United KingdomApproved!
To add on a bit...Nicky said that we first met in person at a U2 concert in Omaha, Nebraska. I guess the interviewer was a fan too because they talked about U2 for several minutes after that haha.

Thanks everyone! All of you on VJ who have given advice and encouragement...I thank you all immensely. We couldn't have done it without you.

United KingdomApproved!
I forgot who keeps the list of the approvals, but you can add me and Nicky.McMillan to the list! Apparently the only question they asked him was how we met. He waited an hour and a half just for that!

Anyways, there is one hitch...I had to give him a letter stating that we still intended to marry when I was in the UK last week. Apparently, they wanted this notarized as well. I don't recall seeing that needing to be done anywhere on here before...is this something new that the embassy is doing? (It's not a big deal, I'm just printing it off again and express mailing it...and I happen to work at a company that has a large legal department with several notaries that will do it for free).

Black pudding was my Mom's favourite breakfast! She always got it from the local "Scottish shop" and whenever her sisters visited, they would all settle in for a good helping of black pud. I never really took to it, but what I miss and would love to find is good finnan haddie! Yum! haven't had that since I left Kingston, Ontario where the same Scottish shop Mom went to sold it. I've had other smoked fish since, but it is just not the same.

Ohhhhhh. I TOTALLY miss a good finnan haddie. sad.gif I've found they have the tinned kippers here. I like to put them in my fish/seafood chowder. The fish and the broth really provides an added boost. good.gif

The place my DF and I were staying at last week gave a big slab of haggis with the breakfast. I tried to eat it...but well it just wasn't setting well with me.

I don't mind black pudding as much, but give me blueberry pancakes any day!

No worries, I'll open one can of Bush's for me and the kids, and I'm sure he'll finish off a can of Heinz on his own!

This is a pic of the can you'll want to purchase:

We've found them at Jewel stores in Chicago. However, I would check first to see if your store carries them.

Oh dear you're in the Highlands...I wonder how thick your accent is. You're doomed xD

Lots of Scots down in the south though, historically or ancestrally or whatever. You might be nagged into the Highland festivals that take place yearly in lots of places around here tongue.gif

As for the Griffin in Charleston, I'm pretty sure I've passed it and know what you're talking about. Is it a pub on Broad street with big wooden tables and wooden bar and everything?...I've actually always thought it looked very nice and like a 'man's man' bar, not stuck up at all. I've actually wanted to go there a few times but I never have anyone to go out with. But yeh if that's the same one it's still there and I reckon it is english though I don't know if they have any of the traditional english pub food or imported beers or anything.

There is a lot more religion down here, you'd better be ready for that. Lots of baptist churches every quarter mile with sometimes obnoxious signs telling you how you're going to burn in hell. But I don't think it's a big obstacle, you can assume most people you bump into are religious but it doesn't like run their lives or anything.

Myrtle Beach does suck but I've heard the suburban areas around it are actually pretty nice. Maybe you should look into those?

and finally...

I cannot begin to tell you how much Cracker Barrel SUCKS and isn't like southern food at all, what's wrong with you all sad.gif My goodness.

Suburban Myrtle Beach might be nice. Don't know anything about it. Just know about the mass of Yankee tourists it attracts that we always made fun of growing up. (Apologies to my northern compatriots.)

Agree completely re: Cracker Barrel. It's not HORRIBLE, but saying it has good Southern food is like saying a Wetherspoon's pub has good fish and chips!!!

If you want good Southern food, just go to the biggest Baptist Church in town on Sundays and follow all the people in their "Sunday bests." You will be led to the best little Southern food establishments known to man. Just thinking of it makes me teary-eyed. Creamed corn, creamed potatoes, fried chicken, green beans (cooked in fatback of course), biscuits and gravy.... waekfjasdlgahsdlfk.... dancin5hr.gif dancin5hr.gif dancin5hr.gif dancin5hr.gif

How about a good fish fry? I know my southern relatives in north Texas do those well...nothing like hot fried catfish!

The humidity in the Summer is pretty icky, it's kinda swampy here. But on the plus side almost everywhere has air conditioning, so as long as you're inside it's ok smile.gif Everything is in bloom at the moment, very pretty, but the pine trees are driving my husbands allergies crazy.

I mostly like Southern Food, and Cracker Barrel is yummy! I don't like Grits though! But biscuits and sausage gravy are good.

South Carolina is kind of a slow pace of life, it's quite nice. Most people are very polite!

I might add that the IO's are Irish, and in my experience they tend to be a bit nicer than the ones you get upon arrival in the US...but like I said that is my experience. It's also nicer getting the passport stuff done before the flight than standing around forever after you get to the US POE.

And god forbid, if you somehow get denied entry into the US, it's better for that to happen in Dublin when you are closer to home than when you get to your US destination.

They are really picky about those letters of intent. I sent an updated one but it wasn't notarized, so I have to resend one that was in order for his visa to be processed. Nicky was approved, just couldn't get the actual visa itself until they got the letter.

He was told by the embassy staff that if it was up to them they wouldn't mind, but it was Homeland Security that was picky about it and they didn't want to chance Nicky getting denied at immigration when he moved.

United KingdomAre you worried????????
Hmm...honestly it all depends on where you live. I live in a relatively low crime northside Chicago neighborhood, but if you go to the south or west side it's a totally different story. This year alone 23 Chicago Public School students have been murdered in gun/gang related crimes on or near school property. There is definitly a problem...guns are only the tip of the iceberg. When it comes down to it the root of the problem is poverty.

However, I grew up in rural Nebraska where nearly everyone has a gun...in fact my grandma used to sleep with one under her pillow! Hunting was part of the culture and I see nothing wrong with gun ownership for sport. There have been murders in the small town I'm from, but growing up there I never felt unsafe unless I stepped onto someone's property who liked to exercise his second amendment right!

