US Citizenship General DiscussionQuestion about overdue taxes

So I have overdue taxes and it says to bring signed payment agreement form and also show that Im in good standing with IRS

I do have a copy of signed agreement that Im on repayment program when I started it, however IRS says they dont have a letter per say that says you are in good standing. All they have is transcripts that show payments have been made on time and she said I can use copies of my payment stubs to show that Im making payments and that Im in good standing that way.

What do you all think, would that be enough?

Thanks
Marcin

The transcripts and the payment stubs are enough evidence to show that you are current with the IRS. Current does not mean you don't owe anything, so much as you are meeting your obligations with them according to the agreement you signed.

You should be OK. Good luck!

United KingdomWhat's your back-up plan?

Wait...so...he passed his medical?? After that WHOLE thread about the doctors at Knightsbridge "Denying after depression/self harm"?? You seriously need to calm down. Its London, they aren't looking to trip anyone up. They are looking for scammers. If you have a real relationship, and all your paper work is in order...then RELAX!!!!!

A-frigging-men brother!

I assumed this thread was in case they made an error and he did pass his medical.

You're terrible Muriel...

So do you really actually think we're doomed...? Mind you, I do have mild autism so I can have a hard time differencing sarcasm or if you're talking literally.

It seems as though you are dooming yourself by playing out all these scenarios where things would or could go wrong with the medical exam and now with the interview.

It seems you are attempting to sabotage your own relationship, or has doubts about it, and are hoping the US consulate in London will help you get out of it.

JohnR!MaleMonaco2014-05-07 14:51:00
United KingdomWhat's your back-up plan?

I disagree.  Sometimes, they ask things that one normally doesn't think about... for example, "what is your fiancee's favorite food?"  I've been married 6 years and I'm not sure I would match what my wife would say.

They do sometimes ask the same questions differently to catch you.  The point of the intreview is to weed out scammers and fakes,  Otherwise, why have an interview at all, just hand out visas like lollipops.

As I said, you need not rehearse for the truth.  If you don't know the answer to a question, all you need do is say so.  They can ask all the questions they want and if you relationship is kosher you will not have any issues.

The point of the interview is to weed out scammers and fakes.  If you don't fit either category you need not worry.

JohnR!MaleMonaco2014-05-07 14:38:00
United KingdomWhat's your back-up plan?

They ask more than just a few basic questions. I'd advise practicing interview questions with your fiancé. They do try to trip you up.

You don't need to practice for the truth. The consulate has no interest in tripping anyone.  If you've nothing to hide, you've nothing to fear.   Having said that, as a back up plan you always have the option to moving to the beneficiary's country.

United KingdomApple ID and moving to USA

Hi all, technical question. I have an iphone / mac and Apple ID. Now I would like to keep the same Apple ID. Do I just need to change my 'country' settings in iTunes, when I move to the usa and get an iphone over there?

Any other implications/complications anyone has experienced with moving over and apple products / ID?

Thanks in advance!!

In order to change your country you will need to 'zero' your balance in your current account.  Make sure you deplete it before you do the change.  Also you MUST back up your library before you do the change.  Immediately after you change the country to US, you can then restore your library and it will help you keep your music, movies and books.

Good luck!

United KingdomDriving after entering USA

This allows you to drive on your foreign license for 120 days (or roughly 4 months), due to:

- You still being considered a visitor under Colorado law for the first three months you live in Colorado; and

- having 30 days to obtain a Colorado licence from when you are considered to be a Colorado resident.

However, if you want to be cheeky and you happen to get pulled over outside this time frame, I am sure you could talk the officer pulling you over that you have not been living in Colorado for more three months, therefore you are not a resident. But I wouldn't advise anyone to break the law.

in practice you can go well over those 120 days.  In most states, the police will accept a foreign DL and valid passport.  The pressure to get a US DL is to prove residency and for registration and insurance purposes.  In that sense you are not breaking any laws.

You are horribly wrong and could put someone in big trouble. For a start I have never seen any specific mention of EU licenses being different.

Lots of examples of people who have been pulled for having no license. I remember someone on another board who was doing the VWP Express and got involved in a prang had the same issue. He had entered as a visitor but somehow told the Cops he was staying.

You are mixing visitors and residents.  K-1 visas are not considered visitors.

In most states the DMV will recognize your EU DL for as long as you are under process.  He should not have been cited.

