peel and chop the cassava and put into the blender. Add water and blend until liquid. The ratio of cassava liquid to cornmeal liquid is about 40(cassava):60(cornmeal). Season the mixture with salt to taste.

To actually make, you will need to continually stir and taste the mixture. Adding water as it gets thick. It's really hard to explain this step...The best way to learn is to have someone show/help you. I hope the mixture helps you get started!

Looks like I have a lot to learn. Thanks so much....I am going to print this out and start practicing. I don't want Samuel to be rushed to the hospital from my attempt to cook Ghanaian dishes. LOL!!!