However, I don't see the need for anyone to own a semi-automatic or fully automatic weapon.

I'm sorry to hear about your terrible experience William Wallace...it is totally understandable why you would feel pretty nervous about gun crime over here!

I can't answer your questions on co-sponsors, but I'm currently working on the I-864 myself. On the Check List that comes with the form it states

A copy of your individual Federal income tax return, including W-2's for the most recent tax year or a statement and/or evidence describing why you wre not required to file. also include a copy of each and every Form 1099, schedule, and any other evidence of reported income. You may submit this information for the most recent three tax years, pay stub(s) from the most recent six months, and/or a letter from your employer if you believe any of these items will help qualify you.

It sounds to me they only want the W-2's for this year. As for the most recent take years, whatever year it was he didn't file supply a statement stating as to why he did not file taxes.

I don't think they are going to be terribly worried about the taxes from a few years ago...I think they are more concerned about the recent past, present and future.

United Kingdomhi all... new here and in London
It's going to be difficult these days finding anything less than $800.

However, in my experience Air India has usually had the cheapest fares UK - US. However they only fly certain days of the week (at least into Chicago).

Typically, I fly in/out of Dublin and then take a Ryan Air flight over to my UK destination. There are some advantages to this:

1) If you play your cards right you can get a 1p flight to your UK destination
2) When flying to the US you go through the US Customs at Dublin Airport instead of the US destination. You do this before the flight...so you don't have long lines to wait in after a long flight. Also I find the personnel there to be nicer.
3) Aer Lingus tends to be fairly cheap

As of late American Airlines and British Airways have had some good deals...or at least better than their competition. I was just over in the UK a few weeks ago and my BA flight was just over $600. Nicky's UK relatives all got their flights for £300 on American from Manchester to Chicago.

I hope this helps!

United KingdomUS Immigration at Heathrow
I was in the UK at the end of April and no US immigration then.

I heard somewhere that there were plans to do a US immigration checkpoint at Heathrow but the plans basically got scrapped after 9/11 and the shoe bomber incident killed the idea completely. I don't know how customs works but I would imagine it would be more conducive to actually have immigration at Heathrow and catch terrorists before they actually board a plane. Then again there is probably a lot of bureaucratic red tape that makes this nearly impossible.

One of my friends at work was just in London for a holiday visiting a friend of hers (a USC) who is living in the UK with her USC husband while he is in grad school at London School of Economics. My boss was asking my friend how she liked British TV and she said that she actually watched US tv over there because her USC friend had a Slingbox. From what I understand, basically you have a box attached to a tv (in her case she had it attached to her parent's tv in North Carolina) and somehow it streamed the tv channels from their tv to the computer in London.

I'm not a techie, and I've looked it up online to try to understand it better. But what I'm wondering is if any of the Brits who have moved over here use a slingbox, and are they pleased with the product?

We're in a lucky situation in that we're having the reception in a not ridiculously expensive city
Plus we kinda feel that a lot of the people coming (about 50%) will have spent about 1500$ getting there (damn august prices)
So we're buying everyone their drinks

We did debate about it for a long time, and most of my irish friends think we're crazy but ... we're looking forward to treating people.

We're having it in an awesome microbrewery with the best red ale. Mmmm yummy

Ooo...a microbrewery! That is a brilliant plan!

Well, at least Nicky's family doesn't drink much. His mum will have a glass of wine or champagne and his uncle is diabetic and his step dad and aunt don't drink really so I don't worry there.

Actually, my aunt and uncle coming up from Florida are confirmed alcoholics...let's just say that when they have a glass of orange juice for breakfast it is really more of a screwdriver...we couldn't afford to keep them toasted!

QUOTE (Wacken @ Jun 2 2008, 01:30 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
I am not sure why it would be completely tacky to ask for people to pay for more than the toast. If most people are going to have to drive anyway, then I don't see why it would be a problem.

Irish pub is a cool idea, btw. My husband and I are thinking about doing something for our 5th anniversary that my family could attend since they couldn't afford to come to our wedding in Germany. That might be something to think about.

I looked into doing the traditional banquet type thing (which I guess is the norm here...) but not only was it expensive, but it just really wasn't true to us. I have to say when I went for cake testings that one lady in particular when we told her where our wedding reception was turned her nose up at it! I decided then I wouldn't go with them. The nicest people (who thought it was cool to have the reception in a pub) make Oprah's cakes and have been on the Food Network cake challenges...and here I thought they would be hoity toity but they were the most down to earth of all!
ginger1981FemaleUnited Kingdom2008-06-03 09:22:00
United KingdomWould it be tacky...
It's pretty informal...it's in an Irish pub. Reasoning it out, most people are driving in so I doubt many people would have more than a drink or two even if there was an open bar.

Since the wedding is in the evening we think that people would appreciate having free food more than free drinks.
ginger1981FemaleUnited Kingdom2008-06-02 12:55:00
United KingdomWould it be tacky...
Basically, in the US the weddings I have attended have had an open bar for at least part of the reception. Due to the copious amounts of alcohol my friends and family can consume (and the fact that we aren't particulary rich) we decided against an open bar and instead paying for the first round of drinks.

However, a lot more guests are planning to attend than we anticipated. Would it be tacky to have a cash bar the entire time (however, we are still going to cover the cost of pop for those who wish not to booze it up)? We are going to do a champagne toast still...but at the same time I don't want to come across as cheap/chintzy. I am an executive assistant and the guys who I work for are high rollers in the company...I know I shouldn't worry about being judged (and the people I directly work for won't care) but you do have to put forth a certain image too if you want to advance.

So anyways...for those of you who did the wedding reception, what did you do for the drink situation?