I see what you are saying now. I was just stating my K1 husband drove with his UK license until he had something in writing from USCIS granting him more than 90 days in the US, so he could get a license. It was answering the question "what have people done with regard to driving in the USA after arrival on K1." That what he did.

Like Nich-Nick's husband I drove on my UK license in TX until i got my EAD. Then I went and got my TX license. TX says you're supposed to get a TX license after you've been resident for 3 mths but when USCIS considers you a resident and when TX considers you a resident are two different things. Without an EAD I was technically still only a visitor and thats what I was going to say while producing my UK license were I ever stopped and asked to produce a license. I was never pulled over however.

I thought so. Ali got pulled over about three months after he got here and got slapped with a "driving without a license". We thought he had 90 days, apparently it was 60. Womp womp.

Colorado is 90 days, less if you are working.

I think you are confusing visitor and resident.

Precisely.  For residents the DMV tends to be more lenient.

I do not remember any that give new residents that long.

Most, if not all, do.

Don't some states differ on the amount of time you can use your foreign license?

Yes, they do and it is normally 6 months, but it it not enforced.  In actuality you can use your EU DL as long as it is valid, along with a valid passport until you get your GC.  The real incentive for obtaining a US DL is that you will need it to obtain insurance and car registration.

Hi All,

I was wondering what people have done in regard to driving in the USA after arrival on K1. I hold a full (clean) UK license. I have today got an International Driving Permit too (just in case).

Will i need to wait until receiving green card after AoS process before applying for Learners Permit / Driving License?

Will i be able to drive on my UK license in the meantime?

Any advice as always would be appreciated..

Jay

The actual procedure will depend on the state whither you're moving.  DL are issued under state laws.

However, you can quite possibly count on the following:

1 - You can use your UK DL (with your passport) until you can get your permit in your state.

2 - To be on the safe side, wait until you get your greencard before applying for a DL.  In most states, if you apply with your I-94, chances are your DL will expire on the same date as your I-94, which means, 90 days from the date you ener the US.

Good luck!

United KingdomPets from Heathrow to Houston
Another thought...

You may wish to give Delta, American and US Air a ring and see what they have to say. Again, they do not fly non-stop to IAH. Delta connects at JFK or Atlanta, but they do place an embargo on pets during the summer, due to heat factor. American connects at DFW or MIA or O'Hare and US Air may connect at Philly or Charlotte.

Unfortunately if you're not getting anywhere with BA/UA you may have to look at connecting services.

Alternatively, you may also consider putting Leo on the Eurostar, taking him to Paris, or Amsterdam and flying non-stop on AF or KL to IAH, if you can't get him out of GB without using an agent and coughing up a thousand quid...

Once again, thanks for the help and suggestions guys.

Thanks Nich-Nick for your offer, I might have to take you up on that...

Gegel, thanks for that insight, I was expecting things not to be as complicated as some "pet agents" are making it out to be...but what is annoying me at this stage is:

Continental/United's absolute incompetence dealing with our quite simple request to book a ticket for Leo. They keep on passing the buck to the "Petsafe" people, and the "Petsafe" people don't seem to know what they're doing.... :crying: We have now eventually got a "managers" telephone number at the cargo depot at Heathrow so after our visit to the ARC we will see if this person will be able to sort this out.

BA Is just refusing to help and keeps up with their story of using a "pet agent". 4 Pet Agents have quoted us between £700 - £1000.
We don't have that kind of money right now.
The move is already going to cost us a fortune.

United KingdomPets from Heathrow to Houston

I just checked here in the UK on their websites - available flight routes - and couldn't see anything direct to Houston from Heathrow. Maybe yours is cabin sharing flights etc - but I have already read that, that should be avoided if you travelling with your pet.

Yeah, we tend to like to do things the difficult way around here....not the logical way.

Keeto, here are some other things to consider. Although neither LH/AF flies non-stop from LHR to IAH, you can book a connecting flight over CDG or FRA. Where pets are involved, these airlines offer special handling at the connecting airport so your pet is transported with priority from one flight to another.

IMHO you should do what seems better for you, but the reason I never used a pet agent is because when I travel with my pets I want them in the same aircraft with me, if only in the cargo hold. Also if you are a DIY person, there is nothing the pet agent can do you cant do yourself.

You can book space for the pet at the time you book your seat, so you are assured your pet will be on the same flight as you. All you do is pay the pet fee, which varies from airline to airline, but they can tell you what the charges are at the time you book.

On departure, you bring your pet in an approved kennel, and check in normally. An agent will take your pet and put him/her on the plane. A flight attendant would normally come to your seat and confirm your pet has been put on board the aircraft, just so you can relax.

Upon arrival in the US, your pet will be delivered with your luggage, albeit NOT on the conveyor belt. Normally they are brought in and placed with the oversized luggage, such as kayaks, surfboards and golf bags. At that point all you need do is pick up the kennel and walk thorough customs. There is no quarantine or any other charges involved. By luck or design, customs never checked the papers for my pets or anything.

The entire experience is far less stressful than you would presume.

So "pet agents" are the way to go then? B-)

Nope it will be in the late Autumn early Winter.

LOL! Nope Leo is everything but a service dog! :D Some days I think he needs some therapy!......and I really wish we could afford business/first class tickets..... ;) The whole reason I'm asking is because we're trying to save as much money as possible.

In this case, check with a pet agent but also call the airlines and check on their charges, so that Leo can travel in the same aircraft as you, if only in the cargo hold. :(

Hi fellow VJ'ers.

As we all know from all the experiences we have had so far in our journey's planning is EVERYTHING.

So we are all already looking into our options for our lovely mini Schnauzer - Leo - to fly to Houston.

I have researched as much as I could over the weekend and my wife has phoned airlines as much as she could as well.

So far, Continental/United is absolutely useless. Very unprofessional and has no idea what is currently going on with their own "PetSafe" scheme. Several calls later we still have no idea.

British Airways is much more upfront and just came to the point by saying: "Use a pet agent to transport your dog....." Is this the norm? Pay lots of money for someone to do what seems to be something quite basic?

Searching here on VJ was also quite vague as to the actual process of getting a pet on the plane.

We already know what the requirements are for Texas - Health Check Document (not older than 3 days) and a Rabies shot not younger than 30 days. We have our own airline approved kennel for him with all the other requirements as well (water and food containers etc)....as far as I can see we just need to get him on the plane now.....and I can't see where the value is in paying £500+ for this "service".... :hehe:

Anyone else experience would be nice...thanks. :help:

Having traveled with my dog to Europe several times, I am a die hard customer of Air France when it comes to pets traveling in the cargo hold. When I say AF, I mean flights operated by AF and not code-shared with DL. AF's large planes - A330 & 777 - have a cargo hold specially reserved for pet crates, their pet fares are cheaper than DL or UA and their service outstanding. That would be my recommendation if you can't get your dog in the cabin with you.
If your dog is small enough and fits the requirements to travel in the cabin, any airline will do.
In the very common event that you suffer from anxiety - a disability no less - and have a statement from your psychologist or psychiatrist to the effect that you mustn't be separated from your dog for medical reasons, you should, by law, be allowed to take your pet inside the cabin, regardless if size, according to the American with Disabilities Act, so long as your pet does not pose a security risk to other passengers. Your dog need not be a registered service dog for that purpose.
I have also learned that buying a business orr first class tickets will help the airlines be more accommodating of your pet.

United KingdomMy passport is a little worn. How bad is "bad"?

Be safe and get a new one.  You'll need to for international travel once you're stateside anyway.

Hey guys,

After reading the step by step guide for the K1 process (extremely helpful, thank you so much), the only thing I am a little worried about is the state of my passport. I'll be taking my interview in London.

This is what has sparked my attention...

  1. Finally, make sure your passport is in order ? You need to make sure you have at least 8 months until the expiry date on it, preferably more.  If you've damaged it or gotten it wet, or the edges are wrinkled, it will need to be renewed. London is fussy about that.

I have 2 years left on it but as it is 8 years old and it was my only form of ID for many years, the some of the corners of the inside pages are a little curly and all the gold writing on the front has come off. Is this bad enough for me to be denied a visa? There is no water damage, it's just a well loved passport. I've never had any issues with it when travelling. Do I really need to apply for a whole new one? I can attach pictures if necessary...

Thanks in advance!

Hey,

Just wondering what why some of us have opted for England rather then UK or vise versa for their beneficiary's country of origin?

This discrepancy doesn't show up on Igor's list or the time line searches as they don't seem to include England (or do they add it without separating it?)...

I know it's off topic, but I'm just curious (and a little statistic obsessed)... LOL

Considering the games officially start tomorrow, any impact of the expected slowdown will be in effect soon.

My 2-cent worth is that little will get done during the Olympics. Consider that traffic will most likely get worse and getting in and out of Mayfair will be even harder, by car, tube, bus, etc. In addition there is the heightened security in/around all the Mayfair / Belgravia area. Is it not uncommon that Embassy and Consulate personnel be invited for parties, and other events related to the Olympics.

Time to dig out my old passport and call my parents.

Only missing a few so it shouldn't be a problem to find the dates.

That is the best course of action. Get your old passports and enter the information you can find. Add anything that you can remember from memory. There is no problem in entering approximate dates, so long as you add a remark to that effect. If you don't have enough space on the form, attach a separate sheet and provide an explanation, for the approximate dates.

If you marry him at this point, your K-1 is off and you need to apply for a CR/IR process. He will not be able to come to the US with you and stay, before his visa is approved.

It might be easier for you to immigrate to the UK than the other way around.

United KingdomRemoval Companies UK to USA

This is something I'm looking into too. I don't have quite so much but still a couple of boxes worth, so Ive been looking at Royal Mail International and DHL, and also googling some 3rd party companies...does anyone know if I have to pay duty on my stuff or would I get a small stereo and lava lamp through customs in a suit case??

You should be OK with the stuff you are bringing, since you're moving here. You will not be charged duty on your personal stuff. (I brought an entire household and two cars from England when I moved back to the US...)

Let me remind you that electricity in the US is 110-125/60Hz (versus UK 220-230/50Hz) so if your stereo has a clock, even if it is dual voltage, there is a chance your clock will run faster in the US. Make sure it is dual votlage and Hertz-age as well. The lava lamp may be wired for 230 so check them out before you ship them...

Other than that, I would trust the Royal Mail. Send it via slow boat and it should not cost you much although it may take a while to get here.

United KingdomRemoval Companies UK to USA

Hello everybody,

My wife and I received our NOA2 not too long ago and I am slowly but surely preparing for matters with regards to the physical move of my personal belongings. Since I have quite a bit that will need to be moved stateside I was wondering whether anyone can suggest a good and reliable UK based removal company that does removals to the US. I have googled my query and have found quite a few entries and have contacted one company but I am rather looking for people that have already made the move and have either had a positive or maybe a rather negative experience with a company. Any suggestions are welcome and good luck to all of you that are hanging in there in the last stages of this process!

I have used United Van Lines on a move to and from GB and they were excellent. They packed the entire household at the origin and unpacked at the destination, both ways. In addition I also shipped the car in the same container, so everything arrived at the same time and in less than 4 weeks. I would highly recommend them.

United Kingdom2012 Tax return at interview?

Hi guys

Just wondering if they will want to see the US Citizens 2012 tax return at the London embassy? We filed 2011, 2010, & 2009 when we submitted the AOS but 2012 wasnt due while we were at NVC. However the tax deadline will have passed by our interview.

If it makes a difference we did not use any income for AOS, applied on assets only.

You would be safer to assume they will ask for tax transcripts. Unless you have applied for an extension to file taxes for 2012, get a transcript from the IRS in the link below for the last three yeares - 2012, 2011 and 2010 - and have them at the interview, just in case.

Call the embassy at once and report it, so they can cancel the visa in the system.  They can also give you instructions as how to go about getting a new visa.

United KingdomFlying KLM into Atlanta

Has anyone flown KLM from Heathrow into Atlanta? I usually fly Delta (Atlanta is Delta's hub city) because they also fly to Gulfport, Mississippi which is the closest airport to Chelsea.

However I have turned my attention to trying to find a decently priced one-way flight from Heathrow to Gulfport. KLM is operated by Delta on that route, but I was wondering if anyone noticed any differences in service or checking in?

What matters is which carrier is actually operating the flight.   If as you say the flight is sold as KLM but operated by Delta, check-in, aircraft, crew & service will be Delta.

Thank you for the reply. We have decided to use Virgin Atlantic as we can use the "DIY route" since they do not require a pet transport agency. We found direct flights from London to Orlando. I still find the fees to be ludicrous for flying animals. Going to cost us more to fly the pup than to fly my fiance here. =p

Glad to hear you got away from agents and their ridiculous fees on top of what is already an expensive proposition!!!

United KingdomFlying a dog in cargo with British Airways from UK to US

My fiance and I are trying to figure out how we can bring his 30lb English Cocker Spaniel with him when he enters the US. I've found a direct flight from Gatwick to Tampa with British Airways. Trouble is, when you look into flying a pet in the cargo with BA they insist that you use a pet export service. It's going to be expensive to use this service. Is there any way around this? I tried looking at Lufthansa flights but they don't fly direct to Florida.

Suggestion: Consider using KLM or AirFrance to Orlando and book the pet as excess luggage so she/he will travel with you on the same flight.   These airlines have better pet service and your dog will be better treated despite the connection in Amsterdam or Paris.

Anyone know what a "specialist" degree from Russia translates to in the US? Bachellor's or master's? If it's relevant, my SO's degree is in Mathematics and Information Systems. He studied five years.

It all depends on the transcripts of the courses taken. Once you have those you will be able to establish equivalence to a course in the US, if there is a similar course. At worst, you will be able to find out which courses - if any - are missing, and fill the gap to a bachelor or masters degree.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusBuying a Wife from the Ukraine

Wrong is wrong. Or did you just immigrate from The Monaco? Did you fly into The America with a stop over in The France or The England. :bonk:

It is important to note that the term "The Ukraine" was established by Joseph Stalin as he tried to extinguish the Ukrainian people and their language, culture and heritage. Review the history of Ukraine, particularly as it pertains to Stalin's collective farming program and the death of millions of Ukrainians from starvation in the 1930's. If you think it doesn't matter to Ukrainians, think again.

As far as their politics ask yourself why the Ukrainian President has more personal security than any other head of state. This man is a criminal which is why he needs so much security. He knows that there might be a patriot out there willing to sacrifice his life for the survival of Ukraine.

It would be a grammatical impossibility to immigrate from anywhere. In spite of it, I did not immigrate to United States, but I have flown and sailed to THE United States via THE France several times...- ask any French and they will confirm their country calls for an article. Even if out of place in English, the French will appreciate the deference, as would anyone from THE United Kingdom or THE Netherlands.

With all due respect, I did not say it does not matter to the Ukrainians, so much I was pointing out the Ukraine still behaves very much as it did during its Soviet times, and many still believe they were better off as part of the USSR then as an independent country. For them, the Ukraine will do just fine, article and all.

If she says, "What did you get me for our anniversary," I promptly respond, "A lot of nice stuff, but the rubias (my imaginary harem of 6 beautiful blondes) thought that it was for them, and they took it all." I then add to that, "Why don't you call the rojo (imaginary redheaded dude with whom she imaginarily cheats) and ask him to give you something else?"

There is nothing like having a harem of rubias, or a rojo, to pull one's nether regions from the fire, no man.

Edited to add: Actually, she didn't give me anything this year, and she put on her pouty face when she told me. I said, "That's quite all right -- buying for both me and the rojo can be expensive." That made her feel better, si man.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusAnyone else forget their wedding anniversary ?

Three years in a row now and she's sh*tting bricks atm. I blame it on football season. She always gets me something nice along with a card and then waits until the last minute to give it to me and every time like tonight I'm kicking myself in the ####### for not setting an email reminder for it on my google calender.

Man, she IS good...

I have two suggestions: Give in -or- Own it.

1/Give in - Just give in and make notes, create 10 reminders in your calendar, phone, set alarms and all that stuff, so you won't miss the next one.

2/Own it - Come clean and tell her you can't remember these dates in the way she expects and promise her to celebrate your anniversary on a random weekend of your choosing, by taking her somewhere nice, as a surprise, or getting her a special anniversary gift on another date 'just cause'. (and of course, remember to come through!!!!!)

Face it. You're screwed.

Russia, Ukraine and BelarusDid I screw up?

I am planning our next trip and thought I was being brilliant flying Anna into Atlanta and meeting her there to fly together to Montego Bay. But then I just had a sinking feeling....is she allowed to stop at a US airport? We would stay in the terminal. I guess I just assumed that the terminal is international ground like in The Terminal with Tom Hanks. Anybody got a solid answer on that? I've looked all over the internet but can't find an answer.

It depends on the passport she carries. The US no longer allows for TWOV - Transit Without Visa.

If her passport was issued by a country in the VWP list, all she needs is the ESTA, as if she were traveling to the US. If her passport was issued by a non-VWP country she may apply for a common B1/B2 visa, with which she can travel through the United States or a Transit Visa which will allow her to transit on American soil but not enter the country. The drawback about the transit VISA is that she will escorted to a holding area until she is ready to board her next flight. It is really not the most pleasant experience, as far as globetrotting goes...

Good luck!
